While I was in Japan this March 2024, I had the privilege of seeing the theaterical re-release of Aikatsu! 10th Story ~Mirai e no Starway~ for Ichigo's birthday at Wald 9 in Shinjuku on 3/10/2024.
Wald 9 had a big, signed Ichigo standee out front and just before taking my photo, someone else was standing in front of it taking a photo with their original Aikatsu IC card!
Even though there was only one showing a day, the theater was almost full and I was lucky to get in! We all got these birthday crowns as a bonus, and a lot of people were wearing them too! (I tried but it kept getting tangled in my hair haha...)
So, about the movie, it was cute! The main story had to do with Ichigo's class preparing for graduation with a glimpse into the future of what everyone is doing at 22. (Who is studying abroad, who is going on a big solo tour, who is now an alcoholic...) There were a few new songs/performances too!
It's such a trip to see the old Aikatsu system, the old cards and everything, featured in a movie on the big screen in 2024. The original arcade game has been dead for almost a decade....
But, speaking of Aikatsu games, as I mentioned in an earlier post because I just couldn't wait, everyone attending this showing received a mysterious card with a code on the back that we do not know the meaning of yet.
Here is what the front of the card looks like:
I risk dating this post by saying this, but I really think the code is a sign of a possible Aikatsu app based on the original arcade game in the works! The code is too long to be something you would enter into an arcade game I think, and I just don't know what else it could be used for. It just reminds me of the old SIF bonus codes we used to get for seeing the Love Live movies in theaters. But yeah, either way, something is definitely brewing on the Aikatsu front.

My (mock) exams are finally over, so I guess it's about time I finally watch this

I was about to say this too lmao
It's funny how their tour includes domes and stadiums (which could hold like, at least 40000 people), but also a livehouse with a capacity of 750 people (Aichi Bottom Line, which they're referencing with TOPLINE), and a hall with a capacity of 3000 people (Tokyo Dome City Hall/TDC Hall, aka what they're referencing with Tokyo Dream Center Hall). What inconsistent capacities for the tour.
(I'm so down the underground idol rabbit hole that I can recognize these venues from these parodies. Help me)
Graduation season. aka the nightmare of any idol fan

The fact that they could get the original CGI back for this really makes you question what stopped them from doing this for Parade
They're trying their best to showcase character growth, but the amount of inconsistencies really shows that it's been almost a decade since the writers've really touched on these characters

Mizuki (and Sakura) are at their gradcon even tho they aren't even graduating. Also I don't think Mizuki has ever had high school education
Man, how I wish the mastering on their version of Signalize got as much money as the performance
Like, half of the choreography for Travel Ribbon is just them running around the stage
THEY REANIMATED SO MANY OLD SCENES
It's over... that's it for Aikatsu I guess. This movie really shows what they could've done but never did. This feels like it's right from 2015 in a good way. Also this would've destroyed me if I hadn't witnessed Aikatsu destroying themselves for years.

Dust Watched: Aikatsu! 10th Story: Mirai e no Starway (1) (2)
Genres: Idols // 1.5 Movie (3 Parts) // S01 (x) | S02 (x) | S03 (x) | S04 (x) | S05 (x) | M01 (x)
The release of this "movie" is quite a bit confusing so: it works more like a 3 part OVA. The 1st part was released alongside the "Aikatsu Planet" movie while the other 2 were released together. I'm not sure if this is only for the BD but all of these have an OP/ED and an episode title as well.
✧ story ✧
The 1st Part of "Mirai e no Starway" starts off with Ichigo and Akari doing their Unit debut concert for "Cosmos" which neatly connects it to the finale of the original Aikatsu season. Afterwards the main 3 plus the Pururin girls, Yurika, and Kaede start to discuss their graduation during the afterparty. The rest of the episode is spent on focusing on what the main 3 want to do after school and we finish off with the gang deciding to hold a Graduation Concert.
Part 2 does a timeskip to the future where get a gilmpse into the young adult life of the characters and how their future pursuits are faring with a surprise appearance from Yurika and Kaede.
Part 3 then goes back in time and we get to see the Graduation Concert with a heartfelt speech from Soleil and the ending showing a new beginning for our now grown up characters.

It was an obvious choice to put almost all the focus on the main 3. This movie feels kind of like a goodbye to the fans of the original series and they'll obviously be more attached to them. Aikatsu 1 already has an insanely huge cast so I didn't expect *everyone* to show up but the amount of characters that did was a bit disappointing. My favourite from this movie was Part 2, where we see them as adults but only Kaede and Yurika (married???) make an appearance. I really wanted to see Otome and Sakura too at the very least.

For a movie, and for what it's supposed to represent, it's a bit low quality. There's nothing outrageously bad about it, it just felt like it could've used a bit more time to cook in the oven. The CGI looked good though.

I believe there was only one new OST which is also the OP and the title of the movie. It's... fine? Not really my style but does make me a bit sentimental.

Honestly, I kind of feel a bit sad for the missed opportunities that could've been in this movie but for what it is, it's fine. And I KNOW that if I've grown up with Aikatsu as I did with Precure, Akari's speech at the end would've made me cry.

All-new Aikatsu! Anime Film to be Screened with Aikatsu Planet! Feature Film
It is announced today that Aikatsu! 10th STORY ~Mirai heno STARWAY~ (Starway to The Future), an all-new anime film to celebrate the Aikatsu! franchise's 10th anniversary, will be screened with the forthcoming feature film edition of Aikatsu Planet!. All of the main staff of the original series, including director Ryuichi Kimura, script writer Yoichi Kato, and character designer Hiroko Yaguchi, will return for the film project.
A teaser visual and a teaser trailer that were revealed today feature Ichigo Hoshimiya and Akari Ozora, the two protagonists in the first Aikatsu! TV anime series, wearing their costumes of Cosmos, the unit formed by them in the final 178th episode.

It is also officially announced that the double feature films are set to be released in Japan on July 15, 2022. And from tomorrow, April 15, the film's advance ticket that can be used as a DATA CARDDASS Aikatsu Planet! card will go on sale at the theaters.
