The movie pokes fun at all manner of scientific shibboleths, but it reminds me that much of what I learned in school has been paved over with new information. In fact, I can recall one professor proclaiming that the purpose of college was teaching students how to learn on their own — learning how to learn, in other words. Advances in plant pathology A remarkable example is in the field of plant pathology. I have a text from my father’s turfgrass disease class back in the 1960s: Diseases of Turfgrass by Professor Couch at Penn State (upon which a very young Bobby Mann scribbled here and there with a ballpoint pen — naughty boy). The book describes a disease known as Ophiobolus patch, causing depressed, circular patches of blighted turfgrass. This book published in 1962. As late as 1982, Ophiobolus patch was still being taught, at least at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, where between eating too much pizza and drinking too much beer, I occasionally showed up to class. Now ask yourself, have you ever heard of Ophiobolus patch? If you answered probably not, why might that be? Did the disease simply vanish? We should be so lucky, right? No, what happened is that there was a marked increase in the knowledge of soilborne plant pathogens during the 1980s that resulted in the discovery of new fungi not previously known. Ophiobolus was renamed Gaeumannomyces, and the disease itself was renamed take-all patch. (Thank goodness for something simple, eh?) As a result of this research, we now have a series of diseases of turfgrass roots — Bermudagrass decline, necrotic ring spot, spring dead spot and summer patch — that more accurately describe root-infecting diseases of turfgrass. I escaped through things that either made me feel like I wasn't falling apart or numbed my mind. CCC made me feel great. I left everything behind those huge wooden doors. I was expected to be excellent and to give everything I got. It was for a great purpose. It held me up. At home, since I couldn't afford videogames or weed, Youtube was my novacane. Just brainwashed myself. I didn't want to think. I dug myself pretty deep academically and healthwise. My life was falling apart. Then, summer appeared. Summer was a time where I could just take a moment to catch my breath. No one expected anything from me. That felt freeing. At the end of it, my confidence in my abilities was at an all time low, but I thought I had beaten my depression. Yeah, it was depression. I had no idea what was happening to me until the summer after when my councilor talked to me about it. The first semester was good. I was keeping my grades fairly well. Everything was going well in the CCC. I made great friends. I got closer to you. I thought these were all signs that I was making strides. Until the incident, I thought my depression was over. Then, after that thing, I realized just how fragile I was. All the things that have happened so far were just crutches. Summer was a crutch. CCC was a crutch. My accomplishments all were crutches. One little slip, and I was back on square one. It felt really unforgiving. I spent two weeks in my bed. Basic duties felt extremely difficult to even try to do. From that point on, it felt like I was going to fall off the boat again. It was a reminder that I still haven't grown. This happened a second time so I knew what to expect. My academics took less of a hit. Although, what was the most difficult is that one of my major crutches was gone, and it was all my fault. CCC was my chance to breathe. When I let everyone down, it was never the same again. Although you and I only got closer, you were very special to me at that time. Photo: Spraye Jim Beveridge, owner of Yards Done Right in Westlake, Ohio, started using Spraye software to schedule his routes as a beta tester. A fellow lawn care operator (LCO) developed the software. Beveridge runs a two-person crew with his wife, Judy. Yards Done Right is a primarily residential company that does lawn fertilization, weed control, organic topdressing and tree and shrub services. Beveridge shares with LM how he uses Spraye, and the advantages route density offers his business. “For a small- to medium-sized business, Spraye has an amazing array of features it offers at an affordable price,” he says. The base subscription costs $90 a month. Route density is a critical part of Beveridge’s operation because it equates to saving time and fuel. “It means a lot to us because I can fly through a dense route versus driving 20 minutes between houses. So, route density basically is everything to us,” he says. “That’s what we try to aim for when we do marketing.” Beveridge says most LCOs’ spray rigs can hold only so much liquid, and using Spraye helps him maximize the amount of square feet he treats in a day without going over that threshold. “When I pick the route out, (Spraye) automatically shows me how many square feet I picked for that day,” he says. “And if I have a few too many (square feet), I can put a couple (jobs) back in the cart and not do those till another day.” Maximizing by city Jim Beveridge Beveridge lives in one of greater Cleveland’s western suburbs. He organizes his routes by suburb to maximize the time spent in one area. “We can pick a group in Avon that has 23 houses that are basically a mile apart, but it’s a 20-minute drive to get out to the houses, but once you’re out there, you go bing, bang, boom and you’re done.” Beveridge says he also likes that Spraye emails customers twice: once when he schedules the visit — about a week out — and then again 24 hours in advance so the client can clear the yard. Adding and skipping routes Spraye offers several options if a client needs to reschedule a service. “If you pull up and Mrs. Smith said, ‘I’m having a party in 20 minutes with 40 kids coming over, you can’t do my lawn today’ … you could skip it, you could move it to a different day automatically or you can just put it back in the unassigned services queue,” Beveridge says. “And then the software will then recalibrate and figure out the next day that it’s in the vicinity and would make sense route-wise.” Adding clients is easy, he says. Once he adds a client with a specific spray program — six applications or so — the client goes into the Spraye system as an unassigned service organized by city. “We tag all the cities where all our customers are, so we can say our next day is going to be in Rocky River (for example),” Beveridge says. “We look up all the customers in Rocky River we’re going to do and, ‘Oh, there’s Mrs. Smith. Thomas— disciple of Jesus Christ, walked and talked with Jesus daily for three years. Jesus told of His death and resurrection. Thomas had heard. But the unthinkable happened. They crucified Jesus, buried him in a tomb, sealing it closed. Everything was over. Until Thomas’ closest friends came saying impossibilities, “We have seen the Lord” he doubted Jesus’ resurrection words.

Immediately after Jesus’ death, “The earth shook, rocks split apart, and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people.” Matthew 27:51-53NLT

Even with people long dead raised, circulating Jerusalem, the scriptures tell us of everyone’s unbelief in Jesus’ resurrection.  Matthew 28:15NLT “...guards accepted the bribe and said what they were told to say. Their story spread widely among the Jews, and they still tell it today.”

Our generations are filled with unbelief as well. In 1994, the great spiritual awakening in Toronto Canada. Again, in 1995 the revival in Pensacola FL led to thousands being saved and multiplied thousands more Christians being revived. Religious, supposedly Pentecostal, leaders raised pointing fingers squelching both Toronto and Brownsville revivals. (I was privileged to be at both places, see God move and be changed by being there.)

Third world nations— average people are raising the dead, casting out demons, opening blind eyes and deaf ears. In the USA and Canada? Why not here? Because of our unbelief.

God gave me this prophecy during quiet times with Him::: My children, My children, I hear your prayers and petitions. A great battle takes place before you, behind you, beside you on either side, but you are sheltered in My refuge. REMAIN FOCUSED on Me, on My Word, on My promises. SPEAK them forth for they are coming to the time of fulfillment. Yet you will see great needs and cry out. CARRY My sword before you. STAY within your armor and SPEAK to the needs in My name with My Word! I am going to show out for all to see. Yes you will be awed. I will be GLORIFIED. Those who have thought they KNOW Me will close their mouths. When they open them again they will come in humble praise to really see and KNOW Who I AM is! Yes, today is the day of salvation. My key players of My new move are coming into place. My kingdom will come and My will is being done! No one can stop this move! REMAIN FOCUSED on Me and My Word. REJOICE in Me and not in the events but in the truth that you know Me, My Word, and your name is written down in Lamb’s Book of Life. DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED REMAIN FOCUSED on Me and My Word, for I AM IS LORD OVER ALL!

Something new will be done in and through God’s people. He’s using bad circumstances planned by satan to bring about His will— AWAKE His sleeping church. Only prayer, fasting, and PRAISE will keep us safe and close to Holy Spirit.

Are you among the people searching God’s Word and Holy Spirit before moving, in prayer, in speech, in praising Him? Will you be caught standing on the sidelines shouting— ‘this can’t be of God, He doesn’t do things that way?’ Can you echo the epileptic’s father, “I believe, help my unbelief?” Mark 9:24ESV. Or will you be like Thomas, “I won’t believe it unless…?” Unbelief is a choice none can’t afford today. It’s your choice. You choose.

PRAYER: Abba Father, draw us out into boldly proclaiming, COME Kingdom of God. Be done will of God, in all of this chaos, in Jesus Christ’s name I pray.

Okay, so story time.

About 7 months ago I was in a major car accident.  I went head-long into a concrete barrier on the expressway.  Car was totaled, but I was surprisingly unscathed.  I never lost consciousness, even when my car skidded on its side for a few seconds before dropping back down.  I walked away with some contusions in my legs, bruising on my chest, and a hairline fracture in my wrist.  That was it.  (I swear by Pontiacs, I had that car for 10 years and she saved my fucking life, I shit you not.)  And while I’m still insanely grateful that I fucking walked away from that in the first place, I still wasn’t able to get back to work immediately.

I worked at a restaurant in Beverly Hills, California, where I was the catering manager (after working my way up from a server in less than 2 years) and I loved that fucking job and the people I worked with.  But I lived an hour from my job, and I couldn’t afford another car, especially after not working for 2 weeks (I did some work from home, but really, I couldn’t do much on the computer if I wanted my wrist to heal, and I ended up just working through the pain longer than I should have).  Taking the bus took 2 and a half hours to and from work.  I had huge amounts of medical debt.  I had debt simply from the 2 weeks I didn’t work, because I lived by myself, in LA, and barely managed to stay above the poverty line in the first place.

I couldn’t keep my apartment.

With the crushing debt, and no immediate money, or means to even get to work really, I was in a bad place.  My sister offered to help pay for my move if I came to live with her in Pensacola, Florida (that’s about 3k miles away, literally across the country, and with no job prospects for me).  But it meant I had a roof over my head.

So I sold as much of my shit as I could, shipped out some that I could (which my sister covered and I’m still paying off) and then drove with her across the country from west coast to east coast.  I had to take a job serving at a casual restaurant just to pay bills (after almost a month of trying to find something more suitable to my skills and experience and getting nothing), feeling like I completely negated the 10 years of service industry experience I’d accumulated, from server to bartender to shift lead to administrative to catering manager.

I felt like utter shit.

And my creativity suffered.  If you look back at my fanfiction profiles, you’ll see the infrequency with which I posted, and that’s not even counting original work.  Safe to say, I’ve had an absolute drought for the last 7 months when it comes to writing, and writing has always been my passion - since I was 4 years old and misspelling unicorn adventure stories.

I’m finally in a place where I can start paying off some of my debt, but I’m still living with my sister, and still without true independence, and still with crippling debt, but I’m making do, getting to a better place.  And I know it’s going to be a while before I can be on my own again, but I’m trying to make do.

I’ve had to leave behind everyone I knew and meet an entirely new set of people (few of which I could seriously and genuinely connect with because hey, this is The South and there are far less liberal mindsets than I’m used to and fuuuuuck if I’m not just trying to stay out of fights with some of these ignorant folk), but there are also some good people here, just trying to eke out a living like me.

And it’s been really shitty and really lackluster and really, really oppressive when it comes to creativity.  So to get a message like this, simple as it is, is just...god, so fucking needed.  And I’m sorry that it took me a week, or two, I don’t know, between working and depression and self-medicating with alcohol I have no concept of time, I swear.

But just.  Thank you.  Thank you more than I can ever express.  I don’t deserve it.  And shut up, I really don’t, I con’t care what you say.  But it’s a nice thought.  And it’s helped.

I’m sorry for the pity story, but it feels better to have said all this at least.

So I guess, not so ‘quick reminder’, huh?  Ahaha.  AHAHAH.
