Being a Behavior technician requires a certain amount of dedication to the job — the rigorous type, bordeline rigid. That’s what is expected to be at peak efficiency regarding analysis protocols and diagnostics for host service and calibration.
For that, Vivian thinks she might be the worst tech in her department.

There were some days, like this one, during which Vivian and her team were called back in the night; a group of guests went all trigger happy and their mess had to be cleaned up somewhere between the Abernathy Ranch and Las Mudas. And since the narratives and hosts had to be back in rotation asap, the techs’ nighttime was reduced without thinking twice.
Maybe it didn’t look like it, but this job was really taxing sometimes.
That being said, shortly after 6AM, Vivian went back to her room for a few extra and well deserved minutes of sleep before resuming her diagnostics routine. An hour and a big mug of coffee with cereals later, Vivian was back in the elevator which took her down to the Behavior department level.
In the soft lighted glass room, a host was sitting on a wheeled stool. The light brightened when Vivian entered.
"Sorry to have kept you waiting," she said on a hushed voice as if she wanted no-one but the offline host to hear her while letting the glass panel shut down slowly behind her. "I had a rough night. Looks like you did too…"
Ironically, he hadn’t been part of this night’s massacre. No, all those involved were already back in rotation for quite some time. Her first subject of the day, however, had only been victim of his own storyline, needing only a quick check-up and Vivian’s all clear before being back on his loop.
She sat on the stool in front of the host, doing her best to ignore his nudity, and unfolded her tablet on her knees; she had to navigate through several indexes before connecting to his signal for a couple update history checkups.
"Bring yourself back online, please," she ordered, without raising her voice.
The command only seemed to take him out of his thoughts.
"Can you hear me?"
"I hear you alright."
"Off character, for now, please."
Vivian loved to talk to them in character… but, for her diagnostics, she had to ask them to reduce their emotional affect — which was more a guarantee of efficiency than an actual need, though.
"There’s been modifications in your attributes last month," she stated as she was discovering the changes. "Several characteristics got… Who the fuck did that?!"
Vivian had an answer to that already, as she was going through the log; someone from Narrative — that she would brand as asshole — had been pretty heavy handed on self-preservation and aggression, and on top of that they also nerfed curiosity, patience and courage!
There was pitiful justifications from the tech about an adjustment request from their sector after some of the host's alleged wanderings, blamed on his curiosity. But all this was more about making him keener to answer provocation while still being enough of a challenge for his opponents — hosts and guests alike. Vivian didn’t like what kind of freedom Narrative techs were taking with the hosts’ attributes, carefully calibrated by her co-workers and others before them; it wasn’t as simple as changing percentages on the fly in any way they saw fit!
It was a delicate and very important step for any host's cognition, for them to even function at all, as much as for the continuity of their fucking narratives!
Vivian took a deep breath and the time to check the quality of the host’s interactions since the modifications but the results only ended up fuelling her rage. So, she commanded:
"Archive this configuration and open the previous one. Confirmed?"
"Yes."
Vivian smiled, satisfied. On her tablet, the attribute matrix seemed now way more familiar than the last.
"We’ll leave 1.5% more in self-preservation… since they thought it best to give you a few more to endure their bullshit," she grumbled. "And then… 0.5 in aggression for them not to come back to lay it on thick! 6.5 will be more than enough. No need to go all the way up to 10!"
Vivian confirmed her modifications before looking back at the host.
"What d'you think?" she asked, without really expecting any answer from him. “No imbalance or discomfort?”
Modifications could sometimes cause hiccups in the hosts’ cognitions, close to an uneasy feeling. There were other ways to know but Vivian preferred to talk rather than relying only on the screen readings.
"No, I’m fine."
And from what Vivian could read now, he wasn’t lying. Although, browsing his history, she noticed a worrying peak of stress at the time of his "death". It would seem like a normal thing from anyone's standpoint but from which of a host and their technician's, however…
"Your last interaction recorded a peculiar rise in your stress level. What caused this?"
"A… thought."
His mumblings were recognised as improvisations by the tablet. Despite her surprise, Vivian said nothing of it.
"What thought?" she encouraged him instead.
"My family. I’m supposed to be responsible for… my wife, and my daughter."
Vivian noticed the normal occurrences of his cognition in the scrolling of his code.
"But… I can’t help it, I’m out of place, there."
He was getting out of beaten path a little with this comment.
"How are your relations with them?"
"Acceptable."
He kept a few seconds of silence before adding:
"My daughter, I think something’s wrong with her."
"Between you and her?" she asked, for clarity’s sake.
"No…"
"Analysis: what prompted this observation?"
He looked hesitant. On the tablet, still no conflict.
"Her interactions are limited," he then said.
Vivian hesitated too; should she report this observation? Perhaps it was relevant for a potential issue somewhere else…
"It must be my fault."
The tablet, however, reported a new improvisation in that answer.
"Your fault?! Why?"
"I… I should enjoy being home."
According to the datas scrolling up, that was a scripted answer from his guilt library but despite that, what took Vivian aback was the tears running down his cheeks. On the screen — distress, confusion. That wasn't the affect class linked to it. But she didn’t suppress his emotional response…
Instead, she glanced carefully through the glass panels around them; her closest colleagues were two cubicles away, doing the same thing as her. Well, maybe not exactly; once positive that no-one would catch her, Vivian leaned forward a little to put her hand on her subject’s cheek, wiping the tears off with a gentle brush of her thumb.
She could have calmed him down with a simple word, or even with a tap on the right button on her tablet but… what would be the point? Vivian didn’t want to, not with him. And to be honest, as much as she was sincerely touched by the faithfulness of his emotion, it was also convenient for her that he would bring such a topic up.
"Children have a short memory but a quick mind…"
Victor Hugo said that first. And Vivian was quoting him today with something else than Philosophy in mind; she had just use a voice command — her voice command. A simple little script she sneaked into the host’ complex code architecture. More or less mixed with the rest of it, encrypted and virtually unnoticeable without knowing what to look for, it gave the recipient host the ability to keep in their memory, in a hidden and compressed partition, all the events happening between the activation and deactivation of said command. Conversations, feelings, impressions… Everything was there. And everything would remain, even after each reset.
The host couldn’t access it at will without hearing the command, and for what Vivian had noticed so far, it didn’t interfere with his narrative, alter his attitude, cause any glitch nor any pain.
According to her analysis, it was only perceived as a distant memory, one of those leaving an undescribable feeling or a sense of déjà-vu…
Despite the severity of her infraction, Vivian was quite proud of her small "innovation". And she had chosen this one, host ID# MG73368928764, to receive her creation among all the percentage of the park’s population her team had in charge. She had chosen him because of his responsiveness in analysis, because he hadn’t been in any big narrative for at least ten years, because she had already noticed a few oddities in his code, because there was something soft in his eyes, a little extra something…
And quite frankly? Because he was the one who inspired her to create this command, based on an idea that has been on her mind. Because she wrote it for him.
Ever since she arrived in the Behavior department, Vivian had done quite a lot of analysis, calibrations, and had many occasions to talk with plenty of hosts, in character mode or not. And the guys from the Narrative department had done such a good job in writing all these characters, their lexical bases, just like her colleagues from Behavior, in encoding and calibrating all that work into each host put in their care!
Or at least, that’s how Vivian was seeing things back then.
But this particular host caught her eye more than any other; she had quickly noticed how much he was calling upon his improvisation engine compared to others and the feeling of having an actual conversation with a well aware person was sometimes so baffling that, against all common sense, Vivian furthered it. Not to mention the frustration she felt that he could never really recall anything else than what his logs allowed him to, after each diagnostic. But since the installation of her script, the inference frequency in his dialog chains increased. And he was calling upon it with even more fluency.
To the point that their sessions became a real pleasure for Vivian!
It was selfish, she realised that… but she wanted him to keep something from it so badly, something from her, just like she could think back on their conversations with emotion. Those past ones were lost for him but, now, he could remember all those that followed the installation of her script.
Vivian smiled when he focused on her.
"Hello, Lawrence."
He looked hesitant for a second, like a man still not fully awake yet. No alert or conflict from his inference engine on her tablet.
"Hey…"
At his answer, Vivian smiled to him again, and so did Lawrence, even if he kept something a bit shy, uncertain, numbed. In that intermediate state, it wasn’t like coming back to the warmth, the liveliness and the responsiveness of the character mode but it wouldn’t be as cold as the analysis mode could be. Even though he was reverting to his usual demeanor.
Vivian didn’t program that; this semblance of a balance had set itself around the integration of the script in the depths of the core-code. But she liked the result.
"How are you, today?"
His drawl was back when he answered:
"Well enough, I’d say. Like after a real good sleep…"
Vivian grinned, amused.
"Perfect."
"And you, how are you?"
The spontaneity of Lawrence’s question took her by surprise.
"Well… um, I’m glad I can talk with you a bit," she finally answered. "Do you remember our last encounter?"
"21 days and 11 hours ago."
This time, the answer was delivered almost without accent; the question had triggered an analysis type of answer.
"And do you remember what our talks were about?"
He would have to query in his archived and encrypted memories to be able to answer this question. If he had it "right", then it would mean that everything was in order.
"Yeah, I told you about my folks, my… my drives. And that project you worked on for some time. It was a secret."
"It still is, Lawrence," she reminded him softly.
"I can keep a secret."
That wasn’t something he needed to convince her of! And she was less wary about him than about any other technician snooping in his code like the guys from Narrative did between two of her maintenance sessions. She gritted her teeth, frustrated and annoyed, by the limits of her authority on the modifications decided in high places, and on whom…
It was her fault, really; she shouldn’t have grew attached to a host like she did to Lawrence, but now things were the way they were, and it wasn’t possible for her to purge her memories and rewrite her affections as easily as a few lines of code. She was only human, after all!
Vivian brushed her boiling emotions off with a brief sigh before fully focusing back on Lawrence, asking him:
"Did this script cause you any issue since our last encounter?"
He still looked slightly numbed as he answered:
"I… I don’t understand…"
"No interference with your core-code?" she rephrased.
"No. None."
Not to brag, but she suspected that much. The only persisting worries she had were the saturation of his memory, provided that could actually be possible. Normally, the hosts’ memory was wiped between each rotation; then, there was no telling what could really happen if a unit gathered too much data. Vivian might as well be ending up editing her script to overwrite the oldest logs… She hesitated, biting her lower lip then tried a new question:
"No saturation?"
"No."
She gazed at him for a long minute before looking down on her tablet and stating, more to herself than to him:
"Maybe… maybe you’d rather be rid of all those… memories."
She held back the word "useless".
"No, not at all!"
Vivian frowned but a shy smile appeared on her lips.
"Why?"
"'Cause memories are priceless," he answered. "The good ones just like the bad… That’s what makes one remember where they’re from, and who their folks are. It’s what shape one’s life…"
And she followed the improvisation notifications on his dialog chain, but the irony in all this also made her feel somewhat bitter.
"Do… do you know where you are, now?" she asked.
"Ain’t so sure," he answered, holding her gaze, frowning. "Feels… like a dream I already had…"
That wasn’t far from the truth, indeed.
"And it’s gonna be time to wake up, now."
"Alright…"
Unfortunately, Vivian didn’t have all the time she’d love to give him. She tapped on her tablet, biting her lower lip; all of his levels were green, nothing to report — he had her all clear.
"Are we gonna see each other again soon?"
The question made her raise her head, almost stunned; Vivian wasn’t on the interface where she could follow his dialog chain anymore but didn’t need it to recognise improvisation.
"You… you’d want that? I mean…"
She cleared her throat, mouthing a silent word, before rephrasing:
"Would you like that?"
"Sure!"
That answer pleased Vivian, anyway; she felt herself blush and stumbled upon her words until something coherent came to her mind.
"Well then, I… I’ll do my best. I promise."
Lawrence nodded, apparently satisfied, and Vivian held his gaze while taking a short breath.
"They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."
This time, it was Edgar Allan Poe’s prose Vivian had chosen to end her script, and stop the recording of his memories. None of what would happen after hearing those words would remain in Lawrence’s memory, unless she or another technician botched the wipe before sending him back in his narrative loop.
Vivian stayed with him until the cleanup was complete then disconnected the signal after putting him offline; she was already late for her next session but didn’t hurry all that much to tuck her tablet and get up. It was pissing her off to let him there, like that…
She let out a brief sigh then, after a look at her watch, she finally but reluctantly left the room.
The day didn’t only seem too long to Vivian; around 10PM, it had really started to drag on and it was about time to leave her be. Especially if some other guests were planning to unload their barrels during what little time she had left to sleep!
At least, Damon Dyers kept things cool on his side. Margaret had managed to get footages of his arrival in Sweetwater and his first steps in one of the easiest narratives, according to her, but she didn’t seem disappointed when offering them to take a look at those videos she had already viewed a good dozen times since on her tablet. She had been very chatty about his clothing, narratives, adventure companions, and even taking friendly bets on what he would do next…
"Everybody’s gonna be hyped like crazy outside when his review’s gonna hit the park website!" laughed Thawal, finishing what would be his last coffee cup for today.
Charles snorted.
"As if Delos needed more of that…"
Margaret nodded in approval, all the more when Luke added:
"No joke, that’s better than any of those stupid casting headshots! It’s the best career boost he could hope for, right now!"
"Not to burst it for you but, nobody is gonna see this outside," commented Vivian. "It was hard enough for Marge to get them in-house, so I can’t even imagine getting them out!"
To what Luke shrugged.
"Do you really believe that?! There’s nothing a few bucks under the table can’t buy, and footages instead of a crappy picture in Sweetwater is no big deal, I’m sure! It’s not like it’s IP or some shit…"
Margaret scoffed.
"I didn’t pay, not even fucked anybody to get them,” she muttered, openly cynical, as if her thoughts were escaping between her gritted teeth. “I’m trash but I didn’t stooped that low yet."
With Charles laughing like a braying donkey in the background, Luke corrected:
"That’s not what I meant, Marge! But yeah, thanks to prove my point all the same…Even Marge managed to put her hands on it, without shaking down her pockets or her ass, so imagine what you can get if you’re ready to drop some cash!"
Luke’s rhetoric seemed to get the point across as it was followed by a moment of silence around the table, and the tablet in its center, on which the patched-up hour of video feeds was still going.
"Anyhow, it makes nice memories to bring back home…"
Vivian pulled her attention away from the screen to stare at the focused — mesmerised — face of Thawal. He was right, it would make nice memories…
She bit her lower lip and turned back towards the tablet; suddenly, Dyers wasn’t the center of attention anymore, not even a guest who came to show off in the park — there was nothing else than people, hosts or guests it didn’t matter, listening to a more charismatic man than the others carrying a tune next to a player piano for the pleasure of his audience. And far from being corny or just lame, the scene even had something charming.
"And you said he’s going to Pariah, after that?"
Charles’ voice cut Vivian’s thoughts short.
"Yeah," answered Margaret. "He got there yesterday, I think…"
Margaret searched her video directory and selected one that spreaded across the entire screen; they could see Dyers and his two friends, lead by Teddy, on the trail of the narrative they had picked — a bounty hunt, if Vivian understood everything.
"It’s so fucking epic, Marge!" bursted Thawal, leaning over the tablet as if he wanted to dive in it. "Looks like another remake of the Magnificent Seven…"
"Except they’re only four," Charles snarked.
Thawal and Margaret glared at him, which made him laugh even more.
"I know, right?" Marge then admitted.
She turned towards Vivian, beaming with happiness. She smiled back but her mind was already elsewhere; somewhere around Las Mudas, she wasn’t quite sure yet…
On the screen, Dyers was continuing his adventure, like larping or a life size fanfiction. Now that Vivian was thinking about it, it had been a while since her last vacation…
She could maybe use her special employee discount, and do so to hold her promise?

Sleepless in the Castle
Remy can’t sleep, so he’s doing what he does best - getting lost at night and probably causing some trouble.
Set in @em-be-lievable‘s amazing AU, the Dragon Witch AU. Seriously, it’s so good.
PS Remy is mute in this AU, so if text is italicized and in quotes, it’s being signed. Regular quotes is spoken word.
Remy growled as he rolled out of bed, sighing as he realized that sleep was just not coming. He looked to the clock on the wall, it’s enchanted face telling the Monster Witch that it was, indeed, 1 AM.
He stood, wiggling his toes in distaste as they met the cold floor. He frowned at the floor. Virgil, seriously? He thought, knowing his rug had probably been stolen by the Dragon Witch he called a brother… again. He knew his brother wouldn’t give it back, damn his stupid hoard, so he was going to have to pester Patton for another to be sent.
In the mean time, he shuffled over to the closet where the little royal HAD given him something that would be of use now. He slipped on the fuzzy slippers that had been made for him by the little king as an apology for accidentally “kidnapping” Virgil oh so many moons ago. Really, that mistake was one no one regretted. Now, a few years on, his little brother was married and happier then ever, the Great Witches were given the recognition they deserved, and he lived in a fucking castle. He didn’t get lost at night anymore in the forest, leaving Virgil freaking out or something (because the boy was hella nervous about everything). Now he just wandered the castle grounds. Even so, he grabbed his robe – one possibly more extra then the ones Roman owned – and tucked his mirror into his pocket. This was no ordinary mirror, though. It was invented with a combination of Logan’s magic and the Mage Guild’s help. It was complex magic, even for a Witch, that allowed Remy and others to tap a code into the surface and ‘call’ to another. Right now, only a few were spread around the kingdom at the farthest reaches, connected to the castle’s main mirror for emergencies; however, each royal had a personal one, including the brothers of the newest Prince.
Remy opened his bedroom door instead of taking the balcony and going for a flight. He found his way down the hall, the warm lights spread out and casting their glow on him. From his robe, he pulled out one of his spare pairs of sunglasses but just tucked them on his head for now, his slit eyes that glowed purple and gold trailing around the halls, scanning better then any human’s could.
He stopped at the first door closest to his room and pushed it open quietly. Within was much brighter than the hallway and much warmer as a fire raged with all its magical and mundane glory, contained within a grand fireplace. The walls were lined with several… dozen… swords, some as old as the kingdom and others brand new, but all were perfectly balanced and usable in battle. While there was a bed, it was far from the fire, and instead a pile of blankets and cushions were pushed right up to the heat, a small body plopped on top and curled around a sword safely packed in its case. Remy snorted at the little body and couldn’t help himself as he entered.
Pulling out the enchanted mirror, he opened the compact and tapped his own tune into the panel. It ringed in gold as he pointed the mirror surface to face himself, showing the littlest Witch in the background. Remy smirked as he clicked the surface.
He forgot that the gold would flash to illuminate his face, and, even in the already bright room, the little witch groaned.
“Remy? Is that not you?” Dee groaned as Remy smirked. “What the absolute fuck did you not do?”
“Nothing.” Rent signed as he pulled a blanket over the lump with a little magic. “Go back to sleep.”
“Yes, please stay awake all night and roam the halls for all I care.” Dee threw. “Do you want to go back to your room now? Or do you want to leave mine?” The little snake slurred out, still in a sleepy haze.
Remy used one hand to pat the smallest’s hair as he finger spelled, “I’m good.” Once he had both hands back, he finished by saying, “Just gonna get a midnight stroll in, gurl. Go back to sleep. You DEF need your beauty rest.”
Deceit flopped back into his pillow, the universal sign of ‘I’m done talking to you,’ but he did throw Remy the bird as the other witch snickered, baking out of the room. He turned the mirror back to himself, the image displayed on the screen. He’d have to find some paper and magic it onto there. This was too adorable not to keep.
The next bedroom he also found empty, the room cold without its occupant, its heater, present. Unlike the last room, several rugs were meticulously rolled and stacked along the walls, several more overlapping on the floor. Some were of the finest wools and cottons in the most intricate designs, and others were threatening to fall apart from their age if not for magic, kept for their coziness or the memories they related to. Remy figured this room would be empty – Virgil slept better these days, but he almost never slept in his own room unless it was for a nap or someone was with him. More likely than not, he was somewhere in the castle, sleeping with his brothers or with his husbands.
Remy spotted his own rug, and the last one… so he waved his fingers, enchanting a spell as the two were now floating. He directed them to his room, where they unrolled on his floor. Payback, bitch. Remy thought, even though the rugs would probably be gone by the next evening.
Stupid brothers and their stupid hoards.
Remy walked with a thoughtful pace through the halls like he owned the place. A few of the night guards waved at him as he went, and he gave a few waves back. He came down to the main level where he found himself in the kitchens, his home away from home here in the castle.
Sure enough, his favorite person was up and working on a few snacks. The castle always had servants about in case the royalty ever needed anything, and this particular chef made the best coffee. Remy saw that they were focused on rolling dough, so he slid around the corner to be in their view. When they looked up, he greeted with a “Sup, gurl!”
Most people in the castle still didn’t understand his language aside from a few words and letters. Logan, that nerd, had actually gone around and taught everyone a few of his sayings and words, in case of emergencies probably, but it was also great to see a few guards practicing finger spelling when they thought he wasn’t looking. It was amazing.
This person, however, knew more than that. They actually knew a lot of Remy’s language as one of their nieces turned out to be mute, not by a curse but by their birth. Remy hadn’t even thought about it when he created his language, but it was appearing that there were more people who could use it. He’d eventually bit the bullet, for that reason, and sat down to detail his language in a book. He’d carefully drawn all of his words out and written up the meanings, and, with a little magic, managed to make a few copies to go around. Logan had actually hugged the thing he was so excited for new knowledge, and more than once he’d spotted Patton and Roman practicing with one another. A few copies floated out to libraries across the kingdom, including their own, and one landed in the hands of this wonderful person.
The person looked up just to catch the signs and smiled. “Duke Remy, loveky nigh for a stroll?” Steve noted as he stood. Steve was one of the best cooks in the castle, according to Remy. He probably used magic, but Remy hadn’t figured out how yet. “Late night?”
“Uhg, gurl, drop the ‘duke’ deal.” He signed.
“Duchess?”
“Bitch.”
“Now, if I called you ‘your royal highness Bitch Remy,’ the king would give me a lecture on language.” Steve threw as Remy laughed. “So, you want to talk about it or just the usual?”
Sometimes, Remy came down after having nightmares or being held up late at night with his own anxieties. Most of the time, though, it was just insomnia in general.
“Nah, boo, it’s just my disaster of a sleep schedule.” The cook nodded as he set the dough to the side. “Hey, has Virgil come down here yet?”
Steve blinked. “The Witch Prince?” Remy grabbed some flour and threw it at the cook, eliciting a chuckle from the man. “No, I have not seen Virgil since earlier this evening. He came by with the King for Hot Chocolate before bed. If you are concerned, check the other rooms he usually haunts next.”
Before Remy knew it, there was a piping hot cup of his favorite coffee in front of him. Steve did something to infuse cocoa and sugar into the mix, topping it off with a whipped cream. It was to die for.
Remy took a big gulp, ignoring the burn, and sighed in pure pleasure.
“You should really cut back on the caffeine this late.” Steve noted as he also slid a plate of cookies over before going back to the dough. “It’ll keep you up.”
“Who are you, Logan?” The monster witch threw. “I do what I want.”
Steve rolled his eyes as he put the dough on a plate. He turned to Remy as he smirked. “Yes, you make this very clear to everyone.”
Remy smiled brightly. It was one thing to be understood, but his pride in seeing his own language be given back to him was without words (even in his own hand). “Bro, you been practicing?”
“Yes, I have.” The man added before he slipped on mitts to grab the bread plate. “I should bring my niece by some time. She and you would get along like a castle fire.” He paused after slipping the bread into the oven. “But please don’t teach her any swear words.”
Remy chatted with Steve a little longer before he headed out again. It was now 2:30 in the morning, and Remy was now making his way up the Royal’s tower. These were the most heavily guarded rooms, and Remy just nodded to the guards as he went. Nobody stopped him. The one time a new guard had tried to, having not recognized Remy (“Really? How do you not know and treasure this face???”), they’d wound up not being able to stop him anyway and additionally being pranked.
He made it up to the king’s room. While most expected a grand entrance into His Majesty’s quarters, it was actually a simple door with a P on the door, pained as a child would. Remy opened the door quietly.
He looked across the grand room, ignoring the sofa covered in stuffed animals and the parchment pictures that had been framed – some of drawings by children of the kingdom and others Remy had created with his mirror and magic. The huge bed across the room was the size of two kings, but the singular lump to one side was easily picked out.

The air cargo industry is staring at a tidal wave
Here follows a short conversation between retail giant Amazon and IATA, as imagined by Alex Labonne, chief technology officer at Hermes Cargo Management Systems.
Amazon: “Given that we do pretty well at warehousing, it’s only logical for us to think about moving into ground handling”.
IATA: “You’ve got to use our SITA system, and there are other things…”
Amazon: “Nah, we don’t want to do that.”
IATA: “You must, otherwise you won’t be able to…”
Amazon [interrupting]: “You know what, I’ll use my own airline as well. I’ll use my own protocol, all the way. You guys do whatever it is you do, and we’ll do what we want to do.”

If industries now rise and fall according to how successfully they collect and manipulate data, air cargo is in trouble.
Despite predictions of volume growth and reassurances that 3D printing will not bring an end to world trade, there was a sense of foreboding among attendees at the Air Cargo Handling conference in Zaventem, on the outskirts of Brussels.
A wave of technological disruption is racing in from the horizon, and companies still operating as if this were the 1990s are set to be swept away.
Data - or rather, good data - is already what separates the profitable from the also-rans. If you can capture enough of it, and if you know how to analyse it, you can squeeze out that extra few percentage points of efficiency from your logistics chain: the 10% that makes the difference between profit and loss.
Alastair Band, who came to Belgium in a search of applications for blockchain technology, talked about Amazon and its plan to ship the goods you haven’t even thought about ordering yet to your nearest distribution centre. If the data predicts that you will buy face-cream this month, because you buy it every other month, then why not have a pot ready and waiting, just a few minutes from your front door?
While the likes of Amazon and China’s Alibaba ramp up their robotics-controlled warehouses, some legacy air cargo handlers still rely on old-fashioned brawn to prepare pallets for loading. Worse still: many are drowning in paper documents.
The amount of paper produced in 2018 by the air cargo industry is an embarrassment, conference panellists agreed. Agents routinely throw away reams at the end of every working day because their customers, believing that everything has been digitalised, don’t bother to pick it up.
‘Digitalisation’ for some in the industry means scanning a paper document and sending it as an email attachment, which would be laughable if it were not for the fact that some haven’t even got this far.
The fact that industry bodies are talking today of developing a worldwide barcode standard says it all. “Come on guys,” commented one attendee. “Bar codes are technology from 20 or 30 years ago, and we’re still scratching our heads asking how we can implement it.”
“Amazon and Alibaba are not waiting,” warned Céline Hourcade, head of cargo transformation at IATA. “The market is susceptible to being shaken up by new entrants.”
Everyone in Zaventem recognised that modernisation was well overdue. There was talk of “making cargo talk” with microchips that could theoretically also measure temperature and any damage-causing shocks. The buzzwords were all there: new facilities must be “future-proof”; drones and artificial intelligence will carve out a niche. All agreed on the need to move on from tracking consignments to individual parcels so as to latch onto the e-commerce wave and compete with the integrators.
But there was the inescapable impression that the old-fashioned ways of doing business, the ways that still predominate, mean the industry of today may not be up to the task. “We come to conferences like this, discuss initiatives and then go home and do nothing,” lamented Hendrik Leyssens, head of operations at Cargo Swissport International.
‘Doing nothing’ has not been ruinous for the past 30 years, but in it could now be fatal.
To start with, those who do nothing are unlikely to profit from the growth in e-commerce. This new business is benefitting integrators rather than traditional handlers, conferences attendees heard.
Legacy companies must “wake up” to the fact that integrators are eating into their heavy cargo business, said Hans Van Shaik, sales manager at Saco Airport Equipment. “E-commerce growth is tremendous,” he said. “Consignments are increasing in weight and integrators are handling 100 kg, 150 kg packages.”
Handlers cannot compete with the integrators’ ability to both keep track of individual items and move them fast.
“It’s going to go worldwide,” Van Shaik (who, let us remember, has equipment to sell) warned. At integrator hubs in Brussels and Liege there are now 300 to 400 workstations, while at Leipzig there are 700, he said. There’s not much difference between shipping a package and shipping a pallet. “If you can do it for parcels, then why not for pallets?” he asked. The slide on the wall behind him showed a piano, which typically weighs 200 kg, being shipped by an express carrier.
Given that e-commerce is supposed to make up for the small drop in volumes that will be lost to 3D printing – estimated to amount to between 2% and 5% of total volumes, mostly furniture - traditional handlers are on the losing side of this equation.
And that’s before the second wave of disruption hits.
Amazon’s fleet of 40 freighters was brought up in almost every conversation during the coffee breaks. When Amazon and Alibaba realise that they can improve their margins by using their own ground handlers, an era will come to an end.
Part of the problem is scale. Handlers without sizeable cashflow don’t have the financial clout to invest in robotics, it was reported. Ludwig Hausmann, a partner at McKinsey & Company, pointed out that Google makes more profit on its own than the entire air cargo industry.
That said, the chief executives of profitable companies have been guilty of complacency.
“Cargo protagonists could have done a whole lot of things, but no-one wants to pay for it,” said Labonne. “The standards are low and not good enough, especially the heavy standards. If people want to survive the Amazon or the Alibaba, they have to invest. The fragmentation is a lot of the time in people’s minds.”
Attempts by IATA and others to encourage the spread of technology with top-down standards are doomed to failure because that’s not how technology propagates, says Labonne. Trying to pick a winning standard, much like attempts to predict which hardware or software will be used in the next five to ten years, is futile. “Have we heard this before?” asks Labonne. “We have heard it forever. Everyone’s going to have the same laptop, the same desktop”. Every two years comes the latest trend, and the predictions are soon forgotten and recast.
“Things don’t evolve that way,” Labonne continues. “For me, interfaces are always between two protagonists. That’s fragmented, but that’s the way the world is. Believe you me, Amazon systems are not that standardised, not that uniform. That’s how Amazon managed to grow so quickly.
“They weren’t too fussed about a uniform support. What they were fussed about is that when they had interfaces, they were tested. If somebody broke something, it was known.” Tolerant systems, rather than rigid standards, allow for patching and growth. “You have to be stringent with what you send and tolerant with what you receive, it’s called Postel’s Law,” says Labonne, quoting one of the guiding principles of data interchange over the internet.
“In terms of interfaces, we all speak different languages, we all operate differently. When you try to string [a new standard] across the world, you’re chasing windmills. You’ll be the Don Coyote swinging at windmills. Half the people will use it and the other half won’t” because the other half simply don’t want to.
Cargo intermediaries should instead make their interfaces public and allow others to link up without any top-down imposition. “It’s an organic system, and that’s how things grow,” says Labonne. “This is how Alibaba and Amazon have grown.” Attempts to force transport onto one single standard are “irrelevant”. It’s the equivalent of carving principles on stone tablets, he says.
Given that few in the industry are prepared to take the coming threat seriously, and given that it will soon be too late, the best hope for legacy players might be to become food for predators. “If the Amazon wave happens, the race will be about who is going to be bought,” says Labonne. “I think everyone has to invest a bit more. That to me is the biggest issue.”
While the fatalistic mind set seemed to have taken hold among many conference attendees, it was not universal. “It isn’t going to happen,” said Sebastiaan Scholte, chairman of The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) and ceo of Jan De Rijk Logistics. “Alibaba can’t compete with the belly network,” Scholte said. He then pondered, and added: “Anyway, this industry needs disrupting.”
The worldwide network of belly capacity would indeed be difficult for the giant retailers to recreate quickly, unless drones become commonplace. This argument would suggest however that handlers could well be pushed onto minor, secondary routes as the Alibaba et al set up shop.
The problem, in essence, is that the fragmented air cargo industry suffers from low levels of trust. “We have to stop keeping data to ourselves,” was the recurring conference refrain.
The advantages of sharing data were laid out. The automobile industry has managed to reduce the cycle for producing new models from seven years to two through collaboration.
While some attendees were wringing their hands ahead of what could be an apocalypse, others have been spurred to action.
Citing Amazon’s fleet investment as one of the triggers, the Brussels airport air cargo community has with the financial support of the Flemish Government over the last two years worked hard to “demolish the silos” between the various players in the logistics chain. Via a not-for-profit umbrella organisation, 142 cargo community members have pooled their training and lobbying efforts. Their jointly-created applications for slot booking and customs clearance have brought about efficiencies, bringing down clearance times in particular. Members lend their experts to the many community steering committees, while youngsters are encouraged to bond, literally, at speed-dating evenings.
Zaventem did witness some inspired thinking. Why not combine baggage handling with express parcels under the arrivals lounge, one member of the audience asked? But the airports themselves were seen as a brake on innovation. Airport owners are often unsympathetic to the needs of the air cargo industry. Given that passengers and duty free bring in more profit, will handlers inevitably be pushed further and further from the runway?
Will full freighters be forced to operate exclusively from secondary airports? Should airports be publicly owned so as to reflect the interests of all users, not just the most profitable sectors? Can airport designers be lobbied before they lay down their plans?
To get to the root cause of what now afflicts air cargo, it may be necessary to go back to the drawing board. But if that’s just not feasible, handlers will have to make do with the latest iteration of track-and-trace systems (such as the one being put together by pharmaceutical handlers).

You dragged your pillow and your blanket all the way to Room 305, where Ned, Peter, Michelle and Rowan were awaiting your arrival. You knocked on their door a few times, before deciding to call one of them. As you unlocked your phone, the door swung open to reveal Rowan in a baggy t-shirt and a pair of shorts.
You plopped yourself down on the couch as you hugged your pillow tightly. You stared at the television, not paying attention to the movie playing.
“Hey Y/N, you okay, man? What did you mean by you were fucked in the groupchat?” Ned asked you, bringing a bowl of ice-cream to eat.
You snatched the ice cream from him and started eating it as he looked at you in shock.
“Okayyyyy, that means our girl is in big trouble now. Ok, honey spill the tea,” Michelle announced.
You told them everything about how to tried to kill Mr Harrington and how you are stuck with an annoying dumbass as a roommate.
“Oh shit, bro. That’s so bad. I would probably go crazy if I was in your shoes,” Rowan slung an arm around you as you kept eating Ned’s ice-cream.
“Where’s Pete?” you asked, realizing the absence of your friend.
“Oh, he’s at the library to do some revision. He did text me saying that he is on his way,” Ned replied.
You nodded your head, setting down your bowl of ice-cream on the table. You heard a knock on the door and went to open it. You saw Tom standing there.
“Tom, what are you doing here?” you asked, confused.
“What do you mean, Y/N? I am Peter,” Peter clarified, knocking you into your senses.
“Oh, sorry. It’s just that my mind is pretty messed up these days,” you scratched the back of your neck, trying to cover up the fact that you mistook him for Tom Fucking Holland.
He gave you a boyish smile which made your knees weak. It’s not that you didn’t like him, maybe you did. It’s just that you were too afraid to tell him that you like him and no one knows about your not-so-little crush on him.
“Why are you here? Wait, I didn’t mean it like that! uhm, uhm,” he started to stutter, making a mess out of himself.

You reached for the nearest magazine and started reading it as you waited for Peter. As the bathroom door opened, you smelled the manly smell of his body gel. Peter walked in with a towel loosely hanging on his hips, his rock hard abs on show for you.

They say, it's all about the first line. So now that's over and done with, hi, my name's Nathan. Originally from the UK, but now (and I've always said this as a bit of a joke, but these days it has new meaning), happily trapped in south east Asia. My almost 9 month old Son is doing just great. My wife's family are certifiably crazy, which wasn't a problem till we started living with them. Unfortunately, it's rubbing off on me, and I'm stuck here between a rock, and a bit of a pickle. Not the place I intended to be, whilst raising my first and probably only child.
Thanks to the madness currently possessing the world, my options, just like most people's, are thin on the ground. But as a foreigner in this country, with no government bail out like I'd be getting back home, I expect I'm currently somewhere towards the top end of the world's poverty chart… I've chosen not to openly disclose where I am exactly, as publishers in this country need to exercise a very careful caution, and the laws here regarding slander and defamation of character, mixed up with my legal status, could end up making my situation much worse. I'm not trying to cast a negative light on this place, but it might sometimes seem that way, with how I write about it. I love this place, I just hate this situation and feel so helpless.
I realise I may also at times sound very unappreciative. That's because I am... my body doesn't appreciate white rice every meal of every day. And though I'm used to picking things out of my food, when bugs are a part of the recipe, it feels a bit rude. My lungs don't appreciate the smell of burning bottles every night, and I'm sick of moving the big piles of plastic that mount up outside the room where my son sleeps. I'm also not too keen on the kitchen knife under his pillow, this turned up there, not because of my wife's heavy hands waking him up in tears, but the bad dreams caused by the ghosts. And even though we all know the only way to scare a ghost away is with cutlery, I think I'd prefer a bad dream every once in a while, than one time having a kitchen knife lodged in my neck.
All this being said, I have chosen, for many reasons (and very few alternatives), to ride this out as long as possible for the sake of my Son. The book I am writing explains my situation, and by reading it you should be able to fill in the very odd, small gap. But if not, fire me a message and we'll have a chin-wag.
In a nutshell, I was robbed of the money for my renewal of a very important document by a tour operator. Due to my own naivety, and being busy working in a different city, it was almost 3 months before I realised there was a problem. At the time, my wife was pregnant, and the little money I had was to take care of the hospital bill. After taking some bad advice, I scraped together $500 and paid someone who's family are high up in government and the police, to sort the problem out (at the time, the standard practice was to lock people up waiting for someone back home to cough up). Now, I'm down an extra $500, and the document I need to pass through ports is nowhere to be seen. Which is a bit of a worry. I've been here long enough, seen it all before, and by now have learnt that there's nothing much I can do to sort this, without having the cash to pay the overstay. And going to my embassy wouldn't do any good either, they can't help me out of this, not if I don't have the funds.
The area we now live in is very rural, nothing but farmland for miles around. My skill set is absolutely useless out here. I've spent most of my time in this country working in tourism, mainly managing guesthouses, a skill I'm very thankful for being able to pick up. At the time the world began to fall apart, I was project managing the build of an eco-resort. I wasn't making much, but the potential was there. My manager made the right decision at the time, and cut his losses. A few months later my wife gave up and went back to her parents while I kept trying. But when she told me her and her family (that day there were 5 people not including children), were sharing 2 eggs between them, I decided to come back too. I know what these people are like, and can't let my son grow up like them.
When he was born, I was told it would be 6 weeks before we could get out and back to work. It had been 2 months when I was told the in-laws wanted us to go back to work, leaving my child here. Another month later and they finally got the message. There's no way I'm leaving my boy with a man who gives 3 year olds energy drinks at 8am, while the rest of the family spend their time beating and screaming at him as he's got too much energy, or is crashing from the sugar. This poor boy has all black stumps for teeth on the top row, no pants on all day as he rolls around in the dirt people have been pissing in, and takes worming tablets. This boy, does not need energy drinks. Grandma, loves giving the 22 month old, the dregs of her antihistamine medicine. It tastes nice, so it must be good. Ma can't read the back of packets, instructions or warnings.
Now, the only real option I have is farm work on the family plot. I did this last time we were here when our son was born, usually earning somewhere between $3.75 & 7.50 every 2 days. This time of year, the farm is out of season. Once this years crop is ready, the total worth of the farm's produce will be around $5.00 every 2 days as the 1st month creeps by. This time around, as it looks like I'll be staying for the foreseeable future, I've got to come up with a real plan, I can't put up with this much longer. I used to be vegetarian, and though we're surrounded by farms, I haven't seen a vegetable in 10 days. Now I eat fish heads.. the cheeks, the brains, their faces. I give the eyes to my wife's brothers…I had to draw the line somewhere.
My only way of making a decent wage out here, is to work online. Ideally I'd like to teach English. But most of the day, we're in a black hole for data connection, and with the lack of a certain document, signing up as a teacher isn't possible anyway.
So what's the plan? Well, I guess I'll carry on clutching at straws, keep writing the book, prepare the land for this years harvest and raise the boy. Plenty to keep me busy, but I need way out of this, before my boy grows up like his feral cousins. I feel like I'm living in a George Orwell book, and I don't mean 1984, that's the outside world. We're still stuck on Animal Farm.
I always thought I'd be somewhere in my 50s/60s, when I finally thought about penning my first book. When I had something to write about, and my fingers couldn't handle playing music any longer... As it turns out, I have plenty to write about, and it's spilling out with ease. I've always written, but a novel seemed a little too daunting to even think about. I wouldn't like to guess just how many songs I've written since my first, 25 years ago (which was terrible, and I hate that I still remember it). But the 2 albums trapped in my head are pretty good, at least I recon so. Hopefully they will see the light of day, at some point in the future.
I started the novel on the night of the 21st December 2020, and as of today - 29th Dec, I'm over the 10,000 word marker (though I've been doing a daily, rough edit as I go, I've been advised to try and avoid this, but I wanted the intro to be somewhat polished for upload). I'm hoping to entice some of you in, with the first few chapters. If it's something you're into, super duper. I'm looking for 'donations', to help my family out of this situation, but all donors will receive a copy of the book when finished, and after it's final edit.

Heck, use it to promote your auntie's dog wash service, see if I care. Could be quite interesting, and sounds like fun to me.
At the rate that I'm writing, I expect to be in the final editing stage by about mid February.
The novel is written as a fiction, but at the same time, is almost completely autobiographical. Names and places have been changed to help protect our safety here, but the story, and its characters are real. I can promise that, as I'm living it.
And just before I get back to work, I must say… I know that sometimes my use of punctuation, Capitals, and commas, may be a little unorthodox,,, but just so you know, I do know most of what I'm doing wrong, I did fairly well in school (not so bad)… but, I knew better… and still think that I might. And besides, I've got some good friends back home with already published work, who are going to help with the final cut… I've not pestered them so much as of yet, and what's down currently, is me with very little coaching, but with a little help from my friends, in the end, it'll brush up alright. Although I am a true 'pantser' in life in general and writing this whilst in the thick of it, day by day. I do have my main outline. Connect Road
Hi! I’m gonna make a quick connect road tutorial/guide because I haven't’ seen any and it could be helpful. If anyone has anything they’d like to add to this go ahead and tell me!
SO When you first get in the game after putting in your name and all that jazz, you’ll see a screen like this (TIP: You should be able to download this game through the Qoo app safely if you don’t live in Japan.)
Theres a lot going on I know but it’s not that hard to wade through. These are what all your buttons do anyway, or at least all the ones I know.
The point of the game is to collect characters, or cards, and use them to win races in a connect-bubbles kind of style.
Connect the little bubbles that match your cards and where you’re at. Blue is for all rounders (Fukutomi, Midousuji) red is for climbers (Manami, Onoda) and green is for sprinters (Naruko, Aoyagi) there are also what are called hope characters which are purple (Specials cards such as Sugimoto and Kaburagi), purple only appears if you have those cards on your team.
The more balls you connect, the more damage you deal. You can to connect red ones when you’re on hills and green when you’re on flats or downhill, blue can be anywhere. The other teams health bars will be displayed above their heads, you automatically attack the one to your left, but you can tap the one to your right and target them if you’d like.
If you're Stamina reaches zero, you lose, so make sure to watch that! Also make sure to watch where you are; if you use climbing on flats, it’ll still work, but it won’t be as effective.
I usually save the Hime thing for the end where its just the ace and assist, but use it if you’re in trouble. The “big boom thingy” will clear your board of all the bubbles (Including power ups and stamina) and will deal damage to the enemies. Use it wisely.
There will also be yellow bubbles that give points to your cards skill, which I’ll talk more on later, but when you get enough bubbles of their certain color,you can activate the characters skill (The ones that say “ok” over them are ready)

In the club room, click on the cards button on the bottom of the screen and you’ll get here.
1. You have 4 tabs, each can hold their own team. You can put the same card in different teams, or make completely new ones. When you’re entering a level, you can select what team you’d like to use (A,B,C, or D)
2. This is your main team. The one at the very front if your Ace, and the second if the assist. Your ace and your assist should be all -rounders because there will be ace battles, which could be on either hills or flats. The rest can be set up however you like it. Just click on cards and then click on the spot you can them to go. you can tap cards and other cards to swap them, or if you hold the card for a moment it’s stats will show up, which I’ll explain in a minute.
3. This lil number n the corner here will go up as you go up in rank. It’s a sort of cap, which prevents you form having two many high cards on your team at a low level. Kinda dumb but whatever.
4. Click this button to save everything you’ve done and go back to the club room
STATS
google translate doesn’t like this picture, but anyway this is the important stuff. You’ve got your stamina up top, flat speed, climbing speed, and I’m pretty sure like fighting spirit, competitive will, guts. Idk what the last three got to do with anything but those little blue numbers on the side are bonuses added on by items, which I”ll get to later again!
Stats are important, the stamina is combined with the rest of the teams stamina to make your overall stamina bar in a race. The higher the star count means the higher your base stats are, your stats get higher when you level them up through experience in races or with the rollers, which I’ll get to. The higher the stats are, the more damage your card will do in a race when you get big combos.
Special little things are sort of a bonus reaction thing, they say quotes when you race and you collect them by putting the characters in different situations. Its not a specific science but it’s cute.
The bottom is just all the other versions of that character you have, and what ones you don’t.
SKILLS is on the other tab, which are usually bonuses to damage the opponent. however, some cards have different skills, which are not specific to a character. Sometimes I don’t know what the skill does, some skills change balls to a different color, some eat all the ones of their color on the screen and use it to beat the shit out of your opponents. Test it out and stuff!
LEVELING UP AND STUFF
To make your skills require less bubbles, feed them food! A characters favorite food will give you double experience points, but some food have a crazy amount of experience points so it doesn’t matter. It’ll say it when you’re on your list of food.
Click on items in your room and toggle with these buttons to do stuff. It’s around the same for other items that don’t do stuff, but obviously some are missing buttons because you can’t do stuff with them.
Rollers give experience to their level, food gives experience to their skill, sleeping in the bed gives experience to their maximum level. I have no idea what the barbells do. This all requires time, which will be displayed in a meter above the characters head while they’re interacting with the item. Better rollers take longer but give more experience, better tables dont’ change the experience but lower the time, I’m not sure with the beds. Put cards to work on these things while you’re not playing.
GACHAS & THE STORES
These are what your gold coins are for! Sopend em to get some good cards. the 11 for 250 guarantees you a 5 star, but warning; this can be any five star thats usually in these gachas, so this does not guarantee that it’ll be the 5 star listed in the gachas promo. Kind of crappy but eh. You can also get five stars through events and as race prizes, but I’ll talk about that later too. You get coupons in events, which will give you one card.
STORE
This is where you can buy items that help your characters! Flick through the tabs, they sell pretty much everything that's not event only. Click on the picture to see what it does, usually +1 to a stat, and click the pink button if you wanna buy it. You have a limited amount of items you can hold, however.
Click through the blue tabs for different stuff. This tab has all the stuff that needs to be put ON something, so a blanket or a shelf, but it’ll power up your dudes. The green button puts it away, it’s the same button lets you put it down when it’s in your inventory. When it’s put away, you can also sell the thing with the greyed out button that will be blue or yellow I think. This is good cause you’ll get gifts from dudes sometimes that you don’t want, and you have limited space for everything, including backgrounds and walls/floors. (numbers indicated in the top right corner in the purple box)
anything you buy will go to your items thing other than floors/walls/background, which can be accessed through the button on the pull out menu on your club room screen to the right
RACING
This is your map!
Usually the ones you haven’t gotten to yet are grey, the ones you need to beat are blue, and the ones where you’ve beaten all the difficulty levels are gold. The map is good for between events when you want to grind experience and get food/ money.
the special map is the same as the main one, BUT WAIT. you won’t be actually racing- you send off your team to race on their own, they’ll come back after the meter is full. This can take a long damn time, and sometimes fucks up for some reason on giving you prizes, so be careful. I”d clear the main map before you touch that.
the amount of stamina you need if that ten above the B rank, that changes depending on the level.
EVENTS
Losta fun stuff! Do the events to get lots of goodies. They also usually have a 4 or 5 star prize if you can go through all the achievements, which are earned through getting event points.
The stars are important- you’ll have to beat all of them to get to the hardest, but try to match the stars up to the level for stars on your cards. If the majority of your cards are three stars or bellow, don’t try for a five star one, you’ll waist your stamina.
The pictures are for that weird screenshot tab. You get them naturally through the achievements, but you have to go tap theme every time you get a little Onoda sticker peeler. Idk what they do yet, but collect them anyway aha.

When you’re about to go into the level (by clicking on one of the difficulty levels) you’ll get this screen
If you select an event point boost, you spend the gold coin over it, but it multiplies your event points that you earn in the level by what number you chose. so say I picked 5 and went into the level with 500 points at the bottom, I’d get 2500. This is wasted if you lose the level. Be careful. Usually they’ll give you one free 5x per day or 3x.
you can also get boosts by having specific cards on your team. That extra all rounder multiplies my points by 1.5, which is a real help. They’ll usually specify which ones will do this by having them as a reward in the achievement tab or in a separate tab that sometimes comes up.
FRIENDS
you can have friends on this!
The grey button is to visit them, the red one is to delete them. Watch out! When you’re accepting a friend request, the red one is accept, it should appear as a little icon on the bottom of your screen in the club room. Friends are good, because you can visit their rooms and get back stamina like one a day or something. Theres a limit to how many you can go through, but you get 20 from you friends and only 10 from strangers.
click the GOOD Button to get stamina. If it were a stranger, click the button above that to send them a friend request. click the back arrow at the top when you want to leave, and the back arrow again to go back to your own room.

What is a Good Landing Page Conversion Rate?
You're generating traffic and converting leads, but is it enough?
With no clear picture of whether or not you're on the right track, it's easy to feel stuck. So, to help unstick you, we've decided to shed some light on the situation and address the all-too-common question - "what is a good landing page conversion rate?"
We've also collected five examples of landing page elements worth experimenting with if you find that it's time to get your numbers up.
The truth about landing page conversion rates
Factors like your industry, product or service, and your target audience all weigh in on your ability to convert visitors into leads, and leads into customers.
However, I'm fully aware that people love their numbers, so I dug up some to shine a little data on the situation:
The chart above reveals that the average conversion rate falls around 2.35%. The keyword here is average.
A closer look reveals that the top 25% are converting at 5.31% and above, while the top 10% are looking at 11.45% and above, but, it’s important to realize this graphic is focusing on conversion rate on the account as a whole, not single landing pages.
So we know what the benchmark is for a website, but what about a landing page alone?
In this report, Unbounce studied the performance of 74.5 million visits to more than 64,000 lead generation landing pages created within its platform by Unbounce customers. The landing pages spanned across 10 different industries (travel, real estate, business consulting, business services, credit/lending, health, higher education, home improvement, legal, and vocational studies/job training).
What it uncovered was truly interesting.
The best conversion rate varied significantly across all the industries, while median conversion rate hovered between 3-5.5%.
But, as I mentioned earlier, your conversion rate will still vary due to the type of industry you're in, the offers you put out, and your audience's behavior.
After seeing this data, you may realize your conversion rate numbers either aren't where they need to be, or better yet, have room for improvement.
I recently came across a quote during one of my Pinterest-binges that lends itself really well to this situation:
"Why settle for average when amazing is attainable?"
So while the average median conversion rate of all 10 industries hover around 4%, the businesses within those who stand out are the ones that refuse to settle.
To help inspire your business to rise up, we've put together some landing page improvement tips aimed at turning a good conversion rate into an amazing one:
1) Clearly Convey the Value
Many of us create fantastic content for our readers that quickly become meaningless because it’s hidden behind a call-to-action (CTA) that provides no value to your users.
When users come across a CTA, they need to immediately see the gain of clicking it. If that value isn’t clear enough, users instead concern themselves not with what they are gaining, but the cost of clicking.
What You Need to Do
Don’t focus on copy that explains what the user needs to do to receive your content. Instead, use copy that outlines the benefits the offer has and the pain points it relieves. Make sure the value of clicking outweighs the cost.
Also, be explicit in the copy you use on your button. Button copy like ‘Submit’ or ‘Buy It’ are extremely generic and vague.
‘Submit’ masks what the action is and leaves users wondering what they are actually receiving on that next page. ‘Buy’ is just as bad and reminds users that there is the next step of actually having to pay for something, causing them to forget about value over cost.
Examples
experimented with changing their call-to-action at the bottom of their essays from ‘Read Full Essay Now’ to ‘Get Instant Access Now’. Although the later was more actionable, it failed to mention what they were getting access to. This led to a 39% decrease in their conversion rate. Yikes!
What does really well is leveraging its value proposition to ensure that all of their visitors can easily identify the benefit of using Unbounce landing pages.
Rather than a button that just says ‘learn more’, Unbounce explicitly says what they will see and learn about on the next page.
2) Reduce Risk
According to Dr. Robert Cialdini, a psychology professor at Arizona State University,“People see an action as more appropriate when others are doing it.”
Depending on the action users need to fulfill to receive the benefit, adding something extra to assure their information is safe, or that others have also participated helps users feel more comfortable.
What You Need to Do
. It means “most people would prefer a sure outcome than to take a risk at something that has potentially higher value.”
So although the value you are converting may be high, if they don’t feel there is a guaranteed value behind their conversion, then they won’t convert.
In an effort to make people feel more comfortable about taking next steps, consider the benefit of including a testimonial or alternative bit of social proof on your landing page.
If you are selling a product, buyer testimonials or badges that assure safe, virus-free transactions are some relievers.
Examples
not only puts a testimonial front and center on their homepage, but makes sure it supports the value proposition and outlines a potential benefit of signing up. Knowing you can save time saves money is a pretty compelling statement.
saw a 400% increase in its conversion rate by adding the ‘Secure’ badge above the fold in their sidebar. This assured users that clicking the 'use coupon' button wasn't going to be downloading anything malicious on their computer.

3) Leverage Scarcity and Urgency
Scarcity is the feeling that a product is in short supply and that a short period of time, it will run out.
But scarcity alone isn’t the key to creating that demand. It’s a combination of the value of that item as well as trust within the vender that that deal will ceace when the deadline hits or the quantity hits 0.
What You Need to Do
The first thing you need to do it pick what will drive that urgency.
This could be the deadline for a sale, the quantity of a product you have, the end date of a program you’re running, etc.
Then, you need to stick to it.
Depending on the audience's level of interest in the offer, do not extend the deadline of when you can receive it, or worse, change the quality left of it. This will break down trust between you and the people converting since it now seems you’ve lied to them to entice them. You can however, extend it if you notice conversions are very low, and you want to experiment with tactics to increase conversions on it, but be wary of doing so.
Once you have your offer, dates, and/or quantity is set, it's all up to you how you want to present it.
Make sure you make any elements that promote the urgency obvious enough so there is a distinction between the normal deal. You can start doing this by using keywords such as promote urgency are ‘now’, instant’, ‘hurry’, etc. psychologically to get the user's attention to act.
Examples
He found that, while the same number of people signed up for the 14-day trial as they did the 30-day trial, 102% more people used the product when they signed up for the 14-day trial.
has also mastered this principle by creating urgency when there are low quantities of items. And to add a little more value, they also sneak in the copy below that specifies how much time you have left if you need the item immediately.
So long as Amazon doesn’t disappoint with the arrival time of one-day shipped packages, people will know to put their trust in that time frame when ordering in the future too.
4) Eliminate Distractions
As the optimizer, it is your job to make sure you are drawing your users attention to the most desired action on the page, almost like a magician.
As CopyHackers Joanna Wiebe explains, “magicians manage your attention by compelling you to notice what they want you to notice. Once they have your attention, they can adjust your perception to make you focus on something…”
Once you know what users should focus on, you need to use the way you lay it out, color, and form on your website to attract users.
What You Need to Do
First, you need to figure out your most wanted action. To do so, recommends you ask two questions:
What’s the action you want your visitors to take most?
What action do your visitors want to take most?
These two questions help you make sure that the action you are choosing is realistic and aligns with what your audience is doing.
For example, say you want your users to subscribe to your blog, yet, you only ever show the subscribe CTA at the bottom of blog articles. Due to its placement, most people are probably focusing on the blog article, and aren't scrolling to the end to see it.
You need to make sure you are giving users the ability to focus their attention on the right spot. If it’s not easily accessible, or obvious, no one's going to convert.

By keeping the design of their landing page minimal, is able to place an emphasis on their form and call-to-action.
Notice that they've eliminated the navigation to ensure that visitors won't wander off the page, but rather stick around to convert.

5) Reduce Friction
, your conversion rate improves by almost half when the number of form fields is reduced from four fields to three.
It all comes back to value, if you find yourself creating a 10-field form for a standard eBook, chances are filling it out will not outweigh the value received on that eBook.
What You Need to Do
Friction can come in many different forms, but one of the most common problems tends to be with how forms are structured and organized.
First, make sure you consider the value of the offer; is it a webinar, one Ebook, ten Ebooks? Then, brainstorm the value and benefits the offer(s) will bring your users.
You can then use this value to begin formulating how many fields, and what types, to show your user.
One ideal strategy when deciding this is to go a field or two less than the value, rather than trying to match it. This technique can impress your users if they recognize they don't need to do as much on their end to recieve your offer, leading to more conversions.
Above all, make it easy for your users to figure out what they need to do, and don’t hit them with barriers that lead their expectations astray.
Examples
has managed to slim down their form to just three fields making it appear more inviting and less time-consuming. There isn’t even a credit card field which eliminates the concern of having to put some form of payment upfront before even trying the product.
Kyle Rush led an interesting where they tested one full donation form vs. the same one that sequentially went through each question, but was ultimately the same length. The outcome was a 5% increase in conversion rate on it since users felt visually less overwhelmed when looking at the form.
Sometimes it all comes back to visual impact. If you chunk out the action in small bites so it's easy for visitors to complete, they may be more willing to do it.

The Raw Exposé: The Beast vs. The Black Sheep of the Samoan Dynasty Edition (6-12-2017)

Hello everyone and welcome to another installment of The Raw Exposé. Tonight’s episode of Monday Night Raw emanated from the Lafayette Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana. After Samoa Joe choked out Paul Heyman on last week’s show, Heyman vowed that The Beast would be unleashed and Joe will cower in fear. Did Lesnar deliver the goods or did he stand in the ring like a statue per his usual cameo appearances? The answer to that question can be found throughout this blog. Without further ado, let’s dissect tonight’s episode of Raw in no particular order.
Samoa Joe proved that he was man enough to take on Brock Lesnar when he attacked The Beast head on to kick off the opening segment of Raw.
The Lesnar-Joe brawl was pretty good as both men got some licks in before Kurt Angle called for security. Both men quickly got rid of the extra muscle and resumed their fight until the rest of the locker room came out to break things up for good.
Joe got the last shot when he kicked Lesnar in the face as the opening segment came to an end.
Paul Heyman set things up beautifully as he cut a fiery promo about how he took Joe too lightly by heaping him with praise only to get choked out for his efforts.
Because of Joe’s actions, The Beast was unleashed and there would be hell to pay. Heyman blasted Joe for being a punk and mutt who gave his Samoan brethren a bad name because he was considered the black sheep of the family. Heyman claimed that Joe wasn’t man enough to put Brock Lesnar in the Coquina Clutch which caused Joe test that theory by going toe-to-toe with The Beast.
He didn’t lock in his submission hold, but the Samoan Badass proved that he wasn’t afraid to knock Lesnar on his ass and live to tell the tale.
Overall, this was a hot way to start the show. The Joe-Lesnar brawl was similar to the epic fight between Lesnar and The Undertaker from a couple of years ago. This didn’t pack the same punch, but it was a solid pull-apart scuffle that built anticipation for their Universal Championship match at the July PPV That Shall Remain Nameless Unless Absolutely Necessary.
Elias Samson defeated Dean Ambrose with a Swinging Neckbreaker after The Miz and Maryse came out to provide the distraction down the stretch. The Drifter continues to get heat by sucking as a singer, but his in-ring work is very basic which caused some fans to shower him with “You Can’t Wrestle” chants midway through the match. I hope he can work out the kinks because his gimmick has the potential to get over if it’s handled properly.
This was a nice way to forward the never ending Intercontinental Championship feud between Miz and Ambrose. Let’s hope both stars part ways at next month’s PPV because it’s time for them to move on to bigger and better things.
Cedric Alexander made quick work of Noam Dar when he pinned him with the Lumbar Check. Alicia Fox facetiming Dar before and during his match was very annoying.
“Why be a king when you can be a God?” – Eminem.
That quote from the song “Rap God” sums up the promo exchange between Bray Wyatt and Seth Rollins. Anyone who used Wyatt’s name in vain would be judged accordingly. Rollins was amused that Wyatt took offense to his false prophet and wannabe martyr comment from last week. He challenged Wyatt to prove him wrong, but Wyatt pulled a Houdini by disappearing into thin air and cutting the rest of his promo from the big screen. He told Rollins that it was easy to slay a king while killing a God is an impossible feat to pull off. Wyatt told Rollins to run as the segment came to an end.
It’s hard to take Wyatt seriously after he lost to Roman Reigns last week. He takes a good game, but he can’t back up in the ring on a consistent basis. Wyatt feuding with Rollins is more nay than yay when it comes to history repeating itself. We shall see if I’m proven wrong in the weeks to come.
Apollo Crews defeated Kalisto with a Spinout Powerbomb in a decent match. It wasn’t as good as their kickoff bout at Extreme Rules last Sunday, but the action was solid for the most part.
Mickie James, Dana Brooke, & Sasha Bank defeated Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax, & Emma when Banks made Emma tap out to the Bank Statement. The match was decent as Alexa Bliss continued to look out for herself after she left her team high and dry down the stretch.
The promo exchange leading up to the six-woman tag team match was fine, but it was nothing to write home about. At least Banks was over with the crowd which added heat to the segment.
Corey Graves’s interview with Bayley covered a lot of ground as Bayley was honest about why she didn’t get extreme during her Kendo Stick on a Pole match against Alexa Bliss at Extreme Rules. Bayley vowed to stay true to herself in order to walk into next year’s WrestleMania as the Raw Women’s Champion.
The Hugger Extraordinaire spoke with humility and confidence which helped repair some of the damage done to her character over the past few weeks. Hopefully is this the start of Bayley’s redemption arc because she has a lot to offer as a performer if she isn’t booked like shit.
Corey Graves saying that he needed a cigarette after hugging Bayley was awesome. I’m surprised they didn’t break character because Graves’ deadpan delivery had me rolling.
Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated The Miz and The Mysterious Dancing Bear when Dean Ambrose did a switcheroo with the bear after Miz’s paranoia got the best of him once again. The distraction caused Miz to knock Maryse off the ring apron which allowed Ambrose to nail him with Dirty Deeds. Ambrose dragged Slater on top of Miz to pick up the win for his team.
The match as pure comedy as the announcers traded bear jokes that were so corny that I couldn’t even crack a smile at how dumb they were. Ambrose continues to make Miz look like chump which is entertaining, but it’s not making me long for their feud to continue.
Neville vs. Rich Swann never got underway as Neville attacked Swann from behind. He slammed Swann into the barricade before putting him in the Rings of Saturn. Neville took pleasure in destroying Austin Aries, TJP, and Swann and blew off Akira Tozawa as a viable challenger for his Cruiserweight Championship. It appears that Titus O’Neil is trying to push his new client on Twitter, but he might be doing more harm than good by kicking the hornet’s nest. At least there’s a storyline reason as to why O’Neil is stirring up trouble on 205 Live.
Big Cass was attacked backstage by a mystery assailant, but he still tagged with Enzo Amore as they took on Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Cass tried to compete, but Enzo had to do the heavy lifting for his team. It wasn’t enough as Anderson and Gallows laid him out with The Magic Killer for the win.
Anderson and Gallows continued to attack Enzo until The Big Show made the save. Cass didn’t look happy as Enzo embraced Big Show in the ring. Cass remains my top suspect in the backstage attacks.
Big Show calling Big Cass S-A-W-F-T pretty much says it all.
The 2-out-of-3 falls match featuring The Hardy Boyz vs. Sheamus and Cesaro for the Raw Tag Team Championship ended in a tie when both teams didn’t make it back in the ring before the count of ten during the deciding fall. This was a smart way to prolong the feud while keeping both teams strong heading into the July PPV That Shall Remain Nameless Unless Absolutely Necessary.
This was a very good main event match that featured hard-hitting action throughout. Both teams work well together which makes their feud still feel fresh despite the multiple rematches. I can’t knock the monotony if the wrestling is up to par. Let’s hope they can keep the momentum going heading into The Fire with Great Balls.
Overall, I thought this was a serviceable episode of Monday Night Raw. It was clear from the start that WWE wanted to get their best stuff out of the way before Game 5 of the NBA Finals featuring the Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers tipped off at 9:00 p.m. Brock Lesnar and Samoa Joe took care of business with their pull-apart brawl while the show was bookended by The Hardy Boyz vs. Cesaro and Sheamus in a 2-out-3 falls match for the Raw Tag Team Titles.
The rest of the show was filled with a lot of fluff, but there was an interesting development in the form of a Roman Reigns video package. Michael Cole announced that Reigns would reveal his plans for SummerSlam on next week’s show. It appears that Reigns won’t be a part of the Raw exclusive PPV next month and will focus on the biggest party of the summer instead. His promo will be newsworthy, to say the least.
Finn Bálor was also kept tonight’s show, but he was given the video package treatment as well. Bálor not having a viable feud at the moment sucks, but I don’t want him on television unless he has a clear purpose. The creative team better live up to their name because Bálor is too talented to be sitting on the sidelines without anything meaningful to do.
Raw should be locked in for the rest of the summer because they no longer face competition from the NBA Playoffs. The television real estate is light on content and it’s important that WWE strikes while the iron is hot. If not, let the summertime sadness commence.

Claire is touched unimaginably by Jamie’s romantic gesture, and whilst he is away getting breakfast, she showers waiting for his return. However, when the phone rings, she is shaken from her reminiscing.

Claire’s heart skipped a beat as she stared at the kitchen bench where Jamie had left the note. With trembling fingers, she picked up the rose, lying on top of the sheet of folded paper, closed her eyes and placed it to her nose. A single red rose promised lifelong devotion and love, but he had given her so many roses for Valentine’s Day that her apartment was beginning to look like a florist shop. Jamie had declared his feelings of adoration, passion and desire for her in no uncertain terms, for the bright, red coloured flowers symbolizing love were everywhere.
He was such a romantic man and his display of enduring love on this special day told her everything she always knew to be true of him. Jamie was hers and was head over heels in love with her. Closing her eyes, Claire inhaled the fragrant scent of the rose’s fragile petals then trailed them over her lips as if it were Jamie’s lips placing a chaste kiss to her mouth. She smiled. She was ecstatically happy.
Finally opening her eyes, she focused on the piece of note paper on the bench with the rose. Reaching down, she picked up the note unfolded the paper and read what he had penned.
My darling Claire,
The view from your window last night was beautiful but nowhere near as beautiful as the vision lying next to me this morning. It was so hard to leave my love, but I’ll be back … I’ve gone to get us some breakfast … I love you.

Claire clutched the note to her heart mindless of the tears that flowed down her cheeks. In those few words, she read all of his longing and his undeniable love for her. She couldn’t wait until Jamie’s return to see him … to look into his eyes and tell him she felt the same. Claire recognised that phrase Jamie had quoted from E.E. Cummings, one of her favourite poets, and those particular words really touched her for they made her heart burst with love for this most special man. That phrase held so much meaning; this is how she felt whenever Jamie was away from her. She had given him her heart for safe keeping, knowing that he carried it with him until he returned and now that he was here, she was content and whole again.
Through her tears she grinned. Jamie would be back soon for he probably went to the local patisserie to pick up some goodies for their breakfast. With hands that shook, she smoothed out the note and re-folded it gently, placing it back on the bench. Then covertly eying the present he had left for her, Claire reached for the box with tentative fingers. Ever so slowly she untied the ribbon. Her heart was palpitating in excitement to see what Jamie had bought her for Valentine’s Day, not that she really wanted a gift for she had all that she ever wanted already. Jamie was back home for however long that might be, and he was back in her arms. She was more than content, but nevertheless she was extremely excited to see what he had got for her and very carefully lifted the lid of the jeweller’s box.
Claire gasped in wonder when she saw what was in it. On soft velvet lay the most exquisite diamond shaped locket necklace that she had ever seen. It was made of pure gold, embedded with heart-shaped diamonds in the centre. Claire gasped at the simple, classic beauty of his gift. It was lovely, and obviously very expensive and her heart trembled with the thought that Jamie had taken the time to choose and purchase it for her. Overcome with emotion, tears suddenly welled in her eyes once more with profound love for her man.
A secretive little smile suddenly bowed Claire’s mouth as she thought about how she could show her thanks for such lovely gifts. It would have to be extra special … but what? Perhaps she would be able think up something wonderful for Jamie whilst she was showering. The soothing water always seemed to help her think more lucidly, so with that thought in her mind and a skip in her step, Claire headed for the shower.

The sound of water running echoed throughout the still apartment as steam quickly filled the bathroom. Standing under the warm spray of the shower, Claire angled her head back against the cool tiles as she let the water cascade over her skin like a soothing balm to her weary body.
She was lost in her thoughts not only of how she could show her thanks, but also what had transpired last night. Pictures of Jamie running his hands softly over her skin and a gamut of other wonderful things danced in her head. Thoughts of his tongue licking soft, arousing trails across and down her neck and around her earlobes caused a moaning sigh to escape from her lips. Memories of Jamie’s tactile stroking and erotic lovemaking were making her temperature rise and her heart palpitate. Claire was on a high with happiness, for although Jamie wasn’t here, he’d said he was coming back and that he loved her.
Closing her eyes, she felt the warm water trickle sensually down her body. Rivulets cascaded gently between her breasts, across her stomach, into her groin and down her legs as if it was the touch of his hands. Her knees felt weak, and she began to buckle with the memory of his onslaught. Breathing deeply Claire inhaled some much needed oxygen or else she thought she would expire under the hot water. At that moment her thoughts suddenly took on a life of their own. Her pupils dilated in the passion of remembrance, while blood began pounding in her veins. She remembered everything that had happened last night and her body was certainly testament to what had taken place in the kitchen.
One thing, among many others that Jamie was always most successful at, was knocking her off-balance. He made her heart race and her knees buckle and whether he did it intentionally or not, he literally took her breath away.
Their subsequent lovemaking when he had placed her on the bed had been euphoric. Burning blue eyes had pierced her soul. Capturing her gaze attentively, their eyes had locked; connected and held as they both recalled those shared magical moments of passion in the kitchen. Then when they had made love, her nails had raked his back in unrestrained passion. She had bitten the crook of his neck. Jamie had gasped inaudibly but she had only soothed the ache in his skin with her tongue before biting him again in the same place. This had been the turning point for them both. Moving her hair away from her face, he’d leaned down to suckle her lips and ran his teeth over them with light stinging nips, before he had kissed her to the point of no return. She’d groaned. He’d masterfully rolled her until they were spooned together in the bed while his legs had captured hers in need. Jamie’s strong hands had snaked around her to lie across her stomach then he’d cupped her swollen breasts, teasing and playing with her pebbled nipples with wilful intent.
Moaning she’d leaned her body back against his as her hand had encircled Jamie’s head bringing him closer to her mouth. They’d kissed passionately and she’d rubbed her body along his incredibly aroused one with a need for him as intense as it had been in the kitchen. Remembering Jamie aroused and throbbing against her sent her into a downward spiral. They were insatiable for each other. Their hips had rocked against one other as Jamie thrust into her again and again. Strangled cries had emitted from her throat at their heady connection of bodies and souls. Shuddering with shared ecstasy Jamie too had found release as the intense pleasure rendered them speechless.
Standing under the shower spray the water caressed her heated body. Claire’s hands lowered and she gently touched herself intimately between her legs gliding her fingers with ease and knowledge. She threw back her head into the spray of water as ripples of joy sent her into rapture.
She couldn’t wait until he returned.

The sound of a phone ringing echoed throughout the quietness of the apartment. The incessant sound continued until finally registering in her brain, Claire turned off the water and climbed out of the shower stall. Droplets of water beaded down her nude body and glistened in the morning light. Reaching for a towel, she wrapped it around herself and padded back into the bedroom. Claire hurriedly picked up the receiver before it went to voice mail.
“Hello,” she answered breathlessly thinking it was Jamie.
“Sorry … did I get you out of bed?” Came the reply from the other end.
“Oh, Hi Geillis … No, I was in the shower.”
“Alone?”
“Yes … alone.”
“Oh …” she added sadly.
“What do you want Geillis, I’m dripping all over the floor here you know?”
“Did you have a good Valentine’s night?”
“Is that why you rang so early in the morning?”
Geillis’s laugher echoed down the receiver. “It must have been good … It’s not early Claire … it’s late morning.”
“Really?”
“Yeah! … So? … Did ya?” On hearing no answer Geillis continued, “I just wanted to see how things turned out between you and your Jamie.”
Claire just smiled coyly into the receiver at her neighbour’s questions. “Who?”
“Hell-o? … Last night? … Jamie? Hunky Jamie? Hmm … I see I don’t need to ask again … it’s probably written all over your face. Must have been good.”
Claire laughed. “Yes … It was.”
“Come on Claire … spill the beans? … Did he, or didn't he?”
“Did he or didn’t he what? What are you talking about Geillis?”
“I think you know,” she laughed. “I saw the looks he was giving you … that’s why I split and left you two lovebirds alone.”
“I thought you wanted to pretty yourself up for your date with Dougal?”
“I did … but I lied. I knew he wasn't picking me up for much later than when I left your apartment. So … What’s going on with Jamie?”
“Nothing …He’s just a good friend who called by.”
“Yeah sure! … With Valentine Day flowers and all. I wasn’t born yesterday Claire. Well? … Did he spend the night?”
“Did Dougal?” she retorted in mirth.
“Yes … but we only talked.”
Claire baulked at her friend’s answer. She and Jamie hadn't done much talking … far from it. They hadn't done much talking at all but they had made love over and over again. If the truth be known they were both a little “spent” after last night, but she was never going to tell Geillis that.
“What do you think?”
“You already know what I think.”
“Well then … I’ll leave it up to your imagination. You have obviously made your conclusions about Jamie and I.”
“If you say so … so … um … is he still there?”
“No … he’s not here.”
“That’s too bad.” Then after a short pause Geillis asked, “Say… do you still want to play tennis like we planned?” I’ll understand if you don’t.”
“Oh … I’d forgotten about that. But I think I’ll give it a miss.”
“Ahhh … so Jamie isn't there now but he is there. Am I right?” Geillis asked pressing for more information than Claire was willing to give and knowing that she was holding something back from her.
Claire laughed replying, “You sure ask a lot of questions Geillis!”
“I'm just naturally nosy … Jamie seems like a great guy. You two looked so good together. It’s wishful thinking on my behalf. I just want you to be happy like I am.”
“Thanks … but I am happy … Very happy.”
“Yeah … me too. Dougal and I had the best date ever. I think I'm in love with him and I'm not just saying that because it was Valentine’s Day. He’s special. We talked for hours and it’s as if I have known him all my life. I think the love bug has hit me real bad Claire.”
“Just go with it Geillis. What will be will be.”
“I will. He’s worth it.”
Claire almost missed the knock on her door. It was rather short and quiet, but she already knew who was standing outside. “Oh, sorry hon, I gotta go there’s someone at my door.”
“Hunky Jamie?”
She heard the mirth in her friend question but she didn’t respond with an affirmative answer. “Love you girlfriend. Bye.”
The sound of Geillis’s laughter echoed in her ears as Claire dropped her towel and reached for her bathrobe in the closet. She quickly put it on and padded to the door knowing who indeed was on the other side of the door.

It was a bit of a juggling act but he had managed to knock on the door despite having his hands full. Jamie stood on the other side of the door clasping the bouquet of flowers he had bought at the florist next to the patisserie shop. The decadent pastries he had purchased for their continental breakfast were in a box, and he was clutching the other present he had retrieved from his hire car for Claire under his arm and had stood waiting for her to open the door.
He had bought this other present on a whim several months ago never believing that he would buy a book solely devoted to love poems, but he did. At the time he hadn’t thought about Valentine’s Day, but he knew that Claire would love this book of poetry by E.E. Cummings and other poets that he had managed to find at a bookstore near his apartment in New York. He wondered if she had made the connection with Cummings’ quote on the note he had left for her, but he already knew she would, for that particular poem was one of her favourites.
Jamie smiled as he remembered how he had managed to find this anthology of poems for subconsciously he must have been thinking of Valentine’s Day when he had purchased it. He could remember vividly, as if it was only yesterday, how the purchase had come about.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
He was on his way home from a quite gruelling day in court and decided he couldn’t face another brief reading tonight and decided to check out the new bookstore near his home in the hope of finding something light to read instead. However, when he had stepped inside the shop, he was surprised to see that the store was not what he thought it to be. There was a particular musty smell as he entered through the door, and what he thought was a new bookstore selling the latest novels and interest themed books turned out to be more. There were bookcases stacked from one side of the room to the other with new releases and other fiction and nonfiction books but what surprised him was that there was a section set aside for old books … lots of old books. The shop was eclectic and just the sort of shop he loved to browse in. There was a mixture of the two with rows of vintage books juxtaposed with the newer hard and soft cover books.
Obviously, the sound of the bell ringing as he had entered the premises had alerted the owner of the shop. A bespeckled elderly woman with a kind face came over towards him with a smile and greeted him.
“Well. Hello there young man. Can I help you with a selection of books? We have a wide variety … some old, some new. Are you looking for something in particular? She had asked.
It was as if something or someone was whispering in his ear. “Do you have poetry books?” He heard himself asking.
“Ah, you’re a man after my own heart,” she replied with unreserved joy. “Poetry is my favourite, too. Come with me.”
The woman had led him to the back of the store and pointed to several bookcases. “I have several in that bookcase. Feel free to browse and if you need any further assistance I will be in the front of the store.”
Thanking her, he had moved closer to the bookcase where there were at least a hundred books stacked neatly on the shelves. He ran his finger along a row as he perused the titles and contents. Most of the renowned masters were there, Percy Bysshe Shelly, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 6th Lord Byron, John Keats and even poems by his favourite Scottish poet Robert Burns. He took out one book and glanced through the poems reciting in his head the words to “My Heart’s in the Highlands.” However, this poem made him feel melancholy for that was where his Claire was and he’d placed the book back on the shelf.
Suddenly his eyes spotted another book, a collection of several poets’ works. He eased the book from the shelf and examined its cover. The words "Love Poem Collection: The Greatest Love Poems of All Time” were inscribed on the cover. Suddenly, a wave of longing so great had washed over him at the vision of a certain person with a pair of blue eyes, a gorgeous smile and kissable lips suddenly manifested itself. Although the Robert Burns’ book was nostalgic with thoughts of home, the title of this poetry book hit him in the gut. He saw that smile and heard that voice in his dreams all the time. It was then that he decided to purchase the book to send to Claire in the post. It was the perfect gift. He never did post it though. He must have known he would give it to her in person, but at the time he never knew that he would have time off to enable him to return for Valentine’s Day and now he was eager to give it to her.
Jamie blinked as the memory of that day faded. Giving Claire this added Valentine gift was romantic and he knew that she would love it. He just wanted to see her happy. He didn’t need any gift for himself, for he’d been rewarded tenfold with their reunion last night. It had certainly been the confirmation that the decision he had already arrived at was the right one.
He smiled knowing that the pendant he’d given Claire would have thrilled her, he now couldn’t wait to see the look in her eyes when he gave her the special book of poetry.

Special Mercy for the OverwhelmedSeptember 20, 2019
To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
— 2 Timothy 1:2
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by what you were facing in life? I’m sure the answer to that question is yes. And certainly you know that you are not the only person who has faced what felt like insurmountable odds. There have been millions before you who felt the same, but with God’s help, they survived, tackled the odds, and even came out on top.
Tough times come to everyone at some point, but the storm eventually passes for those who are determined to navigate it God’s way. And to help His people “get to the other side” safely, God provides special mercy for the overwhelmed. That’s I want to show you in Scripture today.
The apostle Paul wrote the epistle we call Second Timothy at a time when his young son in the faith was facing insurmountable odds. Nero was ruling as emperor; believers were being persecuted for their faith; many people were deserting the Lord; and others were defecting from the Church. At the moment that Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, Timothy was serving as pastor in Ephesus — a major city in Asia where persecution was raging. Surviving every day was a challenge for believers in that region, and Christian leaders, of course, especially felt the brunt of it. By reading the words of Second Timothy, it is clear that Paul was trying to comfort the overwhelmed heart of this young Christian leader and provide him with some spiritual help and strength.

In the opening lines of that letter, Paul wrote, “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord” (2 Timothy 1:1,2).
When Paul wrote a letter, he normally used a greeting that included the words grace and peace. Paul deviated from that greeting only three times out of all his 13 New Testament letters. The first instance was in First Timothy; the second was in his epistle to Titus; and the third was here in Second Timothy 1:2. In all three of these instances, Paul was writing to someone who felt overwhelmed by their situation. In each of those instances, Paul added the word mercy to his greetings. He told them, “Grace and mercy and peace be unto you.”
When Paul penned his first epistle to Timothy, the younger minister had just assumed the leading role in the rapidly growing church of Ephesus, and he felt overwhelmed by his new responsibilities. Because of the awesome task at hand, Timothy needed to be reminded that God’s mercy was available to help him in his situation. So when Paul wrote to Timothy the first time, he added the word “mercy” to his salutation.
When Paul wrote to Titus, he had just left Titus on the island of Crete to establish a church among the island’s unruly inhabitants. The people of Crete had such bad reputations that Paul even quoted one of their prophets as saying, “The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.” Amazingly, Paul agreed with this assessment, asserting, “This witness is true…” (Titus 1:12,13). It would have been very difficult for Titus to lead a congregation among people like that! Titus surely felt overwhelmed by his assignment. He needed to know that a special measure of mercy was available to him for his difficult task. So when Paul wrote to him, he added the word “mercy” to his salutation.
When Paul wrote Second Timothy, Timothy was once again feeling overwhelmed — not because of a large, growing church, as had been in the case in Paul’s first letter to him, but because his congregation was in decline, people were suffering persecution, and a spirit of fear was trying to attach itself to him (see 2 Timothy 1:7). So when Paul wrote to him, he again altered his salutation to include the word mercy. Right from the start of his letter, he wanted to remind Timothy that God’s mercy was available to the overwhelmed, so Paul wrote, “Grace, mercy, and peace.”
Isn’t it good to know that when God calls you to do something difficult — something that threatens to overwhelm you or make you feel inadequate — He inserts extra mercy between the grace and the peace? There is a special measure of mercy to those who feel overwhelmed by their trials in life. This was especially good news for young Timothy, and it’s good news for you too!
When God’s mercy works in your life, it may manifest as a renewed sense of courage and inner toughness to make it to the next day. That may not seem very spectacular — but think how much more difficult it would be if you didn’t have that special touch of mercy!
It would be good for you to reflect on the ways you’ve already experienced God’s special mercy during difficult times in your life or in the lives of others. When you bring to your remembrance those times His mercy was demonstrated in your life right at the moment it was needed, it fortifies your expectation to receive a manifestation of God’s mercy in the midst of your present challenge as well.
If you feel overwhelmed by what you are facing in life, I want to assure you that God is well aware of it and He has not abandoned you. Whether the issue is financial, relational, work-related, health-related — whatever may be the root cause of what you are facing, you can be assured of this: God has special mercy that He is ready to make available to help you through this difficult time. Thank God for His grace and peace — but if you are feeling overwhelmed, receive by faith His special mercy to help you make it through victoriously to the other side!

Father, I am so grateful that when You call me to do something difficult and it tempts me to feel inadequate, You insert extra mercy between the grace and the peace in my life. Holy Spirit, I receive a special measure of mercy to undergird me in the times when I feel overwhelmed by the trials of life.
I pray this in Jesus’ name!

I confess that when my heart is overwhelmed, I go to the Rock of my salvation to partake of His mercies that are new for me every morning. I confess that His mercy is at work in my life right now. Today I walk with a renewed sense of courage, persistence, and inner toughness because God’s all-sufficient grace, mercy, and peace are being multiplied to me.
I declare this by faith in Jesus’ name!
