What finally pushes Grian to leave the watchers? Does he ever reconnect with his adopted mom?
Resentment builds over time.
This isn’t what he wanted. The loss of autonomy, the social and emotional regression. He knows he’s not on equal footing, he knows most of them see him as a pet, they just want to see him perform. He feels lied to, used.
He’s on slightly positive/neutral feelings with his Watcher, but even then he gets overwhelmed, even then he can’t be confident what her true feelings or intentions are.
Turning into a Watcher is also scary. It hurts, he thought he was honestly going to die when his wings grew out. So when his hands occasionally cramp, he’s scared! He looks and takes note of other Watcher’s anatomy, how tall they are, the eyes, the feathers, talons, he just sees torture, and for what? What did he honestly expect from this?
Grian joined the Watchers because he wanted more from his life, the updates were just too promising…. He wanted to build better, bigger, the desire to know more, it’s a selfish reason and he doesn’t know how he’ll ever look his friends in the eyes again. If he does.
The isolation is also maddening, he doesn’t have anyone but the watchers, he can’t go anywhere without one, he can’t talk to anyone, no one actually acknowledges him.
I don’t even know what the final straw could be, you can only stay frustrated for so long, so sick to your stomach for so long. A particularly bad migraine can be enough of a reminder that eyes are going to grow out of his face if he stays.
It ends with tnt and a complete meltdown.
He knows how to fly, he knows how to open portals, he bought his time. If he sees her before he leaves, they say nothing, the eyes say enough for both of them.
Right now I don’t see him ever reconnecting with Her. But he does think about her, when he tells Mumbo about everything he almost refers to her as his mom, he knows that’s what their dynamic was, that’s what she saw, but he doesn’t want to say it out loud.

___
“just-” grian hesitated, “taurtis,” he whispered.
“yeah?” he turned his head, slipping down his headphones to hear grian clearer, “what’s up?”
grian shifted his weight, the couch creaking and groaning with the movement. his face was flushed red, angled away from taurtis. his fingers twisted the fabric of his hoodie nervously, one hand wrapped around his knee as he curled up around himself.
“i- um,” he licked his chapped lips nervously, “taurtis i really-” he cut himself off.
“hey, you good?” taurtis leaned over, eyebrows furrowing as he placed a hand on grian’s shoulder, wincing at the way grian flinched.
grian lifted his head, staring at taurtis with wide eyes as he blushed more. “uh, i’ve just- we’ve been friends for a really long time and i was-” his eyes flicked away from taurtis, as he slowly put his hand over taurtis’s. his expression was pinched, almost ashamed.
“i was wondering if you wanted to like,” he shrugged off taurtis’s hand, breathing unsteadily, “i don’t know, go out sometime?” he whispered, almost praying taurtis wouldn’t hear him.
“oh,” taurtis blinked, fingers twitching. his eyes widened, “oh,” he whispered.
grian shifted, picking at the hem of his sweater.
“oh, oh my- yes, yes!” he nodded excitedly, “of course, of course, dude!”
“oh,” grian blinked dumly, hand pausing as he swallowed thickly,, “well alright-, then we should probably figure out a-”
his words were cut off as taurtis grabbed his face gently, very slowly leaning closer. grian’s eyes widened, he could lean back, push taurtis back, it’s not like it would be difficult.
he didn’t, though. it was just a- curiosity as to what would happen, that’s- he isn’t-
their lips connected, and for a split second, it was like they were the only ones that existed. the world felt just a little bit smaller, confined to the small space of their living room. as if expectations didn’t matter, grades- parents- teachers.
the world was them and only them, for a split second.
taurtis pulled back, both breathing heavily. grian blinked repeatedly, placing a hand over his hammering heart.
mutely, he grabbed taurtis’s hand and intertwined them, shifting himself under the crook of taurtis’ neck. taurtis wrapped an arm around him, pulling him closer.
“we aren’t telling sam, are we?” he asked, eyes fluttering closed.
“mm,” taurtis hummed with indecision, absentmindedly tracing nonsensical patterns into grian’s hoodie, “nope.”
grian snickered despite himself, “good,” he whispered, nodding, “good.”
“we should- i don’t know, go to a walmart parking lot as our first date,” he suggested, smiling as grian smacked his shoulder playfully.
“a walmart parking lot?” he asked incredulously, laughter mixing into his voice, “i swear- if that’s really our first date- i’m not sure what i’ll do but it’ll be shi- awful. it’ll be the worst thing ever.”
“what? breaking up with me?” he rolled his eyes, “okay, fine, mister rich boy, what do you suggest then?”
grian smiled, squeezing taurtis’ hand. “i don’t know- somewhere better then walmart, i’m not sure, maybe we’ll like- fly out somewhere, that could be cool.”
taurtis giggled, “mm, that seems a bit pricy for a first date of all things.”
“oh, oh you’re right. we should definitely dumpster dive.”
“exactly, you get me.”
grian laughed.
