what grinds my gears like nothing else is textiles manufacturers greenwashing bamboo/rayon yarn or fabric as though the fact that it's derived from plant material erases the enormously toxic manufacturing process. like the first thing you think of when you think of bamboo yarn/fabric is 'oh it must be made like any other plant fiber' but no!!! that's a semisynthetic fiber that's usually made with carbon disulfide which is extremely toxic to workers and environment both!
and there ARE less destructive bamboo processing techniques you CAN make bamboo fiber the same way you do any other bast fiber theres EVEN a less common chemical process that doesnt do the same harm that viscose rayon does but NO instead we get ~natural fiber~ greenwashing that hides behind the extremely reasonable assumptions people make about plant fibers
I will never ever in my life begrudge people who buy bamboo yarn or for that matter acrylic because (a) goddamn its fucking rough out here (b) I'd be a massive hypocrite (c) the problem is the manufacturers not the individual and (d) sometimes it IS the yarn for the job but I will never stop beating my drum about this bc we! deserve! to know!

20 DIFFERENT TYPES OF FABRIC AND THEIR USES
Whether you are making new clothes or trying to figure out how to clean clothes, understanding the right fabric piece is always essential. This is beneficial when you have a nice piece of fabric and you want it to stay for a long period of time. The trends and preferences of people regarding clothing and fashion are continuously changing, and hence the fabric industry is coming up with various new kinds of designs and stitching. There are different kinds of fabrics available that you can choose as per your comfort and choice. If you are asked how many fabrics are available on the market, then you will hardly count 12 or 14 types of fabrics. Isn’t it? But, if I say that there are more than 200 types of fabrics available worldwide. What would be your reaction? Different types of fabrics are used for different purposes; some of them are old while some are newly invented. It's been a while since I've posted any books - I really need to learn how to take better pictures - but now that it's February again, that means Binderary! And this year my slate isn't entirely gifts for other people, so I can share pictures.
So here are my first three books of the month.
Pamphlet binds: Noble (includes the sequel Arrangement) and The Road Not Taken (includes What Might Have Been). Both my own AnS fanfic.
Tumblr media
My excitement with these is the fact I managed to get the adhesive vinyl titles on without tearing up the covers. I've learned new skills since a year ago!
Book 3 is my first case bind of the month - a new bindery log. I keep a record of every book I make, with measurements and materials and notes.
Tumblr media
The fabric is Skarabaus Duo, bought as part of a crazy group buy last year. This color-shifting bookcloth was discontinued by the manufacturer, and we bought a really impressive amount of what was left. I love this color in particular - it's purple from certain angles.
The paper is paste paper I made myself with acrylic paint and starch paste and a little comb made out of cardboard. It's a ridiculous amount of fun, and I have a few more bits of it I'll be using later in the month.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The endpapers are scrapbooking card stock, and the endbands are made from bookcloth scraps folded over twine.
I'm starting my third year as a bookbinder and I love this art more and more all the time.

2023 Ariel Restyles
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These girls took me nearly three months to finish lol What started as a very simple attempt to redress my 2023 Ariel dolls in nicer outfits turned into an annoyingly expensive 3-month project in which I purchased multiple Ariel dolls, outfits, accessories and tons of sequins and pearls and repainting supplies in order to construct what I imagine a set of 2023 Ariel dolls would look like if they had the same budget, design team and quality of early-mid 2000's Mattel Disney dolls lol Literally so much fucking text below the cut because I couldn't help but explain every minute aspect of my decision making for these dolls like anyone cares!!!!
Mermaid Ariel is wearing a lot of different pieces combined together; my desire for this set was for them to look and feel like they had been manufactured and released by Mattel, so I pulled a lot of elements shared between various mermaid Ariel dolls that they've made over the years and combined them to look like a natural continuation of what they had been doing prior to 2016! Her tail comes from the 2008 Ariel and Friends gift set but has been given a few extra details that were heavily inspired by Forever Hair Ariel from 2004, the bra is from a hasbro Ariel but was altered to fit the Mattel body (and once again has details added to match the tail), and the starfish clip is from the 1997 Ariel and baby Sandy set with the addition of some extra shell sequins in a slight homage to the 2003 Charming Princess Ariel doll's hairpiece. The purse is from the 2023 Getting Ready Ariel doll but has been painted purple to match the rest of her outfit; this piece took the longest because I had to spray it with a base (Mr Hobby Base in White) in order for the acrylic paint to adhere which is something I have NEVER done before and felt incredibly daunting to even attempt (thank you for the help John!!!) but I finally got the courage to try and it worked out perfectly! I was originally dead-set on using real sculpted accessory parts from actual Mattel dolls to construct the embellishments on her outfit because Mattel will rarely use pre-made sequins and buttons for their dolls, but eventually I came to the conclusion that it's not too far out of the realm of possibility and I would be better off creating something that is evocative of factory-made dolls and has the right balance of colors and fabric than it would be to make a less cohesive outfit with a bunch of mismatched sculpted parts that don't look like they were made by the same person. If she were an actual release by Mattel, I think she'd either just be called Deluxe Mermaid Ariel or maybe Magic Pearls Ariel if she were a gimmick doll (perhaps with a color change gimmick on the pearls, hairclip and purse?) lol Some photos of the Ariel dolls that inspired me (Forever Hair obviously being the biggest inspo):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pink Dress Ariel is a lot simpler but actually took the most work and took me the furthest out of my comfort zone when it comes to skill; her dress comes from the 2006 Glitter Princess Ariel doll but has been heavily embellished to look more 'deluxe playline', the peplum was gathered for a little more volume at the waist, pearls added to the waist, hem and collar and the darts on the front of her bodice were tightened to fit the bust on 2023 body more. Pink Dress went through the most trial and error because I couldn't figure out what to use for her tiara or the embellishments on her dress, but I eventually settled on sequins and pearls to match the Mermaid doll because I felt it would give the impression that they were designed as part of the same collection (and it also just looked the best out of everything else lol) Her tiara is from the 2023 Color Splash Ariel doll but was sprayed white and painted over with pearlescent white acrylic paint; I only painted it with one color because Mattel doll tiaras are rarely painted and the original Glitter Princess tiara is also one solid color. Originally I tried using a few Barbie tiaras that already came in the color I needed, but eventually came to the conclusion that she would only look right with an actual 2023 Ariel tiara lol Finally I gave her a choker (a very common design element with Mattel Ariel dolls that I really love) as well as the dinglehopper and shoes from the 2023 Getting Ready Ariel doll! Some photos of the Mattel Ariels that inspired me the most for her design (Glitter Princess is ofc the most obvious inspo):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as a bonus photo of her standing with my original 2006 Glitter Princess Ariel to show how the dress looked before all of my alterations:
Tumblr media
(Glitter Princess didn't originally come with that choker but I had to give her one too lol)
For how deliberately playline-esque and simple these dolls are, it was honestly such a big project to put them together; I learned so many new skills through this project and it was a lot of fun to explore the elements that made the old Mattel Ariel dolls so special in order to combine them in a way that feels authentic, even if it results in a set of dolls that are purposefully lower-impact than a more elaborate custom would be lol

Odd Flower Friend
Mixed media figure made with felt, paper clay, and recycled plastic flower stem. Great gift for someone you feel uncertain of. It will watch them, day and night, without a blink.
Materials we used:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plastic flower stem (scavenged from our dungeon of dross)
Green and wood air dry clay for petals
Polyester batting as base fiber (scavenged from grocery delivery padding)
Soft yellow acrylic / nylon yarn as top fiber (hand unraveled with pet brush)
Glass head sewing pins in green
Wood glue
Tools we used:
Felting needles
Wire cutter
Smooth sculpting stick
Some water in a small bowl
Toothpick
Pet carding brash (only to unravel yarn with)
Notes:
Yarn can be cheaper than roving and provides much more variety in colors and fabric content. We wanted this project to use synthetic fiber only and it is much easier (while tedious) and cheaper to unravel yarn than to scour the earth for non-animal based roving.
Plenty of abandoned plastic flower at thrift stores. Consider salvaging before buying newly manufactured materials whenever possible.
Always pay attention to inorganic trash, and find ways to recontextualize them as materials. e.g. The polyester batting is from grocery deliveries by a company called Renewliner that made wrong claims that their liner is recyclable. But not many places recycle PET in this form, so it practically is polyester fluff that is trash to most households. Ask friends and family around to collect them. They are great as base fiber for needlefelting.
Tumblr media
Cut poly batting into circles.
Stab them to a loose disc shape.
Continue to stab as you bend the disc into a bowl shape.
Marvel at your felted bowl shaped dish base.
Tumblr media
Put a mesh of top fiber on felted base.
Evenly stab top fiber on.
Cut glass pins to length.
Put glass pins at roughly where eyes best be.
Stab in more top fiber where cheeks best be.
Stab in the undercheek area, (sideways) towards chin, to make chin more prominent.
Tumblr media
Roll a little top fiber into a loose ellipsoid and stab it where the top lip best be.
Repeat the same step for the lower lip. Make sure the corner of the mouth sinks into the edge of cheeks. Leave a defined gap in between lips.
Stab the gap in between lips to deepen it.
Stab the area below lower lips to deepen, but not as much as lip gap.
Stab any loose fiber from the back of face back in. Make sure to not stab through the other side and keep the fiber contained within the face.
Tumblr media
Mix a bit of green clay with wood clay for a desaturated natural soft green.
Make a thick round disc.
Cut 7 slits evenly at edge.
Round the corners with wet fingers with small bowl of water.
Bend it to a slight bowl shape like we did with the felted face.
Let dry on a domed surface.
Tumblr media
Poke a hole through the petals with the plastic flower stem tip when the petals are dry to the touch but still moist inside.
Let petal dry completely.
Once dry, take out the petals, use wood glue diluted with water to seal petals. Make sure it is sealed just enough without looking too glossy. Dap finger on glossy parts to make them matte.
Let petal dry completely.
Once dry, put wood glue at the tip of the flower stem (the base of the stem needle). Our cupped shaped head held a good amount of glue.
Insert petals on the flower stem through the hole to desired position.
Let dry again for at least a day.
Once dry, trim off any excess stem needle that would be too long for the face’s thickness with wire cutter.
With a toothpick slowly drill a hole into the back of the face at where the stem needle would be best inserted.
Insert the flower face onto flower stem tip.
Tumblr media
And you have yourself a good enough new flower friend.

nickerbocker doll, fabric faded on his shoulder, just looking for a year
difficult to pinpoint a specific year, but based on this photo i can tell you he was manufactured between 1963 and sometime in the mid 1970s-- before knickerbocker switched to acrylic yarn for the hair.
i might be able to narrow down the timeline a bit if i had a picture of his tag!

Dimasi prefers protein fibres like wool and silk. She says they have a “natural intelligence” that makes them better to wear because they thermoregulate and don’t need to be washed frequently.
These materials used to be more common. In 1975 fabrics derived from fossil fuels like polyester, nylon and acrylic represented just 30% of the global fibre market. In 2021, that figure was 64%. By comparison in 2021, wool represented just 1% of the global fibre market and silk was just under 0.2%, although the total production of most fibres has increased significantly in that time.
“I do get mad when I see very expensive designer pieces made from poly crepe – it’s like they’re taking the piss out of the customer,” says Press. “People might say, ‘Well poly is durable,’ but for me it’s just nasty, sweaty plastic – and the only reason to add it to a garment is to save money.”

Hi! Feel free to ignore if you don't feel like answering. I see you've been posting about selling pokemon merchandise, and I wanted to ask if you maybe have any advice for someone who's also interested in selling merchandise but isn't quite sure where to begin?
Sure, I can give a little bit of advice! Sorry if this is super haphazard, I'm just talking off the top of my head.
Ok tbh the first thing to be aware of is that making merch is expensive. I really do not recommend getting into making and selling merch if you're struggling financially. I don't make a lot of money from this.
If you're interested in learning more about manufacturers/where to get stuff made, there's a list of them on the account @howtobeaconartist under the "resources" tab. They also have a lot of advice for selling merch in general, tho they're mostly geared toward anime convention artists.
There's also vograce, a company based in china that makes a variety of things:
I use them a lot but there's also often communication issues/minor printing complications, and shipping can get quite pricy if you're ordering a lot of things. (for example, shipping on the order of submas pillow cases + misc merch samples was almost $100.) (also I live in the US.) That said, I like to use them because they have low minimum order quantities; I don't sell a ton of merch, so it's convenient for me to be able to buy small quantities of items. They also let you split up orders between multiple designs (again, useful for lowering quantities).
Anyway, my personal recommendation for your first merch would be buttons. I get them made by cheapestbuttonsnet on Etsy:
Their prices are very affordable, and they also let customers split up an order between multiple designs. Typically I order a batch of 50 buttons, and then split it between 5 designs to end up with 10 buttons of each design. Customer service is also very responsive; if you have further questions I'd recommend messaging them on Etsy or sending them an e-mail.
Anyway you don't have to start with buttons, but that's just what I think would be the best balance between affordable for the artist + affordable/attractive for customers.
Also, keep in mind that artwork you draw for merch should be sized at least 300 PPI for prints, charms, buttons, and stickers, and at least 150 PPI for fabric printing (like pillows). This means if you want to print a 1.5 inch button, the canvas you draw on should be at least 450 px by 450 px (because 300 * 1.5 = 450). Typically I draw larger than this anyway (like 2500 px by 2500 px for most things), but note that if you draw larger that some small details may get lost.
There's a bunch of other logistic things you'll need to do before selling merch, including:
setting up an online shop (I use Etsy because they're convenient for shipping and send tax forms at the end of the year to make it easier to report income, but they have a lot of random fees)
Purchasing shipping materials (for buttons/charms, usually just bubble mailers from amazon or wherever are fine)
Setting prices (I reference other sellers on Etsy to gauge a good price for products. Another thing people often do is take the cost of manufacturing one unit, multiplying it by 3, and using that as the price.)
Purchasing business cards to include in orders (optional; I get mine from catprint.com bc I like their holographic finish and I get prints from them anyway, but there are much cheaper options out there for business cards)
Taking product photos/making graphics for products (this goes with "setting up an online shop" tbh. i hate taking product photos LMAO;;;)
Drawing the actual artwork for the merchandise lskdjflsdjf
There's probably more than this and there's more details that I'm not mentioning because this is just a short little intro, but tbh a lot of merch making is about learning along the way and seeing what works and what can be improved on.

Tourist Cabin (Pensacola), 1976
Donna Dennis
Acrylic and enamel on wood and Masonite, glass, metal screen, fabric, incandescent light, sound (summer night, crickets) 6’6” x 4’6” x 6’
My subway stations, tourist cabins, and hotels are painted wooden constructions built around interior spaces that are visible to varying degrees but physically inaccessible. Each work stands taller than a person but is smaller than the object-place it evokes. Because the scale is reduced, the tiles and other architectural details must be painted and drawn and shaped by hand. Thus that which at first appears to be public, impersonal, and manufactured reveals a surface that is intimate, private, and tactile.
