Let’s examine the effect NINA actually had on El
This is branch off of this post I made about El’s superhero/monster dichotomy. tl;dr El’s internal conflict boils down to her belief that she is either a monster or a superhero, she can’t accept herself as being neither.
I feel like it’s a misconception that NINA has resolved El of this internal conflict, that she has now independence and realized that she is neither a hero nor a monster, just herself.
But I beg the question— did she really?
It was actually Brenner, the man of the hour, who gave El the speech about there being no such thing as superheroes and monsters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I feel like this joke has been made before, but it’s just so easy 😂)
Papa is telling El to confront the demons of her past, that she is more complex than she gives herself credit for.
But El does not take this lesson to heart, instead we have this confrontation between here in Papa in 4x08—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do think that El realizing that she isn’t a monster and that she is a victim of her environment is a good thing. El has used violence in the past because it is what she was taught and what she was pushed to do. So, this is at least a step in the right direction.
But the problem is, El has not resolved her core issue, which is her dualistic way of thinking.
El doesn’t take the lesson that there are no heroes and monsters, but rather takes the monster label from herself and sticks it onto Papa. And don’t get me wrong, Papa has done terrible and unforgivable things. But the fact that El continues to have this hero and monster mindset means that there is still a conflict that needs to be resolved going forward.
When El went into NINA, she went in with the mindset that it was going to make her a superhero.
Tumblr media
So El’s personal goal isn’t really to remedy her way of thinking, but actually to become a superhero and and erase this monster label that she has on herself, influenced partially by these visions of the massacre that she keeps recieving. She believed that she killed all those kids herself. After her talk with Papa it seems like she’s going to confront these demons head on, but what NINA actually ends up telling her is that she didn’t kill all of those kids and that she was the one who actually punished the killer by unlocking a new power and sending him to a different dimension.
Papa tries to tell her that she was the one who released him from his prison, but El combats by saying that Papa’s actions are what pushed One to do so in the first place. Now El is correct in her assessment of Papa’s abuse and the effect it had on both her and One, but again this isn’t El facing her inner conflict and rather deflecting it.
And the one who calls her out on this is another antagonist—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So El went into her fight with Vecna thinking she can win, because she is the superhero and she’s done it before and thinks she can do it again (See: “If you touch her again, I will kill you again”) and when she loses she blames herself, which Byler calls out—
Tumblr media
El isn’t able to see her successes, the small sliver of hope she was able to offer in the darkness because she is too caught up in her way of thinking. But another thing is, El doesn’t really have something to fall back on— this is all she knows. She was raised to use violence and be a weapon, and she can either use that to be a monster, or use it to be a hero. If she can’t be the hero or the monster, then who is she?

One of the interesting things about being medicated for ADHD for the first time after forty is the ongoing adjustment of coping mechanisms. The thing about medication is that it doesn’t render them unnecessary, it just takes a ton less energy to engage in them, and sometimes it means developing different ones.
I’ve used Google Tasks for probably about a decade now. Generally it’s just a list of the “big things” to do -- “do the dishes” “take out trash” “weekly donor screening” et cetera. I realize dishes and trash don’t seem like big things, and truthfully they aren’t, but they are “macro” in the sense that they are not detailed.
But now that I have more executive function, I can accomplish all of, say, taking out the trash, so I can no longer simply write “take out trash”. That will tell me to take out the kitchen trash, which is admittedly 90% of all the garbage I generate and the most important thing to actually accomplish. But I want to take out the kitchen trash, check the paper bin in the living room to see if it needs emptying, add the litterbox bag to the kitchen trash, see if the bathroom trash is full, and recycle the pile of boxes that I left by the door to remind me to recycle them and now they just live there. All of which I can do, thank you Adderall, but none of which I’m going to remember to do because I’m so focused on “taking out the trash”.
So now my google tasks is like “TRASH” and then on separate lines are kitchen, paper, bathroom, litter, boxes. And after every single action I do, like taking the bag physically out of the trash can, I check the list. Or I have DISHES which used to be enough because I really could only manage to do one thing -- put all the dishes in the sink, rinse the dishes in the sink and put them in the dishwasher, run the dishwasher, or empty the dishwasher. Now I can do it all! If I can remember to do it all. Which I can’t when I’m doing part one of any of them. So before I do any of them I list all of them in the Tasks.
The bananas of the detailed lists I make these days is surpassed only by the insanity of how short the lists end up at the end of the day, so it’s worth it. I have one list for “during the week” that is mostly work stuff, and one list for “weekend” that is usually personal stuff or optional stuff, and at the end of this week there were three items on my work list. The last time I had only three items on my work list was when I was creating that list a decade ago.
Meanwhile I have already checked eight things off the weekend list before noon, but primarily because it had items like “put a bandaid on your right foot” “take a shower”  “Go to the second floor of Target first”  “get a glass of water before sitting down”.
Doing November cleaning should be fascinating this year.

#deni's art#deni's stuff#oc art#oc tag#horizon oc#horizon au#oc: dailah#dailah x talanah#oc x canon#talanah khane padish#i just got thinking about how dailah must feel about the hunters' lodge. bc of a future post-timeskip fic i started writing#where - this is after the whole cyborg fross thing happens - she warns fross he can't be seen by the hunters' lodge ppl#because instead of seeing and appreciating the technological prowess behind such a monumental scientific achievement#they'll instead see a new cool machine to shoot and kill to prove their hunting skills - and perhaps become sunhawk#(i don't know exactly how he would rank respective to other machines but i do believe he would be harder to kill than most)#and her dialogue just seemed so... resigned. to the idea that machine hunters might try to target her life's work. her crown jewel#for what she sees as a quick buck and a little praise and perhaps an authority title#so of course i started wondering how far back this opinion goes and how her opinion on the lodge has changed over time#because of course she has respect for her brother who gave his life in the massacre#and i'm sure she understands it matters when they're protecting civilians against the machines#but that's not gonna be relevant anymore once GAIA is repaired and all the machines are peaceful again is it?#it's just gonna be a pure show of raw strength again. and then.... i wanna hear her thoughts on it then#because she's always had that fascination with old world tech. i'm sure she feels it's a waste to kill machines and use them as trophies#instead of studying them and learning from them#but then i remembered the fic i wrote about her having a crush on talanah#so instead of writing a smart and nuanced character analysis about it i did the sensible thing and made this meme 👍#hope it gets the idea across!

as of the time this post goes up, rooster teeth's extra life stream will start in three days on the 12th (holy shit, already?!) at 10 am central time. given [gestures vaguely] everything that's come to light about rooster teeth in the past, a lot of people will understandably not want to watch the stream this year, or every year they do it in the future going forward.
if you're someone who donates money to extra life through rt and/or buys the limited-time merch, it's good to know that if you want to, you can instead just donate directly to children's miracle network hospitals without associating your donation with any specific individual or group, rooster teeth included.
if you do want to donate to extra life through a participant that isn't rt, the extra life website also has a search index, so if you have at least one person/small group/company/whoever in mind you'd rather donate to, you can just look them up there!
and of course, donating to your local hospital or charity at any time of year is 100% another valid way to donate your money. rules and requirements for donations vary between organizations, so before doing anything else, do some research and check for verified and reputable locations, both online and in real life :)

It cannot be overstated just how earth-shattering Alito’s leaked Supreme Court opinion is - not simply for its dismantling of womens’ bodily autonomy (though that in itself is egregious enough) but also for how it goes about overturning the foundational precedent Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey are built on: the right to privacy and the due process clauses as outlined in the 14th Amendment.
Roe and Casey work on the precedent that the “privacy” of the 14th Amendment can be applied to a woman’s personal medical decisions. This is what’s called an “unenumerated right,” or a right that is implied to exist based off of what other laws say. For instance, the right to a public defender isn’t stated in the constitution at all, but was implied to exist because of a Supreme Court decision in 1963. Alito’s opinion however, asserts that a right must “must be deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition.”
The fuck does that mean?
Y’see, as an Originalist (like Amy Coney Barrett), Alito is concerned with the original public meaning of a law at the time it was written.
To an Originalist, since the 14th Amendment was drafted in 1868 - a time when most states criminalized abortion - to apply a “modern” interpretation of privacy to abortion like Roe did twists the 14th Amendment beyond what the drafters would have ever intended or even considered, which to Alito and other Originalists like him is Constitutional anathema.
So why is this legalese important?
Simple: while Alito insists that Roe v. Wade is a special case because abortion is a unique issue, that doesn’t change the fact that his Originalist interpretation of the 14 Amendment will topple that privacy precedent, setting a brand new legal precedent that can be applied to a huge number cases that were also decided on the 14th’s Privacy and Due Process clauses. Rights that may also lack the “history and tradition” that Alito so treasures.
What other unenumerated rights does this endanger? To name a few:
Interracial marriage (Loving v. Virginia)
The right to a public defender (Gideon v. Wainwright)
“Miranda Rights,” or a person’s legal rights being read to them by police during arrest (Miranda v. Arizona)
The right to buy and use contraceptives (Griswold v. Connecticut)
The illegality of sodomy laws (Lawrence v. Texas)
Same-sex marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges)
Overruling Roe and Casey isn’t solely a horrible miscarriage of justice for women’s reproductive rights. If the legal logic of Alito’s draft carries into the Court’s final decision, then the legal precedence that toppled it will be legitimized and could theoretically be applied to...well. Pretty much all modern civil rights.
Now, Alito assures us that Roe is a special case and that other decisions such as interracial marriage (Loving) or contraception (Griswold) are in no danger of being overturned. They are decided law, so we have nothing to worry about.
Except...that’s exactly what a few recent Supreme Court nominees said about Roe, as well.

I'm forever annoyed that I didn't guess the twist of S4 with the 4 gates combining into 1 mega gate. There were four trailers. Four posters. Four groups. Four victims. Four clock chimes. Four seasons. And the shot of the spiders crawling out of the clock with a crack coming from each corner.
Tumblr media
They foreshadowed it so well; everything was counting down to something in fours. And I will always kick myself for not realising what that was!
