Bears fire coach John Fox after 5-11 season
LAKE FOREST, Ill/January 01, 2018(AP)(STL.News)– The Chicago Bears fired John Fox on Monday after a 5-11 season, ending one of the least successful coaching stints in team history.
The Bears announced the dismissal one day after a loss at NFC North champion Minnesota.
“Today is the tough part of our results-oriented business,” Fox said in a statement.
Chicago has had four consecutive losing seasons — each with 10 or more losses. The Bears haven’t finished above .500 since they let Lovie Smith go following a 10-6 finish in 2012. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2010.
Fox’s conservative approach and some questionable decisions during games were sore spots this season. He went 14-34 in his three years with Chicago, a .292 winning percentage. The only worse showing by a Bears coach was by Abe Gibron — 11-30-1 (.274) from 1972-74.
Fox is 133-123 in 16 seasons as a head coach and is one of six coaches to lead two teams to Super Bowl appearances, joining Don Shula, Bill Parcells, Dan Reeves, Dick Vermeil and Mike Holmgren.
Fox helped orchestrate quick turnarounds while leading Carolina and Denver to a combined six division titles and seven playoff appearances in 13 years before he took over Chicago in January 2015. But his time with the Bears was forgettable.
Hired shortly after the Bears brought in general manager Ryan Pace, Fox helped restore some of the professionalism in the locker room that was missing under former GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman.
The Bears went from six wins in 2015 to three in 2016 to five. They were 3-15 against the NFC North and dropped all six division games this year.
Injuries exposing a lack of depth have been a major issue since the regime change.
The Bears have had some big hits in the draft such as star running back Jordan Howard (2016, fifth round) and notable misses such as oft-injured receiver Kevin White (2015, first round). They have had a shaky record in free agency and struggled to replace some key players no longer with the team such as receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, tight end Martellus Bennett and kicker Robbie Gould.
Mike Glennon — signed to succeed Jay Cutler as the starting quarterback — was benched after struggling through the first four games this season. That forced Chicago to go with No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky and abandon the plan to use this as sort of a redshirt season for a player with just 13 college starts at North Carolina.
The Bears beat AFC North champion Pittsburgh in September and posted consecutive wins against Baltimore and Carolina in October. But it was a rough season overall. While Trubisky showed some promise, he also struggled at times. It didn’t help that he had no reliable receivers and was playing behind a banged-up line.
A loss to Green Bay following a bye really turned up the heat. Not only were the Packers missing the injured Aaron Rodgers, Fox had an ill-advised replay challenge near the goal line backfire into a turnover by the Bears.
Fox also left himself open to second-guessing in a 15-14 loss at home to San Francisco. Fox could have given his team a chance to win with a late touchdown drive by letting the 49ers score with 1 1/2 minutes remaining. It would have put San Francisco up by five and left Chicago with time.
Instead, Gould made a 24-yard field goal in the final seconds to give the 49ers their second win.

Bears fire head coach John Fox after finishing season 5-11
After yet another disappointing season, the Chicago Bears made the widely assumed decision to fire head coach John Fox. Per NBC Chicago:
“Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace has informed John Fox he will not return as head coach in 2018,” the team said in a statement.
During his three-year tenure with the franchise, Fox’s Bears managed an abysmal 14-34 record (.292 winning percentage), finishing last in the NFC North each year. Fox was brought in to rejuvenate an organization that hadn’t made the playoffs since 2010, and while the defense showed promise at times, the offense lacked creativity and the personnel necessary to succeed in the modern NFL.
Fox finishes with the second least successful coaching stint in Chicago Bears history, only outperforming Abe Gibron, whose teams went 11-30-1 (.274) from 1972 to 1974.
Following the announcement, Fox released a statement thanking the organization for the opportunity while lamenting on his shortcomings.
“Thank you to all the players, coaches, the city of Chicago and Bears fans everywhere, your passion for the game and this team is unmatched in the NFL,” Fox said in a statement following the news. “Today is the tough part of our results-oriented business but I wish the Bears organization the best for years to come.”
Despite his time in Chicago, Fox’s career record still stands at 10 games over .500 thanks to much more successful campaigns with the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. Over a 13-year span with both organizations, he reached the playoffs seven times while winning six division titles. He’s also one of just six head coaches to reach the Super Bowl with two separate franchises.

Why the Bears fired head coach John Fox after three disastrous seasons
Chicago was showing signs of progress, but that wasn’t enough to save its coach.
John Fox was brought to Chicago to replace former head coach Marc Trestman and lead the Bears back to glory. Instead, he left with one of the worst records in franchise history and left fans longing for the CFL transplant who could at least boast a .500 season.
Fox was dismissed by the franchise Monday according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport after three seasons and a 14-34 showing that included zero playoff appearances and zero winning records.
His final season in Chicago wasted an above-average defense thanks to a rebuilding offense that cause few opposing coordinators headaches. The Bears ranked 29th in scoring offense and 30th in yards per game as the club worked to create an identity around rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. While Trubisky showed improvement throughout the season, his small gains weren’t enough to keep Fox as his head coach.
Fox’s firing came as no surprise -- reports surfaced he’d be relieved of his duties before the 2017 season could come to a close. His time in Chicago marks the first time he’ll leave an NFL head coaching job with a losing record. Fox’s .292 winning percentage will go down as the second worst in franchise history, ahead of only Abe Gibron, who went 11-30-1 (.268) in his three seasons with the team in the early 1970s.
What made the Bears turn to Fox in the first place?
Fox was a respected name in NFL coaching circles in his 13 seasons as a head coach before heading to the Midwest. He’d led the Broncos to four straight AFC West titles in his four seasons with the club, but his inability to deliver a Super Bowl title ultimately led the two sides to agree to a mutual parting of ways in 2014. That made Fox look like a smart hire for the Bears -- though his resume in Denver would be tarnished in 2015 when first-year coach Gary Kubiak led the team to an NFL Championship.
He had been head coach with the Panthers prior to being hired by the Broncos, spending 2002-2010 on the sideline in Charlotte. Fox took the franchise to its first Super Bowl in only his second season, but failed to reach that plateau in the seven that followed. Despite winning seven games or more every year until 2010, his Carolina teams only finished the season with a winning record three times, leading owner Jerry Richardson to not renew his longtime coach’s contract after a 2-14 campaign that ultimately delivered future MVP Cam Newton to the Panthers.
In his pre-Chicago career, Fox went 119-89 in the regular season and 8-7 in the playoffs.
Who’s next for the Bears?
Chicago’s biggest need is finding a head coach who can help mold franchise quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The Rams and Eagles have served as excellent examples of what an offensively-minded coach (Sean McVay and Doug Pederson, respectively) can do for a blossoming second-year quarterback. The Bears need to find someone who can nurture Trubisky’s development while surrounding him with the talent he needs to succeed.
There will be several hot names on the coaching market associated with the Bears’ vacancy. Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur may not have been successful in his one stint as an NFL head coach — albeit with the black hole of failure known as the Browns — but he’s done wonders developing schemes in which both Sam Bradford and Case Keenum could have the best seasons of their careers. Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ stint as the Broncos head coach was most notable for his feud with a young quarterback Bears fans are plenty familiar with: Jay Cutler. While he didn’t win much in the Rocky Mountains, he’s built his profile back up under Bill Belichick and will be a commodity this offseason.
Other candidates with reputations for building sustainable offenses include Broncos interim offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo. You can check out our rundown of 2017’s hottest coaching names here.
On the personnel front, Chicago will almost certainly cut living scarecrow Mike Glennon rather than pay him an eight-figure salary to back up Trubisky. That should give the club more than $60 million in cap space that can be used to surround the young passer with talent. While the Bears are stocked at tailback between Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen, the team needs serious help at the receiver positions.
2018 free agents like Terrelle Pryor, Mike Wallace, Danny Amendola, and Jordan Matthews could offer some instant support. A handful of intriguing prospects could also bolster the team’s roster through the draft. No matter what happens, whoever steps in to fill Fox’s shoes will have his work cut out for him in Chicago.

New Arrival: 1954 Cleveland Browns Team Signed Program
1954 marked the 5th season of the Browns in the NFL. When the Browns made the jump to the NFL from the AAFC, most thought that they would struggle.  Cleveland was the preeminent AAFC team, winning the league Championship every season from 1946 to 1949. But it was believed that the talent level was lesser in the AAFC, and that a championship caliber club there was tantamount to a mid-tier club in…
