it’s all about the sea!! you trust your joy (gaudia) – your son (gnate mihi longa iucundior unice vita) – to the wind, you are shipwrecked by grief (naufragum ut eiectum spumantibus aequoris undis), pulled under by the waves (merser fortunae fluctibus), you cross the sea (multa per aequora vectus) to find your lost joy – your brother, your son, your lover – you are left on the shore with waves of grief within you (magnis curarum fluctuat undis). Yes I am still a tad salty that Kanadai did not nominate to the Olys, cuz this year (apart from that unfortunate jnats) have better season and I think they could have helped jpn team a bit more...

Skate America & the Las Vegas Invitational Recap
The first event of the modified Grand Prix series was Skate America, featuring 2-time World champ Nathan Chen. Following the event, NBC announced it would host a skating championship featuring the United State’s best skaters.
SKATE AMERICA
Skate America was the first event of the 2020-2021 Grand Prix series, featuring only six skaters not from the United States across all four disciplines. Notably absent were Jason Brown, who was scheduled to compete at Skate Canada before its cancellation, and Alysa Liu, who is still too young to compete at the senior level
Men
Nathan Chen was easily in the lead after his flawless short program, featuring a lovely quad flip and level-4 spins. In fact, Chen was only 0.66 points away from setting a new world record in the short. Vincent Zhou was less perfect, with his planned quad flip turning into a quad salchow with a slightly rough landing. Nevertheless, he placed second in the short with level 3-and-4 spins. Keegan Messing of Canada was third, but he was far behind Zhou and Chen. His short program was clean, and featured a quad lutz and toe loop.
1. Nathan Chen USA - 111.17 2. Vincent Zhou USA - 99.36 3. Keegan Messing CAN - 92.40 4. Tomoki Hiwatashi USA - 87.17 5. Alex Krasnozhon USA - 78.06 6. Alexei Bychenko ISR - 77.48 7. Ilia Malinin USA - 76.75 8. Maxim Naumov USA - 70.91 9. Camden Pulkinen USA - 69.09  10. Joseph Kang USA - 68.08 11. Jimmy Ma USA - 63.36 12. Daniel Samohin ISR - 61.60
The free skate was another story. Chen started off strong with a wonderful quad flip-triple toe loop combination, but after landing a triple loop and lutz, he popped his quad salchow into a double. Following that, he was marked by judges for failing to show a clear jump in his flying spin. Chen seemed to successfully rally,  earning a level-4 step sequence and landing 2 quad toe loop combinations. However, he then popped his triple axel into a single at the end of the program. He still earned good scores, but it was far from his best skate. Unfortunately, Vincent Zhou fared no better. He opened with an under-rotated quad lutz before landing a clean quad lutz in combination. He then landed a clean triple flip and triple axel, but only received a level-3 on his first spin. After a level-4 step sequence, Zhou under-rotated his quad salchow. Zhou then landed two more combinations, but could not catch Chen. Placing third in the free skate was Keegan Messing, who skated clean with level-4 spins and step sequences, but had two of his jumps downgraded when he under-rotated and stepped out of them.
1. Nathan Chen USA - 299.15 2. Vincent Zhou USA - 275.10  3. Keegan Messing CAN - 266.42  4. Tomoki Hiwatashi USA - 245.30 5. Ilia Malinin USA - 220.31  6. Alexei Bychenko ISR - 214.62  7. Alex Krasnozhon USA - 214.61 8. Maxim Naumov USA - 214.27 9. Camden Pulkinen USA - 207.82 10. Jimmy Ma USA - 196.98 11. Joesph Phan USA - 192.37 12. Daniel Samohin ISR - 184.54
Nathan Chen showed that he was human in popping two of his jumps, but had a wonderful short program and seemed to be handling the changes with COVID-19 fairly well. Vincent Zhou seems to be going all-out this year in a bid to beat Nathan, but was unable to grasp the opportunity this time. Keegan Messing gave Canadians something to be excited about with the bronze here, as he’s one of the few Canadian skaters to have competed yet this year. It’s still to early to tell what will happen at the United States nationals, but we can count on Nathan landing more quads and being a skating powerhouse. Hopefully Vincent will sort out his jumps and offer competition for Nathan. And, of course, we can’t count out Jason Brown, who will get to skate for the first time this year at Nationals.
Ladies
Mariah Bell was in the lead after the short program with a clean program featuring all level-4 spins and step sequences, three triples, and a double axel. Bradie Tenell was in second with level-4 spins and sequences as well, but under-rotated one of her triples. Audrey Shin, a newcomer, was in third, with level-3-and-4 spins and sequences, but 3 clean triples and a double axel.
1. Mariah Bell USA - 76.48 2. Bradie Tennell USA - 73.29  3. Audrey Shin USA - 69.77  4. Karen Chen USA - 68.13 5. Amber Glenn USA - 67.85 6. Paige Rydberg USA - 63.91  7. Shan Lin CHN - 59.29  8. Sierra Venetta USA - 59.28  9. Finley Hawk USA - 59.12 10. Starr Andrews USA - 57.20 11. Pooja Kalyan USA - 55.50  12. Gracie Gold USA - 46.36
The free skate saw Mariah Bell in poor form, but she managed to hold on to her short program lead. Bell started off the free well enough, but left off a double toe loop in a combination in the middle of the program. She then put out her only level-3 spin (everything else was level-4), and had her triple lutz downgraded. She ranked 4th in the free skate. However, it is important to note that there was a 1-point difference between 1st and 4th. Bradie Tenell ranked 1st, opening with an under-rotated triple toe loop. The rest of her jumps landed cleanly, however, and she earned level-4 on all of her spins and step sequence. She couldn’t catch Bell, and earned the silver. Audrey Shin won bronze with a 3rd-place free skate. Her second triple toe loop was under-rotated, and had a slightly messy triple salchow, but landed the rest of her jumps, including a pair of double axels, cleanly, and had all level-4 spins.
Mariah Bell - 212.73 (1. 76.48 4. 136.25)
Bradie Tenell - 211.07 (2. 73.29 1. 137.78)
Audrey Shin USA - 206.15 (3. 69.77 3. 136.38)
Karen Chen USA - 204.90 (4. 68.13 2. 136.77)
Amber Glenn USA - 190.09 (5. 67.85 6. 122.24)
Shan Lin CHN - 182.11 (7. 59.29 5. 122.82)
Paige Rydberg USA - 178.13 (6. 63.91 8. 114.22)
Starr Andrews USA - 171.70 (10. 57.20 7. 114.50)
Sierra Venetta USA - 170.72 (8. 59.28 9. 111.44)
Pooja Kalyan USA - 158.95 (11. 55.50 10. 103.45)
Finley Hawk USA - 154.25 (9. 59.12 11. 95.13)
Gracie Gold USA - 127.82 (12. 46.36 12. 81.46)
Mariah Bell and Bradie Tenell proved that there is more to women’s figure skating in the United States than just Alysa Liu. However, they also demonstrated the rift between the young, new “quad queens” emerging, and the older women of the double axel era. Audrey Shin emerged as a new contender in the national women’s scene, and will hopefully add much-needed depth to the women’s roster in the United States. Nationals will depend on Alysa Liu’s performance (more on that down below), but we can expect Mariah and Bradie to be fighting for a chance to go to worlds, as Alysa is still too young, and Audrey Shin attempting to podium at nationals.
THE LAS VEGAS INVITATIONAL
The Las Vegas Invitational was an event that aired a week or so after Skate America. The top few men and women from Skate America and the previous nationals competed on either team Johnny or Tara, with the PCS scores for men multiplied by 1.6 to make the scoring even. The event was fine, if a bit dramatic at points, but it was interesting to see skaters free from pressure (or drowning in it). Alexei Krasnozhon was in good form, landing a quad loop and overall skating a solid free program. Nathan Chen added the quad loop to his program as well for the first time since 2017. He used his Rocketman program from last year, and performed better here than at Skate America if you multiply the PCS by the traditional 2.0. Meanwhile, Ilia Malinin, a young second-generation skater, seemed to let the pressure of skating on the same team as Nathan Chen (Team Tara) get to his head, and had the lowest-scoring male free skate. Audrey Shin and Starr Andrews, both also with Team Tara, were absolute dynamite, giving Team Tara a substantial lead. Team Johnny seemed to struggle, as their two strongest skaters, Vincent Zhou and Alysa Liu, had difficulties. Vincent finished with a mediocre score, which is forgivable considering Skate America had been just a few days before, but the United States Women’s champion was not having a good day. Alysa Liu was fourth at the ISP points challenge, and had the lowest women’s score here. She popped multiple jumps, and overall had a rough skate. But I personally think it’s reasonable. She’s currently experiencing teenage growth - she’s 15, and a global pandemic. What teenager wouldn’t be rattled and thrown off? She’s also probably had to adapt her skating style to accompany the extra inches she’s gained as she’s grown up, and probably has had to change her jumping style. If she manages to figure things out by nationals, Alysa Liu will be a forced to be reckoned with. However, if she continues to have a rough season, Bradie Tenell and Mariah Bell will have to carry the United State’s women for another year at Worlds.
