got the cops called on me for the most hilariously sensible reason last night
So i have a new industrial piercing (my first piercing..! i love it •w•), and it got infected because of course it did, it's a cartilage piercing and i live outside. Context i've been living in my car for the past few weeks, which has been pretty good but one of the tradeoffs is i do not have a bathroom. The piercer told me if the piercing got infected I could soak it in saltwater, so i needed a source of 1. salt, 2. water that is warm or at least not the below-freezing ambient temperature i currently exist in.
Gas stations have both these things. (I have yet to purchase salt for my occasional propane stove cooking). Only problem is it was past midnight in a rural area, so I didn't find a 24 hour convenience store until around 100 miles into my route for the evening.
At 3 AM local time the store was inhabited by just One stern-looking employee who was mopping the floor. My grungy ass walks in carrying a small collapsible bowl and immediately begins casing the place like the world's shittiest thief, looking for those little free salt packets. I looked around the (empty, no hot food at 3 AM) hot dog stand and saw only wet condiments so i circled back around to the grocery section in case they were selling salt shakers I could buy. No luck so i desperately returned to the hot dog counter in case I missed the salt, and noticed a cabinet labeled CONDIMENTS below the dog cooker, which did conceal salt packets. I stuffed a handful of them in my pocket and hoped the mopping woman wouldn't ask, then pivoted to the bathroom where I locked myself for the next fifteen minutes.
I filled my bowl with hot water which was actually cool water but at least it wasn't frigid, and mixed salt into it and held it to my ear. After a few minutes the staff, who had been understandably watching me from around corners the entire time I was searching for salt, knocked on the door. I replied "hello?" and she didn't respond, so I assumed she was just checking if anyone was in there before she tried entering to continue mopping. I finished cleaning my sad little ear and bought a bag of yogurt pretzels as a gesture of good will because I felt bad for taking her salt and taking too much time in the bathroom when she needed to clean.
Enter The Pig. I had returned to my car and grabbed my first aid kit to apply antiobiotic ointment, when an officer entered the store. Trepidation when he arrived since I knew I was being a freak, but then i thought he was just doing his own shopping, then he came back out and approached my vehicle.
Rolled down my window and he asks what was going on in the bathroom. (What if i had been just taking a long shit??). So I showed him my ear and my bowl and explained, as Alertly, Calmly, and Soberly as i could after driving for multiple hours after midnight, to the face of someone who can ruin my life with a penstroke, that I was on the road and had to soak this infected piercing. Luckily it was a confused young cop who was too bewildered to inquire much further, not an old hardass who might start asking more challenging questions such as "where are you going" or "where are you staying tonight and why are you washing your ear at the gas station and not there." He clearly barely even looked at my car - asked if i was a local when my license plate is from two timezones away - and let me go without even collecting my information.
That was the sixth time that police have confronted me for acting outside social norms. The first time was because I was plucking an invasive plant species from the side of the road and he thought I was falling when I walked up & down the slope. The second time I was walking home alone at night, and maybe someone called because I had a backpack on and they thought I was trying to rob a house. I was just walking home from the train. The third time I had been biking home in the dark without a headlight, and i fell on my face and didn't know I was bleeding until a bastard pulled up and told me someone called because they thought I got hit by a car. The fourth time was when I fell in the river last winter and i was knocking on random doors asking for directions home to minimize my risk of hypothermia, and I suppose the woman who drove me home called to send someone to make sure i was okay? The fifth time was the first time I slept in my car, which ironically was before I started serially sleeping in my car. I was falling asleep on the highway after an all-nighter so I took the next exit and took a nap in my driver's seat at the end of a random residential street before I ended up on the news, and that's how I learned suburbanites are paranoid as all hell about anything out of the ordinary because a cop knocked on my window and asked me if I was drunk (who would say yes to that question?). Now I select my sleeping sites very carefully, which is probably the most annoying thing about hashtag vanlife, but I haven't gotten The Knock again yet and sometimes when I pull into random public lands after dark I wake up to mountains I've never seen before and that fuels my soul.
Lesson learned is that if you need to snort sodium chloride in a gas station bathroom at 3 AM, just have an ear piercing and dampen the hair around it and carry a bowl around, and you've got a story that's Too Weird To Be Making Shit Up.
#seriously how do y'all stay out of trouble#I Am Just Living My Life why does that incite so much suspicion.#this time was fair though i 1000% looked like a criminal who was about to drive home under an influence#blogging#FOLKS WHO FOLLOWED FOR ART I HOPE YOU ENJOY STORYTIME TOO LOL.#I saw THIRTEEN!!!! shooting stars while driving last night#i think that is a new personal record. was there a meteor shower? surely there was.#Two of them were bright enough to leave a dust trail.. ⭐︎つ⭐︎#mountain roads are so scary lol what do you Mean there is no guard rail on this narrow winding road that drops off into Death Zone#not to mention when there is snow on the road..?#my tires spun out the other night because i was clinging too close to the uphill side of the mountain and went off the road#in my defense i could not see the lines on the road on account of they were covered by snow#anyway i sunk deep but luckily i have 4WD so i could wiggle out without help#but the snow gripped my tires and pulled them in the opposite direction i was trying to go..#what if i was driving on the side facing downhill and slipped off the road and the snow gripped me.#best case scenario: car is Funked. worst case scenario Death#anyway i think my ear is slightly less painful & inflamed this morning..? i am going to go wash it at a much less sussy hour#the sky is so clear and bright here...#madly in love with the milky way.#i wonder how often ppl assume ppl are sneaking hard drugs when they actually have a completely legal reason to be acting strange.#not that i'm not living on the fringes of the law rn with the whole car thing and that's the only reason i had to be weird at a gas station#but like... lives be strange and complex and human behavior is rarely as simple as it seems there is always a story!

Things that make some of my muses have to stop and just. Reevaluate their entire worldview for a minute.
Daniel: Going out on a hike or long drive, something that takes him into the continent and finding some picturesque overlook or pulling over in the middle of the Great Plains and looking at the seemingly infinite expanse of land. This is all his. He represents all of this. And at one point, he didn’t want anything to do with it.
Noel: Hearing about the plight of foreign powers, be it a strained budget or political unrest of any sort, and the way his mind immediately starts going over ways he could potentially take advantage of that for the benefit of England. He doesn’t have to fight anymore, but every now and then he has to cringe over how absolutely ruthless he was once capable of being, and how on an instinctual level, it doesn’t seem to have really gone away.
Bradley: He’s so quick to make jokes or take an offered situation incredibly lightly, which has fairly often led to an awkward conversation standstill where he realises too late he was a bit of an ass for a minute. He will tell himself he’s gonna slow down and try to think more before he speaks in the future. He doesn’t.
Gabriel: Rain. Anywhere, anytime, even just a cloudy sky and an uptick in atmospheric pressure has the hair on the back of his neck raising, and he’s going to start looking for anything in his vicinity that looks like it could be a flash flood hazard. The desert doesn’t soak up water quickly, and when it rains, it rains fast. When he’s away from home and in a more temperate environment, rain still solicits excitement and panic in equal measure. Desert rain is beautiful and dangerous and rare, and occasionally he has to just be emotional for a minute when he’s at a café in Paris and it starts sprinkling and no one does anything.

Kei truck
The utility of our friend's Honda kei truck is amazing - ease of loading with all-round drop sides, maneuverable with great all round visibility, tight turning circle, and with 4WD it easily copes with small field trails, wet grass, mud, and similar that would have stopped many other vehicles.
Here, we drove out onto our tanbo to install warning signs in preparation for laying some enoshishi traps. After, we drove to another friends' to pick up a surplus air-conditioner...

14 February 2024
14 February 2024 - I got up for a video call interview for a job back in the US. The interview did NOT go well. I felt like I was rambling, and there was a moment where I thought, "am I still talking? What am I even saying right now?" It was not ideal. After the interview, I made some breakfast and packed up my gear. Elise had invited me to be a volunteer park ranger today with her and her summer intern mentee. Elise picked me up around 9 am, and Arnie and Uncle Mitch were hanging out in the front yard, and they were excited to meet Elise. I quickly introduced them to Elise, and then I hopped in Elise's car, and we headed to Pararaha (South of Piha). We met up with Josh (the summer intern), and we drove in two 4WD vehicles out to Karekare Beach, at the end of the Pararaha trail. We drove across the river, and out onto the black sand beach.
Tumblr media
As Elise drove, she drifted in the sand around corners. I screamed with joy! We drove along the beach, with huge waves forming pipelines that would eventually crash in a big splash of whitewater and boils and foam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we drove, I looked out West over the ocean and South across the huge black sand beach and East towards the jungle and the Waitakere Mountain Range. It was surreal. We arrived at the bottom of the Pararaha Trail and parked both 4WD vehicles there. We loaded all the dry clothes into Josh's vehicle (which was staying at this spot at the bottom of the Pararaha Trail). We put all the gear for the day and lunches in Elise's vehicle, and Elise hopped in the back; she told Josh to drive (since it was his last day), and she told me to sit in the front seat (so I could enjoy the ride). Josh drove us to the top of the Pararaha Trail. We parked a vehicle there and got ready for our mission: baiting the poison traps. I put on a high-vis orange vest that said "PARK RANGER." We grabbed our gear and started hiking around 11 am. As we hiked down the trail, every time that we saw a pink marker on the trail, we looked around for the traps. We opened up the trap, pulled the old contents out and threw them into a garbage bag, and filled the trap with new poison bait. We did this for probably ten different traps, and each trap took probably under one minute. When we got to the confluence of Pararaha and Blue Canyon, we put on our wetsuits.
---side mission---
After we finished the side mission, we continued down the Pararaha Trail, which followed the river. Some of the trail was just off to the side of the river, but most of the trail was creek-walking through the river. As we walked down the river, there were several waterfalls, Some of the waterfalls were not very steep, and we were able to carefully hike down or scramble down the waterfall. Some of the waterfalls had big pools at the bottom, and we'd jump down the waterfalls into the deep pools at the bottom of the waterfalls (one person would down climb carrying the poison bag so that it didn't get wet).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The canyon got less and less steep, and some point, we were running down the low-grade waterfalls! We stopped for a few minutes to eat our lunches, and we continued hiking out. We got out of the river and onto the hike out trail that leads to Karekare Beach. On this hike out, we refilled a few more poison bait traps. We arrived at the end of the trail and hiked out onto Karekare Beach to our 4WD vehicle around 3 pm. We hopped in, and Josh drove us through the black sand, drifting and fish-tailing, back to the river, across the river, and onto the road. We drove back to the top of Pararaha Trail where the other vehicle was parked. We said goodbye to Josh, and Elise and I drove back to the Park Ranger Depot. Elise dropped me off in Henderson.
Back at the Good Vibes Flat Tribe house in Henderson, Jimmy had brought home Maori raw fish and fry bread, and we had a family dinner with all four of us: Jimmy, Arnie, Taylor, and me.
I'm grateful for Jimmy; he had me fill up Elise's tank with a jerry can of diesel fuel he had before Elise and I left for our mission this morning. I'm grateful to Elise; she thought of me and invited me to join in as a volunteer park ranger! I'm grateful to have spent the whole day with Elise at Pararaha, hiking through beautiful places, seeing gorgeous waterfalls, jumping into bright blue pools. I'm grateful for Jimmy for hosting a family dinner tonight and bringing the flatmates together.

Scenes from the trail - snow edition.
This is the Great Glen Way in Abriachan, which is also the access track to our place. It's a forestry dirt track under there, so no gritting or ploughing. It took us about 10 minutes to reach the road today, courtesy of 4WD, diff lock and BF Goodrich tyres.

Escambia
I dreamt about fishing, I know why, I think, but it was nice to be finally outdoors, like in a survey of something I've been postponing. I was with some people planning a canoe trip in florida, felt like the suwannee, but heading to the beach in pensacola, the trail terminus. A new course. Everyone was sleeping where they wanted, people looking dead but they weren't. Passed out drunk in gulleys and creeks, they just slept where they fell like a video game.
We were flinging wet bed clothes onto a clothesline array, the night starry and lit up. On the patio a man was rubbing my back it felt good to me then lower and lower rubbing my ass still feeling ok I was pretty sore. I had to get up and pee then, peed in my dream which I never ever do. What a strong stream my cock grew like a beansprout or umbrella, seedling elaborate fleshy candelabra and sprayed milk everywhere.
My friend was driving showing me his newly bleached teeth how they'd even filed the points down. I need to do that. I kept fidgeting with the 4wd selector as he drove like can we go off-roading now. I'm in the sandy dunes. Saw a menu in a seafood restaurant that had been written like poetry, like a found poem someone wrote accidentally, five star review. Most beautiful thing I remember. I wish I'd had a camera, I would've taken a picture. Caption it something rich. Etouffee. Magnolia. They don't have the most intricate seafood here, but it's pretty good. You'd like it.

Panticosa
Today was a day hike from Panticosa to the Valle de la Ripera. It was a bit cool first thing but with the inevitable uphill start we soon all warmed up. It was however a warning of things to come as we move higher.
Today’s hike was stunning, through a gorgeous valley. Before getting to the valley in one part of the path was a gate with a sign asking you to close the gate as there were animals on the other side. We assumed cows and were correct. As we were walking along I could hear bells getting louder until eventually we were face to face with a cow. She was happily munching on the side of the track but as we approached decided to park herself across the track and munch on something on the other side.
Here shepherd Jose took over. She looked none too pleased that he wanted her to move (if looks could kill) and at one point I thought she was going to give him a nudge with her horns. Thankfully she finally turned around and headed up the hill in front of us. I was sure she was going to deliberately poop on Jose but he passed by unscathed.
As we got into the valley there were lots of horses as well as cows just roaming around everywhere. You’ll see in the photos Jose obviously got a taste for shepherding cows as Wend and Rob have headed off the road and are passing to the left of the cows, meanwhile Jose is on the road getting them to move aside - the cheek 😂
Not long after we entered the valley our trip notes told us there would be some picnic tables. We had encountered a couple of other hikers along the way but suddenly there were people everywhere. It turns out the tourist train we’d seen in town brings people out here on a 4WD track so they can walk along the valley and then it takes them back.
After morning tea at the picnic tables there was a discussion about which of the various options we would take from there. I was happy that we landed on walking along the valley as I thought it was spectacular. By now we could hear the marmots but with all the activity I doubted we would actually see one. After our walk up the valley we were back at the picnic tables for lunch and had a visit from two curious calves - very cute 😍 Wend also spotted a marmot half way up the hill opposite us. We all got to see it scampering across but way too far off for a photo.
Being a day trip the one drawback was that it was an out and back unless you followed the road the train takes a lot of the way back. We weren’t particularly keen on continuing on the 4WD track and we noticed a trail that seemed to run alongside the road, albeit on the other side of the river. So off we set, unfortunately the track kept getting very muddy so we would move higher to get around the mud. We we’re getting higher and higher and at the place we should have come off the road and onto the track we were considerably higher than the track.
Jose consulted one of his hiking apps that shows all the trails and confirmed that he’d found a way we could rejoin our track to get us back to Panticosa. Long story short it looks like this track is no longer maintained so we pretty much lost it and found ourselves even higher now above where we were meant to be.
Jose disappeared down the steep slope to see if he could find a way to get back into our track. He was gone quite a while and the three of us were getting quite concerned. I’d tried looking for him on the Find-my app but it couldn’t locate him. Suddenly a WhatsApp came through that he’d found a way.
Well I spent a bit of time on my bum (intentionally) and sort of slid and side stepped most of the way down. Happily we rejoined the track and were now well and truly looking forward to our post walk drinks. The rest of the walk passed without incident and we did indeed enjoy our post walk drinks and some tapas - I for one was starving.
A bit of a relax in our rooms (plus some washing) before we met up for a drink and dinner. These dinners are killing me, I roll home stuffed every night. So much for losing weight on this trip 🙄

Adventure Companion: Exploring the Outdoors with a 4WD Motorhome
Are you someone who loves the great outdoors but also enjoys the comforts of home? If so, motorhome might be your perfect adventure companion.
Combining the freedom to explore off-road locations with the convenience of having your own cosy space on wheels, motorhomes are becoming increasingly popular among outdoor enthusiasts. In this blog post, let’s explore why to buy motorhome 4WD for your next adventure.
Tumblr media
Off-Road Capability
One of the most significant advantages of a motorhome is its off-road capability. Unlike traditional motorhomes, which are limited to paved roads, motorhomes can handle rough terrain with ease. Whether you're traversing rocky trails, sandy deserts, or muddy back roads, a motorhome gives you the freedom to explore places that are off-limits to other vehicles.
With its robust four-wheel-drive system, high ground clearance, and rugged construction, a motorhome is built to tackle the toughest terrain. Whether you're driving through steep mountain passes, crossing shallow rivers, or navigating treacherous switchbacks, you can trust that your motorhome has the power and capability to get you where you need to go safely and comfortably.
Freedom to Explore
With a 4WD motorhome, the world is your oyster. Instead of being tied to crowded campgrounds and RV parks, you can venture off the beaten path and find your own slice of paradise. Whether you prefer remote wilderness locations or hidden beachside campsites, a motorhome allows you to explore untamed landscapes and discover hidden gems that most people never get to see.
Imagine waking up to the sound of birdsong in a secluded forest glade or watching the sunset over a pristine mountain lake—all from the comfort of your own cosy motorhome. With a motorhome, you can escape the crowds and experience the beauty of nature in its purest form.
Comfort and Convenience
While off-road capability is important, buy motorhome 4WD for comfort and convenience are also key considerations when choosing a motorhome. Fortunately, motorhomes offer the best of both worlds. With all the amenities of a traditional motorhome, such as a comfortable bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a hot shower, you can enjoy all the comforts of home no matter where your adventures take you.
After a day of exploring rugged backcountry trails, there's nothing better than returning to your motorhome for a hot meal, a refreshing shower, and a good night's sleep. With its spacious interior and cosy furnishings, a motorhome provides a welcome retreat from the elements, allowing you to relax and recharge before your next adventure.
Versatility
Another advantage of a motorhome is its versatility. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway, a cross-country road trip, or an extended expedition into the wilderness, a motorhome can handle it all. With ample storage space for gear, provisions, and supplies, you can pack everything you need for your adventure and hit the road with confidence.
From camping in remote wilderness areas to exploring scenic national parks, a motorhome allows you to travel wherever your heart desires. With its powerful engine, rugged chassis, and advanced four-wheel-drive system, you can tackle any terrain with ease and confidence, knowing that your motorhome is up to the challenge.
Peace of Mind
Finally, one of the biggest benefits of owning a motorhome is the peace of mind that comes with knowing you're prepared for whatever the road may bring. Whether you're driving through remote wilderness areas or navigating treacherous terrain, you can trust that your motorhome has the power and capability to get you where you need to go safely and comfortably.
With its advanced safety features, rugged construction, and reliable performance, a motorhome provides peace of mind on even the most challenging journeys. Whether you're traveling alone, with family, or with friends, you can rest assured that your motorhome will keep you safe, comfortable, and ready for adventure.
Final Words
In conclusion, a motorhome is the ultimate adventure companion for anyone who loves the great outdoors. With its off-road capability, freedom to explore, comfort and convenience, versatility, and peace of mind, buy motorhome 4WD that offers everything you need to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your next adventure today!

Maximising Your Outdoor Adventures with a 4x4 Fridge Slide
When it comes to overlanding and off-road adventures, convenience and efficiency are key. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or a weekend warrior, having quick access to your food and beverages can make a significant difference in your outdoor experience. This is where a 4x4 fridge slide comes into play.
What is a Fridge Slide?
A fridge slide is a specially designed sliding mechanism that allows you to mount your portable fridge in your vehicle and slide it out for easy access. Think of it as a drawer for your fridge. These slides are robust, designed to handle the rigors of off-road driving while ensuring that your fridge remains secure and easily accessible.
Benefits of Using a Fridge Slide
1. Convenience
With a 4WD rear drawers, you no longer need to awkwardly reach into the back of your vehicle to access your fridge. The slide allows you to pull the fridge out to a comfortable position, making it easy to grab a cold drink or prepare a meal on the go.
2. Space Optimisation
A fridge slide helps in organising your vehicle’s storage space more efficiently. By securely mounting your fridge, you free up space for other essential gear. This organisation is crucial for overlanders who need to pack smartly for extended trips.
3. Enhanced Safety
Reaching into a packed vehicle to get to your fridge can be hazardous, especially on uneven terrain. A 4x4 fridge slide eliminates the need to climb into the back of your vehicle, reducing the risk of injury. Moreover, it ensures that the fridge is firmly secured, preventing it from becoming a dangerous projectile in rough conditions.
4. Durability
Quality fridge slides are built to withstand the tough conditions of off-road driving. They are typically made from heavy-duty materials like stainless steel or powder-coated aluminium, which are resistant to rust and corrosion.

Choosing the Right Fridge Slide
When selecting a 4x4 fridge slide, there are several factors to consider:
Size and Compatibility
Ensure the slide is compatible with the size of your fridge and your vehicle. Measure the dimensions of your fridge and the available space in your vehicle to find the right fit.
Weight Capacity
Check the weight capacity of the fridge slide to ensure it can support your fridge, especially when it’s fully loaded. Overloading a slide can lead to damage or failure.
Locking Mechanism
A good 4WD rear drawers should have a secure locking mechanism to keep the fridge in place both when it's retracted and extended. This prevents accidental movement while driving or when accessing the fridge.
Ease of Installation
Some fridge slides are easier to install than others. Look for a model that comes with clear instructions and all necessary hardware. If you’re not confident in installing it yourself, consider seeking professional help.
Installation Tips
Read the Manual: Always start by reading the manufacturer’s instructions. Each model may have specific installation requirements.
Use Quality Tools: Ensure you have the right tools for the job to avoid damaging the slide or your vehicle.
Double-Check Measurements: Measure twice, install once. Accurate measurements are crucial for a secure fit.
Test Before Use: After installation, test the slide to ensure it operates smoothly and securely holds your fridge.
