“Ignoring Reality Doesn’t Make It Less real. It’s Still Going To Happen” Yasmin Moganed)
While half the world is ablaze due to catastrophic climate change our petty minded politicians have weaponised the green agenda in a selfish attempt to gain votes. The Tory Party would have us all burn.
“Michael Gove warns against treating net zero like ‘religious crusade’ as he calls for clampdown on green measures." (The Sun: 23/07/23)
Labour is no better.
“…shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves admitted on Friday that …the party's much-heralded flagship commitment to spend £28 billion a year on green investment would be delayed” (Guardian:09/07/23)
If, like much of Europe and North America last week, we had been in the grips of a 40degree heat wave and were breathing in hot polluted air, I wonder if the Uxbridge by-election result would have been different? But it’s no good speculating. The least well off amongst us are unable to afford green policies and those with money are unwilling to subsidise them. Neither political party seems able to tell the electorate that saving the planet is going to be personally expensive.
Maybe this is part of our island mentality? Maybe we think we can remain immune from the horrors surrounding us? Do we really subscribe to David Cameron’s mantra of cut the “green crap”? He ended onshore wind projects, solar subsidies and energy efficiency schemes. We all paid the price for those shortsighted decisions in our massive energy bills last winter.
It was Cameron’s fear that right wing UKIP was leaching voters away from the Tory Party that led to the Brexit referendum, and we all know how that is working out for us.
“Britain to be worst-performing major economy this year, warns IMF…Britain is the only G7 economy forecast to shrink in 2023" (Guardian: 31/01/230)
Following in Cameron’s footsteps, we now have Gove and Sunak also telling us its time to cut the “green crap" because they see it as a vote winner. Sod the unintended consequences of such a decision. Having refused to finance a dirty vehicle scrappage scheme, and having seen the electorate of Uxbridge and South Ruislip turn against ULEZ, they perceive abandoning green policies as a way to beat Labour at the next election. Labour, worried about their defeat, see abandoning green policies as a way of reassuring the electorate that voting Labour will be cost free.
There is no “cost-free” option for saving the planet and it is time our politicians had the courage to admit this publicly. It is also time for us, the electorate, to start thinking internationally. As the great Elizabethan poet John Donne once wrote :
“No man is an island, entire of itself…and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee” (John Donne, 1572-1631)

As I walked around in 40degree weather with exposed knees.
