"Huh- Hey!" Zhen exclaimed as he fumbled with the doll. He looked about but they were gone in the wind before he managed to get a good look at them.
Weird…
He cradled it in his hands. A careful finger moving what would be silver bangs framing its face.
"This is nothing like him," he muttered under his breath, pulling at the tail wrapped around its waist. Maybe he was being too critical. Just a tad as his expression became disgruntled, finding every bit that was simply off place beneath his golden gaze.
But then his expression softened. He raised one of its arms, waving as he said mockingly, "You should be like me, old friend! Have more confidence in yourself!" He could hear the sound of Ginjiro's pride in his ears, the laughing season of life that would follow suit after quick quips and jabs they have been known to do.
It was a better time. The pair shoulder to shoulder, sharing drinks, sounds of merriment. The shimmer of silver by his side was a joy, a delight. His heart wasn't so battered and bruised, wide open for display.
Now.
Fractured, broken, closing.
His grip tightened over the plushie, his gaze becoming shadowed as he stared intensely at the doll.
"I hope you are faring much better than I am, friend…"

Voyager meets a ship of refugees who live in a radiation zone in a pocket dimension but then Voyager itself gets caught in such a space pocket. A three part book series doesn't really work for me when it's all about the same crew - it just seems like an unedited single book manuscript.
