Crucible Forges can be used in party play, too, with multiple players able to charge up the Forge for their own benefits – although GGG head Chris Wilson tells us “Crucible encounters get really hard – maxing out would be basically instant death.” In classic Path of Exile fashion, then, you’ll have to balance out the risk of the encounter versus your potential reward. Keep rolling, rolling, rolling Making just one Crucible passive tree is only the beginning, however; upon finding a rare resource called an Igneous Geode, you can create a new Forge capable of combining the passive trees of two separate weapons of matching type. One of the weapons is destroyed in this process, and the trees are smashed together “in unpredictable ways,” meaning you’re potentially taking a big risk as to what you’ll actually end up with. Wilson remarks that, while the skill tree can only ever be five deep, you can keep fusing weapons together should you want to risk your current setup for something potentially even better (he goes so far as to reference the classic PoE ethos of encouraging players to gamble a little further than they perhaps should when crafting). He also points out that chosen skill nodes are more likely to be included when fusing, so you do get a little bit of control over the potential RNG. In low-income countries, most loss occurs during production, while in developed countries much food – about 100 kilograms per person per year – is wasted at the consumption stage. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food waste is responsible for 8 percent of global human-made greenhouse gas emissions. The FAO concludes that nearly 30 percent of all available agricultural land in the world - 1.4 billion hectares - is used for produced but uneaten food. The global blue water footprint of food waste is 250 km3, that is the amount of water that flows annually through the Volga or 3 times Lake Geneva.

Poverty 

Although poverty is often discussed in terms of dollar amounts, quality of life is also part of the conversation. Living in poverty means a life of struggle and deprivation. Children living in poverty often lack access to quality education. Sometimes it’s because there are not enough quality schools, their parents cannot afford school fees, or because impoverished families need their children to work. Since 2015, the World Bank has defined extreme poverty as people living on $1.90 or less a day, measured using the international poverty line. But extreme poverty is not only about low income; it is also about what people can or cannot afford. Poverty lines are not the same in all countries. In higher-income countries, the cost of living is higher and so the poverty line is higher, too. In 2017, the World Bank announced new median poverty lines, grouping countries into low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries and finding the median poverty line for those groups: 

$1.91 per person per day — in 33 low-income countries

$3.21 per person per day — in 32 lower-middle-income countries, such as India and the Philippines 

$5.48 per person per day — in 32 upper-middle-income countries, such as Brazil and South Africa

$21.70 per person per day — in 29 high-income countries

While exploring and learning about some of these themes, I felt a more strong and personal connection to street dumping as I am always surrounded by it when I go outside and it’s making our streets and cities look terrible and unbearable to walk in. While all the other themes are just as important I think street dumping will benefit me for working with as I know more about the topic, its accessible and practical for me to work in than the other themes.

You Can’t Do That!

Just a scene. Science!Gordon from We’ll Be Home For Christmas saw the ep today and had a fit in my head and had to be heard.

SPOILERS FOR 3.21.

Now I just have to write a little scene for the Virg, cos yeah, that thing that happened to him needs a little Nutty attention ::cackles::

“You’re kidding me.”

“N-no, I’m n-not.” Brains was obviously clueless.

“You can’t do that.”

“I’m afraid we have to, Gordon.” Scott’s blue eyes flashed at him, that furious determination, now bordering on obsession.

The aquanaut stared at his brother and their friend. “Do it in space.”

“N-not possible. I-I’m s-sorry, G-Gordon.”

“Why not? Everything is dead in space. Why do you have to do it on the ocean?!” Already his mind was calculating the species that would be endangered by the testing if something went wrong. Not to mention the immediate geological effects.

“There is a n-need for atmospheric pressure.”

“Then put it in a space capsule. It’s going to be in one eventually anyway. Why risk lives?”

“What lives?”

Gordon stared at Scott. “I’m going to act like I didn’t hear that.” Or it might get physical. He reined himself in. He was used to the lack of understanding his eldest brother had regarding Gordon’s love for all things ocean, but this was beyond it.

“No, you can’t do this. We are in an environmentally fragile area. You know that. Dad knew that. We have a responsi-“

Scott erupted. “We are doing this! We have to. Dad is relying on us!”

“Hey! I understand that, but you are risking too much!”

“It is the only way!”

“How do you know that?!”

“We don’t have time! Dad could be dying!”

The room fell silent.

Fury boiled in his bones. “You would risk all those lives for the chance of one?”

“He’s our father!”

“He matters, yes, but are you going to put his life above the thousands in the blast area?”

“Gordon-“

“I thought you cared for all life, Scott. ‘Everyone is worth saving’? Is species a requirement?”

“Gordon, we can’t-“

Gordon shoved himself in his brother’s face, his finger gesticulating millimetres from his nose. “Yes, you can! We are International Rescue, we save, WE DO NOT KILL!”

“FINE! Then what the hell do we do? Leave Dad out there?”

The aquanaut turned to Brains. “What are the chances of a major explosion?”

Brains looked extremely uncomfortable and obviously would have preferred to be anywhere but in the middle of a Tracy brother showdown. “It is always a p-possibility.” But Gordon could see it in the man’s face. There was no doubt. This was testing. He had no way of guaranteeing any positive result and the possibility of a negative was all too likely.

“Don’t do it.”

“I-I’m sorry, G-Gordon.” Brains straightened up and set his shoulders. “It is the only way.”

Gordon stared at him and then back at his eldest brother.

The blue eyes glaring back at him were cold.

“So much for Tracy honour.” The words were spat in his brother’s face and Gordon spun on his heels and stormed out. Hell, how was he going to evacuate several square kilometres of open ocean? Deterrent harmonics. Virgil was going to love that. Force fields? Could they cover that much area?

The list of possibilities, details of migration routes, the disruptions this would cause, the loss of ocean flora...hell, they were only miles from a major ocean sanctuary...as his hand hit the glass of the aquarium the world blurred in front of him and he had to blink madly.

The elevator dropped, the spinners deposited his uniform, and he had to blink again.

It was betrayal. Betrayal in everything he believed. A sacrifice for a need that he and his brothers had, that would take innocent lives. He wanted to save his Dad. God, did he. He ached for his father, dreaded to find they were too late. He understood the urgency.

But.

His elevator slowed to its stop at the bottom of the shaft and Gordon wilted just a little for just a moment, his gloved hand reaching to lean on the wall.

It hurt.

God, it hurt.

To see the disregard, the obsession in his brother’s eyes and he wondered just how far Scott would go, how far over the line he would step to reach his goal.

Because he had just taken the first step,

Nature of Youth Crimes committed in Jamaica

Nature of Youth Crimes committed in Jamaica  

Based on the Observer, in 2017, police arrested 1,400 children for serious crimes in the last two years. This alarming statistic was outlined by the Head of Police Area One, Assistant Commissioner Donovan Graham, he highlighted that a large number of children between the ages of 12 and 18 have been arrested for serious crimes in the last two years.

The nature of these crimes includes murder, shooting, rape, robbery, larceny, and aggravated assault. Donovan Graham outlined that between September 2015 and the end of September this year (2017), 192 children were arrested for murder, 232 for rape, 152 arrested for shooting, 364 arrested for robbery, and 256 were arrested for breaking and entering. Boys accounted for almost all of the crimes (Hines, 2017).

According to data compiled by the Jamaica Constabulary Force Statistics and Information Management Unit, in 2017, 78 teenagers were arrested for shooting, 148 were arrested for illegal possession of firearm; this included three girls, 63 for robbery with aggravation, and a 15-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly raping a woman at gunpoint.

Deviant Youths current trends and future implication on Jamaica

Based on the United Nation Development Programme report (UNDP) 2012, Jamaica has the highest number of youths convicted of crime in the region. It is understood that Jamaica spend more than US$529 million (J$46.5 billion) annually as a direct public and private cost to fight youth crime. This ridiculous amount of money has been rerouted from the Jamaica people, and from the sectors in Jamaica to fight crime being carried out by youths. Annually, Jamaica loses US$4.3 million in potential investment, with a further loss of US$95 million, which would have flown directly into the Jamaican tourism industry simply because of youth crime fighting. Based on the UNDP, youth crime cost the country 3.21 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) (UNDP, 2013). This report was carried out in 2012, it is 2020 now, and crime hasn’t gone down, therefore, we can only imagine how much youth crime prevention is costing Jamaica currently.

 Based on the Overseas Security Advisory Council, in 2017, Jamaica’s homicide rate was 56 per 100,000; in 2018, the homicide rate dropped to 47 per 100,000, but remains three times higher than the average for Latin America and the Caribbean. Alongside that, Forbes Magazine placed Jamaica as the third most threatening place for women travellers in 2017 (OSAC, 2019). The International Monetary Fund (IMF) currently identify crime as the number one roadblock to economic growth in Jamaica. Due to this, In January 2018, the Government of Jamaica (GoJ) established a States of Emergency (SOE) and Zones of Special Operations (ZOSOs) for several parishes including the Kingston Metropolitan Area and the St. James parish. The SOEs and two ZOSOs lowered the murder rate by 22%, because of the steep reduction in murders in St. James. However, the SOE became stationed in the end of January 2019, after Jamaica’s Parliament did not approve its extension (OSAC, 2019).

What are the current trends that causes Youth criminality in Jamaica?

·         According to Dr Elizabeth Ward, medical epidemiologist and executive director of the Violence Prevention Alliance (VPA), numerous children are being lured into a life of crime way before their brains have had a chance to fully develop, and that is one of the reasons children feature as perpetrators and among those being murdered in Jamaica (Robinson, 2018). DR. Ward outlined that “When we do brain scans of these children who are exposed to multiple traumas, we see that their brain architecture is different…” (Robinson, 2018). DR Ward purported that children, who live in high-trauma environments, become mentally numb to pain and negative sanctions over time. This will allow them to carry out malicious criminal actions.

·         Due to the lack of family-parent support and involvement, there is little to no love in the homes of these Youths, As a result, youths find it hard to turn a blind eye to older gangsters who offer them a sense of belonging and purpose through criminality. To support this statement, Psychologist Dr Pearnel Bell highlighted that the family cannot be disorganized and broken up from youngsters because this will make it easier for youngster to become lured into crime. She said "Gangs are formed because these children are seeking a family. It is one of the biggest push factors. Oftentimes, they are from homes where they don't have a sense of belonging, so they seek out peers that make them feel like they belong" (Robinson, 2018).

·         . The effects of being raised in a single-parent home can cause many deficiencies in children. In Comparison to families of the same race and similar incomes, children from broken and single-parent homes are three times more likely to end up in jail by the time they are age 30 than that of children raised in married families (Knight, 2015). The effects of single parent-ness in most cases generate poverty in homes which pressures and places strain and stressors on children which in the same token, leads to deviant like behaviours and eventual criminality. Also, the effect of fatherlessness has been shown to have significant effect on children. It is known that ‘it takes the village to raise a child,’ and an impactful component of a village as always and will always be the father. The absence of fathers erode the impact of a guiding foundation to children especially young men, and disadvantageously, some youth will search for this guiding framework in other places like the older community gang members.

Can Humor Help You Tackle the SAT? A Statistical Analysis of Testing Performance

High schools across the nation encourage mental health initiatives to promote emotional stability during standardized testing. In these efforts, humor has been shown to minimize stress. To further test the effects of humor, this project measured the effect of humor on mock SAT performance by high school students. Eleven students, aged 16-18, took mini SAT tests before and after watching a video. The first group of eight students saw a humorous video. A smaller group of three students saw a boring video instead to validate humor as being the cause for change in the initial group. The mean of the average test scores increased a large 33% after the funny video, and only 6% after the boring video (highly significant, student t test: t(8)=3.21). A 33% increase is equivalent to gaining 528 points on the SAT.  This shows a dramatic benefit in test performance due to the funny video intervention. We don’t know the mechanism by which humor helped. The comedian John Cleese has claimed that humor enables creativity. High schools have turned to humor to relieve stress. High school suicide rates are at record levels, so stress reduction would be an important effect to study further. A future study might examine whether people can induce the effects seen here on their own, perhaps by remembering a joke.

Social media revolutionising business advertising.

Over the past few years, ‘Influencers’ have taken social media platforms by storm, flooding our newsfeeds with content promoting products and brands to the public.

Through the growth of social media, a business platform has been developed that allows for companies to reach a wider audience that is cheaper than other traditional forms of advertisement.

Social media coordinator, content creator and director, Adelaide Hawkins, says that most businesses use social media as a cheap selling platform to access a larger audience.

“There are billboards, newspapers and TV advertisements, but they are so expensive. Social media is a free way of advertising and marketing. It’s created this world where anyone can promote themselves for free,” Hawkins said.  

In terms of promoting brands and companies, ‘influencers’ provide an additional, more specific target demographic, based on what product or service is being advertised.

An ‘influencer’ refers to someone with a large following, usually due to the kind of content that they share or the way that they interact with their following.

“Influencers are so influential because you think you know them, so you trust them, and then when an influencer creates or promotes a product, their supporters want to buy the same product based off of that connection,” said Hawkins.

In an article called ‘this is how much instagram influencers really cost’, Lexi Carbone says that instagram influencer partnerships are the best performing platform for companies to have a widespread effect amongst audiences with an average of 3.21% engagement rate, compared to only 1.5% through all social networks.

“On Instagram in the last year and a half, its turned into this world where everyone is just interacting and it’s kind of like ‘the’ place to go now to promote things because it’s what most people use now-days,” Hawkins said.

Lisa Stark, chief operating officer of marketing and digital strategy, says that the influencer approach to business and product promotion is widely popular due to being in style and attractive to the public.

“Influencers can increase audience awareness or create demand for a product or service by displaying it and making it ‘cool,’ or ‘desirable’ or the ‘next trend’. This drives customers to buy or investigate,” Stark said.

According to influencer marketing hub, the influencer marketing approach is estimated to become an eight-billion-dollar industry by the end of 2020. This kind of business approach is now close to replacing traditional forms of advertising on social media.  

Although this rapid progression of social media use as a marketing platform benefits companies greatly when reaching a wider audience, it can also cause serious issues in the spread of negative information.

Stark says that through the use of social media, companies and brands can benefit a great deal, however there is always a possibility of risk if negative reviews and comments circulate online.

“In a negative sense, social media is also dangerous for a business. If a company has an inferior product or a newsworthy event, literally thousands of people can find out in minutes. Sales can plummet because a company is caught cheating workers or causing an environmental problem. That, or the product does not live up to expectations,” Stark said.

Despite the risks involved, social media advertising has been proven to assist in reaching out to a larger population, especially with smaller companies.

More than 50 million small businesses now use social media as a platform to reach their customers, with the number increasing daily.

71% of customers who have had a good experience with a brand on social media, are more than likely to recommend the company to their friends and family. This gives businesses further promotion.

For smaller companies who may not be able to afford other forms of advertising, consumers recommending their products to others would be extremely valuable.

“For a small business, social media posts definitely have a major impact as it’s a really cheap form of getting your product ‘out there’ generally to a wider audience. If they then have happy customers, they would usually go and promote the product further,” said Stark.  

The inclusion of social media into business strategies, relies heavily on the trending apps and websites. This means that there will most likely be a drop in social media marketing, in the years to come.

“Social media and influencers will have a place until the ‘next big thing’. Influencers will need to build a lot more substance to continue to have big impact, and to continue being successful in that area,” said Stark.

Although eventually becoming out-dated, the industry is currently widely popular and developing rapidly, with more companies and people using social media platforms on the daily.
