just saw a bunch of posts about netflix's "3 body problem" reblogged on my dash, so a friendly reminder that the chinese adaptation, which has entered multiple lists of best c-dramas in 2023, is available for free on youtube with engsub & also on tencent/wetv app (where' i'm currently watching to spite d&d lol).
eta: i probably should have added this a while back; i didn't check the notes until recently. but i have been told by someone in the replies that there are only 2 of 30 episodes available on youtube now. idk when this change happened. as i mentioned above, i watched the drama on my local wetv app for free. however, i'm aware that the app in other countries may have different rules or w/e. so, yeah, please be kindly informed.

It's really interesting to watch Netflix 3 body and compare it to China's 3 body last year. Just in terms of film analysis, not even getting into the cultural and political changes.

Chinese Tencent version: In the cold mountains of painful labor they shared knowledge and food, nurturing fondness and trust despite their circumstances.
British Netflix version: In the cold mountains of painful labor they shared some ideas ig, held hands, and started making out in a tent. This clearly shows how they form a genuine trusting bond despite their circumstances.

Ok so I'm on ep 14 of tencent 3 Body and ok. I see ppl saying that the Netflix version was better because it showed the cultural Revolution and it's barely a blip in the Chinese one. And after seeing how tencent did it all I can think is wtf at these ppl. The chinese version does leave out the visual of her dad dying so you can have whatever feeling you want on that, however, it makes it really clear that what she went through was horrible. Ppl mention her dad in hushed voices, and ppl reference that she went through violence.
Past that tho is at the working camp I actually feel is much stronger than Netflix. You see a person who is broken down and just doing what she needs to do. Then she meets Bai Mulin and you can actually see the warmth and some hope return to her. This is way better than the Netflix version!! And then when she is called to the higher ups you even see her superior caring about her?!! It's only after the meeting when the atmosphere is going against her that he also switches. So it's like Bai Mulin is a big betrayal but also get supervisor also being like that just shows the environment they're in, so when older Ye Wenjie says she doesn't blame them, you can understand because if they didn't behave that way then they would've been taken away. Obv she's still upset by it but unfortunately she can also understand. It's heartbreaking! This happens in like 5 min in the Netflix version, pls. But at least you get to see her dad die.
Also omg older Ye Wenjie is already killing it when you first meet her, like there's a sort of mystery to her that you do not get in the Netflix version when you first meet her. Already better! Omg.
I will say the Chinese version is slower and probably could've been edited better here and there but I'm still enjoying it way more than the Netflix version. You really feel for Ye Wenjie more. Also there's just more science and philosophies going on here.
If you really need to watch her dad die you can literally start with the Netflix version since that's what it starts with and then after that scene just switch on over to China but know you have to wait until ep 10 for her story to begin.

Three Bottles Problem
The first scene follows the English translation's approach of putting the cultural revolution scene first, but then it turns that scene into... suffering porn?
You didn't have to do that, Netflix. It's already a very heavy scene: Ye Wenjie (叶文洁) is already going through some serious trauma in the original version of this scene. And the discussion between her father and mother is not that complex, it's a pretty straightforward matter of her father saying "it was smart of you to start using Chinese names for western scientific concepts, since you saw the cultural revolution was about to start".
The fact that this scene has been turned into a conversation about "God" (who is the natural enemy of communism, according to this show (as opposed to fascists, who are actually the natural enemy of communism)) makes the entire thing suspect immediately.
Let's move on: maybe the carelessness about history is a small oversight in an otherwise good show, right? Oh, the scientists are literally seeing magical numbers in their vision, instead of just seeing a countdown printed on photographs? Oh, I see, okay. That means the "scientific" explanation of what is happening is going to be some deeply meaningless mumbo jumbo. There's no way around that now. They've written themselves into a corner immediately. Which just means they don't care about writing themselves into these types of corners.
18 minutes into the first episode of this show and I've already realized that this is just going to be a parade of nonsensical set pieces with expensive VFX.

this may just be me going into overanalysis mode but i feel like the choreography of spellcasting can tell you so much about a magic user. a snap of the fingers, for example, implies confidence, even arrogance, while hands thrust out and straining to the fingertips suggests desperation, throwing one's whole body into the spell as though hoping the physical effort will make a difference. rapid, jerky body language tells you that a spellcaster is passionate and reckless, while graceful, fluid movements demonstrate calm and concentration. some magic users may choose to stomp their feet or clap their hands when casting, channeling power through percussive motion, whilst others may see magic as a tool separate from the self, and focus it through objects like a wand or staff. a new spellcaster just coming into their power may be tentative and slow, but a practiced study of magic will be able to rely on muscle memory to guide them.

(me on a first date) and what do you think of the inherent intimacy of surgery? have you considered the love someone must have to put their hands under your skin and hold the most grotesque parts of you and put them back together nicely? is anyone really closer to you than that? we all get uh a little enamored on the surgery table don't we haha. wait come back

me: talking about the chinese adaptation of the three-body problem as a better alternative to the anglicized netflix's version.
someone: the cdrama version is also bad because it treats its viewers as dumb!
me, who is dumb and grateful for the way they explain the science:

One thing I’ve noticed about people in or entering their 30s is they don’t make as many compromises anymore. If someone doesn’t meet them halfway, is not up to standard, is just not where they’re needed to be, they’re just like “ok cool” and they move on from the person. Which is not to say they’re less empathetic or understanding, but more that they have learned that time is their most prized possession and they’re not willing to make massive compromises on it. They are not obsessed w the idea of fixing someone (bc the concept of fixing a person doesn’t really exist). They simply move on to someone who is up to par. I want that. I want to always move w the awareness that time is my most priceless belonging and I can never buy it back. Ever. So I have to use it wisely
