rileys whole deal in season 5 is so annoying (like. hes annoying all the time but im getting specific here) cause its like. of course you're going crazy feeling like she doesn't love you enough and she's not touchable enough for you, your problem is that she has a life and you don't. you're not like a real character you're not a person, you have nothing outside of her. buffy has school and a job/calling and her family and friends. last season riley had school and a job and friends and now he literally just has her. this is not good for anyone i mean no one would feel sane or healthy in that situation. what he needs is hobbies. he needs to develop some interests that aren't his girlfriend. but instead of doing that he decides to get super toxic and pissed off at buffy that he's not the only thing that exists in the world to her while she's dealing with shit that is way bigger than him (like the threat of glory and, oh yeah, her mom slowly dying). and everyone keeps telling him, you're so good for buffy, it's so nice how she's not miserable with you :) and hes like yeah that's not good enough i wish she was miserable. dawn literally tells him about how when buffy was with angel she was crying all the time but with riley she doesnt have to worry and riley takes it sooo personal and its like. mate thats just the difference between being 16 and 20 sometimes, like thats a good thing you should not want your girlfriend to be crying about you every day. anyway what im saying is nothing was ever going to save him from being super boring but their relationship might've survived if he had like picked up dnd or something. i don't know if buffy necessarily does need some monster in her man like she really does love a kind of pathetic damsel to protect but he really needed to be interested in something outside of her. literally anything just pick something.
