5/5/2024. Greetings, not from the Gare de Lyon but from my hospital bed yet again. This date is an anniversary I would rather forget, it is a year to the date since I was “blue lighted” to the hospital at Troyes, where the following day they gave me the news that my cancer had returned. However, a year down the line, although still receiving treatment, I am continuing to write my blog.
As you can imagine (or maybe you can’t) being confined to one room, looking out onto other parts of the hospital, there could be very little to report. However, as you will also know, family and friends keep in touch and so a part of my normality returns.
One of the comforting things about this hospital is that you can choose your own meals. The dietitian came to see me on Monday, she said don’t worry if I can’t eat the hot food as long as I am eating something she is pleased. I showed her “my stash” and she was impressed with what I had brought in. She is sending me extra’s too on my food tray.
Anie, has messaged sending photos of her garden, Monique too has been working in her garden and sent me photos. We have had strong winds and rain (apparently) and I am hoping that those budding cherries have clung onto the branches. I also hope that the wind hasn’t scattered the primulas, in their pots, far and wide around my garden. My American friends are back in Bar-sur-Aube and are waiting to give me a big greeting on my return. They had been back in the states for over a year now so it must be wonderful to return to their dream house in France. I know what it was like when I had four weeks away from my home last year, I am not ashamed to say, I cried as we approached Bar-sur-Aube.
One of my friends in the UK celebrated her 60th birthday at the end of April. Of course my card had been posted off in advance.
We have had the 1st May “jour férié” and people will be looking forward to 8th May “jour ferie”, celebrating Victory in Europe back in 1945. As my son informed me May is the month of holidays here in France.
Yesterday, my granddaughter had her birthday party at her Daddy’s house. Daddy, “The Photographer”, took some photos of her reading the card I had sent and opening her birthday present. I had a video call yesterday afternoon, it was wonderful, I was pretending to be asleep and my grandson was saying cock-a-doodle-do to wake me up. I saw the presents for the birthday girl. It was amazing and at one point the nurse came in to change the drip and my conversation continued with my grandson.
“The Jetsetter” took off for London on Thursday, stayed overnight at the airport and flew to Vancouver on Friday. This was something I had been thinking about doing before I was ill. Not to stay in Vancouver but to make my way to where my Great Uncle went to live back in early 1910’s. His life is something I would love to have more information on but there is no-one now still alive who can give me the information. I do know that he signed up in Victoria BC for World War 1 and was killed in France. I have visited his final resting place.
“The Trainee Solicitor” and the “The Reconnect Navigator” have had a relaxing end to the week. It’s good to recharge your batteries and although a week by a pool may appeal, sometimes it’s just as good to be at home. Of course they went to celebrate my granddaughters birthday too, I am sure she had a smile from ear to ear when she saw her Uncle.
It’s time for the music part of the blog again, I know that a lot of this music is so old but I do throw in “more recent” records like Maroon 5 last week.
This week however, they are still oldies I suppose. The first is from 1980 it’s by Sad Cafe and is “What Am I Gonna Do?”. I actually remember buying the album, having just returned from holiday, with spending money left over. I was in Darlington and saw the album “Sad Cafe Live in Concert”, so I bought it. Loved it so much and still do.
The second song is from Melanie C from 2003 and it’s “On The Horizon”. I loved her “Northern Star”Album and also the album “Reason” from which this song is taken.
So Saturday and Sunday have been days without treatment and Monday is the day of my CAR-T cell treatment. It’s a big day but hopefully for me just a day nearer going home.
I will still be in hospital next week, but as with this week, God Willing, I will be back next week.
Have a good week until then.

Bonjour tout le monde, oh how beautiful can winter be, this time I actually braved the cold to get this photo it was just too good to miss.
We have had “flocons de neige” , rain, cloud and sunshine but it has also been bitterly cold. Never mind the heating is on and I have been eating better so warm inside and out. I must be feeling better as I have baked, cheese scones, prepared roast dinners, cooked chilli and made a pan of soup.
The weather hasn’t stopped me going to do my shopping although the knitting has been pulling me back to continue with that.
My cleaner came twice this week but is away for the weekend so won’t be with me on Monday. With that in mind I decided to start the jigsaw my friend bought for my birthday. Wow it took me two hours to sort out the edge pieces and try to get those put together. I am sure it will take me until Wednesday to get it all finished so I think it’s a good idea that I have made food, just to be reheated, as the jigsaw will take all my time 😂.
It’s been a mixed emotions week, I was thinking of a friends and family, no longer with us, who would have celebrated birthday’s or who passed away at this time of year. Back to the here and now, it was Anie’s birthday on Friday. I couldn’t get in touch with her so she didn’t get her present until Saturday, fortunately the gerbera I bought on Thursday had remained wonderfully fresh in the car. She invited me for tea and gateau and we had a great time catching up and looking at photos of her holiday in Indonesia. I had made soup so took some for her, along with a couple of mince tarts, coconut slice and stuffed dates. She would like the recipe for the coconut slice so I will send it to her.
Now it’s the music section of the blog and this first record is back to the 1960’s. It’s “Beggin’” by Frankie Valli and The four Seasons, released in 1967. The next song , I would have said is more “up to date”, but as it is actually 23 years old this year I guess it’s still “old” to a lot of people. It is “Whenever, Wherever” by Shakira released in 2001. As someone once wrote “The rhythm of life is a powerful beat, puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet”. Let’s hope that’s what these songs do for you each week!
Monique messaged to say she is in hospital, her white blood cell count was very low and she is still in the emergency ward, they will transfer her to haematology on Monday. I am messaging her to keep her spirits up.
“The Photographer” was at Scarborough AFC match on Saturday doing his “voluntary” job. Apparently it was freezing cold and by half time he couldn’t feel his fingers. He did however manage to get some great photos.
“The Trainee Solicitor” has had another busy week (a bit like his mother 😉) plus he had the worst luck in that he had an overflowing toilet (fortunately from the cistern). It’s still a nuisance, I hate leaking water as it can do so much damage! Anyway “Superdad” is hopefully going over today with a new plunger and will fit it, so that the toilet is working again. Another thing he could have done without I am sure!
“The Ex-Graduate” went to take her details to the new job she is due to start around the end of February. She had been out to buy some new work clothes and is looking forward to this new phase of her life. I remember starting my first job, £15 per week, £13 of that into my hand and I thought I was rich! When I left that job nine months later to go to a job that paid £22 (gross) per week I really thought I had arrived 😂.
My grandchildren are with their Mummy this weekend so no “surprise” FaceTime calls.
I haven’t heard from my friends in Bristol and I think once the jigsaw is finished 🙈 I will have to get in touch.
Now it is time for me to have another hot drink and get myself all ready to ………. continue with the jigsaw 😂😂.
It is only 2c here so wherever you are I hope it is warmer than this.
The photo below shows new apartments built at the back of one of the 12th century churches we have in town.
Bon dimanche!

Brrrrr what a cold week it has been or was it just because I was up early in the morning for the journey to the hospital? Whatever the reason, I don’t like it! . However, this morning the sun is shining, I was thinking of heading out early for a walk BUT a quick check of Météo informed me that it is 1c out there and that the highest temperature for today is 5c. Think I will just snuggle up under a blanket and look at the sunshine through the window 😂.
So the first week of treatment is over and done with, just another two and a half weeks to go
I have enjoyed the journey to Troyes, catching sight of the grues (cranes) as they continued on their migration. One day there were even cigognes (storks) feeding in a field.
Last Sunday was a gorgeous day and I took advantage of it with a lovely walk. The sun shone and it was quite warm (10c). Perfect for the photos by the river and also around town.
Have I been resting up this week? Well most afternoons, yes, but on a morning when I returned from hospital I have been out shopping, rearranging appointments and preparing and cooking meals. My cleaner hasn’t been 😩 but she is coming for two hours next week.
Thanks to all my family and friends ( from all around the world) who have been sending love during this time. Your support has helped me remain positive.
Pauline messaged to say she is feeling better and so we will meet up (at some point).
I visited my “sisters” at the knitting workshop as I had to take the knitted items ready for the sale. One pair of fingerless gloves were snapped up straight away!
Monique has still been coughing after her bout of bronchitis, she was going to visit me yesterday but messaged on Friday to say her neighbour (who she has been helping because they were unwell) has been taken to hospital with Covid!. So fearful that she may be positive or even a carrier, decided not to put me at risk.
Anie came to see me on Tuesday evening bearing homemade gifts. She told me she is going to stay with her son in Indonesia for Xmas. She will be home in time for her birthday on the 19 January, so I think I will ask her for lunch that day and give her birthday and Xmas presents together.
I bought two Xmas cactus, one which looks white or cream and the other a magenta colour. I thought I would give Anie the magenta coloured one as part of her Xmas present. Both plants had lots of buds on but the magenta one has some flowers very close to opening, I may end up keeping both plants for myself 😂.
An English friend (lives in France) is celebrating her birthday today 🥳🥳. I hope she likes the present I sent her. It is difficult to know what to buy. I saw two things I would have sent her so hopefully the second item will do for next years birthday.
As we hurtle towards Xmas I have been snapping up boxes of chocolates, biscuits, stollen and pates de fruits, these are for the nurses who have visited me at home since June, the taxi companies who have coped with my French and sorted vehicles for me, the cleaner (who has done a great job) and my friends. I may need to go and buy some more but once these are wrapped I will be in a better position to see who else I need presents for. I would like to think that I can get them all wrapped up this afternoon.
Now it’s time for my choice of records, this is for “The Trainee Solicitor” who I think is “guardian” of my CD by this artist 😉. The song is from 2005 and it’s “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter.
The next record dates back to 1982 but the more famous version is the re-worked 1987 hit, it is “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake. I like to include artists local to where I lived in the UK and David Coverdale was born in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, a mere three miles from where I lived.
“The Daddy” was due to be THE photographer for Scarborough AFC match yesterday, unfortunately he had tummy troubles Friday into Saturday morning and was unable to attend. I hope you are feeling better this morning.
“The Trainee Solicitor” and “The Ex-Graduate” had a great night on Thursday evening at Luke Combs UK but today they are in need of cheering up, so it’s off for breakfast and hopefully a read of the blog which should cheer them both up 😉.
I really want to apologise to the eagle eyed amongst you who may have noticed that I have listed “The Letter” by the Box Tops twice! Well it is a great song and it’s been around for 56 years 😱 really that long!
Now it’s time for me to bid you all adieu. Have a great week until I “see” you again next week.

It has been a cool damp week but this morning the temperature is in double figures so it’s warmer than it has been for a few days.
Unfortunately last evening, with the rain falling, it was wet both inside and out as the rain was coming through my dining room ceiling yet again. I am praying for some dry weather so that the couvreur (roofer) can come to repair the flashing and 🤞put a stop to the problem once and for all.
What a Saturday I had! Monique came to visit, having had bronchitis she had stayed away not wishing to pass on her germs. She arrived with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, white and green chrysanthemums, red gerbera and beautiful green foliage. We had a lovely two hours catching up and she asked if I had heard from Jony (the Syrian man who I met on the French course). I hadn’t contacted him since January and I decided to send him a message. We had a lovely exchange of messages and have agreed to meet up, in Paris, for a coffee. Of course that is after I have had my diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccines again! When I woke this morning, I remembered that around this time it would be Jony’s birthday so sent him a message, he has just replied saying he was 50 last Monday 😊.
I received a call from the hospital, not the call I was expecting, but this one was very welcome. I was asked to go to the hospital the following day to have the PICC line removed from my arm. Now I know this tube had to go from my arm into my chest but I hadn’t expected it to be quite as long as it was! Anyway out it came, totally painless, and I lost this appendage which had been with me for six months 😳. While at the hospital I mentioned to the doctor that I hadn’t had a call about the radiotherapy. Apparently, they had had a problem with the equipment but he rang through and was told I would have a call that week. Sure enough Friday they rang me and I start the treatment on Monday at 8:30a.m. That’s an early start for at least three days I know of next week, anyway it’s a start, I look forward to ticking off those 18 days 😊.
This weeks look at songs which mean something to me, are a bit more up to date, well if you can class 20 years old as being up to date although there is a newer one too, just 11 years old 😂😂. At one time I had the CD’s that these songs were taken from but son’s who borrowed them from me, somehow failed to return them and most possibly have “mislaid” them means that I am no longer in possession of the CD’s. Which is a shame as in the case of the first one, there are so many songs I could have chosen, thanks to the songwriters, usually the unsung heroes behind the chart toppers.
So first is “Positively Somewhere” from the album Reason by Melanie C released in 2003.
The next song is “Drive By” by Train from the album California 37 released in 2012.
As always I hope you like my choice of songs, if you do, why not listen to the albums.
My gorgeous grandchildren are with “The Daddy” again this weekend. Today they are going to a birthday party, a new friend “Rory” has his birthday and the children are so excited about it. There is going to be a bouncy castle and all the other delights for children now. Have fun everyone.
“The Trainee Solicitor” had some good news at the end of the week, it looks as if he is going to get his own office and his own files to manage, which will really boost his training. He has been quite stressed lately, not knowing which hat to don, receptionist, secretary, solicitor, firefighter, tea boy (ok the last one was a fib) but you get the idea. It looks as if he will have a clear idea of his role and will be dealing from start to finish on his own files.
“The Ex-Graduate” had to deal with a day at work with hardly any customers, so that involved a lot of back breaking cleaning jobs to be done! Days off in the colder damp weather meant curling up with a book, not a bad idea there girl, although I am busy stitching up items for the Christmas Sale.
I have almost finished writing the Christmas cards so then it will just be a trip to the post office to send them off. I made a dozen mince pies for the freezer, ever hopeful I can eat one or two over Christmas. The meat for today is in the slow cooker and I am looking forward to pork, potatoes, carrots and courgettes. I will have to make sure I am not hungry this evening as I was told not to eat anything in the morning before my treatment 😩.
Now I really must get these items stitched up and ready to pass on to Claudine (who has been standing in for me at the knitting group) then perhaps the last Xmas cards will be written and I can settle down with a book 😉.
The photos are the colours of autumn and the vines on the hillside in the village of Fontaine.
À bientôt!
