My 13 year old has been into nirvana. As I no longer have a vcr to play my vhs copy of 1991 the year punk broke I found a dvd on eBay. We watched it last weekend. It’s possibly better than it was watching now than it was back when I was in highschool.
It’s little time capsule of that time when people were feeling freer and before internet and social media to memorialize our actions forever. It stirs up those nostalgia feelings.
We had a great time watching it and my daughter was blown away by sonic youth “why weren’t they as big as nirvana?” And she added them to her Spotify.

I've wondered, if there was a teenage girl in 1990 who was a teenybopper cheerleader that listened to hair metal, new jack swing like Bel Biv Devoe, and pop stars like Madonna, Wilson Phillips, Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Dayne and Paula Abdul, how that teenybopper girl would feel about Sonic Youth's "Goo" era music if they heard it since "Goo" came out around the same time those artists were popular and SY also played on MTV?
Some of Sonic Youth's "Goo" era songs were catchy, radio friendly and don't sound that much different than some of the music she enjoyed in the past and now.
I've also wondered what a teenybopper girl in the 1980's who got her music tastes from MTV and loved everything from pop music to hair metal would've thought of MTV's "120 Minutes" in the late 80's and early 90's, because that was music that was somewhat different from the rest of the music popular at that time.

Punk History Resources: Vol. 1
This is a compilation of resources found and recommended by various alternative bloggers, each of whom are credited for their contributions. This started because I was getting SO MANY asks about resources such as videos, books, and websites to use to learn about punk history. Admittedly, my own list isn't that long, so I thought it was best to reach out to some others and share their knowledge with everyone. So thank you again to everyone who helped out with this!!

"Lithium" is a song by the American rock band Nirvana, written by lead vocalist Kurt Cobain. It was released as a single from their second album Nevermind (1991), peaking at #64 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1992. It hit #11 in the UK, #1 in Finland and the top five in Ireland and Portugal.
In a 1992 interview, Cobain explained that the song was a fictionalized account of a man who "turned to religion as a last resort to keep himself alive" after the death of his girlfriend, "to keep him from suicide." Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad described its lyrics as "an update on Karl Marx's description of religion as the 'opiate of the masses.'"
The music video was directed by American filmmaker Kevin Kerslake, is a compilation of live footage from the band's October 31, 1991, concert at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, and from the unreleased film, 1991: The Year Punk Broke.

Sonic Youth - Little John's Farm, Reading, England, August 23, 1991
1991! Punk, it broke! Here, we've got Sonic Youth near the top of the bill at the Reading Festival ... a lineup that earned a lifetime's worth of bragging rights for attendees — mainly because they would've caught Nirvana right on the precipice, the bleeding edge! In just a few months, Cobain and co. would be well on their way to becoming the world's biggest band. Surprise!
And certainly, their afternoon set at Reading is very exciting. Bear witness to: a field full of headbangers hearing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time; Tony the Interpretive Dancer getting down like a clown; the Vaselines' Eugene Kelly popping up for a "Molly's Lips" duet; Kurt hurling himself into the drum kit like a madman, only to emerge seconds later waving to the crowd with a big goofy grin. Really, Nirvana just seem like an incredibly fun band here. The, er, doom and gloom was somewhere in the future, unknown and nameless.
Whatever, nevermind! We're not here to talk about Nirvana. We're here to talk about Sonic Youth, who had already had an eventful year. For one thing, they'd run the gauntlet across the States with Neil Young & Crazy Horse on the eardrum-shattering Weld tour. On those dates, they might not have been quite arena-ready. But at Little John's Farm, they sound perfectly at home in a larger setting, blasting off and digging in, offering up a rollicking and righteous set for our listening enjoyment (you can watch it, too).
The Goo stuff is kinetic and razor-sharp — I especially like the intense "Tunic," with the controls set for the heart of the abyss. "Eric's Trip" is a total rager, Ranaldo hanging on for dear life as Shelley goes nuts. We even get a few Dirty previews. This is a band operating at a very high level! The #SonicSummer rolls on!
Dudes, I can't find a tape of Iggy's evening-closing show ... but you can listen to Dino Jr from earlier in the day. That's pretty good, right?

August 20th, 1991
Club Sir Henry’s, Cork, Ireland.
Nirvana performed in support for Sonic Youth. The gig, taking place in front of a half-full venue, has gone on to secure a special place in Irish rock lore.
Included:
• The first live performance of ‘Lounge Act.’
• The first appearance of Kurt’s famous guitar, the Fender Jaguar 1965.
• The intro of ‘Negative Creep’ sung in falsetto and a false start to ‘Sliver.’
• Excerpts from the stage were shown in the film, “1991: The Year Punk Broke.”
• Performance of the then-unreleased 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.’

top films of the year!!!
tagged by @standardlovers <3333 who actually has like Film Opinions that don't revolve around how silly/sexy the films were but anyway here's my films...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
np tags for @themuseoftheviolets @stillagoodwitch @quillkiller @fxreflyes @star4daisy <3333
i’m also gonna do some comments like teddy did bc i never know how to shut up ever so…
1. Point Break (1991), the film of all films, i think i rewatched it like three times this year, its my favourite film of all time, i never shut up about it, it literally has it all - surfing, bank robbery, skydiving, keanu reeves, patrick swayze, an excessive amount of deaths, rampant homoeroticism etc etc
2. Mickey Blue Eyes (1999), another rewatch, another banger, hugh grant is his typical bumbling englishman but this time it involved the mafia!! which i love, and manslaughter and the fbi and it’s a bit ridiculous which, of course, is a necessity
3. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), i said it on my letterboxd and i’ll say it again - there is NOTHING like the love between a man and his razor blades, also helena bonham carter is SO sexy as always and there’s a lot of fun murder, my only note would be that they don’t sing the ballad of sweeney todd, which is clearly the best song from the musical, but otherwise very enjoyable
4. My Own Private Idaho (1991), what was in the water for keanu in 1991?? bc honestly this film is incredible, the campfire scene broke me into pieces, humpty dumpty style, and i’m still not back together again, also there are excellent insults in this eg. you starfish, you vile punk etc so i loved it a lot, and river phoenix is brilliant, are you kidding me??
5. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), another keanu but this one is Overtly silly rather than just being silly by association (all keanu films are silly bc he’s a lovably awful actor but this one takes the cake), literally party on dudes like be excellent to each other, what more do you want me to say??
6. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), ohhh my god guys idk how i’d never watched this before but honestly just incredible, so so so SO good, my friends told me that i give riff-raff vibes which… i’ve chosen to take as a compliment bc after all… it’s astounding… time is fleeeting (picture me bursting into a choreographed musical number)
7. Dangerous Liaisons (1988), a banger, i watched cruel intentions like years ago but this is dare i say it… better??? there’s just something about a period drama that elevates everything, keanu was very sweet, i loved when he was all covered in blood and bedraggled, and just in general i love when women are evil and malicious
8. A Knight’s Tale (2001), this film was an experience… i do think it should’ve just been about the bros going on an adventure and doing a spot of jousting instead of having that romance plot which was kinda eh, but the soundtrack fucks and there were generally excellent vibes and heath ledger was fantastic
anyway that’s that i guess!!!
honourable mention for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) bc god that film goes so hard, and also But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) bc like come on now, need i say more??
