The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey, the longest suspension bridge in the world, has opened, providing a quick six-minute commute across the Dardanelles Strait.
The bridge is significant both symbolically and engineering-wise, with a total length of 15,118 feet and a longest span of 6,637 feet. The 1915 Çanakkale bridge cost €2.5 billion to construct.
In the future, engineers may need to explore new designs for even longer bridges, such as a hybrid design combining suspension and cable-stayed bridge types.

Top 10 Longest Bridges in The World
Bridges have been around since the dawn of civilization and take multiple sizes and forms, consisting of a variety of materials. Some are taller, some are prettier, and some are simply spectacular, but which is the longest bridge in the world? The longest bridge in the world is located in China, as well as many other record-breaking structures.
Longest Bridge Over Water The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, also known as the Qingdao Haiwan Bridge. Its construction finished in 2011 at the Shandong Peninsula. The bridge got the award because of covering 26,4 miles. It has 5,200 pillars supporting it and about 450.000 tons of steel and 2,3 million cubic yards of concrete were used for its construction. It was designed to tolerate earthquakes, typhoons and even with the impact of a ship of up to 300,000 tons.
The Longest Bridge on Land The longest bridge in the world is the Dayang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China. The bridge is part of a high-speed railway system and has a length of 104 miles. It was inaugurated in 2011 and built-in just for years thanks to the work of 10,000 workers and crosses rice paddies, the Yangtze River Delta and the Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou. The train that goes through the bridge runs at 190 miles per hour, covering 24 stations. The line connects Beijing with Shanghai in less than five hours. More than 40 trains per day use the line, passing through the Dayang-Kunshan Grand Bridge.
The Tallest Bridge Length isn’t the single measure that can make a bridge impressive. The tallest one in the world, meaning the height of the structure’s tallest point, is the Milau Viaduct in Aveyron, France, considered a masterpiece of engineering for many reasons. It’s a stayed-cable bridge with a length of 1.5 miles across the Tarn River Valley. The expressway lanes reach 890 feet at their highest point, but the structure actually towers another 235 feet above for a total height of 1,125 feet. Due to its design, the bridge received many awards such as the Outstanding Structure Award and the Environmental Design and Architecture Award.
The Longest Suspension Bridge The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge has reached completion in Turkey with a span of 6,637 feet becoming the longest suspension bridge in the world. Open to traffic over the Dardanelles waterway, the massive structure was created by consulting group COWI for contractor DLSY to connect Turkey’s European and Asian shores. The bridge, named after the year of an important Ottoman naval victory against the British and the French during World War one, takes the title of the world’s longest suspension bridge from the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan, which has a 6,535 feet long span. The clearance between the water and the deck was engineered to accommodate high-stacked container ships and cruise ships that need to pass under it.
The Longest Movable Bridge Usually, when you think of a bridge the image that comes to mind is a fixed one, with no movement and staying in the same place until it’s demolished. But that’s not always the case thanks to the movable bridges, which can open to let boats pass through. There’s one that stands out for being the longest: the Broadway Bridge in Portland, Oregon. The bridge opened in 1913, which a new approach added in 1927, and has a length of 1,613 feet. Its opening can take up to 20 minutes, which is more than the average of other movable bridges.
The Longest Arch Bridge Located in the city of Shanghai, the Shangai Lupu Bridge is the longest arch bridge in the world. It crosses the Huangpu River and joins the Luwan and Pudong districts with a total length of 13,000 feet. It was inaugurated in 2003 and cost $300 million. After climbing about 300 steps to the top, you can reach an observation platform above the river that offers some of the best views of the city. It’s one of the tourism highlights in the area.
The Highest Bridge Reaching the record for the tallest bridge is quite a significant achievement, but there are others to consider. For example, the highest bridge in the world, which means the length between the span of the bridge and the lowest point on the ground. The bridge to break that record is the Duge bridge, also known as Beipanjiang Bridge Duge. It’s located in Guizhou, China and connects the cities of Hangzhou and Ruili, floating over 1,854 feet above the ground. Construction began in 2011 and was quite difficult due to the high winds and mountains in the area, finishing in 2014.
Other Notable Bridges
India’s Living Roots Bridges. When visiting India, you can see living root bridges, which uses the century-old practice of training fig trees to grow into bridges. Locals manipulate the roots of the trees as they grow and push them together, so to make walkways and river crossings. The process can take up to 15 years and is usually done with fig trees. Examples can be found in many villages of the West Jaintia Hills district and East Khasi Hills district, such as Shnongpdeng and Nongbareh.
Lucky Knot Bridge. Located in the city of Changsha in China, the Lucky Knot Bridge was developed by the China-based Next Architects and inaugurated in 2017. It’s inspired in the Mobius ring, which is a ring that twists, and knotting, folk art from China that uses knots to create different shapes. The bridge crosses the Dragon King Harbor River and goes more than 600 feet in length.
Eshima Ohashi Bridge. Going to the bridge feels like going into a roller coaster, but it’s actually an optical illusion. The structure became an internet hit after being completed in 2004, as images made the bridge’s grade look steeper than what they actually are. It was built over the Nakaumi lake in Japan with iron and steel and it’s a major tourist attraction in the area.

At 15,118 Feet Across, This New Suspension Bridge Is The Longest In The World
Explaining the incredible engineering behind the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge.
— By Sarah Wells | March 27, 2022 | PopSci.Com
Tumblr media

On a good day, commuters traveling between the city of Lapseki on Turkey’s Asian side and the city of Sütlüce on its European side could expect a ferry ride that takes at least an hour and half across the Dardanelles Strait to reach their final destination. On some days, when the ferries are particularly crowded, this commute could take up to five hours.
Now, thanks to the opening of a new suspension bridge across the strait this month, travelers can zip across this geographic divide in just six minutes flat. Dubbed the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge in reference to 1915 battle fought at the strait during WWI, this structure currently holds the world record for the longest suspension bridge in the world as measured by the distance between its two towers.
The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge is charged with both symbolic and engineering significance. Here’s how it stacks up, by the numbers.
15,118 Feet Across
When it comes to the length of a suspension bridge, there are two main numbers to keep in mind: the total length of the bridge and the longest span of its suspension. In this case, the Turkish bridge is 15,118 feet along its total length. Prior to the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge being built, the suspension bridge with the longest span and total length in the world was the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. It connects the islands of Honshu and Awaji with a total length of just under 13,000 feet and a longest span of 6,532 feet.
In addition to beating the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in total length, the 1915 Çanakkale bridge also beats it in longest span with a distance between towers of 6,637 feet. In meters (2,023), this length is also meant to commemorate 2023 as Turkey’s 100-year anniversary after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.
Brian Brenner, a professor at Tufts University who researches the structural engineering of bridges, says that when it comes to what type of bridge design to choose to cross these great lengths, it’s no surprise that both Turkey and Japan opted for a suspension bridge.
“Suspension bridges are the structural type that provide for the longest spans,” he says by email. “A suspension bridge can often be built over bodies of water with active marine traffic in a way that limits impact to boating below during construction, which is an advantage.”
When building over water ways, Brenner says that part of the advantage of having a suspension bridge is that it needs fewer structural posts to dig into either hard material like rock or deep on a waterway’s floor.
They’re also just iconic, he adds. After all, can you picture San Francisco without imagining the Golden Gate Bridge suspended over San Francisco Bay?
318 Meters High
In line with other symbolic elements of the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, the height of its towers are no different. This height—318 meters high, or roughly 1,043 feet—is meant to represent the date, March 18, which is not only the day the bridge opened but also marks the day on which Turkey remembers naval losses at Gallipoli during WWI.
However, the height of the tower also has engineering significance as well, Brenner says.
“As the span gets longer, the forces and dimensions of the bridge increase,” Brenner says. “So the towers need to be taller to support the cables.”
2.5 Billion Euros
With great height and length also comes great cost, at least for the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge. Originally proposed in 2017, the construction of this bridge has cost €2.5 billion, or roughly $2.7 billion, and was carried out by both Turkish and South Korean companies. According to Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the cost to cross the bridge will be 200 Turkish Lira, or a little under $14.
While the construction of the bridge wasn’t cheap, Erdoğan has said that he expects a big return on investment when it comes to fuel consumption saved by crossing the strait more efficiently – as much as €415 million or $458 million euros saved per year, according to Erdoğan.
Beyond 6,637 Feet
The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge may currently hold the world record for longest suspension bridge, but Brenner says it shouldn’t necessarily rest on its laurels. The Strait of Messina Bridge proposed in 2009 to connect mainland Italy with the island of Sicily would out-span the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge by nearly double. However, the Italian bridge project has met many snags along the way and doesn’t currently have a projected completion date.
Regardless of who wears the crown next, Brenner says that future suspension bridges attempting to span further distances may need a new design to limit their susceptibility to risk factors like wind.
“It may be that engineers are starting to approach the limit for span length for a traditional suspension bridge, such as what has been designed for the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and other suspension bridges,” he says. However, he notes that many engineers are looking into modified shapes and structural arrangements.
One alternative on the table is something called a “hybrid” design, Brenner says, which aims to combine suspension and cable-stayed bridge types. Sturdier than suspension alone, a solution like this may be the answer to building even longer bridges in the future.
