What makes Gallifrey One so special? What makes it the hot ticket for Whovians and DWeeks? We are going to give you a general overview about what Gallifrey One is, what you can expect there and tips on how to get your hands on these hard to get tickets!

Gallifrey One is the world’s largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who fan convention. It is a fully non-profit event founded in 1989 by active fans in local Los Angeles science fiction fandom. Gallifrey One boasts some of the best Doctor Who celebrity guests while still maintaining its small con feel. This convention is completely fan run. It features one of kind panels, guest from all walks of science fiction and the non fiction science community, not just the Doctor Who universe. Taking place every February over Presidents’ Day Weekend at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel, this con is an experience not to be missed.

2018 Highlights: 

Gally (as it is often called) is one of those cons that have a jammed packed schedule. Programming goes from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm. And even after there are after parties, screenings, dances, masquerades, karaoke events and so much more. There is probably way more that went on at the 2018 event than I could possibly list. Outside the Con: 

The convention is held at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel. It is just steps from LAX international airport. There are plenty of hotels in the area, as well as a variety of places to eat within walking distance.

  Child Friendly: 

This is probably the most child friendly convention I have come across. There is a ton of children’s programming available as well as babysitting available.  Children programming does fill up quickly, so I suggest keeping signing up as soon as the programming is announced. There is a courtyard just outside of the convention floor that gives children some room to run around and wind down a bit. There are plenty of food options available at the convention as well as in the nearby neighborhoods. I was able to find food options for even the pickiest of eaters.

Pros of this Con: 

There is so much great programming that there really is something for everyone. There are guest from the audio series, from the comic book creators, there are even guests from other fandoms. If you are interested in cosplay, there are panels on cosplay as well. There are writing workshops, discussion groups, ribbon trading, meet ups of all types. There is a bar and lounge area on the main floor of the hotel that is lovingly referred to as “Lobby Con”.  At this 2018 Convention Steven Moffat and Sylvester McCoy were both spotted in the lobby with fans, interacting and hanging out with fans. The con takes place in the same hotel that many of the guest stay in, so seeing the guest walk around is very common. They are not guarded by security like they are at larger conventions. This gives the convention a more intimate feeling and allows for experiences that would not normally happen at other conventions. One of the benefits of a convention that is specifically geared towards Doctor Who fans is that everyone at the convention is a Doctor Who fan. You are in a safe place to express your total love for Doctor Who. It creates a very welcoming and open environment. You are all there to celebrate the thing that you all have in common. The thing that you all love.

Cons of this Con: 

The Vendor/Dealer’s room at Gallifrey One is pretty small compared to most Southern California conventions. It boast only a few rows of vendors. It seems fine for a convention that holds less than 4,000 attendees and despite being small you can still find some truly unique merchandise that you wont find anywhere else, but it would be nice to see an artist alley with a nice variety of Doctor Who art for sale. The con takes place during a holiday weekend and it takes place at the same time as a gaming con in a neighboring hotel. This can make it difficult and pricey to find both room accommodations and parking. If you plan to stay at the hotel from Thursday until Sunday night, be prepared to spend upwards of $800 for the 4 days, 3 night stay.

Cosplay: 

The Cosplay is pretty top notch at Gallifrey One. The fun thing about cosplay at this convention as opposed to other pop culture conventions, is that because it all centers around one fandom, you find some of the most clever, creative and even obscure cosplays. At any given time you can fins cosplayers portraying characters from all walks of the Doctor Who universe. You can find cosplays from Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Class and even the Big Finish Audio Series (yes, they even cosplay from audio cover art).

We recommend turning on post notifications for the Gallifrey One Twitter and Facebook accounts so that you stay up to date on hotel announcements, ticket sales, guest announcements and programming information. If you are trying to get tickets or hotel room accommodations on the day they go live, don’t give up on the first sold out screen. try again for the first 20 minutes. Many times the systems just need to refresh and catch up, and you may be able to score the tickets/room that you need.

Gallifrey One: The Ultimate Whovian Convention What makes Gallifrey One so special? What makes it the hot ticket for Whovians and DWeeks? We are going to give you a general overview about what Gallifrey One is, what you can expect there and tips on how to get your hands on these hard to get tickets!

BI and analytics teams and self-service BI users can choose from various types of data visualizations. Here are examples of 12, with advice on when to use them.

A wide variety of data visualization techniques can be used to help business users find the meaning in BI and analytics data. Visualization is a core component of the business intelligence process, and many enterprises are seeing an explosion in the need for it, driven by improvements in data infrastructure, wider use of BI tools and a corresponding rise in data literacy.

The core ideas behind data visualization have been around for decades, but visualization options and practices have changed over the years -- and not always for the better. Early data visualizations tended to be simple but not flexible. As BI developers and visualization designers got more and more fancy in displaying data, graphics became dense and often inscrutable.

"Finally, we are reaching a place where customer needs drive the design and simplicity, and clarity is returning," said Gary Davis, senior UX designer at CloudCheckr, a cloud management platform vendor. Ultimately, Davis added, designers are still trying to solve the same problem: finding the best way to communicate data analysis results to answer business questions.

Instead of implementing standard charts, BI analysts and data scientists increasingly are creating custom ones "that can help tell the story in an intuitive fashion," said Ramesh Hariharan, CTO at consulting firm LatentView Analytics. But they and self-service BI users need to tread carefully in employing the cutting-edge techniques and interactive capabilities built into today's data visualization tools, he cautioned.

"With the rise of modern tools, visualization is easy to do and even easier to get wrong," Hariharan said. "The mistakes in visualization far outweigh the mistakes in other aspects of data analysis, both in terms of frequency and impact."

Davis, Hariharan, and other BI and analytics practitioners weighed in on some of the best -- and worst -- ways to use common data visualization techniques, from line and bar charts to more elaborate methods of visualizing data. Here's a look at 12 of those techniques, with an example of each one.

Line charts

Line charts are familiar to most people, and well-designed ones can be easily analyzed at a glance. "Nothing is better than a good old line plot when monitoring numerical attributes over time," said Paolo Tamagnini, data scientist at open source analytics software vendor KNIME AG.

Line charts can show different measures of categorical attributes on separate colored curves so users can quickly compare them. In addition, making a line plot interactive can help users browse through a large number of curves that might be confusing in a static visualization.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, line charts have been the most used data visualization technique to illustrate the spread of the disease and to compare the effectiveness of containment measures country by country, as in the interactive example provided by Tamagnini that's shown below.

Bar charts

The bar chart is one of the simplest and best known data visualization techniques. "Humans eyes are really good at comparing the length of sorted bars -- not angles, not color gradients, not curved shapes," Tamagnini said. "That's why I still love to use bar charts whenever I can."

Patrick Miller, who leads the data reporting and visualization team at consulting firm West Monroe Partners, said bar charts can be understood by virtually anyone without training or explanation. But watch out for the temptation to make them too busy, he cautioned.

Pie charts

The pie chart is another well-known type of data visualization, in which different percentages of a whole are represented as slices of a pie. They make great eye candy, but visualization experts said they don't convey the differences between data as well as other techniques do. As a result, they can be hard to interpret.

"Pie charts rank low in precision because users find it difficult to accurately compare the sizes of the pie slices, although such charts can be helpful when you're giving a high-level message," said Manjula Mahajan, director of business intelligence and data analytics at storage vendor NetApp.

Bubble charts

Bubble charts are used to express three dimensions of data based on the x-y location and size of each bubble. With minimal explanation, a bubble chart can provide useful information about relatively complex data sets, said Chris Adams, vice president of product management at SparkPost, maker of a predictive analytics platform for analyzing email outreach efforts.

Adams recommended, though, that the labels for the various bubbles be clearly visible. Also, he said the bubbles should be sized so they don't bump into each other and are different enough to quickly convey insights about the data they represent. For example, in the SparkPost visualization shown below, the bubble sizes indicate the relative frequency in which different sentiments were used in the subject lines of an organization's email campaigns.

But not everyone is a fan of bubble charts. Mahajan said they aren't always a good fit for BI dashboards and can require too much mental effort to understand "due to their lack of precision and clarity."

Histograms

Daniel Chalef, vice president of data science at SparkPost, said histograms offer an effective way to visualize the distribution of the values in a data set, which may help users when analyzing the data. Averages are often misused and can be misleading, Chalef said. For example, the average deal size in a sales pipeline can be skewed by several large deals. To provide more accurate information, an analyst can use a histogram to show the number of deals within different price ranges, as in the example below.

Histograms look like bar charts, but they're specifically designed to illustrate data distribution. The equally sized numerical ranges that the data values get grouped into are called bins, some of which may not have bars if no data falls into those ranges. One potential issue with histograms is ensuring that the bins are properly sized to convey useful and relevant information.

Heatmaps

A heatmap uses color coding to show the magnitude of data elements in two dimensions. CloudCheckr's Davis said that can help his company's customers understand the temporal characteristics of their cloud infrastructure. For example, CloudCheckr uses heatmaps to visualize the use of cloud resources in different time periods so customers can see good times to shut off or downsize servers to reduce costs.

But Joshua Moore, principal technologist for cloud analytics at NetApp, said the heatmap is his least favorite visualization technique, at least in most situations he has seen it used. He often sees dozens or hundreds of key performance indicators (KPIs) on things like the operational health of servers tracked on a grid in one view, with all but a few of them showing as green.

"This just creates clutter and noise," Moore said. "The healthy KPIs require neither action nor attention, so why does anyone need to see them? Conditional formatting like this is best kept to a handful of top-level KPIs, not huge heatmaps."

Scatter plots

Scatter plots are useful to display the relative density of two dimensions of data. Well-designed ones quantify and correlate complex sets of data in an easy-to-read manner. "Often, these charts are used to discover trends and data, as much as they are to visualize the data," Adams said.

For example, the SparkPost scatter plot below enables digital marketers to correlate the number of characters in email subject lines with email read rates to help them identify best practices and plan future campaigns.

KNIME's Tamagnini likes to use scatter plots to show relationships for single data points -- for such uses, they're easier to read and interpret than bar charts and other visualization techniques, he said. However, he added that scatter plots struggle when analysts try to display more than two dimensions. Also, packing too many data points into a scatter plot can make it hard to decipher.

t-SNE

This technique, formally known as t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), uses a machine learning algorithm to model high-dimensional data sets as two- or three-dimensional data points for display in a scatter plot, using colors, shapes or other visual elements to represent the third dimension. It was developed to address some of the limitations of conventional scatter plots.

Data scientists tap t-SNE to transform relationships in the raw data so they're easier to visualize. "The adoption of data transformation techniques, like t-SNE, is the direct consequence of the increase in data literacy and data science expertise in the data visualization field," Tamagnini said.

Sankey diagrams

Sankey diagrams represent data and process flows via lines and arrows with different widths that illustrate the magnitude of individual flows. SparkPost's Chalef said they're a "beautiful tool for illustrating flows in a network," using a directed graph that runs left to right.

A Sankey diagram can be visually overwhelming at first, West Monroe's Miller said. But it's a flexible visualization technique that can work even with massive fluctuations in the underlying data set, he added. For example, he has used it to visualize how applications move through a complicated, nonrigid workflow.

"A Sankey diagram is not easy to understand and requires explanation to the user in order to gain insights," Miller said. He recommended that designers include instructions or help text in a visualization or a dashboard where it's embedded, ideally in a hover-over information field.

Treemaps

A treemap displays hierarchical data using nested blocks that are sized differently based on the data values they represent and can be packed into other blocks to show large data sets. For example, IT administrators often use treemaps to track the use of disk space, memory or CPU resources in systems. The blocks can help users identify data trends, although fluctuations in their sizing and how they're ordered are potential complications that visualization designers need to consider.

Davis said CloudCheckr has started experimenting with treemaps to visualize cloud security vulnerabilities based on the severity and scope of individual security issues. It can be hard to communicate the size and scale of a particular vulnerability to customers using other data visualization techniques, he said, adding that the treemaps show promise in helping users to understand the severity of the issue at hand and the level of urgency it requires.

Circle packing charts

A circle packing chart is a treemap variation that use circles rather than blocks to represent the relationship among data objects. See Ho Ting, senior director of software engineering for CommScope's Ruckus line of networking products, said he finds them useful for showing an overview of a network and illustrating the severity of performance issues in different parts of the network.

Plotting different-sized circles within larger circles makes it easier to display network data three layers deep, including the overall network, the individual controllers and the different zones within each controller, Ting said. That provides a helicopter view of a network's health for a quick scan by users, plus deeper visibility into problems, he added.

Network diagrams

A network diagram represents the way data elements are connected by showing nodes and the link lines between them. "Network diagrams help visualize data that is most hard to grasp without visualization," LatentView's Hariharan said. There are many examples: networks of friends and the strength of their relationships, data transmission between systems and devices, financial networks, disease propagation, transportation and people movement, criminal activity and more.

One of the challenges of designing a network diagram is deciding what to show and what to hide. "Many times, the default network diagram comes out like a ball of mud with no obvious patterns," Hariharan said. Designers need to include a mechanism to show the big picture and then progressively drill down and see more details as a user zooms in on the diagram, he advised.

Combined visualizations

"Simple charts are powerful, but combining them together is even more powerful," KNIME's Tamagnini said. For example, he combined a bar chart, a scatter plot and a parallel coordinates plot in a single dashboard, shown below, to provide a more detailed and interactive view of the underlying data for an analytics application to predict customer churn.

The combination of the three visualizations enables users to select all customers who churned or didn't churn by clicking on the associated column in the bar chart. Data on the selected group of customers is automatically displayed in the two plots so the users can compare numerical attributes to see whether there's a correlation between them and customer churn. It's an example of how the visual analytics mantra coined by UX and visualization pioneer Ben Shneiderman in 1996 can be applied to all sorts of data visualization techniques: "Overview first, zoom and filter, then details-on-demand."

Whatever they share with that far-off Chilean, baseball is a part of what makes them distinct. The fact that their national sport happens to have evolved in the northern neighbor is almost an afterthought. I doubt that it was in the mind of that grandstand orator in 1992 at all. Though the word béisbol was imported along with the game, in common speech in Cuba and the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico the game is always la pelota, which is simply the Spanish word for ball.

Yet the game’s origin matters too. Baseball has a place in the complicated love-hate relationship, power dynamics, understandings, and misunderstandings between those south of our border and ourselves. Some two decades later, I was reading through two collections of Dominican short stories, all related to baseball. One story was by the poet Alexis Gómez Rosa, who spent many years living and writing (in Spanish) in New York. In “The Real Thing” (titled in English), Gómez Rosa tells the life story of a radio announcer who got his start by imitating the play-by-play of legendary announcers such as Buck Canel and Rafael Rubí, calling imaginary games from the Dominican leagues and the US World Series, speaking into a guava branch instead of a microphone. In the story, baseball and its metaphors are entwined with Dominican political history, the US invasion of 1965, and the announcer’s eventual death at the hands of a corrupt Dominican officer. I was also struck by the aptly named “Sacrifice,” in which Sandra Tavárez draws on baseball and its terminology for a contemporary dilemma of gender, as a woman has to decide whether to stay on the island with her boyfriend and his two baseball-obsessed teenage sons or follow her diplomat parents to a life abroad. Attending a ball game turns out to be the test. José Bobadilla’s “The Strange Game of the Men in Blue,” meanwhile, is an imaginary foundation myth, the introduction of the sport to an unnamed Caribbean country by the US army — which is not how it happened at all.

The question of how it really happened brings us back to Cuba. The earliest baseball games in the Spanish-speaking world took place on the island in the mid-1860s, when it was still a colony of Spain. This was two decades after the game had evolved out of British and American predecessors such as rounders and one o’ cat in the environs of New York City. The sport came to Cuba primarily via middle- and upper-class Cubans returning from study at Fordham and other Catholic colleges in the United States. Its rapid spread throughout the island was due in part to the fact that the new sport arrived just as long-simmering sentiments against both Spanish colonialism and slavery were erupting into open rebellion, sparking the Ten Years’ War (1868–’78) that pitted an uneasy coalition of Cuban planters, other white Cubans of all classes, free people of color, and escaped slaves against the Spanish imperial army. Both then and in the decades to follow, Cubans latched onto baseball as a modern, democratic, healthy, sportsmanlike, and distinctly non-Spanish entertainment, one that baseball’s boosters explicitly contrasted to the bullfight that they condemned as old-world, old-fashioned, bloodthirsty, hierarchical, and unfair.

The sport soon spread among people all classes and origins. Professional teams were founded in the cities of Havana and Matanzas, and makeshift clubs flourished from docks to sugar mills throughout the island, while publications such as El Pitcher and El Base-ball covered and promoted the game. Spanish authorities tried on a few occasions to ban baseball completely, but in vain. By the 1890s, a visiting Spanish poet reported that “[e]veryone was at baseball — men and women, old and young, masters and servants […] I had a presentiment that Spain had died for Cuba.”

When the final Cuban war for independence broke out (1895–’98), Spanish authorities again instituted a ban, and this time professional ballplayers were among those who flocked to join the rebellion. Three members of the pitching staff of the Almendares Azules became rebel army officers, as did players from the other clubs. Emilio Sabourín, player-manager of the rival Havana club, was arrested for his pro-independence activities and exiled to a prison camp in Spanish Morocco, where he died.

Thus, by the time US troops intervened in the Cuban-Spanish conflict in 1898, baseball was already firmly established as the island’s nationalist pastime, however North American its pedigree. When the yanqui troops ended their occupation of Cuba in 1902, the Platt Amendment (inserting a perpetual US right of intervention into the new Cuban constitution) was seen as an imposition they left behind. The Cuban struggle for independence also facilitated the sport’s introduction to neighboring countries and peoples. From the 1860s to the 1890s, tens of thousands of Cubans left the island to escape Spanish political repression or economic devastation. Some settled in Tampa or New York, others in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the Atlantic coasts of Mexico and Venezuela. As veteran Venezuelan sportswriter Juan Vené has put it, Cuba was

the cradle of the those who played the major role in introducing baseball to the rest of our countries […] that [Cuban] blend of indigenous Tainos with Spaniards and African blacks, living ninety miles of Caribbean waters off the coast of Florida, those cheerful and talkative Caribbeans, extroverted and emigrant as people who are born and grow up on islands tend to be.

Sugar planters or sugar mill mechanics, doctors or dockworkers, students of professions or professional shortstops, they brought baseball knowledge, equipment, and especially enthusiasm to the cane fields surrounding San Pedro de Macorís and the streets of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, to the Yucatán Peninsula and the port of Veracruz in Mexico, and to Venezuela and Puerto Rico as well.

In Venezuela, therefore, the game was already well ensconced when, in 1902, the first series between a local team and one from outside the country was played: the Caracas team club versus crew members of a US gunboat, the USS Marietta, cruising the Caribbean in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. The sailors won the first game 16-3, and Caracas won the second 27-17, thanks in part to a grand slam by Cuban shortstop Emérito Argudín, a former Havana college player who had arrived in 1898 and founded a weekly newspaper devoted to the sport. The game was played near the ship’s anchorage in the port of La Guaira, in an improvised stadium where, according to Venezuelan baseball historian Javier González, “vendors sold fish patties and sugar water with lemon, and great quantities of beer were drunk in the makeshift stands.” The victory in the second game, especially, “unleashed an unprecedented enthusiasm for baseball in the state of Vargas,” the future home of the legendary La Guaira Sharks.

Only in Panama and Nicaragua did baseball have purely North American roots. The sport probably came to Panama (then still part of Colombia) via Americans crossing the isthmus during the 1849 California Gold Rush, or in the following decade with US railroad builders, travelers, and crews. Nicaragua, most likely the last Spanish-speaking country to take up the sport, seems to have acquired it, fittingly, from the cradle of the “New York game.” In Bluefields on the Caribbean coast, a lumber exporter named Albert Adlesberg sent back to his home town of New York City for baseball equipment, and by 1889 he had launched several teams.

From then on, the sport was deeply enmeshed in the region’s culture, and sometimes its politics. Always, of course, the victory of national teams in international tournaments was an occasion for intense national pride. Cuba was the perennial powerhouse, but Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic vied fiercely for Caribbean-wide titles too. During the tie-breaking final game of the 1941 Baseball World Cup (a Caribbean event long preceding the current Baseball World Classic), all schools and most shops in Venezuela were closed, the national government cabinet meeting was postponed, and the entire country listened to the radio broadcast from Havana. The victorious Venezuelan underdogs, the first such club to win a national championship, enshrined ever-after as the “Heroes of ’41,” were received with a valedictory address and poem (“Romance del Campeonato”) by the popular writer and politician Andrés Eloy Blanco.

Two rather more partisan examples of the sport’s role in internal politics come from opposite ends of the political spectrum. In the 1920s, in the wake of the Mexican Revolution, Yucatán’s popularly elected socialist governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto undertook radical reforms to break the stranglehold of the region’s plantation aristocracy and empower the Mayan-descended farmworker recently freed from their condition as serfs. The Socialist Party’s base organization created a special sports section headed by a teacher of baseball, provided team travel subsidies to further break down the isolation of the countryside, distributed over $20,000 worth of baseball equipment, and organized ball clubs in more than 70 percent of the state’s communities. Team names included Emiliano Zapata, The Martyrs of Chicago (after the executed Haymarket demonstrators), and Red Yucatán. The sport was linked to ancient Mayan games played in the ball courts being unearthed in the ruins of Chichén Itzá and other sites, and again it was contrasted with the bullfight, a symbol of the Spanish conquest and the pre-revolution era.

On the right, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo organized a famous all-star team in 1937. After renaming Santo Domingo as Ciudad Trujillo in 1936, he was determined that the city should not lose another national championship to either Santiago de los Caballeros or San Pedro de Macorís. Therefore he decreed that for the 1937 season two rival teams of the capital (think Yankees and Dodgers in 1950s New York) should be combined into a single team, Los Dragones (Dragons). He gave the general manager unlimited funds to hire talent from all over the Caribbean as well as stars from the US Negro Leagues. The result was a powerhouse Dragones team managed by a Cuban and made up of Americans, Cubans, one Puerto Rican (Pedro “Petrucho” Cepeda, father of future San Francisco Giants’s great Orlando Cepeda), and a sole Dominican. The players were frequently monitored by armed guards, and once before a crucial game they were jailed overnight to keep them away from the city’s bars and other temptations. Ciudad Trujillo narrowly won the championship, the dictator won bragging rights, and the relieved foreign players (including Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell) left the next day.

In North America, aside from the classic 1888 poem “Casey at the Bat,” baseball has found a literary home mostly in novels. In Latin America, by contrast, there are practically no baseball novels, despite the number of prominent novelists who have been great baseball fans — Mexico’s Juan Rulfo, Cuba’s Leonardo Padura and Arturo Arango, Nicaragua’s Sergio Ramírez, and Puerto Rico’s Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá. Baseball does play a certain role in Padura’s Heretics (primarily in the form of a ball signed by the legendary Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso) and in one climactic scene of Rodríguez Juliá’s The Pool (where a boy and his father attend a game in the San Juan stadium, and a microcosm of class, race, and international hierarchy emerges before the boy’s eyes).

One reason for this lack of novels, I suspect, is that, for a long time, Latin American high culture looked toward Europe while its popular culture, at least in the Caribbean and Central America, looked toward the United States. So writing about baseball was no way to make one’s literary mark as a “serious” writer. Similarly, the publishing big shots and tastemakers resided in Madrid, Barcelona, or Buenos Aires, not in baseball capitals like Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, or San Juan. Also, to the extent that US baseball fiction could have influenced Latin American writing, the dominance of Spanish publishing again raised an obstacle. According to the late Mexican dramatist Vicente Leñero, author of the one-act plays Aut at Third and Fielder of Destiny, the translations he encountered, done in Spain by translators as remote from the game as the emblematic Chilean who didn’t know where to find first base, were laughable at best.

There is a stronger tradition of baseball poetry, including the Cuban Nicolás Guillén’s long elegy to the star pitcher and position player Martín Dihigo, the Mexican Alberto Blanco’s epic “La vida en el diamante” (“Life on the Diamond”), and Nicaraguan Horacio Peña’s book-length Poem for a Man Called Roberto Clemente. But what has saved Latin American baseball fiction is that prose writers and poets too have allowed their passion for the game to be expressed in short stories.

I had read a few such stories by Sergio Ramírez, published in the United States in Nick Caistor’s translations in the 1980s when Ramírez was Nicaragua’s vice-president in the first Sandinista administration. What set me off in a search for more was finding, at the Havana Book Fair in 2014, an anthology of 26 Cuban stories called Escribas en el Estadio (Scribes in the Stadium). While all touching, in some way, on baseball, the stories covered the complete gamut of styles and themes in contemporary Cuban writing. There were five or six that I especially loved, and I wondered what else might be out there in the other baseball-playing countries. That’s what led me, finally, to editing and translating Kill the Ámpaya!, a collection of 18 pieces from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, and Nicaragua, published earlier this year by Mandel Vilar Press, which includes most of the writers mentioned above plus others such as Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro, Rodrigo Blanco Calderón, Carmen Hernández Peña, and more.

Speaking of publishing, let me end by pointing out the crucial role of at least one case of Latin American state support for the arts. In 2008 and 2009, observing that “baseball has been an inseparable part of Dominican national identity” yet there had been an “almost inexplicable absence of a body of writing that would make use of literary situations that emerge from this sport,” the Secretariat of Culture of the Dominican Republic sponsored two prize contests for such stories, the winners of which were later published in the two collections I mentioned at the outset of this essay. The title of the first book, Jonrón 600, honors Sammy Sosa’s career home run total having exceeded that milestone. The second volume, published in 2012, looks to the future rather than the past. It’s called Círculo de espera, which means “on-deck circle,” encouraging us to imagine the writers of the near future rubbing dirt into their hands, taking their warmup swings, getting ready to step into the box and hammer out more literary clutch hits.

There are many challenges facing the beginner homesteader… and even the more seasoned practitioner who is running out of wind. Recently, I had the opportunity to reflect on these challenges in my own personal journey, and actually went out to get some answers. For those of you following the humble beginnings of Wellwood Farm, I have a full-time off-farm job (two jobs if you count family life). I’m also not from around these parts, and am really just trying to figure stuff out as I go, especially since I have no background in agriculture. Basically my challenges are linked to limited resources, namely (and in no particular order) time, money and community. So I was thrilled to learn that, in exchange for a bit of my time, the organizers of the Guelph Organic Conference (which usually occurs the last week of January) were allowing me to save hard earned $ getting connected to like-minded individuals.

The deal is, you get free access to all workshops when you volunteer that day. If you want maximum flexibility, sign up for Saturday set-up and/or Sunday teardown, but there’s also coat check, registration desk, workshop facilitation, etc. I signed up for Saturday setup as I wanted to be free for all 4 workshop sessions that day, and although it’s tough getting there at 6am, I can tell you now that I’ll be doing the same next year. There are some breaks in the waves of equipment, supplies and props, and that’s when you start chatting with your fellow volunteers about their experiences and which workshops they’re interested in. Like the guy that started telling us about a farm that grows native pawpaw trees under black walnuts as they’re the only ones that can, hence reduced competition and…Oh, hold that thought, there’s a truck backing up that needs to be unloaded. Anyway, it’s a cool way to meet new people, some are veterans, some are newbies, but we’re all there to help out and have a good time. So, was it worth it, did I get what I was looking for? Here’s what I learned that day.

The first workshop I attended was hosted by Hanna Jacobs of Matchbox Garden & Seed Co, and her catchy title was “How to turn a profit on under 2 acres”. Although I’m not looking to give up my day job, i figured she must have a few nuggets of wisdom if she turns a profit on the same space as I break my back on every year. And although her profit is a third of what I need to raise my family and pay for my banker’s extravagant lifestyle (aka mortgage), there were many a gold nugget to be found in her honest talk and subsequent chat that evening as the tradeshow was closing down for the day (sorry!) Her main points were: know what you want, be realistic, diversify into niche markets, have a business plan…and keep revisiting those as you go along because things do change…all the time.

The last workshop of the day, presented by Catherine Stilo, was geared toward the casual gardener rather than the professional business. It wasn’t clear whether the husband and wife team had off-farm jobs, but the abundant produce coming from their rural backyard was shared mainly with family and friends (and one very lucky neighbor). She touched on the principles of permaculture, perennial gardens and thriftiness, but what I loved the most in her presentation was those summer photos where she’s holding a fresh-picked veggie and all you can see is that smile!

Both these ladies stressed the importance of enjoying life in the process. I realized somewhere over the past 4 years I had lost that because my expectations were disproportional to my reality at that time. Eager to recreate eden on earth, I planted everything and anything in much greater quantities than I could handle. We all know those seed catalogues are awfully tempting, but would I plant as many if I were saving seeds year over year like Hanna? And if I had a smaller space and decided to use raised beds as Catherine did, would I plant that many tomatoes (and beets, and beans, and squash, and…)? Probably not. Instead, I find myself with an overabundance of food fit for a CSA that I have neither time nor energy to devote to. Now, if we were part of a community that shared the same values, the story may be different.

2) Finding a community

Last year when attending the conference, I only went to the free tradeshow looking for seeds and to see what was out there. I was a little overwhelmed at the number of booths with all their different agendas. From large scale farming equipment to co-operatives to consultants to NGOs to home gardening tools and products to food brands…and all the nuances in between. This year, I was hoping to make some good connections to recreate the community we left behind in our home country. In addition to the two speakers mentioned above, I was able to ferret out a couple of booths that could be interesting leads. The first was Fiddlehead Nursery, located near Collingwood, which offer tours of their edible forest setup. Not only is this a great way to see something new that works in our climate, but they also mentioned there was a community not far from there where some young aspirational homesteaders had started buying up properties along a stretch of side road from the previous generation (lucky snowbirds), each bringing their own contributions for the common good. I can’t wait to find out more about these guys, and even maybe meet some of them when I visit Fiddlehead Nursery in the spring. Another great conversation I had was at the Rare Breeds Canada booth, where I was told they could probably hook me up with an old timer in my area that could talk my ear off about which chickens would be best for our setup. And this post would not be complete without the lovely Nicole at Upper Canada Fibreshed, who immediately drew us in with her spinning wheel and wining smile (proof in photo above). Her group seeks to connect local wool producers, and particularly from rare breeds, directly with consumers.

Then there was Ivan, a budding consultant at Eden in Season with lots of great ideas. Although I was a bit confused at first trying to figure out what his booth was about, he was very engaging, pulled out a map of the area and circled my approximate location compared to his. I found out he did a bit of everything, with the aim of helping confused souls, like myself, explore possibilities and connect with opportunities. Although he avoided my initial question of “do you do mushrooms”, I’ll definitely be connecting with him in the near future and hopefully go out to see what he has achieved in his area. There were also several cooperatives, buying clubs, councils, organizations and associations that I need to do a bit of research on before providing an opinion. There’s a photo above to give you a little idea of the homework awaiting.

Lastly, I recalled talking to a guy promoting Outdoor schooling in a previous tradeshow, but was sad not to find him this year. As our toddler miraculously blooms into a child (when did we start having conversations all of a sudden?), we’re starting to look into school options, including homeschooling. I can only imagine there’s a whole universe just waiting for us as we go down that path, which I’ll be sure to report back on.

3) Other learnings

The two middle workshops were related to native plants for carbon sequestration and providing wildlife habitat, with an emphasis on pollinators. Although they didn’t help in my quest for resources, it definitely added to my list of cool things to try on the farm. Some are embarrassingly simple, such as tying reeds together and making a mini sand/rock garden, whereas others involve intensive rehabilitation more fit for experts. I had previously read about switchgrass and was thrilled to find a booth with someone knowledgeable to answer my questions, photos and even bowls of the stuff to get a feel of the product (last photo above).

So, in short I got what I came for and more, with the caveat that I’ve only scratched the surface and need to do a bit more digging (pardon the puns). Thankfully, we have another 2 months in good ol’ Zone 5 before we can really get outside, so as long as the passion doesn’t fade, there should be some exciting changes on our farm in 2017. Bring it on!
