Toshiro/Shuro is overhated
(mirror of my thread on twitter)
ever wanted to talk abt something so bad but u have so many thoughts so u cant even begin to organize a sentence. thats me abt shuro and its why i cant give my thoughts on him. i NEED to get this out of my system bc its takign up so much memory in my brain i need that space for thinking.
so i was really surprised to find so much hate for him even tho he seems pretty normal and rational out of the whole cast. ive deducted that its mostly abt his laios fight and that the ppl who hate him probably had bad experiences w social cues and relationships w neurotypicals bc of that. theres no way to avoid it bc its pretty much Right In Your Face that laios is ND. but thats not the only factor in why their relationship is rocky. its also the culture barrier. u have to understand toshiro was raised as JAPANESE NOBILITY ofc he would be a little conservative
also culture shock. idk if u know this but jp culture is very Mind Your Own Business like a lot of other asian cultures . ofc hes gonna be weirded out by a stranger invading his space. also his names not even Shuro. its just yt ppl not pronouncing his name right and settling for whats easiest.
Tumblr media
img src: fan translation by savaralyn2 , i think its from the adventurers bible Complete Edition bc i dont remember it in the old one
ok you get the gist of the culture aspect of it. lets go into the ND/NT clash aspect of it. yes i understand its pretty hurtful to never be told when youre acting inappropriately. i am autistic too lmao. but you have to understand that shiro is one guy and he even does realize that repressing things is one of his fatal flaws. again. asian culture. non confrontational. that sorta thing. but these are genuine frustrations. if i were him id be annoyed too but id speak out about it. set boundaries. bc im blunt. shiros not. he was taught crazy strict manners (hierarchies, respect, politeness, etc).
his problem isnt ableism its a culmination of culture barriers, how he was raised to behave, and terrible lack of communication as thing caused by "all of the above" plus he just generally keeps to himself a lot which means repressing frustrations that will explode leading to a pathetic fistfight while hes starved, exhausted, and dehydrated. also. if he was ableist he would hate laios. he doesnt hate laios. at the end of the day, they are friends. NT and ND ppl can be friends u know. there will be rifts (like their fight) but you just have to communicate misunderstandings. theyre gonna be fine lol
anyways that was my whole spiel abt it. i think i got everything out that i wanted to? my head still feels a little full so i may add more later when i remember something
also i think its a little unfair to rule out the possibility of laios and him just being 2 very different kinds of ND bc its very common for misunderstandings to occur even then. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT BUT WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE TO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER! but for the sake of interpreting the Fight as a commentary on NT social rules and ND frustration, ill say toshiros NT. will we ever know? hes so far in the sidelines... youd really have to dig in the extra content to see the intricacies of his character.... please give him a chance

So, before my kid takes up the rest of the character slots, I made one more Dragonborn. Meet Azuri Indoril, bio below. And yes, the name is intentional!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[img ID] screenshots from Skyrim. The PC is a female Dunmer mage with grey skin and dark red eyes. She has long white hair with shaved sides and purple warpaint. She is at Jorrvaskr in Whiterun and Ralof is with her. [/end img ID]
Bio: Born to a New Temple priest and priestess in Mournhold, Azuri had the portends of a great destiny (her birthsign is The Ritual). Believing this meant she would return their house to its former glory and because of her stark, white hair (much like a certain long-ago Hortator), she was named for her goddess and given the surname of her house rather than that of her parents (Madryon). Powerful in magicka, she was raised to believe in this destiny.
Eventually the idea and the pressure became too much and she fled at 22 to find her own way in life. A year later, after wandering through northern Cyrodiil, she heads north toward the College of Winterhold for a quiet place to disappear and study her art. On her way there, she arrested with a group of Stormcloaks and discovers her grand destiny is much different than what she thought it would be.
***
The lighting in these pics is a little odd, and doesn't show off how white her hair is (got it and the style from the KS white hair mod). She's my youngest Elder Scrolls character*, and my first pure mage, although she does have a sword just in case. I'm planning on her build at the moment, probably Conjuration with a side of Destruction. I can't wait to get her up to Winterhold and introduce her to J'Zargo!
*Edited to add that I fucked that up. Rilenna is 21 during the events of Morrowind. I was thinking about their age at the start of the Oblivion crisis. My bad. Thus, Rilenna is my youngest TES character during the events of their game.

i would die for a "how to use html and css to format ao3" lesson from you 👀 no pressure but i'm genuinely in awe :)
Hello! So sorry it’s taken me ages to get to this.
It's no pressure at all! I have tried to cover the basics of HTML/CSS on AO3 here, and instead of writing very extensively about the syntax which is very Google-able, I have tried to include little tips and tricks that have come in handy for me.
This, by no means, is a complete guide but I hope it can get you started with HTML and CSS on AO3!
It got pretty long, so the answer’s below the cut.
Okay, so let’s start at the very beginning, shall we?
What is HTML and CSS?
Well, HTML is Hyper Text Markup Language and CSS is Cascading Style Sheets.
But that is something that probably doesn’t help a lot, so to put it very simply, HTML provides the structure of a webpage while CSS does the styling, that is, fixing how and where the elements should exist, how to shape them, how to space them, all so that the webpage looks great.
Something to keep in mind is that all web pages can run only on HTML but the end result is not going to be something that’s nice to look at. In fact, without CSS, the page might not even make a lot of sense. Here, take a look at Tumblr itself with all CSS disabled (there’s a very useful extension called Web Developer that allows you to do this):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not very nice to look at, but all the elements of the page are here only with the help of HTML.
And look, this is what the above section looks like with CSS enabled:
Tumblr media
This was just a brief visual walkthrough to show what HTML and CSS really do, but let’s move on to HTML and CSS in the world of AO3.
Where does the HTML and CSS go on AO3?
The HTML part of the code is put into the text box when you post a new story/new chapter. You must have noticed the two options — Rich Text and HTML — and it’s important to have HTML selected for AO3 to identify the HTML tags that you’ll be using.
All your content goes into this textbox. Whatever text you may be writing, whatever images you may be hosting, whatever links you might want to add— everything goes here.
Now, for styling all the content that you’ve put into the textbox, you need CSS, and that happens through work skins. It’s super simple, and all you have to do is go to Skins on your AO3 panel and then to My Work Skins, and then create a new work skin where you can dump all of your CSS code.
Okay, so onward we go.
How to HTML and CSS?
I’m no expert in web design and my knowledge mostly comes from Coursera, one summer internship, one class in college, and extensive online searching. And, I’ll tell you this, the most I have learnt is from extensive online searching.
Because at the very heart of it, web design is not so much about understanding and applying concepts (as with other coding languages) but more about visualizing elements and testing them out. I must add that this is completely my opinion as a person who rather enjoys data structures and algorithms as compared to web dev, and I’m certain that seasoned web developers will disagree with my views here.
Right, so the online searching. The best in the business when it comes to explaining HTML/CSS is www.w3schools.com. They have sample code, short and sweet explanations, and an online IDE to test your code. Really, it’s a win-win situation.
Alrighty, so now you know where to look for your HTML tags and CSS properties but how do you figure out which ones to use?
HTML Tags
I’ll talk about the HTML that’s required for coding on AO3 exclusively.
But before that— every HTML document has two main parts: the <head> and the <body>. But here on AO3, we only code the <body> which, as its name suggests, holds the content that’s going to appear on the browser. The <head> part is not required for AO3 work skins at all.
Okay, so how to code HTML on AO3? Well, your best friends are going to be the container tags such as <div> and <span>, and the paragraph tag <p>. What these tags do is they create areas on your browser — you can imagine them as small rectangles and squares — where you can put in your content via HTML, and then later style using CSS.
Tumblr media
See this? The entire shaded area belongs to a <div> which is styled by a CSS class called “tumblr” (to keep things simple, we’ll only focus on CSS classes, and not id’s. It won’t really hamper developing a workskin in any way.)
Tumblr media
This above belongs to a <p> that is styled by a CSS class “tumblrbody”. And, this <p> exists within the <div> mentioned above.
Tumblr media
Here’s a <span> styled using the CSS class “tumblrtags”, which comes within the <div> and <p> we just discussed.
Basically, the idea is that the entire page will have to be divided into all these subsections, nested within each other if required, so that they can then be styled using CSS.
Other HTML tags that come in handy are the <a> and <img> tags.
The <a> or anchor tag is used to embed links. Want your reader to be led to a separate page while they’re reading your story? This is it. (This one’s quite common, and authors use them quite frequently in their notes to link to their Twitter/Tumblr etc.)
The <img> tag is used to embed images as the name suggests.
Tumblr media
See how the picture is within an <img> tag styled by a CSS class “tumblrimg”?
Again, I’m not talking about the syntax of these tags or how they have to be written because that’s something which can very easily be found on w3schools or any other web dev tutorial website.
So, that’s pretty much about HTML. Now, CSS.
CSS Properties
So, when I talk about how most of my web dev happens through thorough internet searching, I’m mostly talking about CSS. Because HTML tags aren’t difficult to remember, they stay in memory when you keep designing web pages, but CSS properties... ugh.
But before we begin, a short note on CSS classes. To simplify matters you can look at them as labels given to your HTML container tags (<div> for example). Once you assign the label to your HTML element, you can then style that label in your CSS, and introduce properties to it which you want to see in your HTML. It basically forms the link between your HTML and CSS.
Say, I have a <div> that I want to style, then I’ll give it a label like this: <div class=”mongoosesurprise”>Your code</div>. The class name is mongoosesurprise, and when I have to style that particular <div>, I’ll have CSS code that looks like this:
Tumblr media
Now, about CSS properties.
You see all the words in white followed by a colon? max-width? border? background-image? That’s it— CSS properties. I can never remember if it is maxwidth or max-width, whether it’s margin-right or right-margin, whether it’s padding-right or right-padding, and that’s where the Googling comes in.
Again, like with HTML, I’ll only talk about CSS on AO3. Unlike regular CSS, CSS here always has to start with #workskin. And then, #workskin can be followed by our class name. (The class name must be preceded by a fullstop though, like in the picture above.)
My CSS design procedure is all over the place. I entirely work on the basis of trial and error. I keep adjusting properties like max-width and padding and margin to see how the elements fit best. (It doesn’t take me as long as it did four-five years ago to estimate these values and I’d attribute that to practice and inspecting a lot of web pages. On a related note, it’s great to learn web design by inspecting other pages.)
I realize this isn’t great advice but like I said, it’s always been about trial and error when it comes to CSS. What I can say conclusively is that with properties width, height, display, position, padding, and margin most of your HTML tags will be placed properly. But when it comes to styling, the list is really quite endless. From a number of font-related properties to border, there’s a lot— and, thus, Google.
And, finally, what you must know for HTML/CSS on AO3 is how to host images.
Hosting Images
If you want your work to contain images, it’s best to host them somewhere online. Imgur is a great option; it’s free and really simple to use. Once the image is uploaded, you can get the share links and put it in your HTML <img> tag (under the src attribute— again, very syntactical so I’m not getting into that), or if you want you can put it in your CSS as an attribute for the property “background-image” (like in the code above).
You’ll have to make minor changes to the share link though, that is, add the image extension (.png or .jpg) to the end of the link. Also, sometimes the image doesn’t render if there’s no ‘i’ preceding ‘imgur.com’. Here’s a sample link that works perfectly: http://i.imgur.com/aSMSztl.png.
And, I think that’s pretty much it.
This covers the absolute basics of how to code HTML/CSS on AO3. But I’d like to repeat that by no means is this everything. If there’s a particular area you’d want me to explain, please feel to drop in an ask!
Happy coding!

New Elements!
HTML is getting more and more interesting, but it is really tricky.
Tumblr media
This week we have seen so many different elements and attributes. My mind was spinning at the end of the class. But let’s write it down to make it clear.
At first, we were seeing just the very basic stuff, like the website needs a head, then the title, then the body, and everything else goes inside the body. We can add paragraphs, pictures, lists, and links.
Now we need to separate everything in blocks, so more elements has to be there, and it doesn’t change anything on the appearance of the webpage, we need to organize it to make the design later on with CSS.
The tags (markups) are used to give information meaning and they will structure the website.
So, to organize the webpage we need to think about what is going to appear first. The most popular websites will have a  <header> with the Logo of the website, a navigation bar <nav>, <articles> in which can be added pictures, <aside> bar with more content,  and the <footer> finalizing the page with a few extra information.
We still have one little guy called <div>. This element has no meaning itself. It is used to make blocks when we don’t have any better option to use, as the specific ones: <article> or <footer>.
(To be honest, I still don’t understand when I need to use it, I need to start building my own page to see where it will fit.)
We also have inline elements such as <em> <strong> and <img>. They will be next to each other and inside the block.
Then we have ID and Class. These two fellas have the job to identify an element, making it special and different from the others.
Eg.: <div id=“branding”>  and <div class="articlebody">
The difference between them is that class can be used more than one time on the same page and ID can be used just once.
Therefore a combination of elements, id, class and attributes can give a page structure and meaning.
And finally, we got the <meta> element that goes at the beginning of the page.  It is a void element, it doesn't have any content inside and doesn’t need to be closed.  These meta tags control the behavior of search engine crawling and indexing. The recommended attribute is <meta charset="utf-8">
After all of these, I have to say that I’m a little scared about HTML, but is still exciting to learn it.
Let’s see what Ruairi will bring next week.

How to Post [Responsive!] Images to AO3
Did you know AO3 allows archival of fanart and fancomics? Or that you can insert illustrations, screenshots, or other images in your A/Ns or the body of your work? Maybe you did know, but you’ve noticed that the images are difficult (impossible?!?) to view on tablets or phones. This tutorial will show you how to post your fanart or fancomics to AO3 and know that they will be displayed to fit any device they are viewed on with a bit of simple HTML and CSS. If you can copy and paste, you can do this.
STEP ONE Host your image somewhere else.
Yeah, I know this one sucks, but although the archive allows you to post your images, it doesn’t allow them to be hosted there. You’ll have to upload it to somewhere which provides a direct link first. Some options include:
Imgur - NSFW can be iffy. Technically not allowed, but they may not delete NSFW as long as you keep it private.
Pillowfort - NSFW friendly.
Tumblr - Well, you know.
Pillowfort has the disadvantage of being the only one of these which you have to pay for right now (since it’s still in Beta. This is supposed to change sometime in 2020), but the advantage of being the only one which allows explicit images. However, if you’re crossposting to tumblr and anyway, there’s no reason to upload it anywhere else. There may be others I’m not aware of, but these are the most popular. (Note: You can also host images on twitter, but grabbing the image link isn’t as easy and you have to manipulate the link they provide.)
Ultimately, you’re looking for the direct link to the image which ends in either: .gif, .jpg, .png, or tiff. On Imgur there is a field for a direct link. On pillowfort and tumblr, you simply right click and select “Copy Image Link” or “Copy Image Address”. Save this address for later. STEP TWO Create a work skin.
Follow steps one and two on this official tutorial from AO3 to create a work skin, or open your current work skin. Add the following code to the CSS box:
#workskin .resp {max-width: 100%; height: auto;}
Hit save. STEP THREE Apply the work skin.
Follow step four on the official tutorial from AO3 to apply your work skin to your fic.
STEP FOUR Use HTML to post your image. This is where you need your direct image link. Copy and paste the code below where you want your image to appear in the body or notes of your fic. Profit
<img src="imageaddress" alt="alt text for image id" class="resp">

SOUL of Fear: Always Afraid? Part 2
See series tag for previous posts. Best viewed on desktop.
--
Tumblr media
Screencapture of Betty, from Camila Cuevas's Undertale fan animation, GlitchTale.
While the previous post in the series covered indirect evidence for Bete Noire (“Betty”) being defined by her fear, the direct evidence is more persuasive. Betty seems to have a natural tendency for fear. When she first gained consciousness, she was a blank slate, but acted very frightened of Kumu. While Betty did quickly recover from her panic, the fact she responded with fear, and not fascination, bafflement, or just a neutral expression, may say something about her natural tendencies.
She didn’t exist by herself for long, though: Agate soon regained power or consciousness, and influenced Betty. At some point, Agate told her that monsters were dangerous and humans could not be trusted, and that the two races living together was just a “time bomb” waiting to go off. Betty may have accepted Agate’s claim unquestioningly because she was a blank slate, naturally prone to paranoia, or both.
Later experiences “proved” Agate right. Betty (as shown in supplementary material) was able to see into the memories of others by looking into their eyes, and concluded Asgore, Asriel, and Sans were a bunch of untrustworthy murderers.1 Most likely because of this memory-viewing, she kept believing monsters were a threat despite harmless or even positive interactions with Toriel, Sans, Asriel and Papyrus in “My Sunshine” and “Dust”. She still distrusts humans: seeing Frisk’s many genocide routes in their memories proved Frisk untrustworthy to her. (Oddly, despite her anti-monster beliefs, she didn’t ally herself with Frisk, someone with a history of killing monsters.)2 If she saw more than just Frisk’s Genocide Route memories, then perhaps she discarded memories of their kindness and the Pacifist Route because it didn’t fit with her paranoia.
Deeper Fears, Anxieties, and Insecurities
Tumblr media
If Betty was a blank slate prone to fear, easily persuaded to listen to no one else, then she was the perfect pawn for Agate. Agate told her Kumu (who’s really just part of Betty) is and would be her only friend. In Season 2, Episode 1 (1:00), Betty is hanging around the door of Toriel’s classroom, and looks anxious. Later, she tells Frisk that kids were sorted into classes based on SOUL color, but, with her unique SOUL color, she didn’t fit in. She says this in an anxious or sad way.3
Tumblr media
Betty manipulated Jessica Grey very effectively, so it’s not out of the question posing as a mildly-anxious girl as just an act to deflect suspicion or make others reluctant to harm her. Yet, it seems unlikely. Her dialogue to herself and Kumu in supplementary material suggests anxiety and/or uncertainty with its frequent ellipses, as well as suggesting Betty is lonely because she’s the only one of her kind and can trust no one but Kumu (and presumably Agate).
What am I?…  Something made to be hated?… … Looks like it…  I never asked to be made… I didn’t ask to be this way…  But it’s what I am. And here we are trying to fulfill our purpose despite our doubts…
This shows how her problems go deeper than just having no friends but Kumu. She seems conflicted over something about herself, whether it's the fact she is neither a human nor a monster or the effects of having a SOUL of Fear. Indeed, "something made to be hated" does match the series' dictionary definition of "Bête noire": "A person or thing strongly detested or avoided". Making a horrible abomination may have been the whole point of the Bête Noire spell, by which Betty was created and named after. Apparently, Betty feels she has no choice but to execute her purpose and cannot turn back, despite her (unspecified) doubts.
Worse, in "Do or Die", Gaster says there can be only one pink SOUL of Fear existing at one time. If Betty also knows this, it removes the possibility of ever befriending anyone like her. Perhaps Betty’s starry-eyed interest in Mettaton in "Dust", comes from the belief he was neither human nor monster, but a magic robot with a SOUL, and so a potential friend.
While she’s been very afraid when fighting monsters before (e.g., Gaster, and especially Undyne the Undying), it seems she's most afraid (or simply not confident) when she cannot physically attack her problems. For example, she cannot simply attack her uncertainties about her purpose and her isolation, nor can she physically attack the HATE substance threatening to take over her.
If Betty’s power increases the more afraid she is, then one wonders whether Agate deliberately isolated Betty so her fear (and thus power) would increase. Betty might execute her mother's will without question simply because she's not close to anybody else, and hasn't experienced anything that would prove her mother's beliefs wrong. Indeed, Betty trusts Agate so much that she varies between calling Agate her mother and seeming to conflate Agate with her own identity. To be specific, when she saw Agate's remains in supplementary material, it's impossible to tell whether she was going to say "my mother" or "my body".
While Frisk, too, feels similar despair or anxiety at various points in the series, Frisk quickly recovers. Perhaps it is from Frisk's tendency for determination, the comforting words of others, observing their friends' close bonds with each other, or some combination. Betty, however, has no friends (unless Kumu counts), receives little comfort, and believes she has no choice but to live a fearful, friendless, murderous life.
If you enjoyed this article, please consider looking at the Ko-Fi or Patreon of the article's author, ArgentDandelion. (The pages are fairly photogenic.)
In her defense, she might not have had training to properly evaluate others’ claims, and if she was naturally fear-prone, it would be very tempting to pin it all on something specific and possible to fight. ↩︎
It's plausible Agate wanted to kill off monsters because they could gain godlike power with seven human SOULs, and she would logically tell Betty about that. Yet, in GlitchTale, the barrier wasn’t broken after Frisk defeated the God of Hyperdeath. It’s weird, though...if Betty can see Frisk’s memories, surely she’d see Asriel with seven human SOULs wasn’t some unstoppable, bloodthirsty threat. Can she only see some memories? ↩︎
Betty is aware she is neither human nor monster. She may very well have wanted to attend Toriel’s school just because it was strategic for her evil plans. Still, the fact she was set apart even when she was disguising herself as a human must have hurt. ↩︎

LIKE MANY OTHERS, i am a simple individual who appreciates.... lapslock! its just more pleasing for me to look at and my grammar is kind of all over the place ... it’s the part i struggle the MOST in english honestly, but especially in my writing, i have a tendency to overuse run-on sentences and sometimes, they don’t even read as a proper sentence ;; i do this just because it flows easily for me at least and i like some of the words i could end up pairing together because of it too but i’ve been trying to improve upon it since like.. 10th grade ToT
11. when you are writing a reply, how much ahead in the thread do you plan?
i’ve always been a just wing it type of person when it comes to roleplaying mmkfs i find it difficult to guess what the other person would respond with and i know i used to do it a lot, but as time went on, i think i got tired of trying to assume and get a wrong prediction and then have to replan the entire thread in my head again so yeah !! i leave it and don’t really Think ahead ... the only part i spend my thinking on is writing a reply and be like how do i MATCH my partner’s beautiful writing ...
15. how often do you need to change the icon in your reply while or after writing the reply?
more often than i think ... i usually decide the icon after i finish the reply, but sometimes, having an icon decided before makes it easier for me to write the dialogue too. i’m able to be decisive with it like... a good 60% of the time id say.
19. how many drafts is a paralysing amount?
honestly my drafts are all over the place !! it has replies, it has prompt threads i want to reblog later, it has gifsets, img sets, fanart that i want to add to my queue at some point when i DO pump out replies ... i think in terms of replies, i have like around 10 ?? i usually start worrying once i’m unable to remember all of my threads dkfdsm
roleplaying habits questions / open !!

clickbait  storytime
how i got drunk when i was eight and it scarred me FOR LIFE.
In retrospect, it was hilarious. Dramatic? Let’s see how good of a storyteller I am.
It began in one of those fancy Chinese restaurants, the type that caters to the...exotic tastes. By that, I mean it served those ridiculously expensive and difficult to prepare dishes that each person in the dinner party nibbles on before nodding emphatically and extolling the subtle nuances of flavor. It was one of those places you didn’t go to if you wanted a solid meal; rather, it was a spot for people with exorbitant mouth cravings.
Me, being eight, was of limited taste preferences. Surprisingly, at least to my parents, I had not yet acquired the sophisticated taste buds that were necessary to appreciate these delicacies. As a result, I spent most of the dinner fiddling with my chopsticks and making snowmen out of plain white rice, listening to my relatives chatter away in the background in a language I didn't understand well.
And then dessert was served. The Dessert: 酒酿汤圆 (Typically eaten during the Dongzhi Festival)
Compared to the other dishes that had made an appearance that night, it was relatively common and was moreover a dessert I had vigorously partaken of before: sticky rice pearls and sweet fermented rice bathed in sweet rice wine.
Now, this dish has pretty low alcohol content, usually only about 1.5-2.0%. In other words, typically it’s pretty much impossible to get drunk from it. But keep in mind several things:
I was pretty short when I was eight years old.
I’d pretty much eaten nothing the whole night until dessert.
I had a massive sweet tooth.
The adults were busy talking and drinking actual liquor—which meant pretty lax supervision.
Add four things (weird coincidence: four’s an unlucky number in China, bet you didn’t know that) together, and boom you get—
Actually, I don’t know what you get; I don’t really remember much else from that night. I’m going to go ahead and say it was because I was eight and not because I got blackout drunk because I’d like to believe my parents noticed and stopped me before I got that far. They seem like fairly responsible folk.
Anyhow, fast forward about five, six, maybe seven? years later and my dad’s cracking open the seal to a large jug of bramble-berry brandy at a dinner party. I catch a whiff and snap like that it's an instant KO. Alcohol: 1, me: 0. I excuse myself as politely and urgently as possible to make a very intimate, face-to-face acquaintance with the toilet bowl. Pretty much from then on, just the smell of alcohol has been enough to make me shudder and throw up a little bit in the back of my throat.1
NERD MOMENT! This is actually completely justified by neuroscience!! If you get "sick" after eating something, you sometimes can maintain an adverse reaction even years after it happens. One of my friends ate too many waffles once and had a stomachache; after that, they wouldn't touch waffles with a ten-foot pole for months. ↩︎

DIY Crochet Handbag
Have you ever gone into a store or see something on TV/ Internet and say to yourself.. I can make that!!!  Well… Thats what happened to me one day when I went shopping at Target. I was looking for a Tote to carry the yarn I’m not packing up for our move. I glance over and see this crochet handbag… Natural instinct is to immediately check this out.. kinda like quality control.. was it machine made or handmade crochet, etc hahaha I pick it up, examine it.. Wow. it wasn’t machine made.. hmmm Then I look at the price tag and gasp. Nope.. was not going to give a Big named store that amount of money.. I can make this!!
I give you.. The DIY Crochet Handbag 🙂
The Handbag at the store was a neutral colored stiff but still on the soft side, cotton material. So off I went to find yarn similar to this handbag. I found several that were close but still not the exact texture. Then a light bulb went off in my head.. off to the hardware department I went..
Waalaa.. I found it. Cotton twine. This has the same texture and thickness of the “store” handbag and bonus .. it was 2.84 a ball. I grab a couple and off I went to create the look a like.
Half way through making this handbag, I was thinking about the texture and durability of this bag, then my mind started to wander and all of a sudden I said to myself.. Tye Dye!! Wouldn’t it be cool if you could custom dye your handbag.
After I completed the pattern I went to the craft store and picked up some t-shirt tye dye.
To be perfectly honest, I have never Tye Dyed anything before and after the initial excitement of getting the dye, I started to get a little nervous. I didn’t read the directions of the dye before I purchased and when it came time to make it.. eeekkk. This particular dye was for Large projects and required some math to calculate a smaller batch of dye. I recommend if you are going to dye your handbag to read the directions of several types of dye before you purchase.
The dye I used was 1 packet per Gallon of water.. I cut that down into 3rds and still had dye left over.
I also decided to make some swatches to test dye. So glad I did. The twine doesn’t soak up the dye as I thought it would have. It was almost like water repellent at first. I lightly sprayed water on the first area I was going to dye first… This worked out much better.
I noticed you can actually get some neat effects when spray water on the already dyed area.. it make the dye move and creep up the twine. I started with the darker dye first but you can try many different techniques with your swatches before applying to your handbag.
Cautions with the dye.. this is fabric dye and it will stain anything it gets on.. use gloves and it is best to dye outside where spills will not ruin anything. It was raining here when I went to dye so I did dye inside. I have a stainless steel sink so I used a cooling rack over my sink to dye. For drying I transferred the cooling rack to a old cookie sheet pan.
For some extra fun.. I made 2 coaster size swatches and let my husband and daughter design their own. It also gave me other ideas on how I wanted my bag to look.
When dyeing don’t worry about areas that arent covered completely with dye..the dye will spread out while drying. Also, keep in mind the color will lighting a bit also. The picture above is when the swatches and bag where wet.
Drying… Again preferably allow them to dry outside. I was late getting this post out because I didn’t not think about dry time. They barely dried while in the house. It wasnt til a day later when I could put them outside for a few hours in the sun that they finally dried. I Do Not recommend putting them in the drier.. the dye will destroy your drier.
These pictures are of the swatches and bag fully dried. As you can see the dye faded a bit and also the areas that did not have dye filled in with color.
I added some twine to the edges of the coasters the family made. Took a wire brush and combed out the twine and made little Rug coaster. Have some extra fun with this project. This little side project made me think back to crafts we did in school.. was a nice little break away from the everyday schedule 🙂
Crochet Handbag Pattern
This bag is done in the round. It has repetitive rows. It has 2 “special” need to know stitches.. Which are a Cluster and a DC2TOG. Below are a couple links for reference on how to do the “special” stitches.
Cluster.. Mama in a Stitch ….The Cluster for my pattern is only 3DC’s
DC2TOG… New Stitch a Day
Cluster2TOG..

Round 19.) SC around, Sl St into first SC and Finnish off.
Attaching Handles…
Depending on the type of handle you use, there is several ways to attach your Handles. On my handbag I choice 2 different ways you could attach them.
First photo is a single sewn, center hold. Second picture I placed additional wrapping on either side. Options are limitless on how you would like to attach yours.
Attach along the whole bottom half of handle, Partial attachment, etc.. Also… Keep in mind as to whether or not you want your handle “holder” to be dye’d or Natural. If you want it to match, make sure you dye some of your extra cord.
When attaching the handle you want to use a whole cluster.. So sew from bottom of cluster, up around handle and into top of same cluster and just keep going around and across the same row of clusters,  til your happy with the hold and look.
Get creative with your bag.. this is your creation and it needs your personal touch 🙂
I hope you have fun with this DIY Handbag and Please let me know if you have any questions. Those that would like to share your finished handbag I would love to see them… You can post them here in Comments or #wulfiesessentials on instagram 🙂

Difficult as this is for me to comprehend
This is martincooney.com post number 333
And for some reason it seemed an appropriate moment to take stock of exactly what MC.COM is really all about. After all, it all started way back when in the spring of 2013 as I recall, and at the time I don’t remember pouring too much extraneous content into the website, other than to document the life and times of a 21st Century Stone Banker Mason turned Stone Carver and Sculptor.
Three hundred and thirty three posts, ten thousand tagged-titled-and-hyper-linked photos, and dozens of videos later; the question begs, ‘just what is all this about, Martin?’ Well, let’s take a look at the stats, see just what people have been looking at and maybe we will find out.
TOP 30 POSTS
As of August 12, 2019

Now I do realize that while these numbers are tiny by internet standards they mean a lot to me, for I am always flattered and happy when people take time out of their busy day to click onto martincooney.com, but now, after so many years have elapsed since my debut on the internet in 2013 that I find that I have amassed over 350 illustrated posts and informational pages. Add that to the 10,064 hyperlinked photographs, plus the dozens of short videos and vast scale of this homespun website slowly wields into view.
Given the wide, and at times admittedly scatological nature of martincooney.com, even a cursory glance at the the above table makes it abundantly clear as to which two huge subjects dominate traffic: Colorado Yule Marble, and The North West Tuscan Way – or in other words, my circular journey from Pisa to Pisa, encompassing the Marble Quarries of Carrara along the way.
And although this would perhaps have come as something of a shock to me back in 2013, it now seems only natural; as each day more and more people from across the planet tune into a slew of posts, some of which were actually written several years ago, and some just the other day.

Perhaps given my rather unique position regarding hands-on knowledge gained by carving so much Yule marble; combined with my researched knowledge of the quarry’s long and storied history; together with a first-hand and well documented three month sojourn in and around the Carrara marble quarries; it is perhaps not surprising that these two topics would combine to dominate MC.COM. But you know what? I like it.
I like being able to not only impart valuable information to an inquiring public – especially when the audience is spread around the globe. But more than anything I like to offer up solutions based upon my particular insights to problems whereby I essentially see people quite often agreeing, while going round in circles, in that everyone claims both love and concern for the environment, the culture, the wildlife etcetera, but no steps with genuinely new solutions, except me! The answer lay in a way of carving called Direct Method – a means in which many artists use to carve impromptu sculpture. But I have pushed the boundaries way past such hit and miss applications to the point whereby by Direct Method may be utilized on an industrial scale in order to produce high quality hand carved marble bowls for instance; from what would ordinarily be deemed mere quarry waste. But that is another subject, and one I deal with at length in many posts under the category of The Story of Colorado Yule Marble. Please click on the tab above if you wish to catch up with events so far.
I am convinced that if everyone fully heard everyone else out then we would be well on our way to solving deep seated problems that only appear to be growing worse with each passing year. But I honestly feel as though such seemingly impassable obstacles can and will be addressed one day – and sooner rather than later. What I propose is to simply utilize all of the marble we have already quarried, and then make sure that all new marble is quarried in such a manner as is taken out up at the Yule quarry, whereby extraction rates of 70 to 80 percent are routine, and all the marble quarried is put to use in one manner or another.

It is one thing to read books, watch videos and generally talk the talk. It is another to step into the belly of the beast and take a good long look around, as I did in order to take the pictures you see above and below. Don’t worry – I took supreme caution when navigating the quarry roads, as by then I had been driving in Italy for long enough to know to give way to any and all oncoming trucks. But it was towards the end of the day, and no one seemed too bothered, and so on this occasion I had plenty of time to take a good look around and truly asses the situation.

What I discovered was that contrary to the Yule quarry’s tight little mile wide seam – some two or three hundred feet in height – the scene awaiting me from the vantage point central to the whole proceedings was quite breathtaking. For instead of the giant mountains of marble that I had imagined from a distance, the valley was actually comprised of mainly sandy rubble, with the marble appearing in thick seams, though a lot of it appeared cracked and generally distressed. And so in other words, these highly skilled quarriers were tasked with removing much in the way of plain ordinary dirt simply in order to get at the good stuff – hence the 75 percent accepted percentage of waste, as mentioned in the Business Insider video above.
But what is waste if it is all used one way or another? Then such quarries will simply be creating new space, and all that sand will be neatly sifted and sorted, the rocks and boulders sorted and sold. Even dirt has a price! Then, imagine just what spectacular homes these worn out seams would make. And that is just one idea of many that really needs to be discussed if we are not to close perfectly good quarries, and let the out-dated ones remain.

Carrara and Yule – Yule and Carrara, just what have these two fabulous marbles have in common, and what sets them worlds apart? That would seem to be the question on everyone’s lips as this upstart newcomer to the international marble scene continues to stir increased interest across the globe.
~ ~ ~
Tumblr media
~ ~ ~
Well, essentially what sets them ‘world’s apart’ is two-fold: firstly, it is a mater of size. To put it simply, Carrara marble quarries are so vast that they are often mistaken for snow-capped peaks by visitors to the nearby Mediterranean coast. So huge is the spectacle in fact that the quarries and their adjacent waste piles that they can clearly be seen from space.

Yep, that’s it, the whole thing – there is no more. This mile wide seam is just about it. It does however stretch for about three miles under the surface, but as the vein slopes at roughly 30 degrees the marble dives deeper and deeper under the Rockies as it goes.

And so, quite the contrast, eh? On one continent we have vast marble mountains that look like snow – in the case of Carrara. And over here in America – in the case of Yule, we have snow-capped mountains that look like marble, and a tiny little speck of marble that looks like snow.
~ ~ ~
Tumblr media
~ ~ ~
So how can this be? How can Carrara be simply here-there-and-everywhere, while Yule on the other hand may only be found perched on the side of one obscure little creek, 9,300 feet above sea level in the Colorado Rocky Mountain Elk Range?
Turns out there is a very simple explanation. Whereas Carrara was formed by what is termed ‘Regional Metamorphism’ as Africa’s tectonic plate squeezed itself onto and over its European neighbor, the marble was formed by a huge limestone layer being slowly crushed and churned into marble – the heat therefore being generated from the resulting friction created as continental plates ground together.
Tumblr media
Yule marble however was formed via Contact Metamorphism whereby a relatively small fleck (in comparison to Carrara) of Leadville limestone found itself engulfed by a huge mantel of molten magma, whereby it was crushed and churned at vastly higher temperatures in a process that turned practically 100 percent of the limestone into 95 percent pure white calcite marble.  A marble so pure in fact that it is now becoming renowned, prized and quite exalted for its incredible luminescence, thoroughbred markings, and truly incredible structural properties. Which is why Yule is now being named by many within the marble industry as ‘the most desirable, sought after and expensive marble in the world’ Which may come as a surprise to many, and cause alarm perhaps for others.
Well, the truth is it needn’t – cause alarm that is – to anyone. For the vast mountainous Carrara marble quarries can surely feel no real competition from such a minute speck of (dare I say it?) superior marble from half a world away. For that is what it is in relative terms; a speck. But what a speck, if you don’t mind me saying.
~ ~ ~
Tumblr media
~ ~ ~
From my experience there is practically nothing you cannot do with Yule – even the well-seasoned old blocks of stone that I salvaged in order to create my 67 piece Collection Series – the links to which are found in the various menus above and to the right of your screen.
This isn’t to say that Yule marble isn’t without its, shall we say moody side. I am only speaking from the position of a Direct Method carver, with but a couple of forays into carving from the cube, as we say. Even the unlikeliest of rough blocks can yield the most gorgeously delicate sculpture. And although much of my Curvilinear Marble Sculpture may appear extraordinarily delicate I can assure you that quite opposite is the case, with many of the larger bowls and sculptures spending several winters outdoors throughout many Colorado Rocky Mountain seasons.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
But getting back to the quarry (don’t worry, clicks on my sculpture will make the top 30 one day, you’ll see), what I really would like to do is set the record straight in several regards, mainly pertaining to the exceptional environmental credentials that I see taking place up at 9,300 feet in the Rockies. But to put it very briefly, Yule has a long and storied history in this valley, and much of it has been a struggle in every sense of the word. Many fortunes have been lost and lives ruined, even as the stone itself graced some of the finest homes, government buildings and monuments in the land, including of course the Lincoln Memorial.
But still, even as the stone itself gained notoriety for its unrivaled quality – which is why it was chosen for so many civic projects – it was losing money. At one time the Yule marble finishing mill was the largest of its kind in the world, but alas it wasn’t to be, and for 40 years the quarry lay shuttered and closed, eventually filling with millions of gallons of water just for good measure.

The fact of the matter was that, brilliant as this new super white, extraordinarily durable marble is – it turns out to be located in one of the toughest places in America from which to extract it. In other words; it was the very nature of the land that both created such marvelous marble that made its harvest too prohibitively expensive in practice. Quite the quandary.
But that was then, and this is now – for if every cloud has a silver lining this historic quarry now stands to gain massively from not only all of the technological advantages gained in recent decades within the quarrying industry, but it actually got to wipe the slate clean and start all over again.
This time however, and for the first time in a long and proud history stretching back over 125 years, two huge factors now loom large in that, perhaps for the first time ever, the quarry would appear adequately financed in order to quarry the marble in exemplary fashion.
In one fell swoop new owners Colorado Stone Quarries first act was to ditch all existing  equipment and bring in the very best, very latest and I am sure the most expensive quarrying equipment on the market. Next was to bring in the Italians. Not just any Italians by the way, but long-standing marble quarrying experts from guess where? Yep, Carrara! Where else?

And there you have it really – the difference between Yule and Carrara could not be starker in one sense, and yet so similar in others. So much so in fact that Red Graniti, parent company to Colorado Stone Quarries, has re-branded their top quality marble block “Calcatta”, and “Calcatta Lincoln”. High praise indeed when you think about it. According to various spokesmen associated with the company such exquisite marble such as found in the tiny Yule Creek is rare: very rare indeed. Whether they will ever grudgingly admit that Yule is not only the equal of Carrara but its better, well that may never happen, and I don’t blame them. But I will go on beating the drum for Yule as I really think that it is a quite spectacular stone well worthy of its semi-precious status and  proud title as Colorado State Rock.

And here I’ll leave you with one final thought: Yule is but a Beautiful Jewel when compared to most, if not all other marble quarries.  And just like any jewel it is by definition very rare indeed. As an example I point to the pictures above and below, where we see what is being billed as Europe’s largest marble quarry (which must make it the world’s largest I would assume), located and recently opened in Greece. What you will notice here perhaps is not only the uniform looking quality of the marble, but there is just so darn much of it. But what you should also notice is how little appears to be lost to waste, and therefore presents somewhat of a textbook case for replication across the marble industry – and indeed, dare I say it, across the Carrara marble region?
As I have explained here and in many posts and pages across martincooney.com, the way that Yule marble is being harvested, with harvest ratios of 75, 80 even 90 percent, such numbers I would imagine, are surely enough to please even the most ardent environmentalist to re-assess their objections, I would have thought.
For what have we once the quarry is exhausted and the seam quarried? Empty space lined with marble – what a fantastic living situation we could create for the modern day troglodyte! Fully equipped, well appointed marble apartments, with a view. I can see it now.

And so now, after around 350 posts and pages, I suppose I have found purpose in explaining to whoever may wander in to martincooney.com, just what the essential differences – and similarities – are between the world renowned Carrara marble, and its new, tiny, top quality rival from across the pond.
And even by reading this short post, watching the videos and taking in the pictures, I am sure that you will agree that you now know more on the subject than you ever did before?
Or perhaps you never even thought about Yule marble, or even Carrara for that matter; but don’t you find it all pretty fascinating? Course you do. I do, as you can see; and so stay tuned to martincooney.com and I will surely keep you informed, entertained and hopefully much wiser regarding the connections, similarities and contrasts between Yule and Carrara marble.
