Reaching Out
Codywan 4+1, Angst edition
Four times Cody felt Obi-Wan reach out to the Clones mind with the force, and one time Obi-Wan felt it slip away. (Order 66)
Alright here is the thing I was working on last night. It has been spell checked and my grammar shouldn’t be too bad. In hindsight this isn’t as good as I thought it was at midnight, but ain’t that just the way writing works? Anyway, I hope y’all enjoy it just the same!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1- In battle
The first time it happened, Cody had more pressing things to worry about, such as staying alive. He was, after all, in the middle of a firefight.
He had lost sight of the General some time ago, the Jedi disappearing in the mess and confusion of battle. The droids were numerous, far more then what they had expected for this campaign and much harder to get rid of then usual.
He’s taking cover behind a pile of debris, most likely a piece of a ceiling if the decorative patterns, half covered by dust, are any indication when it happens.
It feels unlike anything he has experienced before, and it's only looking back after the event that he's able to put any words to it at all. Like the setting sun, all golden and warm, if it were made into a blanket brushing over something deep inside of him. As quickly as the feeling comes, it vanishes, leaving him feeling odd. It's as if on some fundamental level the inherent shape of him has changed, both bigger and smaller.
A blaster bolt slamming into the concrete of his makeshift cover mere inches from his head draws Cody back into the fight and soon enough the strange occurrence pushed aside in favor of returning fire. Whatever it was, it doesn't happen again, and by the time he once again gets eyes on his Jedi, Cody has forgotten all about it.
2- In the mess hall
The next time it happens, Cody is in the mess hall eating the morning meal. It's nothing special, but its also not ration bars, and is therefore an improvement on any number of meals he has had to choke down in his admittedly short life. All around him his men and brothers are starting their day as well, some shuffle in a half-awake state, desperate for the morning cup of caff, others chat amongst themselves.
Cody nearly chokes on his food when the strange warm feeling brushes up against and invades his mind. His eyes water and his breathing goes a bit funny as he tries to clear his airway, and Cody would be damned if the sunny feeling doesn't seem to change in response. It becomes sharper, more focused, and the feeling of being enveloped become more intense. Whatever it is, it almost feels... concerned?
Someone thumps him on the back, and Cody's airway clears. The concerned edge to the intrusion in his mind lingers for a moment until seeming to sigh in relief and relaxing, making one last pass around the edge of his consciousness, all golden and comforting, before pulling away.
"You alright, Vod?" Rex asks as he takes a seat next to the other clone.
"Yeah," the darker haired clone responds after a moment’s hesitation. "Yeah, I'm good."
3- On the bridge
The third time it happens, Cody curses. Loudly.
The ship is under attack yet again, and just once Cody would like it if they could get through a battle without any major damage. Luck, unfortunately, does not appear to be on his side as yet another blow strikes against their forward shields. The whole ship rocks, and Cody grabs onto the holo table for stability, his eyes never once leaving the projected display of the battle that rages around them.
The feeling slams into his mind with all the finesse of a rancor and the curse that comes out of his mouth turns several heads. Where before the feeling had always been one of a calm soothing nature, this time it rages like a burning frost. It screams warning and caution and to move, force help him, move.
His mind comes to a conclusion in an instant, trusting this strange sensation for reasons he can't fully articulate except that it feels safe and familiar.
"GET DOWN!"
Without his helmet he must rely on his own voice to reach the men around him, and the command bellows out with as much authority as Cody can muster. The men scramble to comply just as another, more powerful, blast slams into their deflector shields. This time the shields fail, and Cody's head collides with the edge of the table before him. It's funny, but as his vision slowly goes dark, Cody would swear he could hear General Kenobi calling his name.
4 - In Medical
Consiousness returns slowly. It takes a few seconds before the events of the battle catch up with him, and when they do, Codys eyes fly open as he tries to push himself into a sitting position.
Mistake, that was a mistake.
Pain assaults his head at both the movement and the harsh white lighting of the med bay. He closes his eyes with a groan and lowers himself back down onto his pillows, mentally telling himself that if someone needs him, they know where to find him.
"Cody?"
A warm hand on one of his own draws the clones attention away from the pounding in his skull and Cody opens his eyes, more cautiously this time, and although his eyes are slits, Cody easily makes out the familiar face of his General.
"How do you feel?"
The pain medication he is on has left his mouth painfully dry so takes a second before Cody can get his mouth to cooperate with him, and when he does his voice is raspy from disuse.
"M fine, sir. Head hurts a bit thats s'all"
His words slur slightly in a way that Cody knows means he both has a concussion. This time when the sunny feeling comes, it's gentle. Like a cool washcloth being placed on his forehead. The pain behind his eye’s eases, and the light doesn't feel as harsh as it did a second ago. Cody sighs in relief turning his head slightly as if that will allow him greater contact with the non-existent sensation.
The presence seems to laugh, and Cody is aware of Obi-Wan beside him huffing quietly with amusement.
Suddenly, things click into place.
"Oh,"
Beside him, Obi-Wan lifts an eyebrow.
"Are you sure you're alright Commander."
Between the head trauma and the painkillers, thinking is hard, and words are even harder, but for Obi-Wan, Cody tries. With his free hand, the clone points to his head, squinting against the bright light and doing his best to make eye contact with the Jedi beside him.
"That's you. I wondered."
And because his mouth is no longer obeying him, he whispers "Feels nice."
Cody could be imagining the slight blush that dusts the Jedi's cheeks at the admission, but he's too tired to truly care.
Now that he knows the strange sensation is actually his Jedi and not some side effect from brain trauma, Cody takes the time to properly assesses the force presence. There is something quintessentially Obi-Wan about the way it feels, something in the cool brightness that reminds him of the breeze on a summer day.
He is almost asleep when something occurs to him.
"You've been checking in on me."
That time on the battlefield when they had lost contact with each other, on the bridge in the last battle when Obi-Wan had practically screamed warning in his ear. Even, Cody realizes, that time in the mess hall. In all cases the Jedi was checking in, either to see how he was doing or to make sure he was still alive.
The blush that now decorates the Jedi's face is unmistakable. For the life of him Cody can't figure out if the embarrassment is from being found out, or if the act itself is what the Jedi finds cringeworthy.
"Ah, yes, well... I should actually apologize for that."
"It's alright, sir. It was startling at first but now that I know it's you..." Cody shrugs as best he can given his circumstances, "Just warn a guy first, yeah?"
+1 (ANGST) As a stranger (order 66)
Astride Boga, Obi-Wan feels something shift in the force. It's a familiar, if nauseating feeling, one that he associates with danger and trouble. While the battle had been going well, with Grievous dead and a good chunk of the firing out of the way, Obi-Wan had been hoping that taking the rest of the planet would be simple. What's worse is where the force is telling him trouble is coming from. Not further ahead in the canyon where scores of droids wait, but from behind him.
Without hesitation, the Jedi reaches out in the force, searching for the ever-steady signature of his Commander. It's difficult at this distance to pinpoint the clone he wants, but Obi-Wan pushes through until at last he finds the man he is looking for.
His bond with Cody is a as strong as any force bond can be when only one half of the pair is force sensitive. Its tenuous, chaotic at the best of times, but a constant in the Jedi’s mind. It should be easy enough to reach out and check in on his commander, but something is resisting Obi-wan.
When he does find him, Obi-wan examines the force signature for any signs of distress and finds nothing. The clone feels like the warmth of sun baked earth with a touch of the sea, free from the sour tinge of injury. His relief at finding Cody alive and unharmed is short lived, as the clones force presence is violently shut away behind a durasteel mental shield. It’s as if everything that makes Cody unique is drained away by a strong vortex. What is left behind is hardly recognizable as the Commander.
He has just enough time for dread to fill him before the first canon blast slams into the stone next to him. Boga startles, and that more than anything spurs him into action. He spares one backward glance at where his men stand, flanking the canons. As he fly's away, the tattered mental bond echoes back a single phrase.
Execute Order Sixty-Six, six, six...

OC Facts With Lucky Hawke
Tumblr media
I was tagged by @isalavhenan, thanks again for the tag. I love being able to rant about Hawke so thanks for letting me.
PLACE IN SOCIETY
✖ FINANCIAL – wealthy / moderate / poor / in poverty
Hawke never knew hunger until he came to Kirkwall. His father ended up being conscripted into the Grey Wardens at the end of Leandra and Malcolm’s love affair. Though Malcolm could legally be a mage his children couldn’t and so moving around was necessary to avoid detection as well as for his job but because of the Grey Wardens the family was well taken care of. Because Malcolm was elven, even if they could afford better houses, they were usually forced to live out in the country where the laws aren’t as strict about those things. After Malcolm died, the budget was much tighter without a Grey Warden salary, but they at least had their family home in Lothering. When they lost it, the Hawke’s had to get used to hardship in Kirkwall. It wasn’t like Lothering where they could hunt freely for game in the Kocari wilds and forage from their garden when the month was tight. It was a year in poverty that Hawke was determined to dig himself out of, no matter what it took. Though even after his success with the Deep Roads and he had all the gold he’d need, it was still a difficulty to get his family’s estate in his name. For 3 years he would build connection and influence enough to get the court to recognize his claim as legal.
✖ MEDICAL – fit / moderate / sickly / disabled / disadvantaged
From a young age, Carver, Bethany, and Lucky would recieve strict Grey Warden training as well as Malcolm’s mental training. Lucky is very fast and often casts haste on himself to move even faster. Though he is slight of build, he is strong even without his magic to enhance him and often doesn’t need his magic to win a fight.
✖ CLASS OR CASTE – upper / lower / middle / working / unsure
With Leandra’s training in courtly etiquette and grace, the Hawke children often were able to charm guests with their manners and wit which helped make a better impression of their mixed race family. The tensions of race and class often came up with Hawke growing up and learning that sometimes passing as human didn’t always shield him from the realities of being elven especailly in school. Hawke was often hyperaware and dysphoric about his race, unsure how to navigate what it meant to be something in between. From a young age it was ingrained in him that he must assimilate into human culture because he’s human, even if other humans don’t exactly see it the same. Meeting Merrill, he found an ally in his struggle to identify with his other roots.
After the Deep Roads and his nobility officially recognized he enters upper class society but it is clear that the other nobles do not see him as equal, until he defeats the Arishok and becomes Champion. By then Hawke has become disillusioned by the upper class lifestyle and decides that the best course would be to become Viscount, if only to have a real chance at changing things in Kirkwall.
✖ EDUCATION – qualified / unqualified / studying
Though Lucky had a loving home, it was often strict and full of studies of all sort which he resented. His mother would try to tutor him in the Game which is the only lesson he refused to learn because he never thought he’d need it. Malcolm was absent a lot due to his work, but when he was home, time was often spent teaching Lucky and Bethany magical training. He knows a lot of things from his forced education, and when he’s truly interested will sometimes lose focus trying to solve a magical problem. However he’s bad at articulating things at times and sometimes forgets to use his mind when he solves problems.
FAMILY
✖ MARITAL STATUS – married, happily / married, unhappily / engaged  / partnered / divorced / widow or widower / separated / single / it’s complicated
✖ CHILDREN – has children / no children / wants children / adopted children
Hawke ends up having a Dalish wedding with Merrill, a Chantry wedding with Fenris, and Isabela and Hawke remained lovers. Merrill and Hawke have a daughter named Aerys.
✖ FAMILY – close with siblings / not close with siblings / has no siblings / siblings are deceased / it’s complicated
✖ AFFILIATION – orphaned / adopted / disowned / raised by both parents / it’s complicated
Hawke was closer to his father than his mother which was difficult because Malcolm wasn’t exactly accepting of Lucky’s trans identity. Since they were young they felt weird about their gender but weren’t very concious about their dysphoria until he started puberty. He discovered he was queer young and had to be in the closet about it because the family has strong Chantry beliefs. When they decided to magically transition, he asked for support with Bethany to help him transition at least while he was at school though he still had to ask for help from his father to master shapeshifting which he struggled with for a long time. Carver found out and though he thought it was a bad idea, he reluctantly supported Lucky too. This eventually culminated into Lucky getting found out by his parents which started a fight. To make a story short it gets ugly but eventually Leandra and then Malcolm come to terms with who Lucky is. When Lucky wanted a new name he asked his father to rename him, and his father renamed him “Lucky because I’m lucky to have you in my life.”   Neither of his parents encouraged interest in his elven heritage and so often he was told to pride himself in being and Amell and a Hawke. When Hawke took back his estate he renamed House Amell to House Hawke, partly as a fuck you to all the nobles that gave him a hard time and kept calling him “Lord Amell” but also because he knew he would never be an Amell. He would never be anything other than the person he fought to become.
TRAITS & TENDENCIES
✖ disorganized / organised / in between
Organization is Lucky’s enemy. His organization is *stick this into a void and deal with it later*
✖ close-minded / open-minded / in between
Hawke can admit when he’s wrong. “I’m just not often.” He uses blood magic to augment his shapeshifting and other magic as well. He is super wary of Chantry folk and the templars, templars being obvious, but in the Chantry that’s where some of his most racist bullying came from. He’s a very chill person most of the time, but once he’s made a bad judgement of you it can be hard to change his mind.
✖ cautious / reckless / in between
One of Hawke’s biggest weaknesses is his temper makes it hard to think before he acts. To save his family and friends he will dive headfirst into danger or use incredibly dangerous magic forgetting that he’s not invincible.
✖ patient / impatient / in between
Hawke can’t be bored. Their short attention span leads them into trouble.
✖ outspoken / reserved / in between
Hawke has a hard time holding his tongue. Impulsively saying whatever comes to mind also gets him into trouble.
✖ leader / follower / in between
Because Hawke is impatient he will sometimes take control if no one is stepping up. He doesn’t like the burden of leadership, though and doesn’t mind hearing other people’s opinions. He is also stubborn so while he won’t force anyone to follow him, he’s not afraid to break from the pack to get where he thinks he wants to go.
✖ sympathetic / unsympathetic / in between
Hawke is very empathetic and likes to make people to feel at ease around him. He often tries to joke to break tension which doesn’t always work.
✖ optimistic / pessimistic / in between
Lucky has fits of despair that he attempts to bury with stubborn optimism. He doesn’t give up easily, though. He will endlessly look for a solution, though if he comes up to a wall that won’t budge, it will sometimes leave him spiraling.
✖ hardworking / lazy / in between
If Lucky is interested in the project he will work the hardest at it, giving it his utmost focus. If he’s not, it’s a struggle and he will procrastinate or give up.
✖ cultured / uncultured / in between
Hawke learned “culture” from Leandra. That doesn’t mean he will choose to use it.
✖ loyal / disloyal / in between
Hawke is loyal almost to a fault. You mess with someone he loves, you might lose a tooth. His friend’s enemies are his enemies and he’s fiercly protective.
✖ faithful / unfaithful / in between
Hawke is poly but he is faithful. It just the boundaries are different in his relationships.
SEXUALITY & ROMANTIC INCLINATION
✖ SEXUALITY – heterosexual / homosexual / bisexual / asexual / pansexual / omnisexual / demisexual
✖ SEX – sex repulsed / sex neutral /sex favorable
Sex is one of Hawke’s vices so he does occasionally have casual safe sex with hot strangers, but more than sex he craves closeness and connection with people.
✖ ROMANCE – romance repulsed / romance neutral / romance favorable
Hawke would say his heart’s a slut. There are many people that make his heart thump. Hawke often struggled with the idea of finding “the one” because there were so many people he felt romantically connected to to the point where he thought something was wrong with him.
✖ SEXUALLY – sexually adventurous / sex experienced / naive / inexperienced / curious / uninterested
Hawke is usually up for new experiences and often uses his shapeshifting and magic in the bedroom (with people he can trust)
ABILITIES
✖ COMBAT SKILLS – excellent / good / moderate / poor / none
Though Hawke can easily kill with their blood magic they often use it to incapacitate, and wipe enemies minds. Killing makes the demons whisper louder so if he can avoid it he will.
✖ LITERACY SKILLS – excellent / good / moderate / poor / none
Though Hawke is smart he struggled in school especailly reading. It took a lot of effort to get the grades his parents expected of him, on top of all the other training that was expected of him.
✖ ARTISTIC SKILLS – excellent / good / moderate / poor / none
Lucky started writing poetry in his diary when he was young. Karaoke was something the family did a lot so Lucky started writing lyrics and eventually started making music on his computer. He still enjoys karaoke.
✖ TECHNICAL SKILLS – excellent / good / moderate / poor / none
I looked it up and I either don’t understand this question or he has none lol

You’re My Best Friend (2/4)
Tumblr media
Can you believe it? I'm posting again just one day later! I had to take advantage of the moment, now that it seems that my muse has decided to make an appearance. I hope you like this second part, which contains a bit of backstory, and some cute moments between Killian, Emma, and Henry.
@saraswans ,  @onceuponaprincessworld , thank you both for your continuous support. Sara the second part of your gift is here!
(This is unbeta’d, so I apologize in advance for the many mistakes and nonsense)
Summary:  Emma shares her passion for Queen with her best friend Killian, with her son and with the rest of her friends. What will happen when Henry encourages them to participate in a Queen karaoke party? Will Emma (or Killian) finally dare to express her (or his) hidden feelings through the lyrics of a song?
Rating: T — Words count: ~3k
First Part —A03 — Ffnet
A few hours later, Emma was in her apartment enjoying another of their traditions on Sunday, movie and popcorn afternoon with her two favorite people in the world, her son and her best friend. They had established that tradition long ago, when Henry was introduced to the Marvel universe and Star Wars. Since then, every Sunday afternoon without exception they met there and enjoyed the good company and their favorite movies.
They had been doing the same thing for a long time, but even so, Emma couldn't help but feel some disbelief at the fact that, despite her history and her need to protect her heart after her traumatic past, she would have been able to open herself up in such a way to a person other than Henry.
That level of blind trust had only been achieved with Killian. The idea of snuggling on the couch with someone who knew all (almost) her secrets without entering a spiral of panic was unthinkable with another person, but with Killian, everything felt so natural, so right, that Emma treasured those moments as something precious.
In fact, that very couch had witnessed confessions of their tragic past on both sides sprinkled with laughter an tears. They had also gotten drunk and even both had fallen asleep together on some occasions, waking hours later wrapped in a blanket that wasn't there previously (Henry's work, of course).
On this occasion, the image on the screen was completely forgotten, going into the background, since Henry was so excited about the Queen event that, since they arrived at the apartment, he had not stopped talking and talking, even though he would have to settle for enjoying it from a distance. Killian —how could it be otherwise?— got along with him. If there was a bigger Queen fan than Henry, that was Killian. The complicity between them was evident, something that Emma valued more than anything and for which she would be eternally grateful. Luckily, his son would never miss a father figure, either in Killian's persona or in that of the other two men around, David (their neighbor and the closest thing to a brother Emma would ever have) and Robin (David's best friend and former Killian's roommate)
Maybe that's where her son's love for the band came from. He had grown up listening to that music since he was a little boy. Well, rather since Killian arrived in the States from England seven years ago and settled in as Robin's roommate in his apartment. It had been him, in fact, who had infected them with his love for Queen in the first place. You could say that the moment Killian had entered their lives, hadn't done it alone, but with Freddie and the band as partners. Now even Henry associated some events with Queen songs and had incorporated some verses into his usual vocabulary.
Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?
If you wanna have a good time, just give me a call
I want it all, and I want it now
And his favorite, whenever he won playing video games or just passed to the next level, he stood with his arms raised in triumph while singing loudly. 'We are the champions!'
"Are you sure you don't want to sing, Mom? It'll be fun!"
"Nope. I'm not singing, kid."
"Not even a song with the group?" Killian asked in a gentle way, nudging her softly with his shoulder. Her lips drew a tight smile as she glanced at him and denied with an imperceptible shake of her head. She appreciated the gesture, his subtle way of assuring that everything would be all right, that she would be accompanied on stage. But still, the trauma she brought from the past was too paralyzing.
Killian knew the reason why she wasn't able to get on stage and sing. That was one of the first confessions she had shared with him on that very couch one night, between shots of rum while they both hummed The Show Must Go On.
He had told her that her voice was magnificent and that maybe she should consider dedicating herself to singing professionally. She had been aware that it had been nothing more than an innocent compliment, but she couldn't help but snort as she shook her head and, after taking a shot in one gulp, she had explained the reasons why that would never happen.
Once upon a time, when she was a little girl she'd had the opportunity to participate in the annual school festival. Emma had clung to that opportunity with all her strength since her dream had always been to get on stage and shine even if it was only for a couple of minutes. It didn't matter if she had to return to her bland and lonely life afterward.
Emma hadn't always been given this chance, jumping from one foster home to the next one or to a group home, never staying the time necessary to form some sort of bond. This time, though, a small ray of hope had appeared among the storm clouds that always accompanied her.
During the weeks leading up to the festival, she had been rehearsing relentlessly, determined that her performance would be perfect. When the day arrived, she had bounced with excitement, the adrenaline rushing through her veins causing her stomach to flutter as her heart pounded in her chest.
All that excitement had gone out the window just a few minutes before going on stage, when she heard two other girls gossiping about her. They had laughed at her and her nervousness while saying that no matter how hard she tried, no one would be there to see her, no one would cheer her up, no one would congratulate her at the end of the day. She could pretend she was a star for a couple of minutes, but when she came down from the stage, she would be the same invisible girl, the same orphan girl she had always been.
Once she stood in the middle of the stage, her throat had closed, leaving her unable to articulate any words as tears of humiliation ran down her cheeks. Not only had her dream of singing vanished in an instant, but the embarrassment and misery she had felt had generated the trauma that had accompanied her ever since.
That sense of loneliness had almost completely disappeared. First, with Henry's arrival and later with the rest of the people she had met along the way and who had accepted her despite her issues. Now her heart was occupied with the love received by her son and her friends, her unconventional family. She also had a source of unceasing love to offer. Even so, that little thorn was still stuck in a corner of her heart, causing a paralyzing fear. Maybe at some point, she would feel sufficiently protected by her loved ones to get rid of that thorn, but that moment had not yet arrived.
Killian put a protective arm over her shoulders, drawing her to him, perhaps perceiving that her old ghosts of the past were hovering in her head. "It's a shame, because there's a song that suits you perfectly." Emma appreciated his attempts, never ignoring what troubled her, but using a tone casual enough to make her feel safe, easing the tension as he managed to get her ghosts back into the recesses of her mind.
"Does it have anything to do with the yellow color?" Henry asked, an incipient smirk blooming on his face.
"You've got it, lad."
Her brows furrowed in confusion, pulling back a bit to look at Killian as she bit her lower lip. "What are you talking about?"
"Why, 'I'm In Love With My Car', of course."
"Really?" She scoffed while directing a suspicious look at the two of them. Henry chuckled in the armchair next to her as Killian's smirk grew wider. "How's that?"
Killian shrugged. "Otherwise it wouldn’t be understood that you still have that atrocious contraption that you call a vehicle."
"Hey, what's wrong with my Bug?" She hit him in the arm with the back of her hand while her scowl deepened.
"Oi, Swan, there's no need for getting violent." He rubbed the area where she had hit him while his lips turned down in an exaggerated pout. “Accept it, love, your car is a minuscule metal trap."
Two could play this game, so Emma rushed to fight back. "I didn't hear you complain when you needed a driver at the beginning when you arrived at The States because you didn't dare to drive on the other side of the road." She crossed her arms while raising an eyebrow in triumph.
This time it was Killian who frowned in an exasperated manner. "That wasn’t the reason at all. I just didn’t have a car at the time."
"Whatever."
Their discussion was cut off when they both heard the sound of a shutter release and turned in Henry's direction.
He ignored them for a moment, typing something on his phone. Then he simply shrugged his shoulders at their scrutiny. "What? You two guys are kind of cute while arguing. I thought the others would like to see it."
Emma's eyes widened as Killian mumbled at her side. "Remind me why we let your lad join the group chat."
"Because I'm cool." Henry raised his eyebrows, a smile pulling at his lips in a gesture too adorable for his own good, causing her heart to melt a bit in the process.
After their little discussion about her beloved car, they continued their talk, trying to match the other members of the group with the most appropriate songs for each of them. Henry seemed to be the only one who didn't hesitate in his predictions while assigning songs to the rest of their friends. His strange occurrences caused them to burst into laughter in more than one occasion, while he assured them that he would be right and that he wanted, once again, graphic proofs of it.
A few hours later, after enjoying pizza in their usual Sunday dinner, Killian finally left to his own apartment. After closing the door, Emma leaned against the smooth surface as she couldn't help a smile of contentment appear on her face while her heart fluttered in her chest. Both Killian and Henry had the ability not only to see through her armor but to make her walls fall down, showing herself with no need for masks. These evenings with her two favorite people, sharing laughter, memories, and complicity, always brought her that feeling of stability and security that she had longed for all her life.
Only when Henry cleared his throat did she realize that she was leaning against the door with a lost look and a goofy smile adorning her face. She pressed her lips together and forced herself to focus, glancing at her son.
 "What?"
"Nothing ... It's just that, if by chance you changed your mind about singing…”
“That’s not happening, kid.”
“I know, but…” Henry made an exaggerated pause to make sure he got her attention. “…Just in case you changed your mind, I’ve already chosen the most appropriate song for you, besides the one with the car involved, of course.”
She tried to resist, especially since the mischievous glance he was directing at her didn’t bode well, but finally, her curiosity won. After letting out a heavy sigh, she asked, “and what would it be?”
Before answering, Henry raised an eyebrow in a gesture perhaps too much like the one of certain British guy. “I’d choose You’re my Best Friend.”
Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, she wasn't getting the reason why Henry would choose that song when it wasn’t Queen’s best-known verse and wasn’t even one of her favorites.
“Don’t you want to know why?”
She rolled her eyes, realizing that Henry had gotten her to fall into the trap with his enigmatic games while teasing her, something he had learned, once again, from, precisely, her best friend. Something clicked in her brain at that moment, a strange sensation washing over her as her stomach tightened into knots, anticipating what the possible response would be, but still, she couldn’t help asking. “Why?”
Henry’s face split into a giant grin. “Because Killian will be there.”
"Yeah, he'll be there and he's my best friend, but..." Emma's voice trailed off as she realized what her son meant, the lyrics of the song echoing in her brain, causing her heart to skip a beat.
I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
Oh, you're my best friend
She gasped, feeling a flush creep up her neck to her cheeks. She shook her head in disbelief. In no way was she going to have this kind of conversation with her son. Absolutely not.
She did not have time for a reply, though. Just as she took a deep breath trying to pull herself together, Henry continued.
"I'd have chosen 'I Was Born to Love You', but Uncle David just confirmed me that he and Mary Margaret have already picked it for them, so..." Henry shrugged and then put his phone in front of her eyes, showing David's message.
"Oh my god..." She muttered under her breath, as she felt her cheeks burn again. She forced herself to take a deep breath before answering her son, ignoring the flutter of her stomach and the frantic beating of her heart. "Killian and I are just friends, kid. You already know it."
"I know, I know, that's what you keep saying, but you like him and he likes you." He replied as if it were the most obvious answer. It was evident that he wasn't going to give up so easily.
This was not the first time Henry acted as a matchmaker with the two of them, but until then it had been nothing more than an innocent child's play. This time, however, his face was marked by an expression of determination, while his eyes glowed in a special way.
Her brows knit together while wondering what could have changed for Henry to take up his plan so insistently. Her eyes narrowed as she cast a scrutinizing glance at her son, trying to discern what was going on in his head. An idea popped up in her mind then, causing a sense of guilt to wash over her. What if her son was afraid of losing Killian in some way? What if he was just trying to make sure that Killian would stay by his (their) side one way or another?
"Henry..." She tried, but he cut her shortly.
"How long have you known Killian? I don't even remember not having him around. You have nothing to fear, Mom." Henry insisted, debunking all her excuses by using only a handful of words.
Henry was right, of course. Killian had come into their lives when Henry was only five years old and she was still trying to survive, heartbroken after the abandonment and betrayal of Neal, Henry's father. He, on the other hand, had fled London following in the footsteps of his friend Robin after the death of his girlfriend, Milah.
At that time, both had been so emotionally broken that, even though the attraction between them had been evident from the beginning, they were content to seek refuge in each other, forming an unbreakable friendship, bringing Emma the security and stability that she needed.
"Things are not that simple, Henry... Besides... Killian has made it clear that we're just friends... he does not..." Emma paused, not really knowing how to continue without revealing how she really felt, trying that her voice did not show her vulnerability, her fear of rejection and that their dynamic would change forever if she dared to take the next step.
Henry rolled his eyes before answering. "I may just be only twelve, but even I can see that Killian looks at you the same way David looks at Mary Margaret. He's just waiting for you, Mom."
Another thought crossed her mind at that moment, causing her knees to weaken and her stomach to drop to her toes. "You haven't talked about this with him, have you?" She muttered hating the hint of insecurity in her voice.
"Of course not, but I'm quite perceptive." His lips drew a reassuring smile before continuing. "And no, don't worry, I haven't suggested any songs to him. Yet."
He approached her and reached out, giving her arm an affectionate squeeze. "I just want you to be happy, Mom."
The corners of her lips rose slightly, while she gave him a look full of affection, her chest bursting of pure love towards her son. "I am happy. I have you, I have Killian and all our friends. I don't need anything else." Without waiting for an answer, she pulled Henry toward her, wrapping him in a tight embrace.
She wasn't singing, definitely, but after the conversation with her son, she couldn't help thinking what song Killian would choose, wondering if he would be brave enough for the both of them to express his feelings even if it was through the lyrics of a song.
New verses resounded again in her head. Maybe the time had come, maybe thanks to Queen she would find the necessary strength to take a leap of faith and risk opening her heart again.
So take a chance with me
Let me romance with you
I'm caught in a dream
And my dream's come true
So hard to believe
This is happening to me
An amazing feeling

Best Motorcycle Knee And Shin Guards Reviews
1. Shift Racing Enforcer
Tumblr media
Since its launch in 2012, this model has been on the lips of motorcyclists around the world. The product takes the cake when it comes to safety, bearing in mind that it has been built with a high impact plastic casing. In addition, it comes with all the features that one could ask for in a motorcycle shinguard. From the padded backrest with ventilated foam to a pivoting two-piece design that manages to adjust to the cyclist's movement, whatever; the Shift Racing Enforcer has it. In addition, the double elastic adjustment straps make it easy for users to easily customize the products according to their physical characteristics. More than a hundred and forty people took the time to write positive comments from Amazon regarding the quality and convenience of this alternative. It seems to be well regarded for the value it offers for the price. Pros These shin guards provide a secure fit thanks to their double elastic adjustment straps that work to maintain a firm grip around the legs so that the gear does not rise or fall. These black shin guards also have Velcro fasteners that facilitate their sliding, so you do not lose anything of the action in the field during the game. This is a unique product with a special one-size-fits-all design to eliminate guesswork about what dimensions to choose for you. The innovative two-piece pivoting design allows the shin guards to be flexible enough to adapt to the user's movement and to avoid any movement around the legs once safely locked. The ventilated foam that forms the padded backrest ensures comfort so that the protective cover does not get embedded in the skin of the legs to cause pain or abrasiveness of any kind. The padded backrest also features an abrasion-resistant joint to keep the shin guards in place without causing irritation or chafing on the legs. At the same time, it offers optimal protection. Cons According to one user, this product could have been better if it had come with a strap on top, which is used to tighten the knee area. Check Price 2. Troy Lee Designs KGL 5450
Tumblr media
The Shift Racing Enforcer and the Troy Lee Designs KGL 5450 differ on many levels. This second best option can be a bit difficult to choose since it is not a universal shinguard and requires accurate measurement by the person trying to use it. Starting today, the unit can be purchased in sizes ranging from extra small to large. In addition to the lack of convenience that comes with the sizing process, the model has many undeniable advantages. For example, the KGL 5450 is very convenient to use and relatively easy to put on. As for security, although there may be better options, the KGL 5450 still does a good job on this account. The model has a stratum foam that is able to articulate with the areas of the body that require the greatest amount of protection. The reviewers characterize the product as comfortable and incredibly light. Pros Suitable for motorcyclists, these shin guards help the rider to drive with confidence without worrying that a sudden fall on the road results in broken shins due to unexpected driving events. Ideal for acrobatics runners, the shin guards are equipped with the patented Shock Doctor technology that protects the lower legs against pain and injuries during any unexpected event while driving. Thanks to the legendary X-Fit technology, shin guards feature a wraparound support combined with an elastic mesh sleeve for reliable comfort and fit without the need for cumbersome, bulky straps. Built with Strata foam, the shin guards are articulated with the complex areas of the body so as not to limit the mobility of the legs while guaranteeing reliable protection against impacts. The shin guards also have the integrated Vent-trak system that propels the air through revolutionary flexible channels to make the surface of the skin breathe and ensure a sense of freshness. Cons Care should be taken so that the thread does not fall apart when the shin guards are washed. Check Price 3. Shift Racing Enforcer Motocross
Tumblr media
As is the case with the other Shift Racing option we have shown above, this comes with all the advantages of a high-end product. On the one hand, it makes it easier for motorcyclists to attend to their activity without worrying about the quality of their protection. Secondly, it is easy to put on and comfortable so that it does not interfere with the whole experience and does not diminish the amount of fun the user feels while traveling on his motorcycle. Like the aforementioned model manufactured by the same brand, it has a back that has abrasion-resistant joints. As far as the amount of critical praise collected by this unit is concerned, it might be worth noting that it does not even come close to the appreciation of 10010533. While it may not have the same excellent characteristics, this model is the trick. He does the work, and is strong and comfortable enough for many people to get rid of him. Pros Because driving and motorcycle racing can be filled with a variety of dangers and accidental falls, these shin guards help cycling enthusiasts prepare better for any eventuality on the trail. These shin guards are an exciting part of your biker outfit because they provide a solid testament to your dedication to protect every part of your body from damage or injury while you enjoy the ride, be it recreation or competition. The high impact plastic shell provides a high level of protection by dissipating the impact forces that are at play during hard driving action or inconsistencies in the cycling terrain such as flying pebbles or solid gravel masses. With the innovative two-piece pivoting design, the free movement of the legs is not hampered so you can work with your bike and control it easily. Considering how the padded and ventilated backrest has abrasion-resistant joints, you can be sure that the projectile will not bite the skin on your legs and cause pain, bruising or cuts. Cons In order not to make the straps fall on the upper part of the calf, care must be taken to tighten them sufficiently but not too much. Check Price
Top features to consider:
Buy dirt bike shin guards these days can be quite an adventure. After all, the market is full of products and new ones are coming out every year. If you want to make the best call, take a look at the following guide that we have gathered for your consideration. Do not forget to read all the information you may stumble upon in order to make an informed decision. 1. Type of protection The shin guards for serious motorcyclists do not have the appearance or design of those that are now used in various sports, such as football. On the contrary, they have a heavier construction and are sometimes made of high impact materials that can withstand the collision with the ground in the event of an accident. The best shin guards for motorcycles can be divided into two categories: knee pads and knee pads. During your shopping trip, you will see that even though it is called 'knee protection', the product is also long enough to cover your shin. The guards are full coverage products, as they do an excellent job of protecting the entire area that could be injured. The only drawback of choosing this type is that they can keep the knee area and the shin a bit hot. The knee pads are mainly focused on keeping the knee in the correct position so that the kneecap does not move due to a rupture of ligaments or anything else that may occur during an accident. It is up to you to choose the right one, but for security reasons, we recommend the full coverage alternative. 2. Safety As we mentioned earlier, some products may be safer than others. Knee pads are simply better than their counterparts because they can protect the entire area, including the user's skin. If you have trouble understanding if the product you want to buy is safe enough to use, simply review some of the best reviews of motorcycle shin guards and discover the opinions of other buyers. 3. Ease of use and comfort It goes without saying that the protectors you end up choosing should be comfortable and comfortable to wear. Some have breathable foam, while others are made with artificial materials. In addition, the straps used to hold the units in place must be efficient and customizable so that they do not exert too much pressure on the shin area and damage local circulation. Next Previous Ezra Parzybok says his book aims to clear up confusion about medical marijuana. Ezra Parzybok says his book aims to clear up confusion about medical marijuana. As its medical uses evolve and marijuana becomes legally available for recreation in Massachusetts, an area cannabis consultant is working to fill an information hole he thinks is undermining its use. “In our culture, marijuana is known for all the bad reasons because of its psychoactive abilities,” said Ezra Parzybok of Northampton, author of Cannabis Consulting: Helping Patients, Parents, and Practitioners Understand Medical Marijuana (University Press of New England.) “Nobody has been articulating the science and providing an educational basis for medical marijuana.” Parzybok, 43, whose book is scheduled to be released in July 2018, is a former teacher, certified as a cannabis consultant through the online Holistic Cannabis Academy. He has been researching medical marijuana, its effect on the body, and its various applications for the last five years. “The book contains a full spectrum of information from its harmful effects to its great benefits, and provides personal stories about people using cannabis beneficially,” he said in a recent interview at his home where his business is based. “It also talks about how very easy it is to produce medical marijuana on your own.” Parzybok is inspired by what he sees as a troubling lack of knowledge that affects the way that marijuana is regulated, dispensed, used and abused. “Between the federal stance on cannabis and the stoners who have been growing and using marijuana for years, there is an enormous gap,” he said. Parzybok believes science-based information can bridge that gap and enable potential users of medical marijuana, caregivers, parents and physicians to make informed decisions. Focusing on marijuana’s ability to alter a user’s mental state stands in the way of exploring its medicinal properties such as easing pain, anxiety and insomnia, Parzybok says. Lack of guidance A report issued earlier this year by the National Academy of Science Engineering and Medicine notes that while many studies have examined cannabis use, results have not effectively reached policy makers, health care providers and state health officials. This, says Parzybok, has led to confusion and frustration. “In the state of Massachusetts, there are no regulations requiring doctors to understand dosing or to know advanced medical marijuana techniques,” he said. When a patient receives a medical marijuana certification card, Parzybok points out, there is no accompanying guidance on what kind to buy, how much to use or when to take it. There are a slew of varieties developed to produce different medical effects, he says, and the drug is available at dispensaries in myriad forms including tinctures, edibles, capsules, lotions, suppositories, vaporizer cartridges and plants. Patients also can choose among marijuana products that contain varying degrees of THC — Tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical responsible making users feel high, or CBD — Cannabidiol, a cannabis compound that can help patients with problems such as epilepsy, anxiety and chronic pain without making the user high. While these products are available at 12 dispensaries across the state the information that staff at these centers provide is relatively sparse, he says. “Right now dispensaries have no responsibility to make sure customers are using marijuana safely,” according to Parzybok. “The people working there might have some information, but they also are limited about what they can say because cannabis has not been approved by the FDA.” Leigh Dunlap, 55, of Florence, who uses marijuana to ease her symptoms from fibromyalgia, has struggled with that lack of information. Her illness affects her muscles and soft tissue causing widespread chronic pain, fatigue and sleep problems. “It’s true, we are all left to figure this out on our own by going online and researching websites that purport to have information,” she said in a recent interview. “Trying to find out what works best for you is a nightmare because it takes a lot of trial and error, time and money.” Dunlap says she is still looking for the right strain and dose to manage her symptoms. “I don’t want to get high, I’m a mom with a lot of things to do, I just don’t want to be in pain.” Ezra Parzybok displays his CBD products at his home office in Northampton. Ezra Parzybok displays his CBD products at his home office in Northampton. Accidental discovery That is where Parzybok, through his consultations with individuals and organizations and his writing on the topic, is hoping to help. It was his interest in marijuana as a medicinal herb to ease his own anxiety that prompted him to educate himself by poring over available research published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, he says. A random experience with some marijuana that was offered to him by a neighbor is what opened his eyes to its benefits. “It was instantaneous stress relief, and that was what inspired me to eventually grow my own,” he said. “Plus, I was just fascinated by the research and what was actually happening scientifically.” While his background is in the arts, and he has no formal education in medicine or science, Parzybok says his passion for the analytical comes from his experience as an artist. He was trained, he says, to approach a piece of artwork with a non-judgmental and inquisitive eye in order to understand the artist and the work without cultural bias. He has taken the same approach to marijuana, he says. He believes the fact that he was never a recreational user also gives him a purer focus on its medicinal merits. So, in 2012 when Massachusetts voters backed a measure allowing medical marijuana to be sold in the state, he got his medical marijuana card and set out on a new career path which included testing his own medicines made from strains of marijuana that he grew at his home. “I have spent a lot of time formulating remedies, learning what works, what is safe and what is unsafe,” he said. As a certified consultant Parzybok is not allowed to give medical advice or make recommendations to his clients, but he can explain the science and effects of marijuana on the body, he says. He focuses on relieving clients’ symptoms and reducing their use of powerful painkillers that have harmful side effects. Off-putting atmosphere Parzybok says he has found that a large number of people who seek him out are women over 50 who have turned to medical marijuana after having explored numerous other treatment options and medications for their ailments. He attributes that to complex medical conditions such as hormonal issues, joint pain, and cancer-related symptoms as well as their discomfort in visiting a medical marijuana dispensary. “Some have been to a marijuana dispensary and haven’t felt the guidance is sufficient,” he said. Plus the atmosphere and lack of privacy may be off-putting, he says. According to Parzybok, national statistics show that most of the people using medical marijuana dispensaries are 20- to 30-year-old males. And, he points out, a visit to a dispensary for those unfamiliar with marijuana can be somewhat of a shock when the medication comes with names like “Hurricane,” “Trainwreck” and “Tangerine Haze.” At his office, he says, he offers a gentler approach. “Unlike a dispensary, they can come to my office sit down in private and I will listen empathetically, learn about their ailment, and try to provide the safest and most effective information that I possibly can.” In addition to patients, Parzybok says, he sees caregivers for family members with medical conditions and parents who have questions or concerns about their children’s marijuana use. While he is an advocate of medical marijuana, Parzybok believes that the widespread use of recreational marijuana can create problems. Marijuana does not cause a physical addiction like powerful drugs, such as opioids do, he says. However, it can cause an emotional dependency to the euphoria and the ritual of obtaining it in those who use it simply for the purpose of frequently getting high, he says. “People can get into a medicated loop where they smoke marijuana and their anxiety goes away, but the next day it comes back stronger so they smoke even more,” he said. Parzybok says that marijuana also can have a paradoxical effect on the user causing, rather than relieving, anxiety, though those incidents are not psychotic, as some opposed to marijuana claim, and not long-lasting, he says. “If people have been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, yes, cannabis can exacerbate that, but it can also help as well, depending on how its used,” he said. A change in practice Parzybok’s practice has changed in recent years from working with marijuana containing the mind-altering THC to the strain that has just CBD – the cannabis compound that relieves various ailments without the euphoria. The shift came after his arrest in 2015 for growing and selling the substance. Parzybok’s home was raided after a National Guard helicopter spotted cannabis plants growing in his yard and he was summoned to court. Though medical marijuana had been legal since 2012, he says, there were no dispensaries open until the fall of 2015, which left patients permitted to use it with no legitimate place to buy it. While marijuana containing THC was and still is illegal for an individual to sell, Parzybok had begun giving it to those who asked for his help, and eventually he started accepting donations. “I knew that I was pushing the envelope,” he said. After he provided numerous letters of support to the court, the judge was convinced that he was dedicated to providing a safe way for patients to receive medical marijuana for legitimate ailments. He was given 90 days of probation. The incident, he says, had a major effect on his life. “It was a dark time for me. I really believed in helping people, but I didn’t want to break the law and I didn’t want to put my family in jeopardy.” He stopped his business for about six months, he says, and spent a lot of time looking for other jobs. People continued to seek his help, however, and friends finally convinced him that there was a need for his services, he says. He decided to learn more about CBD and build his business around that.  “I am happy that I stuck with it and believe even more so that medical marijuana is appropriate and can really help,” he says. “I can’t sell THC and I don’t grow anything here anymore.” But he still creates and sells medical-grade remedies. His whole plant CBD infusions are designed to reduce symptoms caused by fibromyalgia, insomnia, IBS, ADHD, hormonal issues, inflammation and toning the nervous and immune systems without side effects. Sold under the name Highend Health, these products can be seen on his website at ezrahelps.com.

Diverse Voices in The Disciplines
Part 2: Justin Phan Challenges the Academic Status Quo through Alternative Ethnic and Gender Rhetoric
Tumblr media
(Photo source: UC Riverside Ethnic Studies Department)
Justin Phan exudes a grounded seriousness that draws a teacher in whether they are in front of the class or meeting with him one on one.  The attention in Justin’s eyes never wavers, even when talking about topics most students perceive as boring. When teaching, I always felt certain Justin was working to absorb as much of the information that was being co-created during the learning process in each moment during class.  That said, I deeply respected Justin because he is not the type of student to take the information that is presented at face value. Justin always critically analyzes the rhetoric around whatever is being discussed so he can have the ability to critically respond to the mindsets and concepts that underlie that rhetoric with his own ideas. Justin’s willingness to articulate his findings on the eurocentric rhetoric that surrounds diverse peoples, gender, and the concept of race gives Justin a number of opportunities to practice translating his culturally based ideas into academic rhetoric through codeswitching in safe spaces.
As the son of Vietnamese immigrants, Justin seeks to understand how the confluence of militarism and post-colonialism impact gender, race and nationalism in the Vietnamese diaspora.    In terms of the current composition literature on students of immigrant descent, Justin Phan would be labeled an Asian ESL student, despite the fact that Justin has an extraordinarily high English competency in everyday conversation and in his writing. However, when Justin began college as a biological sciences major he did not feel confident as a writer. For Justin, writing seemed to focus on grammatical rules and formulaic approaches to composing a message. Justin claimed he would spend hours working on the mechanics of a page trying to get it “just right” while missing the opportunity to focus on honing his message. Justin admitted:
“I felt like I wasn’t good at writing. I felt like for me for a while I didn’t really, like, do any reading or writing. It was something I was kind of worried about, and I was kind of taught it as a formula, usually with the five paragraph thing and try to do your topic sentences and stuff. And so I tried to write that for a while. I always saw writing as just like plugging in and following that formula that they taught us, not really thinking about what kind of lessons or what kind of message I'm trying to convey. So I think really early on, maybe that’s just the way that writing was taught at high school.”
Justin also had trouble with striking a balance between being conversational or being formal in his work because of his perceptions of the constraints of academic writing. Justin perceived the genre to be more clinical and emotionally detached, so he had more difficulty with academic writing.  Much like the other students featured in this research, Justin’s identity informs the topics of his papers. Despite that fact, Justin definitely felt a split between his academic and personal voice.
So now I’m having trouble, well how do I know if it’s like academic enough and how do I know if it’s too personal?...
I think it’s still all part of me, because I feel like, I believe that people function differently in different circumstances. And so when I need to write for an anthro paper, I might take on more of this objective voice, while also trying to intervene... while at the same time I’m writing for one of my feminist study classes, those things are, in a sense, given, the idea that subjectivity shapes how you talk about things. So I feel a little more at ease reflecting on personal experience[in a feminist class], than I would have said about a sociology class, where a professor might say, like, anecdotal evidence is not evidence.
In this quote we can see when Justin determines a particular discipline does not value the same evidence he does, in this case valuing storytelling as evidence, the split between his academic and scholarly voice occurs.  While Justin admits he understands people communicate differently in different circumstances, he also still has issues switching between the rhetorical stances of each discipline.
Justin went on to describe how all that changed. When Justin got to college two things happened to him concurrently.  First, Justin gained awareness of the academic dialoguing process that occurs perpetually across theories, theorists, and texts through his first university classes.
“...over the years I started seeing reading and writing as more of like a dialoguing process. So I started imagining the books as people that I’m just talking to, or like they’re talking to me, and eventually I started thinking about, like, citations as like, well, if you’re in this room with all these people, you are just trying to make a point and have this person, well this x person said this and let them speak for a while, and, well, ‘this’ is what I'm trying to get at by having them speak. So it seemed, eventually I think I saw writing as more of a performative process, where it was kind of like there’s a production side to it, where you’re producing a piece of work to convey a particular message, and it’s also how you are trying to frame it as you’re going along with different points and putting yourself in dialogue.”
In understanding the dialoguing process, Justin realized the way to interject himself into that dialogue was through writing.  While this seems like a no-brainer for most of us academics, the fact that Justin came to this realization independently is huge given the fact that most diverse students see the ideas and approaches that are a part of the academy as set in stone with no entry point for new, alternative ideas.
The second thing that happened to Justin was during his first years at UC Davis was much more personal. Justin completed what he describes as a “racialization process,” meaning he was designated “Asian” by the school which is problematic because that term was developed through a Eurocentric paradigm and doesn’t reflect the uniqueness of each cultural group that originated from the continent of Asia. Being lumped in this way led Justin to question and talk back to the stereotypes that were foisted upon him and others who would be designated “Asian” by white monoculture. Justin reported:
“prior to coming to Davis, I didn’t really closely identify as being an American... You know I came into the world with my family, right? They didn’t call themselves Asian Americans; they called themselves Vietnamese, because we’re Vietnamese immigrants—folks from Vietnam, but here in the US. So there’s a family culture that was there, and there were ways that school tries to categorize me in particular way based on the historical legacy of racism. So you know that I’d be, I think part of the reason I was in honors classes was because I was a quiet Asian student who did homework. You know, like, I think that’s part of it...the ways that I interacted with being Asian American was different I think, before coming to Davis.”
The racialization process Justin began to undergo in high school reached a critical point when he started attending Davis. Justin argues the academic institution racialized him and other diverse students by lumping them into groups according to monoculture based “assumptions of positionality.” Assumptions of positionality presumes an individual has insider knowledge of a particular group or represents a particular group because they identify with that group or have characteristics of that group. The assumption of group representation may occur despite the fact that the individual may not identify themselves in the same way, or there may be a body of group foundational knowledge that individual may not have access to.
Justin went on to describe the different types of Asian students that get lumped into identities that are pre-constructed by monoculture based rhetoric based on assumptions of positionality:
“There’s international students, students who face things differently, folks that are breaking down model minority stuff, and saying that not all Asians are wealthy, hardworking, super good at math and science. And I think that coming from the Bay area, I was able to play into that [stereotype] in many different ways...”
What made different Justin’s college racialization experience different from his high school experience of being racialized were the student-run community centers on the UC Davis campus. Becoming involved with UC Davis’ student activist community raised Justin’s awareness about talking back to and resisting the legacies of racist monoculture.  That resistance includes rejecting the model minority stereotype that has been projected onto Asians by whites because that stereotype was created to denigrate other ethnic groups.
When describing being described as “Asian” by an institution  and responding to institutions through activists networks, Justin says:
“it’s a new racialization process coming to Davis, and being part of networks that would try to challenge those logics institutionally, that try to categorize that all Asian folks are similar, or saying that ‘This is what Asians are like,’ based on the funding grants, or stuff like that. I know that people are working on a grant right now, so if you are at school [that is] twenty-five percent Asian serving, then you can apply for this grant. So like I think for me, it was coming here and seeing activists being like, ‘Wait we’re not all Asian in this particular way that you’re trying to construct us.’”
The type of critical response to academic schemas and systems diverse, radical scholars construct as Justin describes here brings to light the amount, or lack thereof, of nuance researchers and administrators bring to the table when describing and working to serve diverse students. Justin questions the assumptions embedded in these types of identities because they have been pre-constructed by a racist system. Superimposing assumptions of positionality on groups of people can lead to faulty decision making based on limited data and activist acts in response to, or in accordance with, the negative outcomes of those decisions, whether they be administrative or pedagogical outcomes.
Coming to Davis, there is system networks of student centers, academic departments that really try to politicize these Asian ideas of race and try to really kind of combat racism or combat other forms of oppression on campus. And so being part of those networks of people, who consider themselves radicals or anti-oppression activists like stuff like that, really shifted and made me think about the world completely differently, cause ‘politics,’ ‘radicals,’ and ‘Asian-American’ I would never use in a sentence prior to coming to Davis.”
Justin learned to talk back to and reach beyond the limitations of monoculturally constructed identities when he joined student groups that presented alternative pedagogies that integrated ethnocentric and gender-based ways to construct knowledge. The alternative pedagogies of the student groups introduced Justin to active facilitation between diverse groups of people and differing theoretical frameworks. Justin ended up combining his awareness of the ongoing academic conversation with the theories and approaches he learned in activist spaces. Justin then transferred the practices of facilitation from those activist spaces to his reading and analysis of texts when he became a humanities major.
Justin went on to describe how he came to see writing as a “performative process” that put himself “in dialogue” with the authors he read, which is a critical, well-documented skill advanced writers possess.  Justin also came to see the differences between facilitating dialogues among real people and acting out imaginary dialogues between authors and their theories.
“I started seeing facilitation as an important part to writing, so if you were to, it’s kind of like facilitating a conversation of different theoretical frameworks or different people who have different opinions, and trying to get at some kind of consensus with it. Rventually I started realizing that consensus isn’t necessarily what I’m trying to do...”
Justin’s reading practices revealed to him that the theories and ideas he works with do not have to concur with one another, leading him to get comfortable with ideological conflict and ambiguity. When ideas talk back to one another to create ideological conflict, that conflict opens up space for new ideas to challenge old concepts and bring more nuanced approaches to an issue.
In Loco Parentis: Parenting Other People’s Adult Children
One of the main on-campus issues Justin wanted to talk back to was what Justin described as a parental tone and approach the university takes to its students. Justin calls UC Davis’ approach to managing its students “In Loco Parentis”, or the institution acting as a stand in for the student’s parents and family.  To support his claim, Justin examined the rhetoric in a number of UC Davis publications using anthropological approaches.   One of the textual data sources Justin used to demonstrate the patronizing parental voice the school uses to speak with students was, coincidentally and ironically, Aggie Voices.  I did not discover that fact until I read Justin’s first completed draft, so I did not influence his analysis of the blog in any way.
Justin’s results demonstrated UC Davis’ publications frequently evoked the image of family by referring to the campus community as a family in multiple publications.  After constructing the university’s familial ideal,  the institution worked within that family framework to hand down rules and discipline, much like a parent would, to students.  Justin argued UC Davis’ approach to communicating with students and the community at large negated the students’ autonomy and rights as unique individuals with their own families and cultures.  Moreover, in invoking a parental stance the university refused to see students as adults who are, more often than not, paying for their own education in one way or another.    Positioning the students as adults would confer more power to students since they would be seen as they are - consumers paying large sums of money for the university’s product, not children who need discipline and management.
Justin found the conversations we had where we triangulated ideas and delved into the political in a private safe space was most helpful for his papers.  I never interjected my own personal politics but I did present different sides from different theoretical approaches (I used ideas from linguistics, sociology, discourse analysis, feminist theory and decolonizing pedagogy) and in regards to each on-campus political issue to help Justin sort out his ideas. However, I was the second person Justin sound boarded his ideas with. First, Justin engaged in these and other topics with his mentor, Professor Mama. Professor Mama, who Justin described as having extensive experience with activism, encouraged Justin in his quest to merge his activism-informed ideas with his academic analysis.  Professor Mama encouraged Justin to complete his research using a research journal so he could chart the development of his thoughts and findings.  In both his conversations with Professor Mama and myself, Justin got to practice code-switching between the language of the academy and the world of activism effectively while analyzing complicated, political topics related to diverse people in the academy.
Engaging thorny topics, like criticizing the rhetoric of the institution where one works or studies,  a tricky strategy because talking about politics or other complicated ideas can be explosive for an instructor’s career. That said, these conversations have to happen so students can see how a more seasoned academic code-switches between the languages of different spaces, so they can see how an academic positions their ideas and so students have the opportunity to practice code-switching and positioning in a safe space. Conversations like these have to be done in such a way that the educator doesn’t come off as partial to any particular idea or cause. The conversation also has to be initiated by the student and co-navigated by the student and educator.  The initiation of a political conversation by the student indicates the student feels the educator is trustworthy enough to approach about with the topic in addition to being knowledgeable about it. It might seem counterintuitive to wait for students to initiate a difficult conversation, especially if the professor has already intuited discussing that topic with the student was already on the horizon.  Professors hold high levels of power over students, whether we like to admit it or not. If a professor initiates a difficult conversation, that initiation could lead to the student feeling manipulated or led in their academic pursuits.
Again we see how trust between the educator and the student, particularly when it comes to the student trusting the educator with their deepest ideas, impacts how the student crafts their message.  It is important to remember the student is being initiated into a discipline by the instructor, so the instructor is the “face” of the discipline, so to speak. Student encounters with the faces of a discipline will determine how the student characterizes the discipline itself and whether the student believes their ideas will be engaged, validated or even accepted by a discipline.  Justin’s example provides a sharp contrast to Elizabeth’s example.  Justin’s non-academic rhetoric was welcomed and engaged by his mentor, so he felt he had a point of entry into his discipline.  In contrast, Elizabeth’s mentor rebuffed her language and ideas, so Elizabeth did not feel welcomed into her discipline, despite the fact that other individuals in the discipline would be interested in her ideas. In these students’ examples, we can see how much power we educators have as individuals when it comes to ushering in more diverse students into our disciplines.  The fact of the matter is we have a lot of power on the individual level, more power than we typically give ourselves credit for. Seemingly monolithic disciplines are made up of individuals, namely us scholars.  When we criticize our disciplines for not being more diverse, we’re criticizing ourselves.  We have to take into consideration the fact that our disciplines may not be more diverse because we as individuals have not welcomed diverse ideas and peoples.  Perhaps we have inadvertently upheld the status quo by teaching and doing things the way they have always been done because it is safe or because it is all we know. Justin’s relationship with Professor Mama demonstrates disciplines grow and evolve when the participants of that discipline are willing to grow and evolve.  Professor Mama saw Justin had something to teach, something she and her discipline.  In inviting a student to become a teacher, Professor Mama fueled Justin’s passion for research while opening space for the discipline of Anthropology to evolve.
