20 questions for fic writers
Not going to lie - no one tagged me in this lol - but I am doing it .
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
47.
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
322,829.
Crazy number for me. I know some have literal millions but I can’t believe I’ve written that much in like the last two or three years??
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently Star Trek (TNG/VOY/PIC & some DS9). ER and Criminal Minds more so in the past. But ER I’ll never leave you.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Aster
- my labor of love - no pun intended.
- i WILL finish her (manifest it pls).
A Flame In Your Heart
- going to be honest writing post s3 isn’t something that interests me the most.
- however, this is a cute story and i wish i had some more ideas for it as i feel like i lack direction.
I Should Have Moved Moons For You
- ahhh.
- a fic I really should have pre-written before posting but i do have fun with it.
- i am half confident she will be finished in time but it stresses me out thinking about it and my outline lol.
- but like most of my WIPs the chapters are all outlined and i do have semi-concrete endings for them or at least know the main plot.
A Lot Of Things Can Happen In Two Months
- like the concept but i think i could have written it better ?
- feels a bit messy but also there are a lot of feelings in it.
- but happy i got it finished !! and i am proud of it overall.
Eighteen Minutes
- ngl I forgot I wrote this lol.
- the only one-shot here.
- def benefited kudos wise from being posted after the second episode aired.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! And I love to give comments regardless if I get a reply from the author. But personally, I like to reply back as the commenter has taken their time to do this. And you can have some really lovely and funny interactions in the comments haha … I just love talking about fic.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Well…it would have to be either of the ones I killed Beverly in - Last contact or Too Late.
Not sure which is more angstiest?
However, as for a multichap ending that ends the most angstiest and wasn’t written to be a character-death-fic - maybe - A Lot Of Things Can Happen In Two Months. Which sucks cause it’s pretty much canon compliant LOL.
Hmm now I am tempted to write another multichap with a less than happy ending…
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my fics that have an ‘ending’ are WIPS that I haven’t finished yet lol.
But maybe Our Turn - it’s just Beverly and Jean-Luc enjoying everything wonderful in their lives <3
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not really - I doubt anyone cares enough lol. But I am ‘fortunate’ that some of the more ‘controversial’ ships I may write have had writers come before me and take the brunt of any crap :(( but they’ve created a lovely sandbox for the rest of us to play in <3
9. Do you write smut?
Not often but I have yeah…and *deep breaths* … I have no idea if I am even acceptable at it LOL. It’s definitely something I sometimes want to add to my fics and lately I’ve been giving in a little.
Okay, someone tell me if I am terrible and I will stop.
10. Do you write crossovers?
It’s not my go to thing but yes I have. Including the fusion ER/TNG fic that three people have probably read (but three people I love).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No but that would be cool as!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! With my lovely and supportive ER fic buddies ❤️
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Not sure how best to answer this. It is very dependant on my current hyperfixation and I am one of those sapphics that very much is into the woman more than the man in terms of interest in f/m ships…
However, at the moment it’s Beverly/Jean-Luc and I can say I am definitely more invested and interested in Jean-Luc’s character than I have been with other men in f/m ships. So that’s another reason.
But I love to read/write Crusher/Janeway ❤️ and LOVE those characters. Kerry/Sandy too is special to me.
Can honestly say apart from helping me give Emily Prentiss a baby in my fics I never cared that much for any of her ships I wrote (sorry 😭).
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but probably won't?
Probably better I don’t answer this. It stresses me out cause I want them all to be done 😭
I’ll answer with a WIP I never posted which was a dystopian AU with Kerry and Sandy. Field medicine, babies (it’s me so ofc) and friends trying to survive together.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Hmm - I think I can come up with some good ideas. I can be good at description and introspection … probably more than dialogue.
And I am very strong in the art of giving Beverly Crusher lots of babies. And also making her go through angsty stuff. But I make up for that with the babies I think.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Long intricate plots ? I would love to be better as balancing many themes and plot points in one story. I struggle with dialogue sometimes as well.
Also I am very word count preoccupied at times which is a hindrance as a writer. I sometimes really struggle to get anything out in a session then can overcompensate later by writing too much? But honestly either way I just let myself go with the flow these days otherwise I stress about it.
Yeah and I probably need to edit better.
And smut.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Is this controversial?? I don’t have any issue with it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
(redacted)
20. Favourite fic you've written?
These are both not what I would consider my best work (idk what that even is) but probably Gone (Ice)fishing or It Takes A Village.
Both were written as gifts and out of my comfort zone (for different reasons) but I am really proud of them both.
But I also love some of my Kerry/Sandy one-shots I did here on this blog. And Aster is definitely a personal accomplishment in terms of length as a writer. I love it too ❤️.
Oh, also - To Build A Home - cause it’s tragic & angsty but also BABY🥹 - it’s just my brand.

Okay -I’ll shut up now.
Anyone feel free to do this and tag me.

This is also just a note, but a bit later on I’m probably going to update my stuff over at AO3 and add in some extra things to the authors’ notes.

Behind the Scenes of Fic Writing: 30 Questions for Authors
This is such a cool tag! Thanks @breaniebree
What was the first fandom and/or pairing that you wrote fic for?
Hinny, all the way! It wasn’t good, but it was Hinny.
Do you participate in any writing events or challenges throughout the year? If so, what do you like about them?
I tend to participate in them semi-often on SIYE. I find them a good way to get some creative juices flowing with a topic or subject I wouldn’t have thought about on my own.
Do you write fics from start or finish, or jump around?
I go chapter by chapter. I would confuse myself too much if I started writing chapter 5 but then headed over to chapter 12. Also, I kinda don’t plan everything that far ahead. Which I’ll explain more in the next question lol
Do you outline before you start writing? If so, how far do you stray from that outline?
I do a quick overall base of what I want to do, who the enemies are, important moments I really want to happen, but I never do a full outline. A lot of the time I will have something planned for 5 chapters in the future, but no idea how to get there. I let inspiration strike me and go from there.
What is the perfect environment for you to write in?
A hot cup of tea, music playing softly in the background, and an empty house. It’s perfect when everything is quiet except for my music and my mechanical keyboard.
If you’re really concentrating, how many words can you write in a day?
Hmmm. I’ve never tested myself but I think the most I’ve ever done is 10,000 in one day. I wrote two chapters of “Only the Best” in one day and I aimed to make every chapter in that story at least 5,000 words. So I’d guess around 10,000.
Which part of writing do you struggle with most?
Editing. I hate re-reading my work only looking for flaws. If I were to re-read my work I’d want it to be for enjoyment and nostalgia, but alas in order to find enjoyment in the writing it needs to be edited well lol.
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, share a song that’s been inspiring you lately.
There is this live version of Can’t Go on Without You by KALEO that I love. Actually I’m listening to it right now. I listen to it at least once when I’m writing.
Do you prefer to write AUs, canon divergence, or canon-compliant fic?
AU”s all the way! I love taking a different world than the original and trying to fit everything into this different situation. I love Muggle AU’s the best for some reason.
Do you enjoy writing dialogue, exposition, or plot the most?
Dialogue is so much fun. Trying to come up with a witty comeback or heartwrenching final line is so intense and interesting.
If you could only write angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your life, which would it be?
I love me some fluff. Like sometimes I go out with every intention on making things angst, and then they turn int fluff lol.
Is there a trope you haven’t written yet but really want to?
I don’t think I’ve done a “forced to share a bed” fic and that could be fun
Is there a trope you wouldn’t write if it was the last trope on earth?
Does slow burn count as a trope? I just can’t handle waiting so long for my ship together lol
If you were stuck on a desert island with only two characters, which would you pick?
Ginny Weasley and Hermione. Hermione because she could get us off the island somehow, and Ginny because she and I would have a great time cracking jokes while we helped Hermione.
A Hollywood producer tells you that they want to film just one of your fics. Which fic would you want it to be?
Hmmm. I think I would dig a film of Doom Days or Covert Love. Both have everything needed for a movie. Action, romance, and twists you don’t see coming lol.
What is your most underrated fic?
I wouldn’t say I have any underrated fics because they always are so much better received than I ever intend… that being said, I would love if more people read Doom Days
What fic are you most proud of?
This goes back to the last question. I spent so long planning and plotting Doom Days and I am extremely happy with the way it’s come out.
What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.
Well because I don’t want to give to much away I’ll show off this once part.
His lips curled with forced levity.
I love the word levity and I really wanted to use it and then I thought about how when I’m making a bad joke in a bad moment I always smile to make people understand how I truly feel. Such a simple sentence brought me so much pride.
Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why?
I find that I struggle with Hermione. She’s so much more… straight edge than I tend to focus on, so I have a hard time adding her into stories because I’m afraid I won’t do her justice.
What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written?
Right now it’s Prue from Covert Love. She is my own created character and I’ve had so much fun crafting this backstory that revolves around.... Things I wouldn’t talk about here ;)
What is the one fic that got away?
It hasn’t gotten away yet! I can still write it…. But when I was on a volcano in Spain I saw an adorable meet-cute and I really wanna make it a Hinny meet-cute. I just need to dedicate time… which I never seem to have lol
Have you cried while writing a fic?
Ummm…. I don’t think there have ever been tears but I was hit hard while writing the argument between Harry and Ginny in Covert Love.
If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it?
Hmmm. I think I would have to say Only the Best because I would have liked to add more hints towards who was the culprit. I don’t think I put out enough clues so the reader could have had a chance to figure it out on their own.
How did you come up with title for Covert Love?
I knew I was going to be focusing a lot on the undercover element in this story but the love aspect was also going to be huge so I looked up words that meant undercover and really liked Covert. And it’s also a play on words because Harry and Ginny need to keep their love covert from everyone so Harry doesn’t get in trouble ;)
Which idea came to you first in Covert Love?
It was literally just the general idea of Harry being undercover and falling in love with Ginny. The idea to have her be under his protection started to form as I explored ways for them to meet. And when I decided to have him be unable to tell her about his job… I knew I had something I would love creating and working on. I knew I would have drama and so many intense moments I would be so proud of the story, which is always my goal.
Which part of Covert Love was the hardest to write?
The moment where Harry and Ginny fight because he didn’t tell her about his job. I knew the discovery scene was going to be vital and it always hurts to write Ginny and Harry fighting. So it felt like a lot of pressure and I think overall it came out really well!
If you were ever to do a sequel to Covert Love, what do you think might happen in it?
Hmmm… well I don’t have any plans on doing a sequel at this time, but that’s because I haven’t finished writing the first one yet :P
In Covert Love, what is a happy, post-fic headcanon you have about Hinny?
Harry and Ginny getting to stay together when everything is said and done… maybe a kid or two that love quidditch as much as their mom
A word that describes my WIP
Strive. Everyone is striving for something, even the bad guy. It all comes back to the person and their goals and how much effort they are willing to put into getting what they want/need.
Tell us an idea for a long fic you want to write in the future.
Well… I haven’t started it at all and the research will take a while, but I wanna do a Muggle AU treasure hunter fic. Harry is a treasure hunter who is out searching for a famous lost treasure. While out on an adventure, he runs into a wild red head who is somehow roped into helping Harry. They hate each other at first but fall in love with each other as the adventure goes on. Also, there is another hunter out for the glory of finding this treasure and they have to deal with that crazy bloke and his men. If you’ve played the Uncharted games you’ve seen the format and I’d love to do something with it! Let me know what you guys think!

All of them :D (if you only wanna do some of them, that's fine too :p)
You know me, I'm always happy to answer them all~~ thank you for the ask 😘
A. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
The very first time I ever wrote anything (that was far before the internet and before I even knew that fanfics were), was for the Famous Five. My first fic when I knew about fanfics was for Avatar the Last Airbender.
B. What fandoms have you written for?
The Famous Five, Avatar the Last Airbender, the Vampire Diaries, Yugioh [none of these were ever uploaded anywhere lol], MCU, One Piece and the Gazette.
C. Who is your favorite character to write?
I'm honestly not sure I have one lol. I'd say any character from my three otps~
D. Do you prefer gen or romance?
Romance.
E. Have you ever written a crossover?
Nope. I have once imagined a Yugioh and One Piece crossover though lol idek why.
F. How long have you been writing fanfic?
Geez..... since High School so around hm.... 12 to 15 years?
G. Do you prefer writing one-shots or chaptered fics?
I love writing chaptered fics so much lol I just rarely ever manage to finish them 😑
H. What is the longest fic you’ve written?
Lukewarm Rain (I think), 41 chapters and around 230k words.
I. Do you have any particular inspirations when you write fanfic?
Mostly just my otps or favorite characters.
J. What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Lukewarm Rain, I'm so damn proud of this fic I can‘t even put it into words.
K. Do you post WIPs or wait to post until the entire fic is written?
I used to post chapter by chapter but now I first write the whole fic before I post the story. It works better that way for me. One or two friends do get to read my drafts though, to point out inconsistencies etc.
L. What is your favorite fic idea that you don’t think you’ll ever write?
I mean I do want to write all my fic ideas eventually, so... but if I had to pick one, probably the Aoiki Shinigami AU. It's gonna be challenging af so we'll see how that goes...
M. How do you come up with titles?
Oh boi 💀 I hate titles so much lmao I still don't have one for my Parenting AU and I'm 12 chapters in. I usually take inspiration from songs lol or use song titles tbh XD sometimes I manage to think of some aesthetically pleasing titles that somehow hint at the plot but rarely so.
N. How do you come up with summaries?
The second thing I hate the most about writing XD idk either I can think of something semi good or I'll just use some extract from a chapter and hope people will find it interesting enough to read the fic lol.
O. Is there any fandom you’ve been into that you haven’t written fic for? Why not?
Bungou Stray Dogs... I really want to write fics for it but I haven't come up with a good enough idea yet.
P. What are your favorite tropes to write?
I have so many hmm.... my favorite gotta be two idiots in love who don't know they are/are in denial or don't think the other reciprocates their feelings. Somehow that's far easier to write for me than people actually openly dating lol.
Q. If you could pick one fic of yours to rewrite, which would it be?
I mean most of my One Piece fics need rewriting lol. But I deleted most of them from the web anyway. I was considering rewriting some Law x Reader fics into Law x Luffy though~ also What Happens in Vegas needs a serious reworking lol it's so bad in some parts.
R. Would you ever write a sequel to any of your fics? Which one(s)?
I've been considering writing a one shot for Lukewarm Rain, yes. Other than that, no. I'm not really into sequels tbh.
S. What is your favorite pairing to write?
Aoiki.... I wanna write Lawlu and Soukoku too though but I haven't yet (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`) also some other ships like Uruki, Reituha etc [also please note I use these ship names solely to indicate the two parts of the ships, not to say who "tops and who's bottom" since apparently everyone uses ship names that way lol. I just go for the most common ship name, that's all. I can‘t stand the top/bottom bs.]
T: Would you or have you ever written an unhappy ending?
I have yes XD a drabble in which Ace dies and a oneshot in which Law kills the reader LOL. But I would never writte unhappy endings for my otps. I hate sad endings.
U. Do you prefer AUs or canon compliant fics?
Depends on the fandom. Gazette definitely AUs, they're so fun to explore. One Piece and Bungou Stray Dogs I love canon compliant fics, there's so much to work with~
V. Do you prefer writing established relationships or first times?
First times! In one shots, established ones are cool too, but for longer fics I absolutely prefer first times~ I'm struggling a lot with open first time dating in my Parenting AU lol somehow it's so difficult for me to not include angst into the mix lol.
W. Have you ever written anything that you are embarrassed by today?
Yes. Lots of Mary Sues in One Piece fics. Thank god no one ever got to see those fics lmfao.
X. What fandom have you written the most fics for?
One Piece and Gazette
Y. What is your favorite genre to write? (angst, fluff, pwp, etc.)
Definitely angst XD combined with some fluff and smut ofc XD
Z. Post an expert from either your first fic or your most recent one.
This is from my Parenting AU haha

Author Spotlight: @shmazarov/ lazarov
Every week we interview a writer from The Magicians fandom. If you would like to be interviewed or you want to nominate a writer, get in touch via our ask box.
First things first, tell us a little about yourself.
I'm in my late 20s, Canadian. I've spent more of my life writing fic than not, and tend to flit around from fandom to fandom.
How long have you been writing for?
The oldest fic on my semi-defunct ff.net account dates back to 2006 - so at least 13 years, although I posted plenty of misguided LiveJournal fanfiction long before that.
What inspired you to start writing for The Magicians?
I was originally a book fan, although when the books were coming out there wasn't much of an online fandom. Truth be told, it took me a long time to warm up to the show - but once I did, I found that the TV versions of the characters inspired a lot of fic ideas.
Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write? What it is about them that makes them your favourite?
Quentin! Always. I really enjoy the way his jumbled, speedy thought patterns and self-consciousness translate into the way he speaks, and I think it's fascinating to explore the ways in which he subverts the White Male Hero trope by never quite managing to be the hero in his (or anyone's) story. Quentin Coldwater is deeply misunderstood and I would fight a bear for him.
Do you have a preference for a particular season/point in time to write about?
Not really, except for being fond of the Mosaic timeline (because I am human). Otherwise, I usually write as if canon is an inconvenience.
Are you working on anything right now? Care to give us an idea about it?
For the Magicians fandom, I am slowly picking away at a multi-part Queliot angst fic that is dear to my heart as well as something new, current-season oriented and (surprisingly) canon-compliant. Who knew I had it in me? For other fandoms, I am perpetually working on a Daredevil fic that is well over 60,000 words and has been ongoing since 2015. It is my white whale. I also, naturally, have not even gotten around to watching the newest season of Daredevil in keeping with my tradition of treating canon as more of a suggestion than an imperative.
How long is your “to do list”?
Not that long! My to do list is limited strictly to the stuff I'm actively working on right now. I have dozens of little prompts-to-self saved in my Google Docs drive, but I tend to write them and tuck them away, forgetting them until I can rediscover them with fresh eyes. I never think of them as "to dos" so much as "maybe somedays."
What is your favourite fic that you’ve written for The Magicians? Why?
I love Other People very much.
Many writers have a fic that they are passionate about that doesn’t get the reception from the fandom that they hoped for. Do you have a fic you would like more people to read and appreciate?
It never surprises me when things I write don't get much traction, because I have a tendency to write niche tropes or stuff that I personally want to read! However - I do think One and the Same is good and affecting and has kind of snuck under the radar. I like that one, and I'm going to keep adding to it (because I like it so much and because, as above, I am a sucker for the Mosaic timeline).
What is your writing process like? Do you have any traditions or superstitions that you like to stick to when you’re writing?
My writing process is GARBAGE! It's garbage. I am needy, and lazy, and terrible at self-motivating. I'm disorganized and hard on myself. I almost never have the help of betas, because I feel a silly but overwhelming sense of guilt asking people for help. With that said, I am always extremely proud of myself for Doing the Damn Thing when I do write.
My personal weird thing is writing on my computer, then always doing my edit read-throughs on my phone. Something about the smaller screen and different font focuses my brain and helps me read my own writing more objectively. I also tend to pick a song, or an album, to listen to on repeat every time I work on a fic or a chapter of. It focuses my scattered brain and helps me write toward a specific mood.
Do you write while the seasons are airing or do you prefer to wait for hiatus? How does the ongoing development of the canon influence and inspire your writing process?
I love writing during seasons because it means people are READING. The spike in feedback that happens during seasons is incredible and so gratifying. Plus, I'm desperate for attention at all times and want those comments and kudos like Mardi Gras beads, obviously. Canon, as always, is optional. Especially in this fandom! Who needs fandom when you have timelines?
What has been the most challenging fic for you to write?
In the Magicians fandom, the most recent chapter of Stories We Tell kicked my ass. I am always trying to improve my visualization and descriptive imagery, and that was a real test for me. I'm not great at it yet, but I'm glad I challenged myself with that one and look forward to doing it even more.
Are there any themes or tropes that you like particularly like to explore in your writing?
So much angst. Sorry guys, it's free therapy? I can get self-conscious about the fact that I barely ever write fluff, but I have a really hard time getting inspired by anything other than misery.
 Somebody's gotta do it.
Are there any writers that inspire your work? Fanfiction or otherwise?
Fanfiction : @greywash, obviously @sashayed and Lady Jaida are like, the pinnacle??? of fic writing, @longnationalnightmare, @afterism, @refusals... there are so many.
What are you currently reading? Fanfiction or otherwise?
I haven't had time to read or keep up with much fic lately, but semi-recent greats include colour all the squares by @afterism and spring sooner than the lark by @greywash!
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve ever been given?
"Your writing is incomprehensible." - a TA who gave me an extremely sub-par mark and made me realize that sometimes people are just going to hate your writing, and that's ok.
"When you write a story, you're telling yourself the story. When you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things that are not the story." - that one is Stephen King, but I would like to pretend it was advice given to me, because I cherish it.
Are there any words or phrases you worry about overusing in your work?
I can't think of any offhand, but I would pay someone to hit me with a rigid stick every time I use a cliche in my writing.
What was the first fanfic that you wrote? Do you still have access to it?
I have vague memories of terrible The 10th Kingdom fanfiction. It doesn't exist anymore, sadly/thankfully - but now I am feeling nostalgic and digging through the old 10th Kingdom Angelfire archive, right this second. Be still my heart.
Rapidfire Round!
Self-edit or Beta?
Self-edit, because I am too shy and full of shame to ask for help. It's not a virtue.
Comments or Kudos/Reblogs or Likes?
COMMENTS. Comments are the thing that bring me more joy than, well, many other things that probably should give me a lot of joy. Comments keep my heart full.
Smut, Fluff or Angst?
As if it's even a competition -- ANGST. Always angst. Angst always.
Quick & Dirty or Slow Burn?
Slow burn. Particularly involving difficult and meandering conversations and shrouded looks.
Favourite Season?
Season One
Favourite Epiosde?
I truly cannot decide.
Favourite Book?
The Magicians Land
Three favourite words?
softly / petrichor / idyllic
