the cool evening breeze reddened your already rosy cheeks, threading yourself through the lively crowd. the smell of fried food filled your lungs, making you pause momentarily and drift over to the stall that was selling the heavenly goods. the sight of the potato twisters made your stomach grumble, so you caved to your cravings and bought yourself one.
your friends were long gone, though you weren't that worried. all of you had agreed on meeting at the pier if — more likely when you got separated. the starchy, fried, spicy potato drizzled with sauces was exactly what you needed to truly relish the festival atmosphere. everything felt… perfect. fairy lights adorned the streetlights, fireflies danced above the crowds, and all you could hear was pure joy. happiness.
at the pier, people were floating lanterns. you didn't spot your friends anywhere, so you decided to join the people, taking a lantern from a sweet old lady. there were a few who were painting on theirs, but you were too excited to wait. you listened to a guy from another group telling his friends how to fly the perfect lantern. your eavesdropping wasn't very fruitful because your lantern had chosen to stay on the ground. you were just about certain the paper would catch fire and burn to ashes when a hand lifted up the lantern alongside you.
you were met with the sweetest brown eyes and a smile that melted your heart, his voice deep and melodious as he was telling you getting it up into the air was difficult in the beginning. you weren't even listening, eyes focused on the freckles that dotted his face, like the stats in the sky right above you. His eyes were like the floating lanterns, brightening up your whole world. eventually, the two of you managed to get your lantern up into the sky.
“wow…” you watched the lantern fly higher and higher.
“that one's mine!” the man beside you pointed to one that was near yours, a sun painted on it. the lanterns bumped into one another as your shoulders brushed his, both of you feeling your cheeks heat up — a stark contrast to the breeze that was picking up. your heart fluttered once you meet his warm gaze again, your smile growing wider when you noticed the stuffed animal keychain that was on a loop of his jeans.
“oh this?” he looked at the fluffy keychain of a cute chicken, “there's a stall where you can win them… actually, i could just win one for you?” with the way his head tilted as he asked that, paired with the smile he was giving you, there was no possible way of saying no. so you nodded, cheeks burning from how much you'd been grinning ever since this mystery man stepped next to you. he lifted a hand up which you bashful took, “my name's felix, by the way.”
