Recently, some official South Park merch was released in claw machines across Japan! Since one of the designated machine locations was relatively near where I live, I made a weekend trip of it and thought it would be fun to share a bit of it with y’all 🥰 This will mostly focus on the info about the plushies but also touch a bit on the place I went to to get them. Read on if you’re interested!
Thanks to a tip from my good pal @allymumu, I learned about two different South Park claw machine merch drops happening in March. First were these plastic cases:
As well as these plushie keychains:
None of the machines carrying the plastic cases were anywhere near me, however one machine with the plushie keychains was! So I decided to head over to AruAru City (a 6 floor mall devoted entirely to anime/manga/games that houses the Kitakyushu Manga Museum) in Kokura to try my hand at winning these guys.
Once there, the claw machine was actually incredibly difficult to locate. I searched around for a while along with my friend who joined me on this trip. Eventually, we had to ask an employee where the machine was.
As you can see, it definitely needed to be pointed out!
Claw machines in Japan aren’t usually stuffed with prizes so when we got to it, there were only 3 of the 4 plushies available to win at a time, with employees restocking whenever the machine ran out.
This was actually perfectly fine for me because I hadn’t been planning on trying to win Towelie. Sorry to all the Towelie stans out there but I don’t care that much for him 😅 Crane games are just as much about luck as they are skill so I didn’t want to waste any more money than necessary. Plus, the claw machine was small and close to the ground, so it was kind of uncomfortable crouching down and playing at it for an extended period of time.
Surprisingly, getting Kenny and Stan was relatively easy! Probably 5-6 tries each.
Which, at ¥100 (~$0.66 USD) a try, is a reasonable amount to spend.
Butters, however… well, he lived up to his name and kept slipping out of the claw every time I got a grip on him. I’d prefer not to specify exactly how much I spent trying to get him but let’s just say it was a lot 😭 My friend was able to win him for herself though so I do have a picture of all the boys!
They’re very soft and well made, perfectly palm sized 🥰 The elastic feels a little short sometimes if you plan on looping the entire plush through it to attach it to something (I did this with my belt loop to carry them around with me) but with some squishing they get through just fine.
Since going on a trip just to win some plushies seems a bit crazy, my friend and I visited some other cool places in Kokura the next day! Of course, the plushies came with us. ケニーちゃんはかわいいプリンセスだから, I of course brought him to Kokura Castle.
Then basically right down the street is the TOTO Museum, a museum dedicated to the company TOTO. However, since TOTO specializes in toilets, this place is more colloquially known as the Toilet Museum. Considering Stan’s last season trauma surrounding Japanese toilets, I thought it would help give him closure or something to learn their history.
All in all, a very fun and rewarding trip! I really hope there’s more claw machine merch drops relatively soon. If there are and I can go, I promise to share the info with y’all just like this! Hope you enjoyed 💕

Wh. What is the lore behind Butters Cookies?
South Park Mania in Japan really hit differently back in 2012, it hit so hard that pixiv fanartists decided that drawing wasn't enough and had to show their love by baking their little blorbos, and putting photos of their cookies at the end of their fanart logs (which is extremely weird as Pixiv is a digital art website, even just photos of traditional art is rare), of course, if you are asking, this eventually spanned "shipping food" for all kind of popular ships like cryde or bunny, or even the more infamous kyman or style cakes, it was a weirdly popular trend that let's be real you don't see nowdays
This is where the Butters Cookies come in, among the artists involved there was one that actually runs a tumblr account as well, @/tamago-boooolo, but the food (and most of their art) was posed on the Pixiv account which is this one, I have seen people never credit them which is a shame because they also did other characters
One thing i find more weird isn't just that person behind these cookies used to be pretty popular and made a very edgy an Hatsune Miku-themed Kenny MV that has currently more than 240.000 views on Youtube, but the artist also posted on their own NicoNico account the process making of Butters Cookies, and that video was kind of popular as well, ranking almost 20.000 views which is not bad for a slide show of food of an american character on a japanese website, SP isn't exactly the most popular topic there!
The artist actually bothered to make a tutorial for these every single one of them with SP music in the background, i really like when Stan's bullying song played and the words "make bullying kill itself" appears on the cute visuals, very Butters-like
That's basically the story, it's just a bunch of trivia about this artist whose... cookies i often see reposted without credits and whose story is quite interesting imo, also the shipping food, you just don't see that creativity anymore... where are the japanese girls and their yaoi cakes.....

South Park Fukuoka Pop-Up
Thanks to a heads up from the ever lovely @/danilazuli, I found out about another South Park pop-up shop opening today! Unlike the last two which were in Tokyo, this one is in Fukuoka. Since that means I don’t have to get on a flight to get there, I went after work today.
First difference from the anniversary one in Tokyo last summer is that this one wasn’t its own store, but instead shared the space with some other pop-up events going on. Specifically, a Capcom pop-up, a Doraemon pop-up, and TMNT pop-up. This meant it was much smaller than the big Tokyo one I went to and didn’t really have any extra themed stuff like the school bus photo op.
As you can see, it was pretty much just the merch. This was still pretty nice because they had a lot of stuff from both the anniversary Tokyo pop-up and the second one I didn't go to! In particular, my friend and I were thrilled to see that they had the non-pixel acrylic standee with all four main boys that completely sold out last summer. Unlike the other ones that sold out, that one was not sold as a part of the secondary distribution in Village Vanguards so this was very exciting. They also had the Creek-themed totes, something only sold at the second pop-up that I didn’t see being resold online afterward.
Other highlights include many character buttons and keychains. They only seemed to have the Stan, Butters, and Towlie acrylic keychains, though they also had Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman as well last summer. I’m not sure if they stopped selling those ones or if they were simply out of them for the day. I’ll check when I go back again. I don’t remember the buttons or the plasticky key pouches being available at last summer’s pop-up, but maybe they were at the other Tokyo pop-up. Or maybe they’re exclusive to the Fukuoka one! I’m not sure.
Speaking of stuff I hadn’t seen before, I don’t think they had these shirts at either of the Tokyo pop-ups before. I really like both of them! The pixel Butters is very cute and simple, but the Let’s Fighting Love one is just so funny and classic. I didn’t get either one today but I’m definitely considering it for when I go back 👀
Even if I didn’t get the shirts, I did get a bunch of other stuff! I have quite a lot of clothes, but as I said, I am very tempted. One of the things the pop-up advertised was a sticker if you spent ¥3000 (~$30). I assumed this was just one sticker if you spent at least that much, but apparently it was one sticker for every ¥3000 you spent. I got 2 of these stickers. They’re blue with the classic lineup and I honestly like it a lot. I do wish they had more more options though, especially because it’s very easy to spend over ¥3000 (all of the shirts are ¥3300).
All in all, I think it was definitely worth the trip over there! Hopefully a lot of people go to it and let Matt and Trey know that there’s fans down in Kyushu.
