                   Katsuie’s face lit up as soon as he saw Lady Oichi’s texts. Thank goodness she had forgiven him after everything he’d confessed to doing ! He wasn’t sure that even Lady Oichi could forgive him for murdering her. But, as fate would have it, Lady Oichi was as merciful and compassionate as a goddess. She must’ve understood that Katsuie hadn’t wanted to do such a terrible thing, right ? Of course she would —– her own brother had forced her to kill many people against her will, after all.

                   If they ever returned home, they could make up some sort of story for Lord Nobunaga. They might have to work on the details to make it sound convincing, but that wouldn’t be too hard. Although…how come Lady Oichi was telling Katsuie not to fight with Lord Azai ? His hatred of the other man wasn’t that obvious, was it ? However, the fact remained that Lady Oichi must’ve noticed some sort of behavior on Katsuie’s part. He’d need to do a better job of hiding his revulsion towards Lord Azai in the future. Katsuie typed a quick reply to Lady Oichi.

1. Is your muse a romantic? Do they dream of love and marriage?

Katsuie’s definitely a romantic ! A lot of the dreams Katsuie still has left revolve around marrying Oichi, doing lovey-dovey couple things with her, and starting a family with her. XD He honestly obsesses over it too much, though —– to the point that he has trouble seeing himself in a relationship with anyone who isn’t Oichi, or in a relationship that doesn’t necessarily involve marriage and starting a family. ^^;

7. Is your muse the big spoon or the little spoon?

Like I mentioned in my previous post, Katsuie likes to think that he’s dominant, so he’d also like to think that he’ll always end up being the big spoon. So, in general, he’ll always try to be the big spoon. If his partner is taller than him, then he’d probably begrudgingly accept being the little spoon. But it’s not as though partners who are smaller than him have no chance of being the little spoon, though ! Katsuie just likes to be in control of a relationship and the one who’s in charge, because (for most of his verses) it’s one of the only things in his life that he feels like he has control over. With time, Katsuie can grow to trust his partner to the point that he learns that it’s okay to let his partner be in charge sometimes, and that’s when he’d be fine with being the little spoon. ^^

9. Is your muse attracted to any features in particular?

I’m going to link back to an old meme response for this one. Basically, Katsuie is most attracted to people who look and act like Oichi, regardless of their actual gender. However, he also likes kind people who give him affection without any reservations / conditions / etc. ^^

12. Is your muse easily flustered? Do they blush, swear, etc.?

In general, Katsuie isn’t easily flustered by other people...but that’s mostly because he’s ‘off the market’ / dating Oichi in his own mind and doesn’t tend to pick up on when other people flirt with him / show that they’re attracted to him / etc. XD If he somehow manages to pick up on someone flirting with him and he’s not attracted to that person, he’ll probably respond either with disgust or acting offended that they tried to flirt with him when he’s clearly (?) devoted to Oichi. However, if Katsuie somehow manages to pick up on someone flirting with him and he is attracted to that person, he’ll probably start to blush and maybe even flirt back with them in his own weird, hesitant, Katsuie way. XD

Now, if Oichi suddenly showed up in front of him, it’d be a whole different story ! Katsuie would get super-flustered to the point that he’d stop paying attention to almost anyone and anything around him and focus exclusively on her. XD

13. Where is your muse most sensitive?

His neck ! Katsuie be exceptionally weak to being kissed there by his partner or being tickled there with something light like a feather. ^^

She hadn't meant to actually throw the apple, just mime it as she explained a story to one of the younger Servants. The fruit, however, had slipped from her hand and had flown right toward the open doorway. Whether or not it had actually hit the Lancer, she didn't know, but dear god did she feel awful about. "Ah, I'm sorry Lancer! Did it hit you? Are you hurt? I'm so sorry! I didn't meant to throw it at you I promise! It was an accident!"

                  The apple hit the green samurai’s helmet with a dull thud. Katsuie’s gaze dropped to the ground, where the apple had finally come to rest. How was he supposed to react to this ? In life, other samurai, including his own comrades, had thrown worse things at him. And to be fair, he was not at all hurt, thanks to his helmet. But he was not masochistic enough to be happy about being hit in the head with an apple. He would have preferred to dodge it or have it never thrown at him in the first place. This kind of treatment brought back bitter memories for him.

                  Katsuie glanced up once he heard his Master’s voice. He wanted to see this incident as a personal attack and part of a larger conspiracy against him. But how could he act like that ? Cana was not one of the Oda soldiers who had picked on him in the past. She was giving a genuine apology for what seemed to be a legitimate accident. How would it be fair to lash out against her ? Especially when she was the first person in ages who had bothered to give him an apology ? He sighed, adjusting his helmet so that it was centered again.

                   ❛❛ Yes, it hit me, but I am not hurt. ❜❜ He glanced away for a moment. Cana was apologizing so much that it was starting to make him feel uncomfortable. It was not her fault —– he was the one who had considered some sort of retribution against her. Although, what could someone as submissive as him have done ? Give her a dirty look ? 📑 Favorite part of your muse’s backstory?

This isn’t really like a specific “part” of his backstory per se, but the difference in personality between pre-failed-rebellion Katsuie and post-failed-rebellion Katsuie cracks me up every time. XD Past!Katsuie is this terribly confident (bordering on overconfident) young man who won’t shut up about how the Oda clan (and especially its leader, Nobunaga) is all-powerful and will one day conquer everything. He also has a huge sense of entitlement, which leads to him later trying to kill his boss (Nobunaga) to try to become king. Not to mention how he feels entitled to another man’s wife, as well. XD Meanwhile, Default!Katsuie…has pretty much given up. Like, on everything. He hardly even speaks, and even when he does, he only makes some sort of creepy yokai-related comment, or he moans about how he’s in despair because of his poor life choices. Past!Katsuie and Default!Katsuie seem like almost completely different characters at times, although they definitely have their similarities —– they’re both envious and greedy people, they both have a huge sense of entitlement when it comes to certain things / people, etc.

📝 Favorite headcanon for your muse?

I was trying to think of a less creepy headcanon, and one that you haven’t heard before, but…the one that I keep thinking about is this one: Modern!Katsuie has a stalker shrine for Oichi hidden in the back of his closet. It has a few framed pictures of her, along with personal items of hers that either she has lost or that Katsuie has taken or copied in some fashion —– e.g. a couple pencils of hers, a home economics sewing project that she made several months ago, a handkerchief that she dropped by accident (Katsuie would clean it later), a copy of her school report from last term, a few hair accessories of hers, etc. Nothing as weird as a half of a sandwich that she ate or her fingernail clippings or something, but still —– they’re all items that Katsuie definitely shouldn’t have in his possession under any circumstances. It’d be interesting to see how Katsuie would react if someone found that stalker shrine someday and confronted him about it, especially if they’re his friend or his lover. XD If Katsuie somehow fell out of love with Oichi and in love with someone else, I can see him dismantling and throwing away the stalker shrine for Oichi, if he ends up in a deep, serious relationship that lasts for at least a few months with the other person. But there’s a big risk that he’ll eventually just end up replacing Oichi’s stalker shrine with a stalker shrine dedicated to his new lover… XD

                    ❛❛ Do you truly mean that ? ❜❜ How could Katsuie bring himself to trust Lucky’s words ? After all, they had only known each other for a few months ! True, Lucky seemed like someone who was too simple-minded to hurt him. But how difficult was it to fake friendly gestures towards another person ? A ‘hello’ here, a ‘how are you doing’ there —– it was not hard to foster a sense of friendship. So long as a person was motivated enough, they could put in the effort required. Granted, Katsuie had no idea what Lucky was after, besides popularity and Katsuie’s food. Although, if he desired popularity ——– could this be a set-up ? Was Lucky waiting for Katsuie to call him his friend, only to pull the rug out from under him and say ‘just kidding’ ? That sounded a bit too far-fetched, even to Katsuie...but it failed to erase his unease.

                   In the end, Katsuie was a person who was not worth anything. Even if he daydreamed about being worth more, he knew the truth. He hardly had a presence in his class, and contributed little to discussions. It would be easy for —– no, it would actually benefit the class if someone else replaced him.

                    ❛❛ I...doubt that I have done anything that should mean that much to you. ❜❜ Sure, Katsuie had given Lucky his food every now and then. He had tried (and failed) to give him advice on how to become well-respected by his peers. Katsuie had even visited Lucky’s house, one time. But those were minor things. Anybody could have done them in Katsuie’s place. Much greater sacrifices were necessary in order to mean a lot to someone, right ? Giving them a place to stay, or marrying them, or saving them from death. Katsuie could not yet say that he would do anything of that level for Lucky’s sake.

                   Katsuie’s green eyes sparkled in delight. Lady Nouhime had posed a question to him ! Not just any samurai in the service of the Oda clan —– him ! The corners of his lips turned up in a small, smug smile. This was his time to shine ! Even though this was an easy question, he would deliver a reply that would knock her off her feet.

                    ❛❛ My answer is simple. Everything is for Nobunaga-sama’s sake ! I only wish to live long enough to see the entire Land of the Rising Sun become Oda territory. ❜❜ No, he would survive to see his lord’s dream become reality. He was not going to spare even a thought to the contrary. How could he die before he saw the land under the complete control of the Oda clan ?

                    ❛❛ What an awe-inspiring accomplishment it shall be ! I myself can only guess at the most vague outlines of the final product. No doubt Nobunaga-sama shall show us both a sight beyond our wildest imaginations ! ❜❜ The Oda clan mon would be plastered on every battle standard in the country. Every castle would belong to the Oda clan, and each one would be protected by Oda samurai. Overlooking it all would be Lord Nobunaga. Sitting on his throne of skulls, would the results of his work make him grin ? The images that Katsuie conjured in his mind made his heart burn with loyalty to his lord and his clan.

                    ❛❛ In the meantime, I shall enjoy the slaughter of the coming battles, as I have the previous ones. And I shall do my utmost to ensure that they result in victories for the Oda clan ! ❜❜ The last part went without saying, though. After all, had anyone ever managed to suppress the Oda clan for long ? Of course not ——– their forces were numerous and strong !

Katsuie checked the armor covering his body, before reaching up to his helmet. As his fingers brushed the rim, he swept off something small and grainy...dust, perhaps ? But instead, glitter floated down to the ground in front of him. He watched it fall for a few seconds, before he forced himself to answer his Master’s question.

                    ❛❛ ...Yes. It would seem that my helmet has been covered in glitter. ❜❜ Katsuie frowned —– what a disaster ! There was no way that his Master would consider him a reliable Servant, now. How could he blame her ? What kind of Servant walked around covered in glitter without even noticing ? Although...where had that glitter even come from, anyways ? None of the enemies that he had fought as of late would have carried it on them. Then...had someone within Chaldea thrown glitter on him ? His heart sank. Unless one of the child Servants had thrown it on him, he must have already made enemies here. Well, it had only been a matter of time before everyone found out about his sordid past, right ? Even if he kept quiet, there were plenty of books on Sengoku-era history that mentioned him.

                    ❛❛ I should go remove it at once. Excuse me. ❜❜ Katsuie turned around, taking larger and larger strides towards his room. This was nothing to get upset about. It was only glitter, not a piercing insult or a death threat. Besides, his terrible reputation was a result of his own traitorous actions and words. If others hated him, he had no choice but to take responsibility for offending them. But, if all of that was true...then why were tears beginning to pool in his eyes ? Well, for now, he needed to hide them. If his Master spotted them, then she would regard him as an even more pathetic Servant, right ?

                   But to be fair, were either of them acting like friends, anymore ? Katsuie had started poking his nose into her personal affairs. He had asked her about who her ‘friends’ were not long after they had abandoned her. More than that, he was concerned about her well-being. He worried about her when she went out late at night, and he stopped by her house when she got sick. And when it came to physical affection, somehow, they shared a lot of it. Of course, Maeda initiated most of it, whether it was hugging or cuddling together on the couch. But he could not deny the one time that he had laid his head in her lap. To this day, he could not say what had possessed him to go that far. Maeda’s lap felt warm and safe, but...how was he supposed to justify such a flimsy reason ? He idly traced the spot that she had kissed with his index finger. Somewhere along the line, the two of them had started acting more like a couple than friends.

                   Next time, she should aim for his lips. Just so he could be sure about what he felt.

                    ❛❛ Well... ❜❜ Katsuie hesitated. If he had been talking to a normal human being, he would have immediately agreed. But a Heroic Spirit was the one who had asked him this question. What would he consider difficult ? Katsuie was not at all familiar with Arash’s legend. But he was well-aware of the intense training that some of the heroes from his own land had gone through. Katsuie was only human —– he would not have lasted a moment under those regimens.

                    ❛❛ In some ways...you could say that it was hard. Children born to samurai families are held to higher standards than others. From a young age, I was tutored in a multitude of subjects, including how to fight. I entered my first real battle as a teenager, and was fortunate to do well. Others did not. On multiple occasions, I could only watch as my friends fell in battle. ❜❜ The green samurai paused —– he had given quite a breadth of information, there. Katsuie was a bit displeased with how jumbled and disorganized it had come out, though.

                    ❛❛ Samurai also hold themselves to a higher set of morals. Although I suppose that I have no right to talk about such a thing anymore... ❜❜ Betraying one’s lord was the worst sin that a samurai could commit. His rebellion was such a failure that even his own lord had refused to execute him. Katsuie should have put an end to himself afterwards, but he could not. His hands shook too much; in the end, he was too much of a coward to do it. Instead, he had struggled on for a few years afterwards, before dying at the hands of an enemy. He had lived out the rest of his life in shame and dishonor.

                    ❛❛ In my case, I suppose...the toughest part was not growing up as a samurai. It was when my own foolish actions cost me the right to be a samurai. ❜❜

My favorite thing about Katsuie is that, since he’s a morally gray muse, he can end up going in so many different directions from a moral standpoint ! ^^ His routes in Sengoku Basara 4 are a good example of this —– in his normal route, he ends up doing nothing very useful in the end and continues to serve as a pawn of the Oda clan (a more neutral route); in his anime route, he goes off the deep end after killing Sakon, listening to Hideyoshi’s advice, and getting kicked out of the Oda clan, to the point that he ends up killing Oichi in a stupid attempt to become strong, regrets it, and then forces the Mikado to kill him (a more evil route); and finally, in his drama route, Katsuie gets mentored by Masamune and ends up figuring out that he still wants to have a future after all, so he kills Nobunaga and therefore gives himself the freedom to explore his future and have a chance to grow out of being a depressing guy who doesn’t really do anything (a more good route). His threads are no exception —– he’s done evil things, he’s done more neutral or self-serving things, and occasionally, he does something that helps someone else and doesn’t just benefit himself. Basically, he’s very versatile when it comes to morality, which allows him to play a part in many different potential plots ! ^^
