— another lost battle down the drain . he should've known better by now , especially when challenging one of the best trainers out there . they were ready to ( rather unhappily ) swallow their loss -- until she spoke .

— show him the way ? really ? the ex-champion of Hoenn would show them the way ? a starstruck look befalls his face , and remains far longer than he'd like to admit , words escaping him . he's bouncing on his toes . calm down . they shake their hands out . don't be weird , barry . soon enough , though , they're flapping their arms vigorously , unable to contain his excitement as a big smile appears on his face .

can’t sleep. gonna talk abt the gym leaders for my homebrew pokemon region

couple of notes:

bc this region was conceived as a TTRPG setting the gym leaders are meant to be fought in any order (save for one who must be fought last), so they have rotating teams depending on how many badges a trainer already has. that said they all do still have an “ace” pokemon aka the toughest in their party and the one to watch out for. they have a low tier ace, mid tier ace, and high tier ace.

instead of typing, the gyms all have themes bc i think that’s fun

gym leaders my have pokemon not normally found in the region. they’re supposed to be experts in their field ofc! so it makes sense to me they’d be doing some traveling in their lives

all gym battles are best 2 outta 3. i might change that for higher level battles tho

all character names are subject to change bc i’m Bad At Names

ok! here they are in order of them being written down in my notes

Leader: Rex. he gives the Scale badge as his theme is reptiles

i already talked abt him and Luna here, but the tldr is that he’s v passionate abt pokemon husbandry, and is v active in school/education programs

low tier ace: Aron. mid tier ace: Seviper high tier ace: Kommo-o

Leader: Luna. she give the night badge as her theme is nocturnal pokemon

like i mentioned, i’ve talked abt her before. tldr she pulls double duty as gym leader and head librarian. she’s usually busy and always tired. ppl joke that booking a match w her is half the challenge

low tier ace: Duskull. mid tier ace: Umbreon. high tier ace: Noctowl.

Leader: Rowan: he give the Forest badge as all his pokemon are arboreal

he’s a v quiet and reserved man. his gym’s locations in Sharpford has him living in the midst of protected forests. he’s not a pokemon ranger himself, nor has he ever been, but he helps out w the nearby ranger bases throughout the woods. however unknown to everyone he’s being paid off by a poaching operation to turn a blind eye and help cover their tracks

low tier ace: Skwovet. mid tier ace: Hawlucha. high tier ace: Trevenant.

Leader: Trent. they give the Mud badge as their pokemon are amphibious.

big conservationist. actually did used to be a ranger before they decided to settle down and work in education. the biggest friendliest guy you’ll ever meet. their gym being in Fermat means it’s surrounded by swamp and forest on all sides. with their pokemon perfectly adapted for this environment they occasionally join the rangers on search and rescue missions. has a bad knee from their ranger days, but they doesn’t let that slow them down

low tier ace: Mudkip mid tier ace: Lombre high tier ace: Seismitoad.

Leader: Lily. she gives the Breeze badge as most her pokemon’s primary mode of transportation is flight

might be a bit of an airhead (cue laughter) but she’s deadly serious when it comes to competitions. the windy seaside Metrona City is the perfect place for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and thanks largely to Lily’s efforts in bring the sport to Salmar Metrona City is the region capital for the Pokeathlon

low tier ace: Wingull. mid tier ace: Yanma. high tier ace: Altaria

Leader: Edith. she gives the Garden badge as most of her pokemon are grass or fairy type to aid in, you know, gardening

the oldest gym leader. she’s been manning the Corda Town gym and overseeing its greenhouses for decades now, and she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. she’s known to the younger locals as “Auntie Edith”. she’s also p traditional. she believes that the league, the contest circuit, and now this “pokeathlon” thing have gotten to big. too many people visit to watch the events in person, and then they decide to move here, so then more marsh needs to be paved over to build the homes, so now more ppl here are making a living off the tourism, repeat the cycle ad nauseam.

low tier ace: Petilil. mid tier ace: Ribombee. high tier ace: Muk - Alola

Leader: Priscilla. they give the Junk badge as they research “artificial” pokemon, many of which are said to be discarded trash and the like

many ppl avoid going to them last bc, 1: the gym is located kinda out of the way and 2: all this research involves a lot of ghost and psychic types so the area around their lab/gym miiiiiight be a lil cursed. Priscilla looks like your typical mad scientist and acts like one too, but rly they’re just super enthusiastic abt their work. they also don’t see why ppl are so scared of their gym like, just don’t make eye contact w any dolls you might see? make sure to turn off all of your electronics before you get too close? do not try to pick up any trash you might see. come on ppl, it’s just basic safety here

low tier ace: porygon. mid tier ace: porygon2. high tier ace: porygon-z

Leader: Cora. she’s the only leader you have to fight last. gives the Terrain badge bc she specializes in terrain/weather/status effects and bc in order to have earned the right to face her you must’ve travel Salmar far and wide.

she’s the last gym leader bc her battle style is highly technical so it can only be preformed using higher level pokemon + it gives trainers time to master their own skills before facing her. her gym is in the capital of Salmar; Harmony City. she’s a p big celebrity but she always has time for new challengers. she’s been known to cancel and fully refund events/meet-ups if it means making scheduling a battle easier. another reason she’s located in Harmony City specifically is bc it’s the starting point for Victory Road. its docks are the only ones that take ppl to Bolbar island. from there spectators are taken to the league stadium, and trainers are dropped off to navigate their way to Coda as they choose

for now her ace is a klefki as i remember when those little Fucks owned the meta. it’s subject to change tho as i dig more and more into the pokerole meta
