Ukraine continues to improve at shooting down Putin’s cruise missiles. 81.8% is a decent percentage. But NATO needs to provide them with enough defensive systems to get that figure close to 100%.
Tumblr media
This is Day 251 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But on just one day (October 31st) Ukraine shot down 11.3% of all the Russian cruise missiles destroyed since the start of the invasion.
Russian losses continue to soar. At the current rate, Russian fatalities will hit 100,000 around February 24th – the first anniversary of Putin’s three-day “special operation”.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Kharkiv to visit Ukrainian troops on the front lines.
Today's visit to Kharkiv is the first time President Zelensky has left the Kyiv region since the start of Russia's invasion.
He met the troops who have not just defended Kharkiv, but repelled the Russians, almost pushing them back to the international border.
The fact that he was able to visit shows just how much the tide has turned in Ukraine's second city. A few weeks ago, this morale-boosting visit would never have been possible.
While he was in Kharkiv he fired the local SBU (security) chief for not doing enough to protect the city at the start of the war.
The president said he had fired Roman Dudin, the chief of the Security Service of Ukraine for the Kharkiv region "for the fact that he did not work on the defence of the city from the first days of the full-scale war, but thought only about himself".
youtube
President Zelenskyy also awarded medals to some of the defenders of Kharkiv.

It’s difficult to imagine Vladimir Putin visiting a combat zone. It’s possible that he would meet the same fate of some senior Russian commanders who were shot or run over with tanks by their own troops.
Of course Putin could have a «пяточная шпора» (bone spur) which prevents him from getting within 300 km of a battle.

Since the Russian invasion began, Putin hasn’t been closer than an estimated 380 km to Ukraine. And he hadn’t been closer than 996 km to Kherson. He spends most of his time cowering in the Kremlin or at his suburban villa.
Putin is probably afraid of being shot with a rusty rifle by one of his own conscripts.
From AFP via @nexta_tv, residents of recently liberated Kherson don’t mind putting up with hardships as long as Putin’s war criminals are gone.

From @Biz_Ukraine_mag on Twitter.
Last Friday, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin illegally “annexed” four oblasts (provinces) partially occupied by Russia in Ukraine. Putin said they would be part of Russia “forever”.
On the next day Russia’s excuse for an army was forced by Ukrainian forces to evacuate the city of Lyman (Лиман) in one of those oblasts.
youtube
^^^ They pronounce Lyman correctly in that vid. 🙂🇺🇦
Putin keeps embarrassing himself. And his failures make right-wing Putin toadies in the West (lookin’ at you – Tucker Carlson!) seem even more pathetic for regarding Big Talk Vlad as a pillar of strength.
Putin is reduced to having public hissy fits and tantrums. History will view him as the person who has weakened Russia more than anybody else since Hitler’s invasion.

Russia has passed a grim milestone. About 1 in 5,000 of all Russians who were alive on February 23rd have died in the current war.
Russia has an estimated population of 142,021,981 – (source: The World Fact Book). With its own death toll of 28,500 from the Ukraine invasion, that means 1 out of every 4,983 Russian citizens has died in this unnecessary catastrophe.
On the average, this means that every medium-small town or every urban neighborhood has lost one person in Putin’s conflict. Most likely, everybody knows somebody or knows a person who knows somebody who was killed or seriously wounded in the so called “special operation”.
28,500 is a lot of people.
28,500 is greater than the number of active duty military personnel in many countries including Serbia, Tanzania, Hungary, Norway, and Portugal.
28,500 is greater than the population of the capitals of three US states: Vermont, South Dakota, and Maine. It’s also quickly closing in on Frankfort, Kentucky.
28,500 is about half of the death toll for US military in the Vietnam War (1955-1975). At the current rate, Russia will match the US Vietnam fatalities around August 11th; 24 weeks instead of 20 years.
More recently, 28,500 is almost double the 14,453 Soviet troops killed in the 9+ year Soviet-Afghan War.
For some visual representation, 28,500 is the seating capacity of A.W. Mumford Stadium on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge.
Tumblr media
So this would be a good time for Russia to reflect on the losses it has sustained and the probable losses it will continue to sustain if this needless war is not ended.

Many Trump Republicans idolize Vladimir Putin because he fits into their mindset of male superiority. Tucker Carlson is a notably high profile cheerleader for Putin and Russia.
On Aug. 29 Tucker Carlson of Fox News attacked President Biden’s policy on Ukraine, asserting among other things: “By any actual reality-based measure, Vladimir Putin is not losing the war in Ukraine. He is winning the war in Ukraine.” Carlson went on, by the way, to assert that Biden is supporting Ukraine only because he wants to destroy the West.
Carlson’s timing was impeccable. Just a few days later, a large section of the Russian front near Kharkiv was overrun by a Ukrainian attack. It’s important to note that Putin’s forces weren’t just pushed back; they appear to have been routed.
LOL! Tucker Carlson is feeble and he doesn’t feel right unless he can worship powerful, highly masculine (/sarcasm) manly men like Trump, Putin, and Viktor Orbán.
Of course Cucker Tarlson isn’t the only Russia-worshiping MAGA weasel.
But there’s something special about the MAGA embrace of the mystique of Russian might: a worldview that equates tough-guy swagger with effectiveness. This worldview has warped the right’s perception not just of the Russian Army but also of how to deal with many other issues. And it’s worth asking where it comes from.
Many Republicans have admired Putin for a long time — even before Donald Trump took over the G.O.P. Back in 2014, for example, Rudy Giuliani said of Putin, “That’s what you call a leader.” And Trump continued to praise Putin even after he invaded Ukraine.
So it’s not hard to see where the MAGA right’s admiration for Putinism comes from. After all, Putin’s Russia is autocratic, brutal and homophobic, with a personality cult built around its ruler. What’s not to like?
Actually, if you look up loser in the dictionary, you may find a picture of Putin there. Putin is a delusional bully who has made a series of blunders motivated by his desire to reanimate the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Running a country with nostalgia as a governing philosophy usually doesn’t go well.
Putin’s kleptocratic and hyper-centralized régime has made Russia weaker rather than stronger. He did invest in a couple of exotic weapons, but the Russian armed forces remained poorly trained, with defective equipment, and with terrible morale. All those shirtless Putin photos admired by the MAGA crowd don’t add up to military competence.
On the right, however, approval of authoritarian regimes is all bound up with assertions about their military prowess. For example, last year Ted Cruz tweeted about a video comparing scenes of a tough-looking Russian soldier with a shaved head with a U.S. Army recruiting video featuring a female corporal raised by two mothers. “Perhaps a woke, emasculated military is not the best idea,” opined Cruz.
Actually, the U.S. military is sort of woke, in the sense that it is highly diverse and inclusive, encourages independent thinking and initiative on the part of junior officers and is, at the higher levels, quite intellectual.
Yep, brains count and the Trump Republicans pride themselves in stupidity. Remember how they pushed bleach, ivermectin, and hydroxychloroquine as cures for COVID-19? 🤮
The Russian Army, on the other hand, definitely isn’t woke. Conscripts face brutal hazing. According to Mark Hertling, a former commander of U.S. forces in Europe, it’s riddled with “mafialike” corruption and its officers are terrible.
The broader point is that modern wars aren’t won by looking tough. Courage — which the Ukrainians have shown in almost inconceivable abundance — is essential; but it doesn’t have much to do with bulging biceps. And bravery must go hand in hand with being smart and flexible, qualities the Russian Army evidently lacks.
Did I mention that women make up more than a fifth of Ukraine’s military?
The higher the level of education is for women, the higher the standard of living tends to be for a country. While Ukraine is not rich, Russian invaders were astonished at the standard of living of Ukrainians whose shops and homes they looted.
This century, Ukraine has had high ranking women in government positions including a prime minister. In Russia, it’s the same old stale sycophantic Putin male cronies all the time. Putin, like MAGA imbeciles, has difficulty relating to woman as equals. This is not just a personal psychological problem but something which creates a national weakness.
EDIT: Speaking of strength and weakness, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today visited the recently liberated city of Izyum. It’s roughly 20 km from Russian lines.
youtube
By contrast, Vladimir Putin is rarely outside Moscow and hasn’t ever visited the troops he sent to Ukraine. He probably knows that some of them would love to shoot him.

The Kyiv Independent has begun a series on Ukrainian History called “Ukraine’s True History”. Their page about it gives this description.
This material is funded by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting within the program “Ukraine Forward: Amplifying Analysis.” The program is financed by the MATRA Programme of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine.
Episode 1 (above) is an overview which tackles misconceptions often spread by Kremlin propagandists and tankies.
Related to Ukrainian history, but not produced by the Kyiv Independent, the journal Foreign Affairs did an extended audio interview with historian Timothy Snyder. Prof. Snyder has been studying and writing about Ukraine for years. He has also written the #1 New York Times bestseller On Tyranny about the threat to democracy in the US.

If you’re looking for the anti-Tucker, at least regarding Ukraine, it’s Timothy Snyder. He could wipe the floor with Tucker Carlson – wherever the latter is hanging out these days.

The number of Russian fatalities in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is now over 200,000.
200,590 is greater than the populations of 29 of the 50 US state capitals. By another measure, that’s the equivalent of about 46% of all the US military fatalities in World War II.
Some people claim the stats from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense are high. But last year Russia accidentally released its own stats online and they were fairly close to the Ukrainian estimates of the time.
So when there’s an updated version of this book, the authors will need to include a chapter on Vladimir Putin.
Tumblr media
Today is Day 449 of Putin’s 3 day invasion. He keeps replacing commanders at a dizzying pace.
Tumblr media
The implication is that it’s their fault and not his that the war isn’t going well for Russia. Never mind who originally chose the generals and started the war in the first place.
Putin will go down in history as an enormous failure in addition to being a war criminal.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a trip to Poland this week. It was only his third trip abroad since the start of Russia’s illegal invasion. Saturation coverage of Donald Trump’s arraignment may have caused news of Zelenskyy’s visit to get overlooked by some.
This was more than just a social visit. Ukraine is aiming to acquire more air power. Poland can help with that.

^^^ Last year I found the video for the old Soviet ditty “The Red Army Is the Strongest”. I meant to post it in an ironic way after one of the many Russian retreats in Ukraine (forgot which one) but misplaced the link.
So by the time I rediscovered the link in my notes, the actual video had gone missing – though the YouTube account associated with it hadn’t been deleted and still seems to be active.
Apparently the discrepancy between the title of the song and the series of embarrassing Russian military failures in Ukraine was simply unintentionally hilarious.
If you really want to know what it sounds like, it can be found here at a different account. If you know Russian or (better yet) Ukrainian, this song begs for updated lyrics based on the self-inflicted military disasters caused by Putin.

In case you're not familiar with the Time of Troubles...
False Dmitry
One could argue that Russia is in a modern Time of Troubles that began with the ill-fated Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
Regardless, Vladimir Putin has inflicted an incalculable amount of damage on Russia for the sake of his ego. His "special operation" in Ukraine was supposed to last 2 or 3 days. Today it is in its 510th day.
He has unintentionally revealed to the world what a poor military he has; size doesn't matter if troops are poorly trained, badly equipped, and usually drunk. And those troops are not exactly eager to die just to make him look good.
He thinks that keeping the war going will make him seem strong. But it is having the opposite effect.
People who have a strong need to always appear tough often are trying to compensate for their own weakness and insecurity. Putin's fragility is on full international display.

Today (October 7th) is Putin’s birthday. 👎🏼💩🤮
It’s too late to send him an insulting birthday card with a message like...
Your two day “special operation” in Ukraine is now 226 days old. LOL
Most people grow with age, Putin shrinks.
Tumblr media
Ukraine has liberated roughly 500 square kilometers of territory in the past week from Putin’s war criminals. This can’t be one of Putin’s favorite birthdays. Every day sees new humiliations for Putin’s army.
youtube
We’re not going to sing “Happy Birthday” to Putin. 🎶 But here’s a song from Ukraine to serenade ol’ Vladimir as he turns 70. It’s mostly in Ukrainian, but a few words (notably “Nyet, Vladimir”) are in Russian so he gets the message.
youtube
EDIT: More bad news for human rights abuser Vladimir Putin on his birthday. The Nobel Peace Prize was just awarded to human rights activists in all three East Slavic nation states.
