I need to know your thoughts on who's been to the refuge and how many times!
ouu okay! i've never really thought abt this before, but here we go:
JACK - i think Jack has only been to the refuge once, but it was for a really long time. like he was in there for at least a year, maybe even longer.
DAVID - okay i'm doing him bc i can. in a world where the refuge wasn't shut down due to the strike, i can imagine he went once bc of his snarkyness but the boys got him out in less than four days. || "dave's a schoolboy, he ain't gonna be handling the refuge well!" (meanwhile, david's more or less as fine as you can be in the refuge, he's just grumpy)
RACETRACK - i think he's probably gone like three times. got thrown in for stealing, disturbance of the general public, and probably assault (but who hasn't punched a guy on the street?). these we're probably like week long stays, no more than a month. i think he'd get too rowdy & restless to stay. i also think he probably tried to beat jack's escape every time he landed himself in there, just for shits & giggles. || "i think i gotcha beat this time, jackie." "yeah, and i'm sure that has nothing to do with why you're limping & busted up with a shiner."
CRUTCHIE - i think crutchie only went during the strike. not that he didn't do 'refuge worthy' shit. i just think he was really careful about it. i imagine he wouldn't be too eager to land himself in the refuge, none of the boys would, but especially with his disability. he'd definitely be fucking shit up but it was on the downlow
SPOT - let's assume all newsies, no matter what borough can get sent to the refuge. cuz tbh i don't know the rules, but they sure can in '92sies! anyway. i imagine spot's been there a couple of time, nothing in the doubke digits but more than a lot of boys. however, i also think spot knows it's inevitable he ends up there & has run through multiple different drills with his newsies on how to rescue him.
ALBERT - i'd say he's been in there like two times, and one of them he definitely got thrown in with another newsie. probably racetrack. again, really short stay.
ELMER - has never, will never go to the refuge. he can't afford to go to the refuge w/ the size of his family. tbh the strike made him shiver in his timbers, especially when he saw crutchie getting locked up.
tldr; i think a good majority of newsies have been to the refuge. jack only went once, however i think it was for like a year (at the time, i can imagine manhattan either didnt have a leader or he just so happened to be leaving a little bit after jack showed up.) or even longer. david went once (if the refuge hadn't got shut down) but the boys got him out quickly. racetrack was three times, kept trying to make his escape cooler than jack's. crutchie only went during the strike. spot's gone quite a few times but always has a plan. elmer has never gone.

YES OKAY SO.
my toxic newsies trait is that i know nothing abt any side characters, or the way the fandom perceives them. sooo literally all i know abt ike & hotshot (even just as separate people n not a couple) is what i've been told by like two people. so take what i say w/ a grain of salt. on THAT note.
ike is very sweet, often very quiet. but i think hotshot brings out that tough side of him. he's usually scared of hurting people's feelings & in general just tried to be ad nice as possible. but i feel like he KNOWS hotshot's feelings aren't going to get hurt (he's not sure his boyfriends feelings can get hurt). so i imagine his sarcastic side comes out more w/ hotshot
ex. "hey, ike, i don't think this is the best sellin' spot."
"what told ya that? the same stack of papers we had this morning, or the penniless pouch in ya pocket?"
and hotshot just laughs it off and drags ike off to another spot
on the opposite side, i think ike brings out the affectionate side of hotshot that no-one else gets. i don't think he's a sweet talker, not even with ike. he doesn't do the "you're the most beautiful guy i know" thing, nothing like that. but if he thinks ike looks nice, he'll interlace their hands and kiss the bottom of his wrist. he'd wrap a hand around ike's waist and curl it up to scratch his hair, just to show the boy he loves him.
ex. "stop lookin' at me weird, hotshot."
and hotshot just rolls his eyes and puts his head in the crevice in between ike's neck & shoulder.
i also think that hotshot would go to manhattan more than ike would go to brooklyn. and it's not that ike is against going to brooklyn, hotshot would just rather be sweet w/ his boyfriend in manhattan. bc if they were to so much as hug in brooklyn territory, he would never hear the end of it.
i ALSO THINK (sorry i just keep saying it lmao) that they aren't constant selling partners. like they sell together maybe once every two weeks. they don't really feel the need to be with each other every day, they just take a day off once a week to have a date and debrief everything that happened that week. i think once they get older, and their relationship develops, they would spend more time together. maybe two to three times every other week.

CAN I JUST SAY I LOVE YOUR BRAIN OKAY BUT FURTHER CONSIDER TWO OF THEM SENT BACK AT THE SAME TIME BUT NOT KNOWING ABOUT EACH OTHER.
OMG OMG. racetrack and dave both being sent back, but they have completely different ideas on what to do.
racetrack is defeated, utterly defeated. he's known jack for years, and the jack he knows would never betray them, him, like that. the jack he knows bandaged his arm when he was six years old. he would never betray them. so he's done. he's done with the strike, done with the losing, done with it all. all he wants is for everything to get back to normal, so he is going to do just that. he spends all of his time arguing, convincing, begging jack to not go through with the strike.
david, on the other hand, is determined. he knows he can do better. he knows there's a logical way to fix what's happened. and he's still nervous, and scared, but he knows deep inside there's someway to fix things. there has to be some little thing that he can do that will change the entire outcome. so he spends his days and nights planning, coming up with every possible solution.
this basically ends with the two of them at each others throats. racetrack fighting against david with everything he has in him, and david trying to plan around racetrack's own plans.
