Full thread here.
Context: The actor of the character Arondir, from the series The Rings of Power, Ismael Cruz Córdova revealed that he had to hired an on set therapist to deal with the racist backlash he faced. He also states that his Paypay was hacked, people found out his address, his friends got nasty messages on he himself got death threats.
And of course the #RespectTolkien crowds is loosing their minds again, claiming that all of this is bullshit, he is lying and they won't believe it until he shows 'evidence' that the racist backlash he faced actually existed.
Tumblr media
Maybe they should go and check their own posts. (Source post.)
Some time ago when the first images of the Lotr Magic the Gathering Cards were shown and people were livid because Aragorn was black, remember how someone went ahead and "fixed" the art and made him white. There was also a black cosplayer who was got hate for his cosplay as a guard from Numenor because "there are no black people in middle earth!! 😡" And now this. I am really fucking tired of people in this fandom spewing racist bullshit under the thin veil of "providing criticism" and "preserving Tolkien's legacy" and it annoys me off even more how the majority of people either actively ignores it or even goes on to support these people
Also, this isnt an invitation to talk about how much you love/ hate the the Rings of Power. Literally not the point of this post
In addition; if you feel the need to discuss with these people, don't tag Ismael in it, because he has asked specifically to be left out of stuff like that.

Chapter Twenty-Four
Despite your sullenness, the next few days were actually pleasant ones, days that made you forget who you really were. For you and Halbrand had remained true to your desire to be false with your new companions. At least for the moment. It was inevitable that they would discover the truth about the two of you once you reached Pelargir, as the Southlanders, perhaps Bronwyn and Arondir, would hopefully rejoice at the return of their king. You were deceiving them more for the normality it provided, the lack of tension, and perhaps sparing yourselves of the less favourable treatment that being completely honest would bring.
Garion was a very talkative fellow though, asking questions about where you hailed from, and what your background was. 'Hal' answered for the both of you, stating you were Númenóreans, heading back to Pelargir to make the journey home. When Garion pressed about the reasons for your trip to Middle-earth, you simply said, "Our business is our own." to which Halbrand deftly added, "What my love means to say, is that we were here visiting some of her family that left Númenor when she was a child. It was more emotional than she had anticipated. Some were lost."
Garion's face turned sorrowful and he offered his condolences. This put a stop to any further questions about your purpose in Middle-earth, a fact you were grateful to Halbrand for, as you did not wish to lie to these people any further. One afternoon, seated in the wagon, you looked on back as Halbrand was attempting to teach one of the children, a girl named Arianwen, how to ride your horse. You couldn't take your eyes off them as they slowly walked then trotted along on your steed. Olwenna caught you staring. "I used to looked at Garion like that, when I first met him." "Like what?" The lady laughed at you. "You know very well what like. Unless...” You smiled at her, blushing. "I have never felt this way about anyone I've ever met." "How long has it been now?"
Your brow furrowed a moment whilst you considered her question. All the days and nights had bled together, the passing of time was something you had not been keeping track of. Not since Halbrand had come into your life. "Maybe a month, close to two... I'm honestly not sure." "That's when you know it's been good. Days only need marking when something bad befalls us. So we don't forget our past, and we can learn from it." Olwenna spoke sagely. There had been some dark days of late, scattered amongst the bliss. Yet despite standing out in your memory more than the joyful occasions, they still fused together with them, your time loving Halbrand had been all encompassing, the good and the bad. The image of Halbrand before you, encouraging this young girl, smiling, looking proud as ever, it was a complete contrast to the image of him from only days before, covered in blood, cackling with devilish glee, destroying all life around him. They seemed to be two different people, yet they were one and the same. He was both king and dark lord. And you could not deny you loved it all, regardless of whether or not you should.
As luck would have it, your party came upon an inn on the side of the road, just as the sun was preparing to fall beneath the horizon. It was modest in appearance, the wood that formed it perhaps not constructed by experts, yet it didn't look like it would collapse either. The double storey building came across as both daring and impressive. It seemed a place welcoming of all kinds of people, no matter your standing or what deeds you might have committed before you crossed it's threshold. A bath... a bed... Your eyes gleamed at the thought of these comforts you had not had for quite some time. You prayed they had space enough for you all. Coming to a stop, Garion and Padrig made sure to secure the wagon and horses, before leading the way through the doors of the inn. Halbrand and yourself hung back, happy to let Garion do all the talking, preferring to hopefully go unnoticed amongst your companions, lest anyone recognise you.
"Evening, squire!" his affable voice boomed at the fellow stood behind the bar. "Would you happen to have room enough for us? Just for the night." You watched over Garion's shoulder as the barman counted your group, nervously clinging to your love. Making his assessment, he then made his offer. "I've got two rooms that should fit you alright, though it might be a little crowded." "Perfect, we'll take 'em. Thank you." Garion placed his payment at the hands of the barman, who proceeded to guide you up the stairs to your accommodation. "Once you're settled, you’re welcome to come downstairs for food, my cook is about to serve supper. Oh and there is a washroom down the hall should you need to take a bath." The barman smiled before wandering back down to his post, leaving you all to figure out the sleeping arrangements. The rooms were small, comprising of two beds in each, and a small wardrobe to store your property. This inn was modest inside and out.
"It seems the only way to do this is down the middle, five in each room. The kids have one bed, then Gisal and Owin in the other. Which leaves Padrig, our new friends, and Olwenna and myself. I'll take the floor, Padrig you can have the bed." "Uncle, I can sleep on the floor, I don't mind." "You're young, boy! I don't want your body achin' before it has to. Now, does that suit everyone?" There were smiles and nods all around, especially from the kids. It seems you were all grateful to have some respite from the wagon, only if for a night. Halbrand took your bag, placing it beside his in the wardrobe. The others headed down the stairs to feast, yet as you turned to follow, you felt Halbrand's touch hold you in place. Pulling you flush against him, he wrapped himself around you, kissing your cheek, your neck, before resting his head on your shoulder. You sighed, happy for the embrace.
"At last... a moment of isolation." he spoke, his voice low. "Oh how I've missed this feeling... just you and me... alone... your body against mine..." Halbrand's hands were wandering to places you ached for him to touch, his lips on your neck again. "My love..." "Yes?" he replied, barely interested in what you had to say. His mind was focusing on... more important matters at hand. "The door... it's open... oh..." you told him, gasping as his hand found where your womanhood lay beneath the layer of your dress. "And...?" he questioned, biting your ear lobe. You shuddered with delight and turned around to have his mouth collide with your own. It had been days since you had been able to lose yourself to him like this, and you missed it as much as he did.
The clearing of a throat entered the room, forcing the two of you apart, making you jump. "The children want to know if you'll be joining us for supper?" asked Olwenna, the biggest smirk on her face, trying not to laugh. "Sorry." Feeling your cheeks redden, your eyes averted her gaze as you answered her. "Of course. We'll be down in a moment." "Wonderful." She practically clicked her heels as she exited the room. "Oh goodness..." you exclaimed, Halbrand laughing at your embarrassment. You gave him a playful tap with the back of your hand, and he kissed you again, not wanting the moment to end. "Come on," you spoke between touches of lips, "Let's not keep your admirers waiting." Locking your fingers with his, the two of you made your way down to join the others.
This supper was the best food you had eaten since your feast with Elrond and Galadriel back in Eregion. Juicy meats filled with flavour, freshly baked soft bread, and boiled vegetables drenched in butter which included, of course, potatoes. It seemed one of the advantages of an inn situated on a road such as this meant that there was a constant flow of food and supplies passing through, and the people carrying these were more than happy to trade some of what they had for a warm bed to rest in.
The atmosphere was a cheerful and lively one, the tavern area filled to bursting with the occupants of the other rooms. A boisterous group of men were consistently clinking their cups of ale, laughing at the stories they were telling each other. You didn't catch every word of it, but it seemed they had been on some uproarious adventures. Across from them were a pair of women seated with two young boys, whose interactions you watched with fascination. The boys, clearly siblings, carried on with playful fuss that ceased the moment one of them started throwing peas at the other. Chastised by the woman that could only be his mother, you looked on as the other woman put her arm around her, which was acknowledged with a loving kiss to the top of her hand. They were a family. You couldn't help but smile at them.
Halbrand followed your eyes to what was holding their gaze. "Is there something else about you I do not know, my love?" he spoke cheekily, sipping his ale. "Have you known the love of a woman?" Blushing, you moved your smile to him, unsure of what words might pass your lips. "No... I haven't. But-" "But?" "I cannot deny I have desired it. There's just something..." you glanced back over at the women as you spoke, "There's a different beauty within them... a warmth, a tenderness, an elegance..." Your voice trailed off, your mind lost in thought. Catching yourself, you turned the discussion back on your love. "And what about you? You can't tell me you've existed as long as you have without laying with another man?" Halbrand chuckled, taking another swig of his ale. He admitted nothing, but he didn't need to, for the look on his face spoke volumes. You smirked at him, sipping your own ale, very satisfied with the exchange that had just taken place.
There were rumblings amongst the children for some kind of dessert, to which Garion adamantly replied, "We cannot take advantage of their hospitality. We should be grateful enough for this feast and not let greed become us." "Pleeeeeeeeease! Please please pleeeeeeease! Please!" Their voices in unison, a shrill cry to their leader that was clearly unwavering. Olwenna leaned over to her love, interjecting, "Perhaps you could at least inquire with the barman? It couldn't hurt, let them have a little treat, Garion, they've been through too much."
"Well I can't say no to you, can I?" Garion sighed. "Alright, alright, I'll ask." The kids cheered and you and Halbrand laughed at their joyfulness. It had been quite sobering to be around these innocent little creatures for the past few days. Almost as if they were a shield of light keeping the darkness at bay. A shield that grew stronger the further down the road you travelled, the further away from the shadow you were. Garion waltzed back over to your table, looking deflated. "I'm sorry children..." The collective 'awww's' from the young ones were not pleasant, but it seemed Garion was not done speaking. "They've only got blackberry pie!" The children cheered as the barman brought out three plates that held the sweet treat, and all of you were laughing at Garion's heartwarming deception.
"Anyone else?" offered the barman. A few of you rose your hands, and he counted again like before, taking his leave to quickly return with more servings. "None for you, Hal?" quizzed Garion. "No, I am quite full after that feast." spoke 'Hal', rising from his seat. "In fact I might take a bath before retiring for the evening." he announced, glancing at you, hinting. There was some unfinished business after all. Halbrand gulped the last of his ale, politely bowing his head to your companions before wandering over to the stairs. Olwenna caught your gaze then, as she was trying to make subtle facial gestures to encourage you to follow him. You stood rather abruptly, declaring to your companions, "Yes, I think I might do the same as well. Goodnight." you nodded, Olwenna unable to stifle a snicker at just how unsubtle you were. Hastily making your exit, you swore you could hear Garion mumble, "She could've just said she was going upstairs to-" "Shhh Uncle!" Padrig cut him off, groaning. "You don't need to say it!"
You couldn't help but giggle as you caught up with Halbrand on the stairs, and taking your hand, he lead you straight to the washroom, locking the door behind you.

Some thoughts on the newly released images of Amazon's "The Rings of Power"
After the recently released covers for Empire Magazine, we know also have images from the article in HD – and I have want to briefly write a few thoughts about them. There is good and bad in these images, but for me the overall tendency is still negative.
But let's go into details, and start with the Harfoots:
Tumblr media
Compared to the Hobbits in the Shire, these images indeed give the impression of a society from an earlier time in their development, and a more simplly structured society. The Harfoots aren't supposed to be the Hobbits from the Shire, and the images show that. In that regard they look fine. From a design point of view my main issue is are the leaves in people's hair, and Sadoc's hair looks ridiculous.
Content-wise it's more difficult. I love Tolkien's Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but I have no interest in the Harfoots, especially not in the Second Age. Maybe the show will make me care about one of these characters eventually, but so far these images don't spark the tiniest interest.
Tumblr media
In addition to the other four images with Harfoots, a fifth was included and it's just too much. I'll happily that the design of these lamps is beautiful, and the lightning could be nice with the sun shining through the trees – but it's already a bit too yellow, and the character designer here just looks weird. It already feels like a scene that you'd skip in a hypothetical rewatch.
Then there is the human Halbrand:
Tumblr media
Just like the first time we saw him, it's remarkable how I just feel nothing about him when I see this image. The only thing I noticed once again that his clothes seem weird; this time it's because there seem several suns printed on his shirt, and they don't seem to be drawn (too similar and symmetrical). That feels off, but maybe that's just me.
Next up is Arondir:
Tumblr media
This image has good lightning as well, and it looks kinda cool because Ismael Cruz Córdova looks cool. However, the character design itself still baffles me – the short hair on Elves won't ever agree with me and I would have loved to see how cool this shot would have been if Arondir would've had long hair. In addition, the more I look at the clothes the more I get a kind of Roman style from them that I'll discuss further below, and that's not a style choice for the Elves I appreciate.
Tumblr media
In the image with Arondir, Bronwyn and Theo (I assume), and while Nazanin Boniadi is a beautiful woman the character design doesn't do anything for me either. As for Theo – it's an unlucky still for him, the facial expression just makes him look kind of goofy. I wonder what made them pic this still.
Now we get to some characters that are actually know from Tolkien's writings. Let's start with the two characters that disappointed me the most in terms of character design – Elrond and Gelebrimbor:
Tumblr media
Elrond's character design had already been released before, so it's not much of a surprise. However, the image strengthened my belief that I just can't get used to the character design. For Celebrimbor I feared the worst, and unfortunately these fears were confirmed.
Neither Elrond nor Celebrimbor look anything like I imagined these characters to look, and based on the reactions I have seen many fans share the sentiment.
Both with unusual short hair, and Elrond seems too young while Celebrimbor is too old. Elves are supposed to look ageless, and after a little while you won't see much difference between them anymore. Peter Jackson's movies did that right: Legolas and his father Thranduil basically look the same, age-wise. The same goes for Arwen and her grandmother Galadriel.
Not so this show: for someone being at least about a thousand years old (as confirmed by the Empire Magazine article), Elrond looks way too young – something caused by the weirdly modern character design because the actor would otherwise have the right age. Celebrimbor on the other hand looks older than any ageless Elf should look, and nothing about him resembles even closely the image of a famous smith and craftsman.
Both character designs lack the inherent beauty that the Elves should have in general. There may be a statement in this somewhere about beauty, but if the show's creators don't want to depict Elves as beautiful, maybe they should have picked a different series altogether. This beauty is simply a prominent feature of the Elves when compared to Mankind.
To summarize my rant: Elrond and Celebrimbor are two very important characters in the history of Middle-earth, and in my eyes the show butchered their casting and character designs completely.
So, what about Gil-galad?
Tumblr media
Oh, where to begin? Many fans seem happy about this character design. Unfortunately, I'm not.
It starts with all the gold: Gil-galad is famously associated with silver as his heraldic device shows silver stars on blue. Then there is the golden wreath: the wreath itself looks crude and lacks any Elvish elegance or finesse, and reminds me way too much of Caesar. It also looks uninspired and makes me miss Thranduil's leaf crown from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit.
Truth to be told: I'm not happy about the casting either. In this image, I don't see the last High King of the Noldor, I rather see a friendly but naive neighbor questioning his Caesar cosplay in the mirror.
The article writes:
"Also different is Gil-Galad, the last High King Of The Ñoldor in later years, slightly less sure on his feet as this less-seasoned Second Age ruler."
What later years? Gil-galad has had the time to be High King of the Ñoldor for at least thousand years, and he has lived through the First Age. With Elendil already in the picture at this time, there aren't many more seasons he'll get!
Tumblr media
Another still with beautiful lightning – however, the details are once again frustrating. The weird golden wreaths are repeated here, and especially with the short haired Elves this looks even more like a meeting of Caesar cosplayers now. Then there is the dumb idea to dress these characters in long wide robes with even longer capes, only to add plate armour on top of it. What are they supposed to do like this? At best this is purely ceremonial, because this is neither pleasent to wear nor is it practical to fight in. I can't stop scratching my head because it doesn't make any sense to me.
Tumblr media
In this image now, I like the atmosphere. The forst with the golden lamps, it looks beautiful. I just wish we could edit out the characters in it, because it reminds me once again how disappointing the character designs of Elrond and Celebrimbor turned out to be, and how Benjamin Walker doesn't seem kingly to me at all in what we have seen so far. In addition: why are some of the female Elves in the corners veiled?
Tumblr media
To end on a positive note: you can hardly go wrong with landscape stills.
In summary: most of the character designs are disappointing for me, and the majority of the actors seem miscast so far. This is not to slight the actors – I'm sure they are good actors and will do their best, but I based on what I've seen so far I don't think they fit Tolkien's characters as I imagine them. Of course everyone will have their own version in their heads, but I think from what we see they don't seem to fit what little we have of the characters' descriptions from Tolkien, either.
Overall, the style and the atmosphere just don't feel like Middle-earth so far. They made the point often enough: they don't want to copy the movies in order to avoid being compared to them. Well, they are still being compared with them – simply because the movies, in a way, managed to capture a feeling that felt like the world Tolkien was describing in his work, while the Amazon series tries to update the show with modern looks, fantasy-atypical elements and and overall to strong emphasis on look-we-are-doing-our-own-thing. Bringing new ideas to the table is fine. However, subverting so many expecations in such a huge way may not be a good strategy. Game of Thrones had to learn that about their series final season plot. Maybe Amazon's The Rings of Power has to learn this about the series' design – but based on their interviews it's doubtful they ever listened.

Tolkien's story telling and Amazon's The Rings of Power
Having seen the trailer for Amazon's Middle-earth series, I won't lie: some parts look good in it. Especially the landscape is fantastic, some of the sets look good, and there are some decent effects in there.
However, it still leaves me wondering both about the atmosphere and the direction of the show.
There are, to these stories, two different emotions, as Tolkien put it: "the heart-racking sense of the vanished past" and "the more 'ordinary' emotion, triumph, pathos, tragedy of the characters".
I want to talk about both in regards to the show.
Distant trees and near trees
The Vanished Past
Tumblr media
"I think you are moved by Celebrimbor because it conveys a sudden sense of endless untold stories: mountains seen far away, never to be climbed, distant trees never to be approached – or if so only to become 'near trees'." – J.R.R. Tolkien
Tolkien's description about getting close to an untold story is quite fitting: there is always the danger of turning something fascinating into something mundane.
He was a master of invoking that sense of a vanished past, and it's especially visible in The Lord of the Rings: for example Gandalf's words about the Palantir and Fëanor, or Aragorn telling the Hobbits about Beren and Lúthien, or Elrond remembering the Last Alliance.
But it's in his other writings as well: I feel that's one of the reasons why they have authors, why their tradition inside the universe is known, and one of the reasons why Tolkien uses frame stories. One of my favourite bits of his writings comes The Book of Lost Tales, the ending of The Fall of Gondolin:
Tumblr media
"Then said Littleheart son of Bronweg: 'Alas for Gondolin.'
And no one in all the Room of Logs spake or moved for a great
while." – J.R.R. Tolkien
This little bit makes the whole tale even more emotional for me than it would ever be without it, and it's difficult to put into words why.
Traveling into history
And that, in my eyes, is the challenge of any series that tackles something like the Second Age or – even more difficult – shows parts of the First Age. They can't just turn these distant trees into near trees without a thought. For me at least this is what any visual material needs to try: it needs to try to keep some parts of the grandeur of the past legends. Tolkien excelled at it. Some artists are able to depict it in their work as well. Peter Jackson's movies managed to hit that emotion on rare occation.
Amazon's Middle-earth series? So far it does a good job in conveying this mood with wide shots of landscapes and architecture. However, based on the promo material it has release so far, there is no indication that this important atmosphere is achieved in their characters.
Certainly the invented Haarfoots can't achieve that, and characters like Halbrand or Arondir aren't predestined for it either. But the characters that could be this way among the Númenoreans and Elves – they don't give that impression either.
Tumblr media
Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, the proudest and most powerful of all the Kings of any human empire in Middle-earth, is already an old men when we meet him in Amazon's Middle-earth show.
Some of these characters seem to be larger-than-life in Tolkien's writings, and they can be, because they're not average humans. The princes, kings and queens among the Eldar and the Númenoreans are supposed to be impressive – both in their monstrosity and their greatness. This applies to characters like Gil-galad, Celebrimbor, Finrod and Galadriel, and yes, to characters like Ar-Pharazôn as well.
We haven't seen much of them yet in the trailer footage and the promotion images. However, what we have seen so far makes me believe that the show won't be able to show this quality of Tolkien's writing in any convincing way – judging by the character designs it didn't even try. With characters like these, the show should have gone for extra, and I don't think they did.
Tumblr media
Celebrimbor, grandson of Fëanor and creator of the Three Rings, who would later fight Sauron in person when defending the house of the Mírdain, looks utterly unimpressive in Amazon's Middle-earth show.
23 character posters for 8 episodes
"A story must be told or there'll be no story." – J.R.R. Tolkien
Another part that Tolkien adressed is the idea of story and the "triumph, pathos, tragedy" of the characters. And that's what my other main criticism of the trailer is about:
The trailer has failed to make me care about any of these people – and that is saying a lot, given the fact that I care a lot about these characters in Tolkien's writings.
I've gone back to trailers for series like The Witcher, Carnival Row, and Shadow and Bones. The ones that leave an impression on me are those that show me the promise of actual characters: the hint of an emotional conflict, the chance for an emotional connection with the character. Any good movie or series that can catch my attention and my heart has character stories at its core.
Since Tolkien barely wrote detailed stories for the Second Age that are "enough" for the screen, this is something the show writers have to deliver by themselves – and it would be too early to claim that they can't do it. However, the promotion so far is not encouraging:
Tumblr media
There have been 23 character posters published when the series started its promotion These 23 major characters all have to share the screen time of 8 episodes, of which 2 will be an 'introduction' of sorts. That is not much time to do any of these characters justice – a problem that is not unique to this show by the way, many of the streaming shows these days that only allow for about 8 episodes a season struggle with this.
The other less-than-encouraging thing in the trailer is that it gives barely any clues about the characters themselves or what their story will be about: they all have a vast interest in the comet, they sense some vague darkness, and they have some generic lines like "the enemy is still out there" and "the past is dead" and "this could be the beginning of a new era". At best, Elrond's and Galadriel's discussion could be seen as a character moment, but neither dialogue nor acting is impressive, and the weird choices for Elrond's character design are still way too distracting.
The potential is certainly there in theory, according to various articles and interviews. But that's just that: promotional interviews that say little about the actual product in the end. Does anyone remember what all the actors of the dwarves in The Hobbit had to say about their characters? They had thoughts about their characters and their backstories and all, but for most of them all that didn't make it on screen and the characters were still barely refined for the viewer at the end of the story. I hope for this show's sake that they'll be better than that...
Long story short
To put an end to these rambling thoughts: I've seen legendary characters well done in media, and I have seen character work in general done well in media.
However, I don't trust this show to do to these very important things right, both in regards to story telling in general and story telling in Middle-earth. I don't trust them to get the atmosphere and mood right for Tolkien's legendary characters, and I don't trust them to make me care for these characters individually.
So while the trailer looks pretty, I still think it's mostly empty.

My rings of power midpoint review:
Initially I liked it, the sets and visuals were good and there was some potential, but 4 episodes in I don't even know what's going on. Why is nothing clear? It feels like everything is just a hint and a mystery so that people will speculate on social media. It is a story that was written years ago so we are supposed to know what happens but the timeline has been so screwed up that none of it makes sense. I referred to Tolkien and all the numenor stuff is such a mess. Al pharazon was king in SA3000+ and this is set in the beginning of the second age so why is he there? Miriel was around the same time, isildur shouldn't be there for ages and don't get me started on galadriel's whole thing. We know that sauron is around so why not just establish the character instead of trying to trick people into speculating who he could be?
The writing is shocking, the acting is possibly worse. Why not get some classic actors in there? Where exactly did the biggest TV show budget of all time get spent?? Why don't the elves seem in any way ethereal?!
They claimed they weren't making a TV show but a 'new viewing experience', if they actually wanted to do that why not create a 8 hour film perfectly choreographed and then chop it up into episodes. It's already slow so do it properly and let it build. They have thrown every character and storyline at the wall and rushed it all so much that you don't care about what happens or understand how it all links. It is literally a worse made and written version of game of thrones in every aspect, the title sequence is boring and there is no action, just poor dialogue.
Tolkien had some incredible values woven into his work and such unique and high level themes, and none of them are apparent. Oh, arondir said a few words to a tree before chopping it down, theyre referencing Tolkiens respect for nature! Great, why not actually centre the show around the themes of the books instead of chuck one reference in and then job done. It's like no one making this actually thought about what they should be bringing to the table. Elves are beautiful and wise and beyond any perfection we could imagine, but let's just put some ears on a bloke and say he's an elf. Let's make galadriel, one of the most wise and respected beings in middle earth, hateful and wreckless and tactless and lets give her the most thirsty wig imaginable. Her hair is literally one of the greatest beauties of middle earth but we dont need to worry about that detail. Uuuggghhhh.
Every aspect is like that; just a total squandering of potential. Galadriel is known for being tall, so why is halbrand taller than her? Please god directors just put her on a box or something, please just think for a second about the details!!! Make the characters do cool stuff, give us some actual lore that we have been waiting years to see.
Oh man and the harfoots and their Irish accents. Please hire some Irish actors. Why are they all Irish anyway? Do they start off primitive and Irish and then as they become civilised they turn west country? They are all ethnically different, a mix of white, black, asian etc etc but they all speak with the same accent? Make it make sense Amazon.
I could go on for days but who has the time. I'm bored, disappointed and can't get that fucking image of galadriel on the horse out of my brain.

Some last minute thoughts and wishes before episode 7 comes and become the game changer that will ruin all theories.
I don't know if i lost for good my theory that the Stranger was Sauron because episode 5 ruined it almost completely but not totally.
I guess he wasn't wrong to wake up grumpy (and to kill few fireflies or bend the trees and make the land tremble in the process) after being sent like a meteorit to the other side of Midde Earth, and after ending with half of his brain so fried that he couldn't remember his name and even started eating paper.
So let's say he's an istari, possibly even Gandalf or Saroumane, asked to carry the mission to help the side of the elves and humans to form an alliance against Sauron, how did the Valar know that Sauron was going to make his move even though he was hiding under a different form all this time and acting like a deceiver? Even the eruption of Mount Doom wasn't his work unless Adar lied and he is Sauron.
Did they really sent a powerful maia for one moriondor and hundred orcs that an army of 500 Nùmenoreans has beat easily? If it wasn't for the hilt, Adar would have been completely defeated.
Did they foresee that the hilt will be discover and chaos will ensue? Then why not sent their messenger directly to the Southlands to retrieve it before the dark forces could put their hands on it? And why sent him in this miserable state? Has he been attacked during his trip by the Mystics and is it the reason of his amnesia? Was he forced to change his destination? Is the fire without a heat felt by Nori just a maia thing, shared by Sauron in Morgoth's lair?
In all cases, if this theory is crushed, it won't be my biggest regret because i wanted it to be true only for Nori's character development and the fact that she was never be exposed to corruption and deceit before him. It would have been too a good explanation of why Sauron doesnt' take the Hobbits seriously.
My biggest regret would be, after rereading all those old arguments i wrote and left in my drafts, for my other favourite theory to not be true either: Arondir as Sauron.
I don't have the time and the space to explain all my reasons but damn if he wouldn't have been the best Sauron!
I mean physically, intellectually and strategically (well except for the way he has hidden the hilt), he's so superior to everyone surrounding him, including the other elves of his company.
I've rewatched since few hours all his scenes and few facts surprised me: like he's been in every episode of season 1. The only other character with Galadriel to have been constantly on screen, and sometimes even when the the Southlanders were absent (episode 3 Adar), though he didn't have the same number of scenes as Galadriel of course.
The thought of Arondir being more than he seems hit me again while watching him defending alone Ostirith. It struck me that his speed, strength, and agility were on a level i've never seen any elf shown before, except Galadriel (when she killed the troll) As an elf, of course, he's gifted with many supernatural abilities: piercing sight as confirmed by Galadriel during her talk with Isildur, and piercing hearing as showed by Elrond when he spied on Durin and Disa, but Arondir has always been different: he has always dominated everyone else, in every way. A true image of grace and balance, of perfection even during fights. Something i imagine that Sauron would want to project, as being himself obsessed by Order and Control.
It's hard to deny that he's beautiful as a fallen angel should be and the casting magnificently reflects that. It's not a shallow comment: everything about Ismael Cruz Cordova's look conveys the idea there's something surnatural about his appearance even for an elf: from the natural elegance of his movement to his gorgeous skin color. In return he's attracted by beauty: by the human fragile beauty of Bronwyn, by the wild beauty of The Southlands. He said to Bronwyn: "beauty has a great power to heal the soul" and that's how i imagine that Sauron would have tried to heal his soul from his past actions as the "beautiful servant": immersing himself in the beauty.
He didn't want to leave the Mordor Southlands with his company. a place that combines beauty (it has recovered from the destruction of war) and darkness (their inhabitants are still the descendent of the men who are linked by a blood oath to Morgoth). Arondir has always assumed the fact that he was drawn to this land and its inhabitants, which makes perfect sense if he's Sauron considering his connection to Orodruin.
In episode 1, he went alone in the tunnels which shows an incredible confidence in his ability to survive, and surprisingly almost no fear, not even after he saw the devastation inflicted on the village of Haldern.
He never sent for help from the other elves (it's strange that nobody reacted in Lindon to this garrison that never came back home, despite the king's order to disband the outpost).
In episode 3, he fought and reacted with a precision that is mindblowing and that no other elf of his company showed (not even the watchwarden): during the escape attempt, he was the only one bold enough to take an axe and destroy the tent that was hiding the orcs from the sun, strong enough to chain the warg alone, restrained it alone and killed it alone (in a spectacular move). This scene is only surpassed by his fight with the giant orc in episode 6.
In episode 4, after he was freed by Adar and returned to the village, he sliced an orc (using Galadriel's technique shown in episode 5) as if he had done that all his life, while he was supposed to have never seen one before. He said to the watchwarden that he was a sower before his assignment to the Southlands, but the region was supposed to be in peace since the defeat of Morgoth and the escape of Sauron (Adar said that Sauron had gathered all the last evil forces and lead them to the extreme north).
And later in the forest when Theo and him were pursued by the orcs, the way he avoided and caught an arrow with his bare hand and sent it back, killing the orc he targeted all while never stopping, was incredible.
But it's in episode 6 that the clues seem the most significative: one of them was when Adar was inside Ostirith tower before its fall, and Waldreg and an orc came at the same time to talk to him. The dialogues were a strange merger between these two discussions as if they were about the same person, whereas the orc was talking about Arondir while Waldreg was talking about Sauron:
Waldreg: Meaning no offense, Lord-father, but where is he? What happened to Sauron?
The Orc: Can't find tooth nor tail of him. Must've got smart and scarpered.
Adar: No. The Elf's here. I smell him.
And like i said, he destroyed alone the watchtower, plus his fight with the giant orc in the village was spectacular in every way.
I like him too as Sauron, because i like the parallels he had with Adar: the connection through the seeds, the promise of a new Eden/life made to Bronwyn after the battle while Adar promised a home to his orcs, their past meetings in which they didn't try to kill each other while having every reason to do so, the idea that instead the writers opted for a game between the two dark leaders: Arondir/Sauron trying to stop Adar to find the sword hilt and using the men of Bronwyn's village to fight for him again, unknown to them, and slow down Adar.
Not every details matches this theory of course: he was shown as being in love with Bronwyn though he never said the words, but can Sauron love or does he only fake it? He did a bad job with the hilt from his failure at hiding it to his inability to recognize it had been replaced by an axe, but did he really want to stop Adar at the end? Or was he pissed off that Halbrand was "crowned" in front of him (the camera focused on Galadriel and him in this moment: he seemed surprised/shocked by this sudden action, while Galadriel was cheering Halbrand, waiting for him to say yes when he was asked by Bronwyn if he was the king promised)? If so, it would explain why he didn''t check the hilt Galadriel gave him: Arondir was shown trying to destroy it for few long minutes before the battle. Even as a simple elf, he had very good eyes to notice details and would have recognized the difference in the weight and form with the axe, under the burlap in which it was wrapped. And if he was Sauron, he had every reason to say nothing: he wanted the land for himself and so he abandoned his attempt to stop Adar, who became conveniently the new Sauron, a fake one, but enough convincing to be shipped to Nùmenor while Arondir heads to Eregion.
I wish it was the case because there was never on the show a character as charismatic and powerful (except the Stranger), as good in term of characterization, certainly not Halbrand, to play the part of Sauron.

Arondir, honey, if you were born in Beleriand then WHY ARE YOU SPEAKING QUENYA
at least if last week’s subtitles were correct; didn’t use subtitles this week but pretty sure that was a Quenya pronoun I heard in the dialogue
yeah yeah handwaving that after the fall of Doriath and the remaining elves apparently accepting Noldorin overlords, maybe Quenya might’ve been privileged as the language of the ruling class but but but
(sudden image of Ëarendil and Elwing first meeting in complete mutual unintelligibility between Gondolinian Quenya and Doriathic Sindarin)

Chapter 3 - Will You Go?
( Also available on AO3)
He didn’t like to keep secrets from Bronwyn. And he wouldn’t for much longer, he’d tell her this very evening. At least, that’s what he kept telling himself for nearly a fortnight.
The letter was still tucked in his pocket, as though secretively hidden away, but he told himself it was just for safekeeping. It burned against his leg, even now as he sparred with Hádred. His attacks and defenses were both slower than usual, and had been for days. Control your mind! He told himself, just before he was knocked to his knees with a blade at his throat.
“That’s twice today!” Hádred said, as he stuck a hand out to Arondir.
Arondir nodded and took the man’s hand, though he could not bring himself to return the smile. Being bested did not bother him, there was only on thing he could think about. Consuming him.
“Well fought.” He said with a nod, then turned and walked away from the sparring field. The others would continue their training, but he could not. He thought for a moment to turn to the cottage and take on some of the midday tasks, but just when he thought he’d decided to do so, instead he turned away from the village altogether and began to walk.
There was no path, but he knew the way. The hills were made of rocks and craggy trees. Here and there was a copse of trees, but most of the forest sat on the edges of his view, all around them. Locusts sang in the summer heat, their buzz bringing him back through every summer he’d spent in the southlands.
It had been just after summer when he and Bronwyn had first laid eyes on this little valley. And not much longer after that when they’d first discovered this little hidden gem. He stepped through a line of trees, and stopped. The sound of rushing water had been present, but didn’t fully envelop him until he could see it. A waterfall was set here on the hill, running down into a stream that whipped away, always rushing down through the trees.
A rock plateau stretched out between the trees on either side, the water cutting a groove through the center. He stepped forward and sat beside the stream, close enough that a mist from the waterfall fell on him like rain.
There had been so much laughter that first day, when they’d tried to climb up to the top of the waterfall and Bronwyn had slipped and ended up soaking wet. Then she’d splashed him for laughing at her and tried to pull him in after her. She wasn’t nearly strong enough to pull him down – blame the elf in him and the wound that she’d gotten only a month or so prior – but he’d let himself fall into the water anyway.
They both laughed, the absurdity of the moment a delightful diversion from the traumas they’d all experienced so recently and the uncertainty of the future. He wasn’t one to laugh often, but she made him want to.
He looked up now, the sunlight glinting off of the water as it flowed, highlighting all the individual droplets that broke away from the mass.
The letter.
His hand instinctively moved to rest on his hip. It was still there, he knew. He’d hoped, for just a single irrational moment, that it was not, and was just a fear he’d conjured. But no, there it was, as always. The orders he was meant to obey.
“Bad day to be an elf.”
He turned his head to find Theo stepping through the trees to stand beside him. His heart jumped to his throat, and he looked back at the rushing water. Theo could not have known how true such a statement was.
The boy flopped himself to sit just to Arondir’s right, and followed his gaze to the stream.
“Took the losses that hard?”
Arondir chuckled, but considered for a long moment whether to go along with the assumption or not. It would only require a minor hit to his self-image, and a little bit of exaggeration to sell the farce.
“Bad day to be an elf, indeed.” He raised a knee and rested his arm on it. “How do the humans fare?”
“Improved, I think.” Theo said, then he shrugged, and leaned forward to put his hand in the water. Arondir nodded his head as though pointing from Theo’s hand up to the top of the falls.
“Will winter come early this year, do you think, or shall summer hold on a bit longer?”
Theo pulled his hand from the stream and shook it.
“From... the water? You can tell that from the water?”
Arondir smiled and looked up at the top of the waterfall, the peak a blinding white in the sun. The water rushed, and rushed, never to stop.
“In Valinor, the water speaks all things. So it is said.” He looked back down to Theo and acquiesced.
“But here... no. I cannot do so. At least, not always.”
He stood then, and held out a hand to help Theo back to his feet as well. The fatigue hit him suddenly – he hadn’t realized just how tired and sore he was. Nor how late it had gotten.
“Come, your mother will be looking for us.”
Theo left Arondir when they’d nearly reached the village, seeking out a friend before the evening meal. There was still an hour or so before supper, so he just continued alone to the cottage.
Bronwyn was just heading inside when he arrived, a pile of freshly cut herbs in her apron. Wisps of hair blew around her face as she lit up into a smile. He accompanied her into the house, and sat to separate the herb cuts when she dumped them onto the table.
“How was sparring?” She asked, in a tone that made him think she already knew the answer. He smiled.
“Some might think I’m losing my touch.”
“ You ?” Bronwyn said, far too gleefully.
“Mmm.” He responded, choosing to focus on his hands separating the herbs, one at a time. They were both silent for a few minutes, then Bronwyn spoke.
“There is something that bothers you.”
He looked up, deep into her concerned eyes. He sighed.
“Yes. Not...” he chuckled, “not the sparring.”
“Well, then,” Bronwyn moved over to the table and began gathering a few leaves from each pile, “tell me.”
He didn’t speak for another minute, trying to decide on how to start, how to say... anything. Finally, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the letter. He held it out and she took it.
She opened it and stared for a few seconds, then looked up at him.
“It’s in Elvish.”
He nodded, then realized what a fool he’d been, yet again.
“You can’t read it?” He spoke it as a question, but did not need to. Bronwyn snorted a laugh.
“Of course not. Not much need for Elvish in these parts.”
She set the letter on the table and moved back to the pot simmering above the fire.
“So,” she said, nodding her head toward the letter before leaning to stir the stew. “What does it say?”
He took a breath. He’d have to say it after all.
“It’s.... a request. A demand, really. To go to Lindon and provide my account of the dark powers arising in the south. Perhaps to stay, for some time. Elven... time.”
She’d stopped stirring the pot and just sat against her heels, staring deeply into the floorboards. They both understood the value of silence, and he simply waited, letting her mull over the predicament. At long last, she looked up, her eyes boring deep into his soul.
“And you?” She said, her voice calm and measured. “Will you go?”

First look at Orcs from Amazon's Rings of Power, from the IGN article I posted earlier. They wanted their Orcs to be similar but different, as it's a different time and situation than what most people are familiar with (Orcs in the Third Age in Peter Jackson's films). Here it's the Second Age, and at the end of the First Age there was a battle called The War of Wrath, that basically involved the "Gods" (the Valar--more like the Creator Eru's most powerful Angels) coming to Middle-earth to kick the shit out of Morgoth, lol. And he was Very deserving of that! Think Sauron (who was a lieutenant of Morgoth's) times like at least a thousand. ALL of Middle-earth was Morgoth's "ring," as his poison and perversions are in virtually everything. Anyway, point being that after this terrible decades long battle, with a large part of Middle-earth being basically destroyed and sunk beneath the ocean, most peoples thought that evil had pretty much been destroyed. The Orcs were nearly wiped out. But some survived. The show's creators put a good deal of thought into this, into How they survived, and what they did/what kind of shape they are in. So the thinking is that they hid underground and were widely scattered. And likely that they were mostly scavengers, thus the images of piecemeal/spotty armor, probably cobbled together from what they could find. They're not as muscley either, having just been subsisting. They're still a good ways away from the Orc armies that will emerge in time. And the thinking is that before Sauron gathers them as a force, there is another who starts to get them to band together, and that this mysterious figure is likely Adar, a series original, whose name it has been said earlier means "All Father" to the Orcs. Promising stuff, to my mind, and these creatures look awesome, in my opinion!
Oh! And there are Lady Orcs, ha! One of the people from the show said one in particular is a favorite of hers--and that she is very tall and strong, and battles a prominent Elf character. The thinking is that this may well be Arondir, a Woodland Elf and another series original, who appears (in some previously released material) to have been captured by the Orcs, but then escapes. He's also the one who grabs an arrow shot at or near him out of its midair flight, and turns it on whoever shot it.

Reworking: Bronwyn
So I am really into her and Arondir's relationship. It's very complex not only in terms of their races (elf and human), but also the fact Bronwyn is a widow with a child-- Theo. It's like mom has a new boyfriend, but the child does not approve. (Yeah really reflecting some realities here... Soo can we also talk about how normal people, with no magic, surivived a pyroclastic cloud from a violent volcano eruption? Nope. Never happened in this story- because if it did they all be dead.)

Browyn was born in the southern-lands of middle earth. She was married off at a young age to a wealthy family's son. Even if it was arranged her husband treated her well, and she bore him a child named Theo. Though Theo would grow up without a father because he had been killed by orcs when they suddenly raided their village.
Bronwyn was able to escape with her son in towe. Though the events of that night forever scared her.
She despises orcs and does what she can to help her people. She is just a widow now though her strength and tenacity inspires others to follow her in dark times. She is their light and hope. So long as they stick too and look out for one another they will make it through.
They come to a new home and meet up with another group whom had also been attacked. They rebuild, and create a new kingdom in the southernlands. Though it is not official reconized, yet. They do not have a king but a concil that was voted on my the people. Bronwyn was elected to be one of these people and has a seat in the concil. They do live near the woodland realm and had some interactions with the wood elves. Whom provided them aid and help to build. In exchange the people must respect and treat their lands and nature with respect.
The people were taught how to replant the trees they take. Say prayers and blessings onto the land and earth that provides to them. Take only what they needed, used everything and no more no less.
...
When Iseldur and Elendil arrive to establish a kingdom in the land of Gondor (Minas ithil). Bronwyn and some of the other villagers would move to there.
...
Bronwyn also tells Theo a well known story of a man (A great King) who fell inlove with an elf (to hopefully help him understand and accept why she and Arondir are together now- and though rare it can still happen.

Just a quick point: the armor that Galadriel wears in ep5&6 is different than the armor from ep1, so the new armor was made in Numenor, it's not the same. (do a quick google search of 'Galadriel Valinor Armor' to see the difference)
I checked and yeah, you're right. I guess I've mandela'd myself since there's been so much promotional images of Galadriel in her Númenor armor
Still, the design reminds me a lot of Burton's Alice in Wonderland just less shiny, it looks uncomfortable and like it barely fits her, and for it to be specifically made for her by Númenor outside of their more fish-scale designs especially compared to Arondir's leaf-like armor, which is much better designed, feels like a disservice. Sure, you have the star in the middle but in a way the armor is a depiction of everything I'm not liking about Galadriel; it is a misfit and forced show-only creation which tries too hard to appear different to others to the point that it doesn't feel like it belongs.

Vlog - La suite #3

Ceci concerne mes divers streams à venir.
