Whump Recommendation: Whiplash (2014)
whumpee: Andrew Neiman (played by Miles Teller)
My thoughts: Whiplash is an INSANE movie. I was deeply intrigued by the fast-paced plot, dark New York City ambience, and dynamic between the film’s two main characters: a college student inspired to be the next big jazz drummer and his verbally abusive professor (played by JK Simmons). The movie was very enjoyable and had my jaw on the floor throughout the majority of it, so the unexpected whump cemented it as one of my favorites :)
Whump includes:
Manipulation and deeply personal verbal abuse, resulting in crying numerous times, and one instance of being ridiculed for crying
Slapped repeatedly by abuser
Constantly bandaged hands and fingers
Bleeding through bandages
Continuing to aggravate wounds while visibly in pain (this is a pretty major plot point)
Overexertion
Bleeding from head and face
Using hands with broken and bloodied fingers
Betrayal, frustration, and other emotional whump throughout
My favorite whump scene:
MAJOR SPOILERS (as this is the climax and turning point of the whole movie. I did my best to vaguely include the injuries in the whump list)
Whumpee is rushing to drive to a competition and gets t-boned by a truck, resulting in a bleeding head and face and injured hands, which were already wounded before the accident. He manages to get to the competition on time, enters the stage covered in blood, and plays the drums while in visible agony, dropping his sticks multiple times due to what is later implied to be broken fingers (seen in splints).

Whump Recommendation: Brick (2006)
whumpee: Brendan Frye (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
My thoughts: Brick is an incredible film noir following a teenage loner trying to solve the murder of his ex-girlfriend. The dark comedy, beautiful cinematography, complex rapid-fire dialogue, general edginess, and well-rounded classic archetypes all make for a very intriguing and unique story. Though not for everyone, Brick’s unraveling plot and moody tone will remain in your head for days.
Whump includes:
NUMEROUS beatings and fights, bloodied face for the majority of the movie (pictured)
Knocked unconscious several times
Sleep deprivation
A worsening sickness due to whumpee’s mental state, sleep deprivation, concussion, and swallowing blood from beatings. His coughing gets worse over the course of the movie and causes him to collapse or pass out several times
Knifed in arm
Emotional whump, crying, betrayal
My favorite whump scene: whumpee is trying to recover in bed from his sickness, injuries, and sleep deprivation when someone disturbs him. She comforts him despite his stubbornness, and he eventually breaks down, allows himself to be vulnerable for the first time, and cries in her arms.

Whump Recommendation: Point Break (1991)
whumpee: Agent Johnny Utah (played by Keanu Reeves)
My thoughts: This movie is one of the most adrenaline fueled, crazy, far-fetched, quintessential American action movies I’ve ever seen. Featuring California surfers, undercover agents, bank robbery, and my personal favorite, young Keanu Reeves, Point Break is too fun to not be enjoyable. Even with all the thrills and general absurdity, the movie still manages to be very sensitive and smart with the underlying message that one must let go of all rules and conventions to really feel alive, but be prepared to face the consequences of going too far.
Whump includes:
Multiple fistfights, strangulation, and a bruised and bloodied face
An old knee injury that gets re-injured during a rough foot chase (gifset) and frequently prevents whumpee from catching the antagonist, visible limping, wincing, and screaming in pain/frustration
A gunshot to a bulletproof vest and gasping in pain
Being knocked unconscious and bleeding from the head
Attempted drowning
Mild emotional whump throughout
My favorite whump scene: whumpee and his love interest have an argument and she runs off. Whumpee attempts to get out of bed and chase after her, but he cries out in pain when trying to put weight on his injured knee and falls to the ground, where he calls after her while writhing in pain

⚠️MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE BATMAN⚠️
Overall, The Batman didn’t have that much whump but the little it had was very aesthetically pleasing. The movie itself is phenomenal and worth a watch, especially for the heavily emo vibes and a brooding, tortured robert pattinson in eyeliner.
Whump scenes included:
- bloodied knuckles + bandaged hands
- lots of scars
- a painful crash landing + a brief limp
- numerous rough fight scenes (no aftermath)
-caught in an explosion and briefly unconscious
- a point-blank gunshot to the ribs that keeps him out of commission until he drugs himself (video below)
- and PLENTY of emotional whump.

The John Wick movies just scratch an itch in the whump part of my brain. This guy takes beating after beating and keeps getting shit done. If you like movies with:
- constant whump, including bullet wounds, knife wounds, bruises, bloodied face and knuckles, broken ribs, etc
- the “patching up own injuries” trope
- the “fighting while injured” trope
- nonstop action
- a decent amount of humor
- a very likable, stoic (but soft on the inside) whumpee who is mostly just Sick Of It
- an ugly-sexy guy in a suit
definitely check them out. Really cool movies aside from the whump too I’m so mad I put off watching them for so long

I’m just curious, why are you so interested in whumping? I stumbled upon this blog by chance and i don’t get it, but I’d like to understand why people are interested in it
Hi there! Welcome! It’s okay if you don’t get it. Whump isn’t for everyone but I applaud you for asking kindly and being willing to learn. And that’s a very good question. One we as a community often ask ourselves and we honestly have yet to find a solid answer.
There are a lot of different reasons why we are interested in whump and they vary from person to person. Some of the reasons we’ve discuss as a community are:
We enjoy seeing people go through difficult times, either physically or emotionally, and recover from it, receive love and comfort from friends and family. Maybe we don’t always get that in our own lives so we love seeing our favorite fictional characters get it. Live through them. It’s why comfort is such a big part of whump as well. We love the comfort part of whump.
Maybe the characters we love seeing whumped are similar to ourselves and we enjoy seeing their pain validated and seeing them recover from it. It gives us hope that we can recover and our pain will be validated. That someone will see our pain and help us.
It gives a lot of us an outlet to work through our own traumas. Maybe we had a terrible childhood or have gone through something traumatic and whump is a way for us to work through it.
It’s a safe place to explore painful, traumatic, taboo things. Whump and dark things have been a subject for fiction for centuries. People have always been interested in these kinds of subjects and we are no different. They’re interesting subjects and we like to explore them.
I’ve seen a theory that we like whump because we’re empathetic people and pain gives you endorphins so we get an endorphin rush from seeing fictional characters in pain because we’re empathetic.
We like seeing characters be vulnerable and overcome adversity. To go through something difficult and come out the other side. It makes for good storytelling and brings depth to characters.
For some people, it’s a sexual thing. That’s perfectly fine and a completely valid reason to like whump.
A lot of us are asexual too and I think whump gives us similar feelings to arousal without it being sexual. (at least for me it does)
Heck, some of us are sadists. That’s fine too.
Personally, I think some actors just look good like aesthetically when they’re bleeding or bruises. 🤷‍♀️
This is one of my personal reason that I haven’t really seen discussed but it’s definitely a reason I like whump. Essentially, I struggle with recognizing emotions both in myself and within other people. Always have. Whump allows me to explore and learn about different emotional reactions which helps me recognize those emotions in my loved ones and in myself.
We enjoy the character dynamics that come from whump. The whumpee and the caretaker for instance. Or the whumper and the whumpee.
But honestly none of us really know? These are all just theories we’ve discussed amongst the community. All we know for sure is that we get good feelings when our favorite fictional characters are in pain. There’s just something about whump that makes us feel good. What it is exactly is hard to pin down and changes from person to person (some enjoy emotional over physical. some like hard torture and others don’t. we’re all different) but we all get what we call “whumperflies” when we see/read good whump. It’s a physical sensation that manifests itself in different ways. For most of us it feels like butterflies in the stomach (hence the name) and it feels good. We like that feeling. And we get that feeling from whump. So we like whump.
You’d think this community, being full of people who like seeing fictional characters in pain, would be cruel or terrible people but this community is full of the nicest people you will ever interact with. I think it correlates with our love of whump. I think we’re all so nice because we understand pain and suffering and don’t want anyone to feel hurt in real life.
I hope this answers your question nonny!! If you want to learn anything else, have any other questions, or wanna explore it some more you are more than welcome! We’re a super nice community and all are welcome here :D

Here are my 3 favorite whumpy animated shows that have a 10/10 plot for all my other picky whumpers out there
Cowboy bebop- my favorite show. released in the 90s, cowboy bebop is an incredibly cool and fun story about a scrappy handful of bounty hunters in space with a mind-blowing underlying plot. the mc very often ends up with gunshot wounds, broken ribs, stab wounds, and even a full body cast at one point.
Tumblr media
Samurai champloo- very similar to cowboy bebop and from the same director. the whump is a little less frequent but the quality of it as well as the entertaining plot make up for it. LOTS of sword whump, some emotional whump, and a happy ending. (my banner is a scene from this show)
Tumblr media
Invincible- dear god is this show gory. if you’re a fan of gruesome hurt with little comfort, I highly recommend it. the mc is your typical hero, complete with witty quips and a desire to succeed. but his whole persona is based on being able to take a beating, often landing him with broken bones, stab wounds, holes blown through his body, and enough trauma and daddy issues to last a lifetime

Alright I made an intro post a while ago and then never posted anything lmao so let’s try this again. Hi! I’m MJ (you can call me Jay) and I use any pronouns. I’m a minor so I won’t post anything NSFW but here are some things about me that you’ll probably see on my blog :)
Fandoms I’m interested in: cowboy bebop (my fav), mha, samurai champloo, demon slayer, fmab, megalobox, devilman crybaby, opm, invincible, marvel, DC, and star wars
Tropes I like: defiant whumpee, combat injuries, found family, hero x villain, hiding injuries, fainting, broken limbs/ribs, stab wounds, etc
Tropes I’m not a fan of: sickfics, death, pet whump, animal whump, gaslighting/manipulation, etc
What I do irl: I love to skate, draw, write, and listen to music. I am also a (mostly) practiced boxer so I’d be happy to provide any information I can about writing realistic hand-to-hand combat whump :)
So yeah I can’t wait to stop lurking and actually dive into this wonderful community and get to know you guys :)
