Figiel, M.D., On Damascus Steel, New York, 1991, pp.68-69 Lot Notes When it was published by Figiel, he wrote that whilst this blade was characteristic of north west India, the absence of a ricasso on the blade may justify a Persian attribution. Ornamented Lenticular Viking Sword of Byzantine Manufacture w/double-edged blade of gradual taper; inlaid on both sides in gold and silver with decorative patterns, one side bearing a gradually tapering geometric-architectural design in five stages and the other bearing a gradually tapering palmette design. The hilt comprising down-curved cross guard, sturdy tang and five-lobed pommel riveted to the upward-curving upper guard; the cross-guard, upper guard and pommel all inlaid in silver with decorative knotwork and tracery and in gold with dots. Overall length: 94 cm (37"); Blade length: 80.6 cm (31.75") This rare Viking sword, the hilt of Petersen Type O, has a cross-guard with decorative devices reminiscent of those on one of the three swords that were found in the rich ship burial of about 900 at Hedeby in Denmark when it was subsequently excavated in the 1950s. More of these ‘rabbit ear’ or ‘knotted rope’ characters may be found on three of the ‘Hiltipreht’ group of swords, namely one in the Wallace Collection, London (Inv. No. A456), the Ballinderry sword in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin (Inv. No.1928.382) and the example from Malhus in the Trondheim Museum, Norway (Petersen, Abb.89). Scottish Dirk Circa 1800 A large and exceptional Scottish brass mounted dirk dating to circa 1800 in excellent condition with original scabbard. The grip is formed from dark, age-coloured, bog oak. The middle section is boldly carved with bands of Celtic interlace interspaced with raised studs. The wood is fluted around the pommel beneath the cap. The area between the haunches is carved with panels of interlace. The haunches are mounted with side straps and the grip is mounted with a brass basal protective guard which is concave shaped on its lower side to fit the convex scabbard mount applied to the mouth of the scabbard. World War 2 Office of Strategic Services Smatchet Designed by William E. Fairbairn Smatchet measures 16 3/8" overall. The blade itself measures 11 1/8" w/ parkerized finish. A Smatchet is a short, heavy fighting knife/sword 16.5 inches (42 cm) in overall length (including grip). It was designed by knife fighting expert and instructor Capt. William E. Fairbairn during World War II. Though described in the Office of Strategic Services catalogue as a cross between a machete and a bolo, it was actually based on the Royal Welch Fusiliers Trench Knife of World War I, and was designed as a pure combat knife. It has a broad, leaf-shaped blade sharpened the full length on one side, and from the tip to half of the other side. The entire blade is coated with a dull matte finish to prevent detection at night from stray reflections. According to Fairbairn, the Smatchet was an ideal close-combat weapon for those not armed with a rifle. The psychological reaction of any man, when he first takes the smatchet in his hand is full justification for its recommendation as a fighting weapon. He will immediately register all the essential qualities of good soldier - confidence, determination, and aggressiveness. Its balance, weight and killing power, with the point, edge or pommel, combined with the extremely simple training necessary to become efficient in its use, make it the ideal personal weapon for all those not armed with a rifle and bayonet. The Smatchet was used by British and American special forces (Special Air Service and Office of Strategic Services, respectively) during World War II. In the late 1980s, Col. Rex Applegate licensed a modified version of the smatchet he and Fairbairn designed late in World War II. He called it the "Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Smatchet". https://sword-site.com/thread/1068/ww2-smatchet-designed-william-fairbairn #knives #knife #knifephotography #battle #prep #bugout #combatives #mma #gun #steel #fights #fight #punch Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smatchet www.ebay.com https://www.instagram.com/p/CngdGmgrStG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Anthony Bourdain Meteorite Chef Knife by Bob Kramer "You could buy a BMW for the price of this thing. It used to be that you put your name on the list and then you wait for years to get one, but this was given to me by the maker, Bob Kramer, at a very reasonable price. He forges his own steel using all the different elements-there are pieces of meteorite in there! He beats it until it’s insanely hot, and pounds it and folds it and pounds it-It don’t know how many hundreds of layers. It’s like a mille-feuille. I don’t trust anyone else to touch it. There’s an old superstition that you can’t trust your knife until you cute yourself with it-so until then, you have to be wary of it. Once you nick yourself, your relationship can begin. I am not looking forward to my first cut with this. It will literally nick your finger off very, very quickly. And I like my fingers. I’m afraid of it. I fear the knife." -Anthony Bourdain (as told to Julia Black) Sold for $231,250.00USD 10/30/19 11:56:51 AM ET Description With the certificate of authenticity issued to Anthony Bourdain, March 31, 2016; with a black carrying case Catalog Number 87 Estimate $4000-6000 Measurements Length: the blade 10 inches, overall 15 1/4 inches Weight The knife and sheath 1 lb. 1 oz.
