Okay but like I’m in the middle of a panic attack bc I’m concerned I won’t ever be able to fall in love with a real man bc I love my fictional characters too much. Make me feel better. Am I a freak? What if I get married but then fall for a fictional character and want a divorce ya know?

Character: Malcolm Bright
From: Prodigal Son
Representation: Emotional Abuse Survivor, Mental Illness/Disorder (PTSD/C-PTSD, Nightmare Disorder, Sleep Disorder)
Their Importance: There are plenty of examples of protagonists who are vaguely described as being “dysfunctional” or even having flat-out non-existent diagnoses and their issues are never dealt with in any depth by the story. Malcolm, our hero is explicitly stated to have C-PTSD and night terrors as a result of the trauma of discovering his father is a serial killer and the various horrific manipulative things he did to keep the secret from everyone but Malcolm.
Unlike may fictional depictions of mental illness Malcolm’s symptoms don’t vanish when narratively convenient and they often manifest in unglamorous ways. He frequently has flashbacks, trigger reactions to cases that remind him of his own past, regular, debilitating night terrors scare loved ones and put him in danger and is often unwittingly creepy whenever particularly morbid cases come up. Like many real people with mental illnesses the severity of his symptoms fluctuates, both in reaction to distressing events and at random. He’s also regularly seen attending therapy.
Despite all his angst about possibly turning out like his father, his frequent accidental creepiness and questionable decision-making he’s ultimately a heroic character that’s excellent at his job.
Issues: Even by the standards of your typical police procedural Prodigal Son is absurdly brutal. You’d probably need an entire website to list all the potential violence/abuse/manipulation-related triggers.
Thanks to anon for the write-up!

Prodigal Son | Malcolm’s Meds
Because we’re all a little obsessive and like cataloguing these things, I took a closer look and screencapped the number and shape of the med bottles from aired episodes (up to 1x13) - pretty sure some footage from the pilot is mixed in with episodes 2 and 13, as the number and shape of the pill bottles changes from 5x slim bottles in the pilot to 4x bottles, consisting of 2 slim and 2 larger.
If anyone can shed any light on what meds he takes too - that would be great, ya know, for reference purposes - I think I’ve seen sertraline and trazodone on labels, but it’s late and my eyes are starting to go…
1x01 - Pilot - 5x slim med bottles (1 is in Malcolm’s hands)
Tumblr media
1x02 - Annihilator - 5x slim med bottles (note the same footage from the pilot, with 1 being in Malcolm’s hands), switching to 4x mixed size later when Dani visits
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1x03 - Fear Response - 4x mixed size bottles
Tumblr media
1x05 - The Trip - 4x mixed size bottles
Tumblr media
1x08 - Family Friend - 4x mixed size bottles (and a nicely bruised Malcolm… what, don’t judge me…)
Tumblr media
1x13 - Wait & Hope - close up shot of 5x bottles (same as the Pilot, though did they darken his tshirt somehow?). His water and Daily Affirmation cards are to the left of the bottles (as we look at them). The next shot of Malcolm throwing his meds up in the air and catching them shows 4x mixed size med bottles and the Daily Affirmation cards over to the right of them.

Bonus - “I can overcome any challenge” promo - back to 4x mix sized bottles

PERIOD DRAMA APPRECTIATION WEEK
Day 1: Favorite Period Drama ➢ POLDARK (2015-19)
You came here as a miner’s daughter and married into this ancient family and you took its standards as your own. You mistake your own value. Ross was a wise man when he chose you, and he will not forget it.
