Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov (Russian: Гавриил Абрамович Илизаров; 15 June 1921 – 24 July 1992)
Tumblr media
Was a Soviet physician, known for inventing the Ilizarov apparatus for lengthening limb bones and for the method of surgery named after him, the Ilizarov surgery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He discovered that by carefully severing a bone without severing the periosteum around it, one could separate two halves of a bone slightly and fix them in place, and the bone would grow to fill the gap. He also discovered that bone regrows at a fairly uniform rate across people and circumstances. These experiments led to the design of what is known as an Ilizarov apparatus, which holds a bone so severed in place, by virtue of a framework and pins through the bone, and separates halves of the bone by a tiny amount; by repeating this over time, at the rate of the bone's regrowth, it is possible to extend a bone by a desired amount

In 1980, Carlo Mauri, an Italian mountaineer, explorer, and photojournalist, on the urgings of his Russian colleague Yuri Senkevich, travelled to Kurgan, in the Soviet Union. He was to be treated by Ilizarov for a tibial fracture that healed incorrectly after a skiing accident ten years earlier. Italian doctors had long given up hope of any surgical improvement to the leg. Ilizarov distracted the stiff non-union in his tibia by 2 cm, healing the pseudarthrosis, corrected an equinus deformity by distraction and lengthened his leg. Mauri dubbed Ilizarov "the Michelangelo of Orthopaedics". On his return to Italy, the healing of Mauri's leg amazed orthopaedic surgeons. Subsequent to this, Ilizarov was invited by Antonio Bianchi-Maiocchi and Roberto Cattaneo to be a guest speaker at the AO Italy conference in 1981 in Bellagio. He gave three lectures at the conferences to more than 200 participants from Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.

Nakano Takeko (中野 竹子, April 1847 – 16 October 1868) was a Japanese female warrior of the Aizu Domait, who fought and died during the Boshin War. During the battle of Aizu she fought with a nagitana (a Japanese polearm) and was the leader of an ad hoc corps of female combatants who fought in the battle independently. After taking a bullet in the chest she had her sister behead her, so that the enemy would not take her as a war trophy!

Ida Minerva Tarbell
Tumblr media
Ida Minerva Tarbell (November 5, 1857 – January 6, 1944) was an American writer, investigative journalist, biographer and lecturer. She was one of the leading muckrakers of the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and pioneered investigative journalism. Born in Pennsylvania at the onset of the oil boom, Tarbell is best known for her 1904 book The History of the Standard Oil Company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The work contributed to the dissolution of the Standard Oil monopoly and helped usher in the Hepburn Act of 1906, the Mann-Elkins Act, the creation of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Clayton Antitrust Act.
Tumblr media
Tarbell's own first-hand experience with life in the Pennsylvania oil fields and the fact that Standard Oil was a trust represented by only one person, Rockefeller, and therefore might make the story easier to follow. Tarbell's father expressed concern to her about writing about Standard Oil warning her that Rockefeller would stop at nothing and would ruin the magazine. One of Rockefeller's banks did indeed threaten the magazine's financial status to which Tarbell shocked the bank executive by replying, "Of course that makes no difference to me". The documentation and oral interviews she gathered proved Standard Oil had used strong-arm tactics and manipulated competitors, railroad companies and others to reach its corporate goals. Organized by Tarbell into a cogent history, they became a "damning portrayal of big business" and a personal "account of petty persecution" by Rockfeller. A subhead on the cover of Weinberg's book encapsulates it this way: "How a female investigative journalist brought down the world's greatest tycoon and broke up the Standard Oil monopoly".

Barbary Lions
Tumblr media
A lion walks alone in the desert.
This is a 1925 photo of possibly the last Barbary lion in the wild before its extinction. It was taken by French photographer Marcelin Flandrin while he was onboard a flight on the Casablanca-Dakar air route.
Barbary lions once roamed the vast deserts and mountains of the Barbary coast in North Africa from present day Morocco to Egypt. They were thought to have been one of the largest lion species to have ever existed and were noted for having distinctly dark manes. These were the same lions that were regularly captured by hunters for their games in the Roman colosseum. Damnatio ad bestias (Latin for “condemnation to beasts”) was a form of capital punishment practiced by the Romans in which the condemned prisoner was executed by Barbary lions or other big cats.
The population of Barbary lions continued to decline with the expansion of the Arab empire from 632 to 1258—when the Islamic Golden Age came to an end after the Siege of Baghdad by the Mongols. Survivors claimed that “the waters of the Tigris ran black with ink from the enormous quantities of books flung into the river and red from the blood of the scientists and philosophers killed.” Amidst the turmoil in the region and as empires crumbled and fell, the Barbary lions continued to survive until the arrival of European colonists in the 19th century. Big-game hunting rose in popularity during this time and effectively killed off the few that were left. Not a single Barbary lion was seen from 1901 to 1910, and by the 1920s, most scientists believed that they had become extinct.
There was a reported sighting in Morrocco in 1948 and in a heavily forested area in Algeria (near the city of Sétif) as late as 1958. The forest, however, was destroyed during the Algerian War in the same year.
Today, there are approximately 100 captive lions that possess the genes of the Barbary lions, however, none of them are pure.

Gryffindor
Tumblr media
The Gryffindor house emphasised the traits of courage as well as "daring, nerve, and chivalry", and thus its members were generally regarded as brave, though sometimes to the point of recklessness. Some Gryffindors had also been noted to be short-tempered.

Gryffindors are known for being courageous, daring, brave, fiercely loyal, intelligent, and kind
Gryffindors are incredibly selfless and frequently go out of their way to make sacrifices for others. They are known for facing their ultimate fears in order to do what is right
Good Gryffindor Traits / Bad Gryffindor Traits
Brave Reckless
Loyal Prideful
Selfless Stubborn
Strong leaders Rule breakers
Courageous Hero complex
Tumblr media
Stubborn
This is one of the most obvious negative traits of Gryffindor house. While many of the good things about Gryffindor are apparent, these traits also have a bit of a dark side. Gryffindors can be loyal to a fault and can be a little bit black-and-white in their thinking. This can cause them to be stubborn. They often get ideas in their heads or feel they are right about something and it's hard to sway them once they've dug their heels in. Harry Potter himself is a good example of how stubborn people in this house can be.
Reckless
It’s pretty clear that the worst traits of Gryffindors are a result of their admirable traits taken to the extreme. Recklessness is just the more extreme, unhealthy version of daring. While having nerve can be a good thing, it’s also important to have common sense and to know when you’re going too far. Gryffindors are a bit prone to being extreme for attention and glory. Their recklessness can get them and others into trouble.
Short Tempered
This is another example of how the best traits of Gryffindor can also lead to the worst traits. While they can be quite passionate and loyal, this can also lead to being too angry or hot-headed. They aren’t very good at thinking through things calmly, and they are often quite controlled by their emotions. Sometimes Gryffindors need to practice having a cool head and even temper.
