Will makes Nico feel like he can fly. He strokes Nico's hair and his wings unfold, sending him soaring through the air.

But somehow, all Nico can ever feel is the oil slicking his feathers, sticking to him dirtily. The weight of his past, ever present. He senses it in the stares as he walks through camp.

"Hey, what is it?" Will brushes his arm, eyes concerned.

"I don't know... if I fell, would you laugh at me?"

Will grins. "Yeah. But I would help you up, too."

Nico is satisfied. There are still some people who see his shine.

one of my favourite things about orchestra au characterization is the way nico and will are both what each other seems to be- nico does things based off emotions, but on the outside, he's very good at justifying what he does to others so he comes off as very logical. he's also much better at holding his composure than Will, who does things based on logic. the thing is that it's his own personal logic that only makes sense to him, so to others, he actions looks rash and confusing. their character arcs are both about them becoming more balanced - nico showing those emotions outwardly, and Will being more honest about why he does things and putting himself in other's shoes so that he emotionally connects with others more. then they try to find that balance with each other.

was watching legally blonde then writing orchestra au and got to thinking. If I were to make a legally blonde au of orchestra au Will would be the Elle Woods, a musician following Malcolm (or someone) into Julliard or something. Nico would be the Emmett Forrest who is already in a relatively high position and encourages him along the way. This would make 0 sense narratively (or characteristically to be honest).
