Earth’s oldest rock.⠀ The felsic gneiss that can be found at the Acasta River in Canada are the Earth’s oldest rocks (a smidgen over 4 billion years old). Some friends of mine (Tim Johnson and Nick Gardiner) have recently had an incredible new piece of science published in Nature Geoscience (one the worlds most highly regarded geology journals) that discusses a meteorite impact melt as the origin of the rocks that would later be turned into the Acasta Gneiss.⠀ Phase equilibria (looking at mineral assemblages) and trace element modelling showed that the Acasta Gneiss protolith was produced by partial melting of the original mafic rocks that formed the uppermost layers of the crust on the primitive Earth. This melting was calculated to have occurred at very low pressures and temperatures of around 900 degrees Celsius consistent with with the intense heating caused by meteorite bombardment that likely typified the first half a billion years of Earth history.⠀ The partial melting produced felsic composition rocks that over the next billions of years were variably altered and deformed by tectonic process and extensive weathering and erosion. #geologyrocks #geology #geologylife #amazing #super https://www.instagram.com/p/BsYoWgFBdCY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nec7a0a1w9z

outcrops of the Smaull Graywacke of the (Neoproterozoic) Colonsay Group. These are turbidites (deposits of submarine “avalanches”) that were later folded and cleaved during the end-Ordovician Caledonian Orogeny (equivalent of east coast North America’s Taconian Orogeny). #geology #geologyrocks #geologylife #sedimentology #turbidites #amazing https://www.instagram.com/p/BsV8glChFSr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18h4469y1so3n
