After the performance, there was still an ample time to enjoy the scenery of the Dong Shan River Park before going back to the dormitory. The group decided to take a swim at the swimming facilities inside the park, which were built for the people of Yilan and its visitors to enjoy within the duration of the entire festival.
Tumblr media
At around 5:00 PM, the group arrived at the dormitory. In the evening, the 2016 YICFFF Summit and Appreciation Party was held at the Hotel Royal Chiaoshi. Three representatives per group were requested to attend the event (group leader, one male and one female member). The groups were required to wear the traditional costumes of the country that they represent. This event was held to give thanks to all of the sponsors of the 2016 YICFFF. This was also an opportunity for every group to express their feedbacks about their experience in relation to their participation to the said festival.

At 2:00 PM, there was an interview for the official blog site of 2016 YICFFF. The interview lasted for one hour and thirty minutes. The meaning behind the pieces that were performed, the concept about the group’s costume, and the background of the group were few of the major topics that were discussed during the said interview.
At around 4:00 PM, the Padayon Rondalla had a last-minute rehearsal with DCR. At 5:00 PM, all the groups were asked to prepare and immediately assemble to the Outdoor Theatre for the preparation of the Closing Ceremony.

Five participants from each group were tasked to give a short farewell message. All of the participants held a torch and walked around the Dong Shan River Park. Audience and the 2016 YICFFF staff lined along the path and waved goodbye to the festival’s participants. All of the participants went back to the Red Brick Square to observe the releasing of the balloons. This is to signify the anticipation for the 2017 YICFFF.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before heading home, the YICFFF 2016 Staff representative gave tokens for the Dipolog Community Rondalla. The members of the YICFFF 2016 staff rendered a send-off song for the group. Taiwan is truly the heart of Asia.
Tumblr media
The 14-day trip was filled with invaluable learning for every member of the Dipolog Community Rondalla. It has imparted the essential values of resiliency, respect, character, professionalism, camaraderie, and understanding across cultures. It is with great hope that travels and opportunities such as the YICFFF will nourish the contribution that the Philippine rondalla can offer to the international scene. It can be conclusively said that despite language barrier and cultural differences, music and art can create harmonious rhythm among the peoples of the world.

Another Formosan Journey (Part 1)
The 14-day wanderlust experience of Dipolog Community Rondalla.
Music penetrates beyond the limits of distance. The participation of the Dipolog Community Rondalla (DCR) to the 2016 Yilan International Folklore and Folkgame Festival (YICFFF) consisted of of 13 performances and a performance for the Closing Ceremony. The YICFFF is an annual summer festival which focuses on performance, exhibition, games, and cultural exchange. The group stayed in Taiwan for a total of 14 days from August 3 to August 16, 2016.
Dipolog Community Rondalla departed for Cebu City from the Dapitan City Port on August 1, 2016 at around 4:00 PM. The group arrived in Cebu Mactan International Airport on August 2, 2016 at around 6:00 AM. On-board Cebu Pacific Flight 5J300 bound for Taipei, the group left at around 10:00 PM on August 2, 2016. At around 12:30 AM on August 3, 2016, the group arrived at the Taoyuan International Airport.
The Cardinal Tien College of Healthcare Management Dormitory served as the official residence of all the international performing groups, and as well as the 2016 YICFFF staff. It is located at No. 112, Minzu Road, Xindian District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Tumblr media
Day 1. August 3, 2016. Upon arrival at the dormitory, positive impressions immediately dawned. The Cardinal Tien College of Healthcare Management Dormitory is a five-story building with a basement. All of the rooms in every floor of the dormitory have identical layouts. There is a laundry area, a lounge, and a kitchen in every floor. Every room can accommodate four persons. In order to maximize the space, bunk beds are installed in each of the rooms. However, there are only study tables and cabinets in the lower part, and the upper deck is utilized as the sleeping area. There is also a separate toilet and bathroom in every room. Since it is a dormitory, there are also areas for hanging your wet clothes in the terrace of every room.

The first day consisted of free time and rehearsals. The meals were served at the dormitory’s restaurant, which is located on the first floor. Every meal was on a buffet-style. You can choose what you can eat from the different types of dishes on the serving table. There were also different kinds of breads, desserts, ice cream, and beverages.
In the afternoon, a short rehearsal for the group was held at one of the classrooms in the nearby building.

Later in the afternoon, the group first strolled in the city proper of Yilan, took photos, and ate dinner at a traditional Chinese food house along with other international groups. There was also a Chinese opera presentation that was held in line with the celebration of the Ghost Month.

Immediately after the performances, DCR proceeded to the Closing Ceremony rehearsals at Fushing Junior High School. The performance was intended for a musical exchange to be showcased during the closing ceremonies. It was meant to exhibit the flexibility of the musicians, even despite the differences in the type of instruments that were used by the performers. DCR played along with musicians from Taiwan, such as the Yilan Youth Orchestra and Formosa Melody Music Center.

Mr. Vincent Li of Formosa Melody Music Center and Mr. Jay Sarita of Dipolog Community Rondalla discussed the repertoire for the Closing Ceremony.
Day 3. August 5, 2016. No performance was scheduled for Day 3, however the group had to attend the Closing Ceremony rehearsals at Fushing Junior High School in the afternoon. DCR had to rehearse five new pieces for the closing ceremonies. The first and second pieces were “Spring Wind”, a traditional Chinese song and “Lord of the Dance”, an Irish folk song. These pieces were played along with the Chinese Orchestra. The third piece was Jiang Jun Ling (General’s Command). The Fourth piece was the “Children’s Tune Medley”. It is arranged for rondalla by Mr. Dave Dagta of the Padayon Rondalla. The Children’s Tune Medley was composed of the folk songs “Greensleeves, Can Can, Arirang, Do-Re-Mi”. The Fifth piece is “Flower”. It is a Japanese song that was performed along with  by the Fushing Junior High School Chorale. The last piece is the most famous folk song in Yilan, “Diu Diu Dang” which is a train song. Mr. Vincent Li of Formosa Melody Music Center directed the flow of the program for the musical part of the closing ceremony. Mr. Jay Sarita of DCR served as the conductor for the whole musical performance.

Sammi Lu (Lu Yi-An) is the official translator, road manager, assistant, and the best companion the group has ever had.
When the rehearsals ended, DCR headed to a restaurant which is owned by Mr. Li’s sister. All groups that were invited for the festival through the Formosa Melody Music Center were gathered for the welcome dinner. At around 7:00 PM, the group dined with the Padayon Rondalla and Loboc Children’s Choir from the Philippines, and other groups from Spain and Japan.

Mr. Li’s daughter (far left) joined the group for the dinner.
Day 4. August 6, 2016. Only one performance at 11:00 AM was scheduled for this day.

Dinner for all of the performers was served at the park. Since it is already the last day of the closing ceremony rehearsals, the performers rehearsed at the Outdoor Theater of Dong Shan River Park at 6:00 PM.
Tumblr media
It was designated as the venue for the entire closing ceremony program. The order of the program, the blocking of the performers, the sound check, and the entire flow of the ceremony were rehearsed. The rehearsal made all the performers tired, yet it has to be done in order to produce an excellent output.

In the afternoon, the group went to the Longtan Lake. Some of the members rented bicycles, while there were some who chose to walk around the lake. The scenery introduced a relaxing vibe. It was therapeutic in the sense that nature came a whole lot close to its visitor’s heart. There were fruit and tea vendors along the pathways beside the lake. There was also a temple and some tombstones within the lake’s vicinity. The lake is rich with the wonders of flora and fauna. No fishing is allowed in the area, thus several types of fish thrive in the lake.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Loboc Children’s Choir had their performance set before the Dipolog Community Rondalla.
After the performance, the group went to the National Center for Traditional Arts. It was the second time for some members of the group to visit this place. The first time was on last December 2014 for the first leg of Cuerdas Global; it was during this time that the group stayed for two nights at the dormitory of the National Center for Traditional Arts during winter time last 2014.

Broken String
Inevitably, chaos confronts stillness and placidity. There are ideals that just cannot be entirely thrown away, as if it does not matter. It is difficult to succumb into mediocrity, but living in a third world country makes us experience these. No matter how we may try to close our eyes in order to save ourselves from the disappointment that we encounter, we can’t help but just cringe at the sight of it. The world is filled with stubbornness. If you can directly proved that your choices are way beyond what others call as stupidity - then let it be your choice. Otherwise, you are just a plain old waste. The choices made by people are directly impacting the stability of their environment. We may see how better we are today, but tomorrow we might not be anymore. It is too irresponsible for people to brag how they made their feelings define them. No matter how many justifications you might give regarding your action, it still cannot deny its allegiance to heart breakers. It is even more disappointing to think that there are innocent entities that could have realized their potential - yet, some people destroyed it for them. It is true that we need to set aside a piece of ourselves first before we can take part of a greater whole. However, our selfishness should not redirect us into destroying a set of memories that takes a great amount of time to build. We are not born into this world just because we are all entitled to what we think we have, and what we can say or do. We are here to become responsible of the capacities that we possess. This includes our innate responsibility to care for each other. In the contrary, people forget to set this into their mind. What creates a ripple, amidst the waters of a peaceful lake, is the little stone that you throw to it. This is metaphorical with people’s choices. We might think that we have done what is right, but there are times when we deny its impact to others’ lives.

HATE
Now I understand why I always have the chance of experiencing disheartened courage, such feelings occur because I feel unheard, disrespected, and discredited. I hate to impose on people, and I am clearly not pushy. I work with those who I prefer to be with, and who would like to handle situations as a team. I do not appreciate people who would intentionally or unintentionally give pride to their part of the bargain, although apparently they are lacking by all means. Remember, the letters that are presently attached to your names doesn’t automatically give you all the privileges in the world. Some privileges are meant to be worked hard for. It is not instantaneous, and it should not be DEMANDED.

Glittering Blazes
There’s a fire of art that is burning in my heart. Little by little that flame faces the challenges of external threats - its humble composition dredged into extinguishers. Until that fiery flame, which used to consume fuels and fuels of creativity, is blown away by confusion, sadness, discouragement, and a dying passion. However when the embers are solely left - it captures the judgment of completely turning into coal. A black, lifeless, and solid coal symbolizes the end of the personification of the passion for art. Nevertheless, if no one pours water over the embers, it can still be fanned into flames once more.
The oxygen around serves as an invisible object that aids in the re-creation of the once adored flame. It brings warmth to the eeriness. People do just the same. There are those seemingly sheer existence that we might give little attention to, yet they are the oxygen that sees to it that we live. We live out of our passion to re-create beautiful imagery, sensational sounds, creative expressions, awakening of the soul, and giving immortality to traditions.
Adequate times may tell us to redirect our imaginings to practical interests, but random personalities may never understand how our passion subjugates contentment. Few may fail to empathize how this conquest gives food into our mouth, how this entails stability, and how this may give pleasurable assurances.
Miraculously, art and passion can do the same. A great motivator is in finding meaning in all the endeavor that any one partakes into. Art usually gives us this privilege. It teaches us to put words into our creations. It will lead us to the process of molding our best versions. It is in art that we become reminded of the magic that we can do as humans. How can one turn a lifeless face into a belle of the night? How can a tune be turned into a full depiction of a certain feeling? How can a series of movements be transformed into a graceful dance? How can simultaneous sways and bends mimic the movement of both the living and non-living? How can a single wire and wood be made into a gigantic creation? All these are the products of our own power to wield. That power need not be a pixy dust that makes us fly. It need not be contained in a magic wand. It need not be shown by a crystal ball. Instead, it is in our hands, heart, and mind.
We are not called witches, wizards, magicians, fairies, or fortune tellers; we are artists. As human as we are, we are magical creatures that turn our humanity into characters of this earth. We make wonders out of basic objects that exist either in or outside our confines. This is all for the reason that we have the fires lit in our hearts. For as long as we don’t permit an entity to pour water into those embers, we can still blow and cast that flame - that blaze which deeply roots into the cores of our being. ART.
