What Is A Pressure Reducing Valve?
There are many varieties of safety valves out there for different machinery depending upon function. One of these is a pressure reducing valve which is used in liquid and gas-based systems. They are used to control the pressure of these systems. In this article, we will cover the definition of a pressure reducing valve and how it differs from a pressure relief valve.
What is a pressure reducing valve?
A pressure reducing valve is commonly known as a PRV. It is used for lowering and regulating water or air pressure between the upstream and downstream sides of a pressurised system. It will sit in line on a mains inlet pipe and allow the user to adjust the desired downstream pressure via a dial or wheel on top of the valve. Once this pressure is dialed in, the pressure reducing valve will continually open and close slightly in response to upstream pressure and flow rate. The goal of a PRV is to maintain safe pressure on the downstream side based on the settings of the user. They work by converting high pressure at the valve inlet to a significantly lower pressure at the outlet side.
How is a pressure reducing valve different from a pressure relief valve?
A pressure reducing valve is different from a pressure relief valve even though they both share the same PRV acronym. A pressure reducing valve is designed to regulate the air/liquid pressure coming through the inlet depending on the amount of liquid/gas currently in the system. It will adapt by opening and closing the inlet to the relevant amount required to keep the flow from the inlet consistent. This differs from a pressure relief valve which is designed as a fail safe that will open suddenly to release some liquid or gas from the system if the level gets too high. This means that pressure relief valves need to be checked and maintained every time that they end up being used. A pressure reducing valve is vital for the day-to-day, whilst a pressure relief valve is vital for use as a failsafe incase of any malfunctions down the line.

What Is Pressure Canning?
Food preservation is as common as rainy days in the UK! Whether it is with a freezer, by creating jams, or otherwise there are many ways to make preservable food that can be enjoyed by the whole family at their convenience. One of the newest trends heading over to the UK from the USA is pressure canning. “But what is pressure canning?” I hear you ask. Simply put pressure canning is a process where food is stored securely in sealed jars which are then heated to a high enough temperature to remove all bacteria. The food can then be cooled and stored away for longer periods of time with a shelf life of upto 1 year being possible depending on the item in question. In this article, we will be taking a look at what pressure canning is, what foods are suitable, and more.
What is pressure canning?
Pressure canning involves a pressure canner, jars of various sizes depending on the item being stored, a water bath, and time for the jars to be sealed. It is similar to the process of water bath canning but is suitable for less acidic foods such as meats. Essentially the same process occurs but the water is heated to a temperature and pressure where all germs and other bacteria are killed. This means that the food can be stored for a much longer period of time. There are a number of different pressure canners, jars, and devices that you can use to get the job done. Read our article here to go further in depth on how to get setup for pressure canning.
What foods require pressure canning?
As stated pressure canning is a suitable option for foods with a lower PH and less acidity than fruits/jams etc. Some of the common foods that are suitable for pressure canning include:
Meats
Seafood
Low acidic vegetables (Such as carrots, green beans, spinach)
Soups and stews
Stocks
Dry beans
Are there any foods not suitable for pressure canning?
Pressure canning is a specific method of preservation and some foods just will not respond well to it due to the high temperatures and pressure. Some of these include:
Milk
Flour
Pasta
Rice
Eggs
How can Love Jars help?
Are you excited by the possibilities of pressure canning and want to explore the subject in further depth? Perhaps you are brand new to pressure canning and want to get a grasp on the basics. Here at Love Jars we have a series of video classes that go through everything from the very basics to advanced canning techniques. We also offer seasonal live classes which you can follow along with in real time and ask any questions that you have. Take a look for yourself and see where it takes you!

Unlocking Children’s Potential With Engineering And Design
At MKPS we believe that each child will show a unique set of interests and these need to be catered for in their education. One of the common subjects that children may show an interest in is engineering and design. We aim to provide a high quality experience in this subject with projects ranging from measuring the speed of wind to C.A.D design, as well as vehicle making to electrical engineering. Children work independently and as a team to investigate how materials can be utilised for other purposes.
The Benefits Of Learning Engineering And Design At MKPS
Engineering and design provides children the opportunity and platform to improve skills required in later life. Using tools safely and accurately, the children discover new ways to succeed in their tasks.
Safety underpins all aspects of the children’s learning, supervised activities enhance the children’s knowledge and understanding of the wider world.
The Engineering Design Process
As part of their learning, children will be taught the engineering design process. This process is a series of steps that engineers follow to find a solution to a problem. The steps include problem solving processes such as, for example, determining your objectives and constraints, prototyping, testing and evaluation. While the design process is iterative it follows a predetermined set of steps, some of these may need to be repeated before moving to the next one. This will vary depending on the project itself, but allows lessons to be learnt from failures and improvements to be made. The process is as follows:
Define The Problem: What is the problem that needs to be solved? What are the limitations and requirements?
Brainstorm Possible Solutions: We teach that good designers brainstorm possible solutions before starting a design
Research Ideas: By researching past projects, you can avoid the problems faced by others.
Establish Criteria and Constraints: Having listed potential solutions and determined the needs of the project, the next step is to establish any factors that may constrain your work. This can be done by revisiting the requirements and bringing together your findings and ideas from previous steps.
Consider Alternative Solutions: You may wish to consider further solutions to compare the potential outcomes and find the best approach.
Select An Approach: Once you have assessed your various options you can determine which approach best meets your requirements
Develop A Design Proposal: Having chosen your approach, the next step is to refine and improve the solution to create a design proposal.
Make A Model Or Prototype: Use your design proposal to make a prototype that will allow you to test how the final product will perform.
Test And Evaluate: each prototype will need testing, re-evaluation and improvement. Testing and evaluation allows you to see where any improvements are needed.
The Design: Once testing has been completed, the design can be revised and improved.
Create The Solution: After your refinements have been completed and fully tested, you can decide upon and create your finished solution.
“The Engineering and Design workshop is a fascinating place where children learn to plan and have fun building.” ( Daniel, Class 10)

What Is The Difference Between a Barrister and a Solicitor?
Barristers and solicitors both practice law in the UK, providing legal representation for their clients. Traditionally, the key differences between the two were that solicitors mainly worked directly with clients on strategy, collating court documentation, and other legal work outside the courtroom, whereas barristers represented clients in court after being instructed by the solicitor working on the case. However, the Bar Standards Board’s direct access scheme changed this. The scheme first started in 2004 but expanded to its current form in 2013. The scheme authorised qualified direct access barristers to accept instructions from members of the public directly. So, currently, what is the difference between a barrister and a solicitor in their day-to-day roles?
Key responsibilities of a solicitor
Solicitors mainly manage day-to-day legal issues, ensuring that their clients are given the support they need. They will represent the client from the beginning, listening to the client’s issue, explaining how the legal process will work, and completing legal documents such as claim forms and witness statements. Solicitors usually do not appear in court on behalf of their clients and will instead instruct a barrister to do this.
Key responsibilities of a barrister
When a case goes to court, the solicitor handling the case will instruct a barrister, who will read the client’s documents and familiarise themselves with the case. The barrister will often meet with the client in advance of any hearing and give an opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the client’s case.
Barristers are the ones that you think of in court. In higher courts (but not in the lower Family Court or tribunals), they will wear a wig and gown. Barristers are usually specialists in a particular area and are called upon for advice on complicated issues.
Barristers are able to represent clients in the highest of the UK courts. They know all of the correct etiquette and are able to provide the best possible representation for their clients in court. Barristers are usually self-employed, although they often work with other self-employed barristers in organisations called barristers’ “chambers”.
What is a Direct Access Barristers Chambers?
A direct access barristers chambers is one offering services to the public through the direct access scheme. Under the scheme, a barrister may register as a public access practitioner after completing training specified by the Bar Standards Board. This then allows that barrister to receive instructions directly from members of the public without a solicitor being involved. The direct access scheme can help clients reduce their legal costs because it enables them to manage their cases themselves but work with the barrister wherever necessary, e.g., on complex issues.  Direct access barristers can help with a range of work, such as drafting witness statements, drafting position statements, advising generally, and appearing in court.

Can I Sell My Business Before A Divorce
The divorce process can leave you feeling like you are in limbo, as you wait to see exactly what the result will be. Matters can become even more complicated when you are running your own business. So, can you sell your business before a divorce? Here, we look at some of the “pros” and “cons” of doing so.
Can I sell my business before a divorce?
The simple answer to this question is “yes” but bear in mind that if your partner finds out about the attempted sale, they may start divorce proceedings early and move for an injunction to block the sale.
If you see no alternative but to sell your business before a divorce, then you should think about several things before attempting a sale.
Things to consider before selling your business
The long-term effects of the decision
People naturally feel heightened emotions when a relationship breaks down. However, once divorce proceedings have been brought to a close, you may regret a rushed sale of your business. You might be able to look at the decision more objectively when the divorce is completed. Consider, for example, that selling your business takes away the chance for your children to take over your business, or for the business to grow and prosper.
Risk of sellers remorse
Your business might be in a slump at the time of a relationship breakdown, and you might be struggling to cope with running the business. The idea of capitalising a poorly-performing business is tempting. However, you never know when your luck might turn around. The next big idea could be around the corner, or a new trend might favour your industry. If your luck picks up then you can either carry on running the business or look to sell from a more beneficial position. By not allowing divorce to be a deciding factor in the sale of a business, you leave less room for seller’s remorse later on.
Timing of a sale
When selling a business, you need to know what the sale will mean for you. Speaking to financial and family lawyers, as well as an accountant, can be a great idea before starting the sale of your business. This is because the sale of a business can have tax implications.
The value of the business
The value of the business to you in practical terms might not be the same value that the court would attribute to the business. For example, if you have a share in a family business with your siblings, then the paper valuation of the business based on its turnover might not reflect the reality of the situation because you might be a minority shareholder or, if you are a majority shareholder, you might be subject to family pressures to not sell your shares, or sell them only to a particular person at a particular price.
You should be aware that if you sell your business for a particular value, then your partner may argue in divorce proceedings that the true value was in fact greater than what you sold it for.
A cleaner break for you and your partner
If you and your partner are joint owners of the business, then selling it before a divorce (to a third-party or to the other partner) could be sensible. It can be challenging if not practically impossible for divorced former partners to run a business after a divorce. Sharing a business can also complicate divorce proceedings. By selling the business and having clear figures from the sale, matrimonial assets can sometimes be more easily ascertained.
An opportunity for a fresh start
Selling a business is a big decision that is potentially life-changing. Perhaps you are tired of your industry and are looking for a change. Or maybe you want to retire. Divorce can be lengthy and complicated and, can “drag on”. By selling your business before the divorce, you will be able to make a clean break before the complications of divorce begin.
What is the court likely to make of it?
The powers of the Family Court on divorce are governed by the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. Section 25 of the 1973 Act sets out the factors to be considered by the Family Court when making a financial order. The court will consider business assets as part of the section 25 exercise. I Dropped My Mobile Phone In Water — Here’s What To Do
Oops! I Dropped My Mobile Phone in Water — Here’s What to Do
Introduction: We’ve all been there — that heart-stopping moment when your beloved mobile phone takes an unexpected dive into a pool, sink, or any water source. The toilet is the most common. This blog will tell you what to do if you have dropped your mobile phone in water. Fear not! While water damage can be quite a nuisance, acting swiftly and following the right steps can significantly increase your chances of saving your device. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the immediate actions to take if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation.
Retrieve the Phone Quickly: The first thing you need to do is retrieve your phone from the water as quickly as possible. The longer it stays submerged, the greater the chance of water seeping into critical components. Be cautious and don’t panic — a steady hand will help prevent unnecessary mishaps.
Power Off Immediately: If your phone is still on, power it off immediately. Press and hold the power button until the device shuts down. This helps reduce the risk of short circuits that can occur when water comes into contact with active electronics.
Remove External Accessories and SIM Card: Take off any external accessories, such as cases and screen protectors. Additionally, remove the SIM card and any memory cards. These removable components can be salvaged even if the phone itself is beyond repair.
Dry the Surface: Gently pat the phone dry using a clean, lint-free cloth. Make sure to get into all the crevices, ports, and buttons. Avoid excessive rubbing, as this can push water deeper into the device.
Do Not Use Heat Sources: Contrary to popular belief, using a hairdryer, oven, or microwave to dry your phone can cause more harm than good. Excessive heat can damage internal components and worsen the water damage. Stick to natural drying methods.
Rice Is Not the Best Solution: While the rice method is commonly suggested, it’s not the most effective solution. Silica gel packets or dedicated moisture-absorbing products work better for drawing out moisture. Place your phone in a container filled with these packets and seal it tightly for 24–48 hours.
Avoid Shaking the Phone: Shaking your phone might seem like a good way to dislodge water droplets, but it can actually drive moisture further into delicate areas. Instead, gently tap the phone against your palm with the charging port facing downward to encourage water to drain out.
Seek Professional Help: If your phone shows no signs of life or exhibits unusual behaviour after the drying period, it’s time to consult a professional technician like Repair Not Replace. Whether you need an iPhone, Samsung, or iPad repair we can help. Even if it is okay, the impurities in the water can build up if they are not cleaned off and cause corrosion which will then cause a short circuit, this can happen straight away or take longer, so if you have an expensive phone you should consider a water damage service. Trying to power on a water-damaged phone can lead to irreversible damage, so it’s best to let a trained expert assess the situation. Call us at 0800 047 2047. Do not charge your device; putting power through it can cause more damage.
Accidentally dropping your mobile phone in water can be a stressful experience, but there’s hope for recovery if you act promptly and follow the right steps. Remember, the key is to act quickly, power off your device, remove external components, and employ proper drying techniques. While success isn’t guaranteed, taking these measures can greatly improve your chances of saving your precious gadget from the jaws of water damage.

Future-thinking Alternators
The role of an alternator is to generate electrical energy from mechanical energy, typically using a magnetic field. As engineering and the technology world continues to develop, the role of alternators becomes increasingly important.
Mobile power
As technology continues to develop, the need for portable power grows. An answer to this problem is the use of a mobile power alternator. For simple mobile alternator needs, a single-phase alternator is a good solution offering a self-energising system, self-adjustment to balance the generator’s output voltage and self-protection preventing speed from damaging it. For more advanced mobile alternator needs, a three-phase alternator is a good solution offering voltage adjustment to save energy, temporary voltage drops during idle times and sudden response times.
Hydropower
Alternators for Hydropower are essential for generating electrical energy from hydroelectricity plants and turbines, with the speed of rotation, cooling methods, bearings, IP protection, mechanical mounting & coupling joints all needing specific requirements. As well as the alternator requiring different protection frames dependent on the demands of the environment.

Nalgene - Taking the Labware Market by Storm
Who are Nalgene?
Nalgene is a brand of plastic products, initially starting with bottles and flasks, later expanding to include jars, labware and more. Nalgene first made a name for themselves in the 1970s when their bottles became the go-to sustainable substitute among backpackers that sought to restrict the amount of plastic they were using. Decades of success saw them join the Thermo Fisher family in 2004, operating throughout the international labware market.
What makes them special?
The Nalgene bottles have been an industry go-to and favourite for their light and durable properties, alongside their ability to resist flavours of all kinds. The wide-mouth allows for easy refilling, and whilst some customers find that to be a product flaw, the narrow-mouth option allows consumers to drink without any chance of spilling. Since joining the Thermo Fisher family, the Nalgene product portfolio has expanded to include a wide range of labware products.
How are Nalgene products supplied?
In the early 1970s, Nalgene began to scale its operations worldwide. In 1974, Techmate was established to specialise in the supply of Nalgene products across the UK and abroad. Over the past 40 years, Techmate has continued to be a Nalgene labware supplier and supply to industries ranging from large pharmaceutical companies, medical and life science research agencies, and government and local authority establishments. If you would like to find out more about their product offering, or are interested in buying Nalgene labware equipment, be sure to visit Techmate’s product catalogue.

Eco-Friendly Protective Packaging
Tumblr media
When looking for sustainable, eco-friendly products, you may only be thinking about the physical product itself — but how a product is packaged is just as important. Many forms of packaging cannot be recycled or reused and end up in landfills or the ocean. Even recyclable plastic packaging is often not enough, as 91% of plastics aren’t recycled, resulting in 25 million tons being dumped into the ocean each year. It’s about time we become more cautious about how our actions are affecting the environment, and what we can do to help. At Davpack, we understand how important our environment is, and we are working on the sustainability of our products, and encouraging our customers to go more eco friendly with us! Click here to view the range of eco-friendly protective packaging that we offer.
