I hold your picture in the moonlight
Your smile peeking through the glass
Your eyes begging to be seen
In a way only your first daughter could know
I can’t save you
Just as you couldn’t save me
I’m making my peace with that
Day by day
I walk alone amongst the people I love
Patiently putting out fires in my mind
And one day
Someone will smile at my photo in the moonlight
And my eyes will smile back

Once in a while
Pretend you don’t have him
Sit alone in your room
Legs crossed
on your wrinkled sheets
And hold your own hand
Feel each finger
Each toe
Run your fingers through your hair
Self love can be literal sometimes
If you don’t know what it means
Do what you’d do to him
Say romantic things
To yourself
Let your mind wander
You don’t have to be so afraid
To be alone

I had a garden of herbs once
modest at best
basil
oregano
lemon grass
every once in a while I’d grow some
tomatoes or
peppers
whenever I’d fall in love with someone new
I’d neglect the poor sanctuary
it would turn sad and brown
as if the season was changing
as if the land was lonely
whenever the person would leave me (inevitably)
I’d rush back to my garden
apologetically
crying
the tears reminded me
that it needed to grow
that i needed to grow as well
I’d provide the garden with life
while it would keep my hands busy
[but when I fell in love with you
we’d water the plants together
on Sunday afternoons]

It seems like
All the love poems
Are written for
Passionate flickers
Windows of understanding
Snippets of forever
I want to know
About the strong
Boring love
The steady flame
In the log cabin window
Everlasting friendship
Companionship
Choice
Compassion
Desire
to grow
Together

Morning coffee is a prayer
Except
Instead of the mother’s mercy
I ask
For my own
Because I haven’t done anything
Besides hurt
Myself
I pour the milk
And watch infinity unfold
Swirls of brown and cream
Become something
That belongs in heaven
I add sugar
Because life is short
I stir it together
I take a sip
it’s nothing incredible
But I feel happy

Look at yourself
Alone in your room
Worrying if you did heartbreak the right way
If you’ve suffered enough
When you should really be focused on
How it feels
To be in your skin
How they make you feel
When they brew a fresh cup of coffee
At 2 in the afternoon
How the sun feels
Peeking through the window shades
Like wind chimes made of light
How the cows eat grass
Without worrying about the process
How the feral cats live selfishly
Amongst the trash and
Take a breath
And listen to yourself
For what seems like the first time

I knew I had grown
When god himself
Told me I had wasted my life
And I laughed
And continued
Sniffing flowers
Dancing on cobblestone
Loving fiercely
Sharing boldly
Endlessly dreaming
Without waiting for it
To feel right
