one of the biggest things I can advocate for (in academia, but also just in life) is to build credibility with yourself. It’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking of yourself as someone who does things last minute or who struggles to start tasks. people will tell you that you just need to build different habits, but I know for me at least the idea of ‘habit’ is sort of abstract and dehumanizing. Credibility is more like ‘I’ve done this before, so I know I can do it, and more importantly I trust myself to do it’. you set an assignment goal for the day and you meet it, and then you feel stronger setting one the next day. You establish a relationship with yourself that’s built on confidence and trust. That in turn starts to erode the barrier of insecurity and perfectionism and makes it easier to start and finish tasks. reframing the narrative as a process of building credibility makes it easier to celebrate each step and recognize how strong your relationship with yourself can become

Me: oh wow, it’s really busy here at work, I should start doing something that isn’t my responsibility just to help out, maybe I can skip my break today, or stay a little—
My inner Chilchuk Tims: Your job description has your responsibility and includes hours worked and breaks. Stick to it unless they want to pay you more. No job is your friend no matter how much you like it.

Have you seen the new show? It's on Tubu. It's literally on Heebee. It's on Poodee with ads. It's literally on Dippy. You can probably find it on Weeno. Dude it's on Gumpy. It's a Pheebo original. It's on Poob. You can watch it on Poob. You can go to Poob and watch it. Log onto Poob right now. Go to Poob. Dive into Poob. You can Poob it. It's on Poob. Poob has it for you. Poob has it for you.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'Gabrielle lisant'/'Gabrielle reading' (1906). blue skies.
my first day "back" on here. i'm feeling refreshed today, since i slept very well (finally). i think today i'm going to focus on reading, since i'm behind on my tbr for this month.
some goals: - drink 2ls of water - read at least 100 pages - get some fresh air once the sun's out

more or less an update on this, since during the past two weeks i've finished my oral exam and i've graduated (yippie!), therefore making this introduction outdated.
technically, that means there wouldn't be a point for daily posts anymore (at least until i start college in the fall!) but i think i'm going to temporarily rebrand into a bit more of a lifeblr and still share things i want to work on, or keep track of, or that i just find fun, since these posts really helped me during my final exams and i want to keep that streak going.
thank you for all the encouragement during this incredible time! i hope we can continue to share the joys and sorrows of life and have a good time together.
an introduction
finally deciding to post an introduction of sorts, since i want to post more personal stuff (such as daily study updates, book reviews, etc) and not just be a reblogging lurker.
hey! i'm james (he/him) and hopefully i'll become a student majoring in comparative literature. in the meantime, i have to study for my final exams in january (done!!) i have to study for my very last (oral) exam in march, and what better way to force myself to study than to log my progress daily/semi-regularly on tumblr? i'll also post about current & long-time obsessions of mine such as... - classic literature (english and german literature in particular: shakespeare, goethe, büchner, the brontës, the pre-raphaelites, kafka, rainer maria rilke) - philosophy (trying to gain more knowledge over all, leaning towards existentialism) - my wip (queer fantasy in the fashion of R. F. Kuang's Babel with actual political themes) - disco elysium - hozier, alt-j, tame impala ...and anything else i find even remotely interesting or important.
i tag all my own posts with #snoopy's personal posts, and all my reading with #snoopy actually reads literature. i hope you have fun on my blog, enjoy scrolling! ✩

The Siren (1901), by J.W. Waterhouse
Compared to “Ulysses and the Sirens” painted in 1891, the siren shown here is a much more humanlike creature.  Only at the very end of her legs some scales are visible to show that she actually belongs to the sea.  The shipwrecked sailor does not believe his eyes when he sees the naked figure playing the lyre, but the fear for her power prevails on his face.
This work is the last in a series where Waterhouse combined the themes of death, sex and sea.  Earlier works include Circe Invidiosa (1892), Danaë (1892), The Merman (ca.1892) and A Mermaid (ca.1895).

dark academia on a poor university student budget
Because tuition is expensive and my job doesn't pay much.
•─•°•❀•°•─•
Letter-writing. Decorate the margins with simple doodles that you know they'd appreciate. Find your own, distinctive sign-off. (You can also do this online by customising emails, Google Docs links, etc.)
Libraries. Campus libraries and their hum of student chatter. Once they begin to get too loud for your liking, visit a public library and study amongst the towering shelves.
Thrifting. Slowly phase old porcelain tableware into your kitchen. Walk to class in a gently-battered long coat. Thumb through copies of classics with worn corners and an old love note on the inside cover. Especially if you find an ornate teacup or mug that you can keep at your study space to be completely yours.
Make it yourself. Press flowers between heavy books and use them as decoration in your journal or sketchbook. Cut up some scrap paper and make bookmarks with your favourite book quotes.
Explore. Wander around public parks in your favourite pullover or blazer, taking photos or sketching whatever it is that catches your interest. Investigate back corridors and secret passages on your campus.
Read all those books in your TBR. (I know you have a lot on there.)
Journal, write, sketch, paint, compose... indulge in whatever creative respite you choose. Create.
