OC Lore - Malachai and Esmerelda :)
Here's some lore at the request of a certain @crackpotposter
World Building Shenanigans
Now, these two are the basis of a bigger storyline that I plan to expand on whenever I have the motivation to. The premise of this world is that there are multiple deities, each deity would typically have a faction dedicated to worshipping them alone, but most people sort of have a general reverence for them all. I like to think there's a hierarchy of Gods, Malachai and Esmerelda being at the top (The Creator would technically be above them and the highest ranking being, but more on him later).
Each God has a Temple built for them by the mortals. A God's Temple is their home, and where mortals could come to ask for blessings or pray, and where their factions would work to maintain the grounds and worship them (a Temple's architecture often reflects the public opinion of the God which it belongs to). Within a God's Temple is their Altar, which could be as simple as an engraved stone slab or as elaborate as a 20ft tall lifelike statue. An Altar is the most sacred thing a God has, a symbol of status and influence, to deface or damage a God's Altar is the most severe insult possible to the God.
Character Shenanigans
Now, the Creator is the being that initially set the universe into motion, and is the being that creates the Gods. Only Esmerelda can contact him, and even so, he rarely responds.
Malachai, the God of Death, is quiet and patient and is the most in touch with the mortals out of all the Gods as he will meet every human who has been, is, and will be, at their deaths. He isn't the cruel grim reaper type, and instead tries to give the gentlest deaths he can, acting more like a guide to the afterlife rather than an executioner. The only times he'd ever be cold to a recently deceased soul is that of someone who has intentionally ended the life of others, there's nothing he hates more than someone cutting another's life short and disrupting fate. He is kind in his own ways, but very withdrawn, spending most of his days in his Temple gardens, tending to his prized white roses.
Esmerelda, the Goddess of Life, is bubbly and kind but very chaotic, and while she created the human race and most living things, she really isn't in touch with the mortals at all. She's sweet and good natured, but occasionally she can let the constant stream of adoration from the mortals get to her head, causing her to act in ways one would consider rather egotistical. She's very creative, spending the majority of her free time in her art studio, painting, sculpting, and drawing. Esmerelda is very hardworking and a perfectionist by every sense of the word, spending hours upon hours crafting the perfect sunsets, adding the right amount of dew to the grass in the mornings, adjusting the clouds in the sky to be just so.
Despite what one would assume, Esmerelda and Malachai are not enemies. They have been friends since the Beginning, and even lovers in a sense. They were the first two beings to exist (apart from the Creator) and so grew incredibly close over the eons that they've known each other. They are asexual, sexless beings (though they each choose to present as a particular gender) and they love each other in the way one would love someone they've known since the beginning of time. Esmerelda is Malachai's respite and Malachai is Esmerelda's inspiration.
In the beginning of time, Esmerelda and Malachai were brought into the universe as nothing but two souls, two beings without a physical form. After a couple decades simply existing together, the first real task given to Esmerelda from the Creator was to craft vessels for them both, and so Esmerelda sculpted both the physical forms they take (in her mind, Malachai's face is the most beautiful thing she's ever made, but she'd never tell anyone that). In the early days, their Temples were nothing but shacks, empty apart from their Altars, but as civilization grew, so did their following and the host of Gods that came into being. Esmerelda's Temple grew into a white marbled palace, open and bright, flowers and plant foliage brimming from every available space, while Malachai's Temple became a tall, gothic building, dark and looming with high spires (Malachai, of course, despised this. He would have much preferred something like Esmerelda's Temple, but there was nothing he could really do about it). Since the start, Esmerelda was always the most beloved God by far, whereas Malachai was revered on the basis of an unfounded terror rather than respect.

What software do you use? :)
I use ibispaintx on my phone! It's free and really good once you find your way around the app. You can pay a subscription for some added features but the app is perfectly fine without it. Goes to show you don't need some 100 quid software to make cool digital art :)

I tried to make Malachai as angular and sharp as possible in this drawing.
Tumblr media
Here I was just trying to play with light in a more simplified way :) Before my art style switch I'd have like 6 layers for shadows and highlights so in this drawing I really tried to simplify it and pushed it down to just 2

Some doodles I made of these guys today :)
These two are characters I've been working on for a good while - Esmerelda Goddess of Life and Malachai God of Death :) They're sort of the base characters for a new storyline/universe of ocs

Why I disagree with the Good Omens s2 coffee theory
!! Good Omens Season 2 spoilers !! I want to start off by saying that this is no hate to the people that like this theory, this is just my own thoughts :) I want to really break down Aziraphale's conversation with the Metatron in particular. I think there's tons of evidence in this conversation that shows Aziraphale wasn't mind controlled or anything, but just very well manipulated. In this scene, the Metatron speaks in absolutes, saying things like "you're just the angel for the job", which is giving him validation, from someone right at the top of the hierarchy, no less. However, Aziraphale's reply, "I don't want to go back to Heaven", is interesting as he stutters then immediately looks away, then makes a joke about the coffee to ease the uncomfortable tension. But, the Metatron continues to talk and completely ignores what Azi has just said, ''You know, as supreme archangel, you would be able to decide who to work with". Again, he's speaking in absolutes and is only offering him the option of becoming supreme archangel. The Metatron doesn't even give time to the thought that Aziraphale doesn't want this, because by acknowledging that, he'd give Azi time to think about it more, which would lessen his chances of being able to persuade Aziraphale to come back. I think that alone really shows how he's subtly influencing Aziraphale's choice here, not from mind control, but masterful manipulation. The Metatron carries on by saying, "Yeah, I've been looking over a number of your previous exploits, and I see that in quite a few of them you formed a de facto relationship with the demon Crowley." He's giving Aziraphale nowhere to hide by bringing Crowley up, and this is clearly an attempt to make Azi feel guilty and feel like he needs to redeems himself somehow by painting his actions in a subtly negative light. After this, Aziraphale very quickly breaks eye contact after staring at him very intently, possibly out of shame or because he was thinking about Crowley. However, the Metatron immediately gets his attention back, not allowing him any time to think, "Now, if you wanted to work with him again, that... might be considered irregular but it would certainly be within your jurisdiction to restore your friend, Crowley, to full angelic status". He's reminding Azi that what he's doing is 'wrong' to make him feel guilty, but then offering him exactly what he's wanted - Not specifically for Crowley to be an angel again, but for the two of them to be able to be happy together without any kind of shame or judgement. Additionally, he refers to Crowley as Aziraphale's friend, which reinforces that him being restored would make him more than just some demon and attempts to give the impression it would be positive for the both of them. The Metatron is also offering Azi power to have actual control over his relationship with Crowley, which would be another thing that could tempt him into agreeing. Crowley is his biggest weakness and the Metatron used this weakness to manipulate him, knowing full well that Aziraphale wouldn't put himself first. The entire conversation structure was essentially 'you did this how dare you, but you can make it better by doing this'. He was lured into accepting through manipulation, not mind control. In regards to the infamous kiss scene, I do genuinely believe that Aziraphale's reaction wasn't due to mind control - but shock. It was the wrong place and wrong time and it was such a painfully human moment, but that's a whole other topic of discussion. But, yeah! That's just my analysis of that scene, and if I turn out to be wrong, at least I had fun HAHA

My thoughts on the meaning of life
This is the kind of thing that humans have been puzzling over for eons, and really there is no answer to the question 'what is the meaning of life?', and for a lot of people that can be really daunting. But, really, I think the highly existential and pessimistic view towards the fact that there is no inherent meaning is all wrong. I'd like to focus on the phrase 'we're just small and insignificant', as it's something that I take issue with. This statement is only partially true. Yes, we're really quite small in our infinite universe, but we aren't in any way insignificant. On an individual scale, I don't think anyone is insignificant. Everyone makes some kind of impact, whether it be on the world or someone you pass on the street. There is really no such thing as a person that 'doesn't matter'. When looking at this in terms of the human race, we're really quite unique. Space and the universe around us is ever changing, even if it's very slowly by our standards. The point is, space is not stagnant and space is inhospitable. However, in our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago, a planet with water formed right in the goldilocks zone and managed to stay generally unharmed just long enough for us to evolve. Humans as a species are so incredibly improbable, yet here we are. We are so rare, and I find a lot of comfort in that. We are small on our little planet, but we are unique and we are special. There may be no grand or absolute meaning to life, but I think our existence alone should be enough, no? If you focus on an end goal, you'll miss the journey itself - and that's the bit that really matters. I believe that instead of scrambling to create an ultimate meaning to life, we should just appreciate it for what it is. The fact that we're alive at all is good enough meaning for me.
