Some very kind words about the Ashenspire performance from North of the Wall last month, in an extremely well written and grounded article. Well worth your time.

Thomas Karlsson - The Qliphothic Tunnels, “Qabalah, Qliphoth and Goetic Magic”, 2009. Twenty-two tunnels, dark counterparts of the twenty-two tunnels on the Sephiroth, pass between the ten Qliphothic worlds. The tunnels have been known under different names, such as Schichirion, which means ‘black’ or Necheshiron, which means ‘snake-like’. The names of the tunnels used in the illustrations above are those which have been most commonly used by contemporary western dark magicians and were published in 1977 in ˝Nightside of Eden˝, the Qabalistic classic by Kenneth Grant. The names of the tunnels also denote those entities that rule the tunnels, in the same way that Lilith and Samael are both Worlds and Demons. The paths and the tunnels are thought to correspond to Tarot cards and Hebrew letters in various ways. Kenneth Grant has based his correspondences on the Tarot, as developed by Aleister Crowley. In this system, the Emperor corresponds to the path that extends between Netzach (or the Qlipha A’arab Zaraq) and Yesod (Gamaliel), while the Star extends between Chokmah (Ghagiel) and Tiphareth (Thagirion). The system that is represented above is based on an older and more traditional placement in which the two examples above are exchanged. Thus, the cards and the paths follow the chronological pattern around the tree with the first cards at the top and the lower ones further down.

A. T. Mann - Twelve Esoteric Mandalas with corresponding Signs of the Zodiac, 1975. Aries: (21 March - 20 April) - Stone circles built approximately 2400 BC. Attributed to Atlanteans, Phoenicians, Druids, Romans, Giants, Queen Boadicea, and Merlin. Its geometry suggests its use as an astronomical observatory and spiritual centre. Taurus: (21 April - 20 May) - The Great Pyramid of Giza. Astronomic temple and stone monument built approximately 2170 BC. Served as burial chamber for the Pharaoh Cheops, and also functioned as an initiation temple, astronomical observatory, calendar determinant, and as a standard for ancient Egyptian surveying, weights and measures. The square and circle determine its form, location, and the position of its passageways and internal chambers. Gemini (21 May - 20 June) - A memory theatre, Vitruvius, Palladio, Dee, Fludd. The classical Greek Amphitheatre described by Vitruvius was an image of the world. The four equilateral triangles inscribed within a circle also reflect the Zodiac. Palladio’s 1567 reconstruction is here adapted to the magical ideas of Dr. John Dee and Robert Fludd. The memory art produced a specific correlation between the audience, actors, and sets which was probably used in the Globe Theatre of Shakespeare.  Cancer (21 June - 21 July) - Jambudvipa World Diagram, Jaina Cosmos. This schematic representation of the Universe shows the regions through which the individual passes in approaching his liberation at the center, Mount Meru. The positions upon the diagram are the layers of space, time and matter which determine our fates, and indicate the proper actions necessary for release. Leo (22 July - 22 August) - Figura Intellectus, Magicosmic Mnemormandala. Based upon a diagram by Giordano Bruno in 1588, this meditation figure synchronizes the operations and structure of the mind with the divine astrological order of the Cosmos. It provides a matrix for information which indicates their magical correspondences and permutations.  Virgo: (23 August - 21 September) - Sri Yantra, Hindu Tantric Yantra. The divine powers and their interrelationships are shown as linked triangles surrounding the mysterious matrix point in the center. The lack of images allow the initiate to distill and concentrate his being in preparation for unification with the Godhead. Libra (22 September - 21 October) - I Ching, squared and encircled. Ancient Chinese oracle from the Second Millenium BCE, the I Ching Book of Changes is a divinatory system based upon the permutations of positive and negative energies in nature and man. The sixty-four hexagrams are transitional states which are shown around a circle and within a square. Scorpio:  (22 October - 20 November) - Tibetan Buddhist Mandala, Mahakala Gonpo-Magpo Chakra. Mahakala, the Great God of Time, dances with his female consort within the sacred precinct of the four  elements. This eternal lovemaking dance symbolizes the recurrent Creation and Destruction of the Universe by the powers of Time.  Sagittarius: (21 November - 20 December) - Aztec Calendar Wheel, Precious Fire Serpents. The Sun disk is both a calendar and a historical-mythological record of the Aztec Indians. The Sun is the center and is surrounded by four seasons and eras, twenty day names, penetrating rays, and two great fire snakes recalling the Cosmic Energies.  Capricorn: (21 December - 19 January) - Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Kabbalah is the mystical system of the Jews and the Tree of Life is a graphic system of classification used in conjunction with it. The ten spheres are the pure numbers and the twenty-two paths connecting them correspond to the letters in the Hebrew alphabet, the whole being capable of leading the initiate from the  ignorance of Malkuth at the bottom to the Crown of Kether at the top.  Aquarius: (20 January - 18 February) - Astrology and Cosmic Geometry. The most ancient science based upon the correspondence of the Cosmos and man. Originally it included astronomy, medicine, mathematics, geometry and psychology, and underlies most religious systems in history. The structure of astrology is the relationship between the circular movements of planetary bodies and the squares and triangles which subdivide them.  Pisces: (19 February - 20 March) - North Rose window, Chartres Cathedral. This rose window displays the principles of Christianity through images of the Virgin held by her Mother, surrounded by the Doves of the Spirit, the Kings of Israel, and the Twelve Prophets. The mysteries of the Church are transmitted by the images and geometrical relationships to both the simple and the wise.

In any circumstance you have a choice. Too choose not to do something is also a choice. The gods who infused us with consciousness understood that humans probably would make mistakes and misuse their free will; and so it is that the choices we have made have led us to our current precipice. We still have the choice to respond with compassion or with anger or fear, and no one can take that choice away from us. How you choose to respond, in essence, determines your karma, and as we can see every time we turn on the television or pick up a newspaper, the repercussions are vast and in many cases devastating. Your actions will not necessarily keep a bad thing from happening to you - it is your resistance to the event that causes the suffering. Loved ones will still die; we will still have accidents and experience problems with money - those are facts of life. However your ability to accept whatever situation comes your way allows you to create a reality that you might prefer even as negative circumstances touch you. You are not necessarily responsible for what happens around you, only for your reactions - or lack thereof.

Art is the propulsion method, the affector. Culture is an accretion, a stabilisation mechanism and mode of defence against the High Strangeness because we intuitively understand that there’s a very real risk we might get torn apart by it. What’s popular is often so diluted that it often has only the tiniest morsel of it left, because anything more would threaten stability. The task then, is to mine, to dig, to follow the signs through and beyond the popular – run the risk of getting lost in the rainforest, dying of dysentery and snake’s poison.
