You can train your tastes. You can choose what you see beauty in.
Lemme go further, actually. You are constantly doing so--or letting others do it for you.
Nearly two decades ago, when we were planning our wedding, I made a very firm decision not to look at any wedding planning magazines or anything with marketing material for wedding products. I wanted our wedding to be uniquely us, and I also wanted not to be bombarded by product advertisement and beautiful photo shoots of very expensive weddings. Consequently, maybe we wasted a little bit of time reinventing the wheel, but we had a wedding we were very happy with that only cost perhaps four thousand dollars at most, probably not that much, spread out over our finances and those of both our families. Our guests went home with live potted plants that we'd paid pennies for at end of season, our florist had a great time getting to design a bouquet that tested her skills because I didn't have any preconceived ideas, my dress was utterly unique--and I really do feel that those magazines would have had a corrosive effect on all that.
When we moved to this property three years ago, I spent a LOT of time looking at images online, trying to form a coherent vision for a property that was at the time a fairly blank slate. I found myself scrolling through a lot of Russian dacha Instagrams, of all things, and they unlocked something for me. Seeing the same homey make-do decorations and techniques I grew up around a continent away, the same plywood cutout old ladies and tractor tire flower planters, somehow chewed through that last binding cord of classism, and suddenly I saw the art in it. The expression of a desire to embellish and beautify, even when you have very little, even when all you can afford is things the more well-to-do consider trash. I saw the exuberance of human love for beauty in a brilliant flower bed planted next to a collapsing shed--it didn't need to be perfect to be worthwhile. They didn't wait til everything was pristine to start enjoying things. And now I earnestly and unironically covet my own version of the tractor-tire Christmas tree at the farm down the road.
We've spent centuries now idolizing the manicured estates and quaint country retreats of the European wealthy elites. We've turned thousands of miles of living ecosystem into grass deserts in service of this vision. We need to start deliberately retraining our tastes. Seek out images of a different idea of beauty and peace. I'm not telling you what it'll be. I'm telling you this is not involuntary. You can participate. You can look at the many beautiful examples of native xeriscaping for arid climates, or photos of chaotic tangles of wildflowers, tamed by narrow paths, a bench under an arbor overwhelmed with wisteria. Maybe instead of trying to get lawn to grown under your mature trees, you'd actually get far more joy out of a patch of dirt. A hammock. A firepit ringed with log sections for seats.
You can free yourself from harmful conventions of taste and beauty, and you do it through imagining something better.

I love how in Dune part 2, they made Chani literally the voice of Franks Herbert, deeply suspicious of governments, charismatic leaders and organized religion and prophecy, she has to watch all that she feared would shackle her people come to bind them with the chains held by the very person she trusted and loved and who promised her he didn't want to be a leader, and then a bunch of guts on the Internet call Chani, "a stuck up, pouting, over dramatic teen," Sir, that is your author avatar.

Leto II and Ghanima as twins is an absolute tragedy.
Here is Leto and his sister. They were born together. They share the same ancestral memories. The only other person like them, their aunt, is being driven insane by her own ancestral memories, and she is trying to make them both end up like her. Their mother is dead, their father is gone, and their grandmother left the planet before they were born and does not return to see her grandchildren until they are nine years old.
They grow up together. They talk together in dead languages.
They are trapped together. They are raised as the children of an Emperor father who walked out on them the day they were born. Their carer, Stilgar, occasionally contemplates killing them because he is afraid of what they are. Their grandmother's people want to force them to marry each other and have children together, and they are horrified by this. They love each other, but not that - never that.
The sister of their father's wife - the wife he never loved, the wife who is not their mother but committed herself to raising them - plots to have them killed. They know the only way to survive is to separate.
They have never been apart before.
By the time they reunite a year later, their father has just been murdered. Their aunt immediately kills herself in front of them. Leto Atreides II, aged ten, is the Emperor of most of the universe, and he is no longer human. He will never be alike to his sister again. He will live for thousands of years. He is fond of children - he will never have children of his own.
He runs until he exhausts himself and then he puts his head in his sister's lap and asks her to find a way for him to die.
Ghanima dies first. Spice extends her lifespan, but she dies two centuries later.
Leto will live another 3,300 years without his twin.
3,500 years into Leto's reign, Ghanima's descendant steals Leto's Journals and finds between the pages a strand of Ghanima's hair, a pressed flower that Ghanima once gave Leto, and a poem that Leto wrote when he was told that Ghanima had died.
Siona, descendant of Ghanima, realises how much Leto Atreides II loved his sister, and views it only as a weakness to be exploited.

Luke Skywalker who was bullied and called “wormie” and had a tense relationship with Owen and was lonely af, but who worked his ass off on the farm and was nice to people and dropped everything to help a stranger in need simply because they were in need anyway.
Luke Skywalker who was frustrated and impatient and chomping at the bit, but who took deep breaths and heard his mentors out but still did what felt right to him and went to save his friends even though he knew he was putting himself in danger by leaving before his training was done because they were his friends and he had to help them, there was no other option in his mind.
Luke Skywalker who lost the shining knight image of his father, his hand, his trust in his mentors, and his sense of identity all in one blow, but still went to the window to comfort Leia as Lando and Chewie left to look for Han anyway.
Luke Skywalker who had clearly learned a lot and become very powerful all on his own and blew up a crime lord’s palace to save his friends, but who went back to Dagobah to complete his training anyway because he thought “there’s always room to improve.”
Luke Skywalker who laughs at tiny teddy bears trying to arrest him and just hands his lightsaber over to them and is just chilling, absorbing everything while he’s tied up and pulling some harmless Force tricks while still perpetuating the idea that C-3PO is a god cuz it’s just too damn funny and he won’t be the one to shatter the Ewoks sense of how the galaxy works.
Luke Skywalker who comforts his sister even as he goes off to fight Vader and maybe die in the attempt (remember his line to the emperor “soon I’ll be dead and you with me,” man really thought he wouldn’t be coming back).
Luke Skywalker who was willing to cart Vader off with him to likely some remote corner of the galaxy and make up a plan as he went cuz he still loves his father and always believed he would come back to the light and just wanted a chance to be a real family.
Luke Skywalker who trusts in not only the Force, but connection, attachments, and himself.
This is my Luke Skywalker.

Made this awhile ago, but now that the sixth subclass has been revealed, I'm presenting my own. I honestly think we might get a sixth/final darkness element, but I also don't work at bungie so I really don't know.

As much as it's tempting to get on TFS hype train, I'm going to have to wait until the game itself comes out. Remember kids: hope clouds observation.

list of mundane things that feel like ancient human rituals
cleaning or wipe your bare feet
breaking off a piece of bread and handing it to someone
putting the weight of a basket on your hip or head
eating nuts or berries while hunched over close to the ground
seeing something startling just out of your line of sight and very quickly stepping or leaping on to a larger object to get a better view
cupping your hands into running water to wash your face
the unanimous protection of a baby or child in a public space where women are present
when an elderly woman laughs and grips your forearm tightly
