dear language learners
- disorganisation is okay
- mess is okay
- you don’t need to study 8 hours a day for your efforts to have merit
- colours other than pastels are okay
- it’s fine you don’t own a macbook or study in starbucks or have perfect nails
- watching a trashy soap opera in your target language is just as much an exercise as reading classical literature
- it is okay not to fit into that elitist circle it is okay not to fit that aesthetic it is okay that you don’t have the money or the time to colour-code a minimalist apartment with So Much Natural Light
- your efforts and achievements are valid regardless of your aesthetic

writing adult emails is awful
its like
hi [name of person],
this formatting is making me uncomfortable but I have to tell you something / ask you something that is vital to my career as a student.
I re-read and edited that sentence for an hour, but you’ll probably just glance over it for half a second.
thanks!

a spread I made for fun of tiny pleasures (little moments that make me happy) and my first two spreads for the month of march. I’m loving this larger journal size, it allows me to be so much more creative!

hello!! it’s been a while since i’ve made a post like this, and i hope too many people haven’t done this one exactly, but whatever. getting started on essays is always daunting so if you use this as a way to guide yourself and get everything together it might be useful!
pre-writing phase:
sticky notes
colored pens
highlighters/markers/colored pencils
lots of paper
actual essay writing phase:
computer
google docs
snacks and water. always.
a good playlist
look here
optional: a quiet place
a comfy spot w good lighting
sit up, but make sure you’re comfortable
room for all your physical papers/readings/books/etc.
comfy clothes
a neat writing space (choose ur fave)
zenpen - very simple and easy to use, website
calmly writer - very similar to zenpen, website
quiet writer - everything you write is immediately saved, you can change the background color too - chrome extension
qwertzen - simple with character count, average reading time, and customization - chrome extension
raven - specifically for novelists, but works well for whatever you want. minimalistic with nice organization - desktop download
writed - very simple and cute - mac app
writers block/cold turkey writer - very very very minimalistic and easy to use, you literally cannot exit until you’ve reached your goal if you choose to set one (can be set by time or word count) - app for windows and mac
more sticky notes/paper, preferably a different color (or use the commenting feature w/ whatever writing program you’re using, but i find physical sticky notes more appealing bc i’m more likely to remember to do whatever it is if it write it down)
> 45 minutes
at least one break (i.e. walking, running, yoga, tidying, etc.)
post writing phase (hopefully the day after):
< 30 mins
a fun snack/drink, you deserve it.
a printer, not necessary but they’re helpful when re-reading because you can make physical notes/marks on the sheet
an editing site (i recommend using at least one)
grammarly - for mostly grammar mistakes, obviously
paper rater - proof reading for grammar and spelling, also gives feed back on sentence structure, vocab level, and more.
**slick write - gives feedback on sentence structure, formatting, word variety and more - website but there’s also a downloadable option
**hemingway editor - more stylistic, sentence structure, word choice advice (also a desktop app available)
a quiet place to read ur essay aloud (this helps w/ fluidity, organization and grammar)
image credit - hope this is helpful!! xox annie

How I Make Notecards! :)
After my post about notecards and midterms, a lot of you guys sent me messages about how I make them, what kind of cards or rings I use, etc. Soooo, without further ado…
Tumblr media
I’ll be using my Chemistry notecards as an example since they’re probably the most well done AND they’re even color coded!
STEP 1: Gather materials (that sounds really science-class-procedure-y)
Tumblr media
I personally use unruled index cards from Target (they’re like $0.49 per pack and really good quality) and two different writing utensils…usually some sort of marker and then my trusty Pilot G2. I like for my notecards to be on a ring (good for storage but I take them off when I’m quizzing myself), so I’ll need one of those and a hole punch (mine’s Swingline and I LOVE it).
STEP 2: I make a list of what I need on my notecards and then start labeling the front side of the index cards. My Chemistry notecards are just material from my 1st semester, so I make them as I go along, but you can make them all at once too! (wouldn’t really recommend it, it ends up being really time consuming)
Tumblr media
STEP 3: Once I’m done labeling the front side with concepts such as Molarity, questions like “What is an aqueous solution?,” diagrams like Solids VS Liquids VS Gases on a molecular basis, etc., I go back to actually write out the content on the back of the cards. I define words, copy practice problems, draw diagrams, and the like.
Tumblr media
STEP 4: When all the notecards are done, I break out a pack of colored notecards to act as divider pages. I have a color-coding guide:
Tumblr media
STEP 5: Since my notecards are for the entire 1st semester, I take some plain white notecards to use as dividers for different chapters. For this, I cut up a small sheet of paper or an index card, fold it in half, and tape it to the right edge of the card, so that it acts as a tab.
Tumblr media
STEP 6: After all that is done, I punch holes in the upper left corner and put them on the ring so that the order isn’t messed up (my Chem notecards are actually numbered though, so it’s not an issue)
STEP 7: Then I make my cover! I like this part the most. I cut out a piece of scrapbook paper so it’s 3in X 5in, and I punch a hole in the upper left corner. I tape a sticky note that’s been folded in half on the center (if the paper has a subtler pattern you can just write directly on it) and I use a marker/pen to write the class and/or subject.
STEP 8: Finally, put that on the ring and then you’re done! I flip through my notecards before major tests to get a brief overview of the content before going to my notes/the textbook, or I take them off the ring to quiz myself. Study them however you’d like :)
Tumblr media
This was my first tutorial-y post…I hope I helped and answered your questions!

I think Staying Focused is one of the most difficult things about studying, especially when you need to study for a long time, for big exams, etc. Here’s some ways I’ve found helpful and seen other people use.
Set a Goal
This was one for the first techniques I used and it still helps me to this day.  Setting a big or goal of what you want to achieve, long time or short time.
Setting Bigger Goals Setting a big, long-term goal, like getting into college or achieving a really good result on something that you struggle with. For these kind of goals you need to plan out how exactly you’re going to achieve what you want. To do this, it’s best to set yourself smaller goals, which will lead up to you achieving the bigger goal.
Setting Smaller Goals You need to make smaller goals easy to reach. These could be like going up a grade, getting a certain grade on an assignment,  spending a certain amount of time studying. You need to make sure these goals have a good mix of attainable and challenging. This way they’ll benefit you by keeping you motivated.
Rewards.  Achieving big goals is usually a reward in but to keep you motivated you  may need rewards to do keep trying to yourself wanting to achieve your goals. Set yourself up some little goals along the way. Perhaps buying something, going to see a movie, watching tv, etc. There’s numerous amounts.
Use an App
Apps are so helpful, here are some of my favourites:
Pomodoro This app is so amazing for helping to stay focused. It’s a timer with breaks after each time slot with a break after 4 Rounds. It also has a goal of what you want to achieve that day.  It helps because although you may b looking forward to getting a break, you’ll also be working. It also has a ticking noise which can aid you to keep focused or you can turn it off it annoys you.
Focus Timer If you find yourself always picking up your phone, this app is perfect because it keeps you off your phone while timing your study. It also lets you keep a chart so you can track how much you study.
30/30 This is app is a To-Do List and Timer all in one and is super useful to help you if you want to specifically time what you have to do. It works really well with a lot of alerts to keep you working.
Focus Now This app is the free version of Forest, which I’ve seen a lot of people use in the community. It keeps you off of your phone because if you exit off you’ll kill the plant that grows while you’re not on your phone.
Listen to Music
This is not for everyone but it can work well for a lot of people! Try out different genres and stick to ones without lyrics as these are generally the best for keeping you focused.
Classical Music - popular choice with studyblrs
Instrumentals - another popular choice, very focusing and soothing
Video Game Soundtracks - these are literally made for keeping you focused so these are great!!
Instrumental Movie Soundtracks - some of these are also made to keep you focused and drawn in. (The Theory of Everything one is so good!!)
Electric Sounds - works well if you dislike classical!
Natural Noises - keeps your mind from getting distracted by blocking out silence
Coffee Shop Noise - proven to help you be more creative and keep focused
Some good masterposts with lists for study sounds:
Melodic Studying
Study Sounds
Study Music
Study Order
Study order is something we usually forget about but it’s actually super important!
Do a quick/creative or subject that you like first. It will get you focused and in the mood to start with.
Move into a difficult subject or one you find hard to focus during. You’ll still be focused and motivated from the first task but not tired or bored.
Finish on an easy or quick task. It’ll leave you feeling satisfied with the work you completed and even though you’ll be tired/less focused from previous tasks you’ll be able to do it efficiently if it’s and easy topic for you!
Have Something that Reminds You to Study
Very often we get sidetracked by something else which can break our focus. Instead have something that will constantly remind you to study or why you’re studying.
An Cheerful Alert on your Phone. It may sound cheesy but it can help you keep your phone down and get your work done.
A Inspirational Quote/Picture that reminds your why or what you’re studying for. It’ll keep you motivated as well as focused.
A To-List. Placed in a visible spot so you can keep in mind what you have done and what you still have to do.
A Bullet Journal. It works well for keeping you focused on your study as it’s an analog system and you’ll have to force yourself to mark the work as completed/uncompleted therefore keeping you more motivated and focused on the work you have to do!
A Planner - works well for informing you of what you have to study, if you would prefer more structure than a bullet journal ,a planner will work well for organising your days. @passionplanner has free planner printables, if you’d prefer not to invest in a planner fully yet!

DEAR FRENCH COMMUNITY, LISTEN UP!
If you’re studying french, or in french immersion like I am, here are some tips + resources I’ve found helpful throughout my five years of immersion. Commençons!
1. IT’S ACTUALLY OKAY TO USE GOOGLE TRANSLATE: Wait, what? I know it’s 100% against what your teachers have been telling you since forever. Mais c’est actuellement trés précis. Now, I’m not saying you should just copy and paste your english draft into google translate, copy the french translation and be done with it. That would be bad. Don’t do that, mauvais élève. Rules of using google translate:
-only use it for single words/short sentences
-double-check it in BonPatron
which leads us to:
2. USE BONPATRON: Probably my favorite french grammar site ever. The link is here. You paste your text into the text box and it corrects/ points out any errors for you. I’ve been using it forever, trust me. It has saved my ass more than a few times.
3. USE WORDREFRENCE: Another of my faves. It’s basically the virtual version of the classic french/english dictionary. Link is here!
4. DON’T IGNORE ACCENTS!: when I was in 7th grade I decided accents were a pain and that they didn’t make a difference anyways, so I just completely disregarded them. Worst mistake ever! Accents completely change the word! For example, ou and où have two different meanings! I know they’re a pain and can be confusing, especially if you’re typing on a computer without a french keybord. This brings us to:
5. USE THIS SITE FOR FRENCH ACCENTS ON YOUR COMPUTER: It’s a site that allows your to copy and paste french accents into your word document.
Well, that’s it. Bon chance avec ta français! Please reblog this, I worked really hard on it!
