this is the "version" of Lucifer i reference and aim for. here are some more facial expressions he makes when he has a similar face and eye shape that i also reference

for his face shape, usually i go for a fairly round face and pointy chin. (the last screenshot on the right, where he looks distressed, his face doesn't curve so much because his mouth is lower and pulling his face shape down)

for his eyes, i think of their inner corners as being slightly lower than the outer corner, so if you were to draw a line from point to point, there would be a very very slight slant upward

(these i drew myself: wide eye and resting/tired eye) that's what i've got to post to tumblr for now! :3

a silly screenshot edit i made of one of my favorite moments :)

...because i organized my bank accounts and wanted to give one of my cards a special cover!!

a brief note about applying the sticker to the card: the directions said to line up the sticker to the opening for the chip, but it went better for me when i lined the sticker up to one of the long sides of the card. (but of course make sure the sticker would be in the right part for the chip)

bonus behind the scenes on my making the pic under the cut :)

i tend to make several lineart layers when doing REALLY CLEAN lineart so i can more easily erase overlapping lines. (the first screenshot has lines that "overshoot" because that gives nice sharp corners and line width variety, but i need to erase the extra parts of the lines)

(i like these screenshots because Lucifer looks extra clowny with this colorfulness)

i realized on this project, since the final lineart is just going to be black anyway, that i can use different colors for each layer and then LATER make the lineart black. (realized it after already making some lineart, so you see some black here)

SO, RIGHT. VERY EASY TO THEN GET BLACK OUTLINES: JUST SET BRIGHTNESS TO ZERO. i usually use a program called FireAlpaca, and the way you do that there is: Filter > Hue… > drag the Brightness cursor all the way to the left

in this screenshot, you can see some of the effects i added to Lucifer to give him the nice shadowed look that Hazbin Hotel has, as well as where i covered Charlie at the tip of Lucifer's hat lol

i included my layers on the right of the screenshot to show how i set up the outline layers in the final version: as you saw above, i named my outline layers with the color used for them, then, once i was done with the outline, i placed the "outline before color change" folder above the base black "outline" folder. that way, if i later notice a mistake, i can simply turn on the colored outline folder and i'll see what color that part of the outline is and jump to the necessary layer, rather than going on a quest turning off and on a bunch of layers each time

since i duplicated my outline folder before changing the outlines in one of them to black, the base outline folder already has the color names included in the layer names

NOT ALL DIGITAL ARTISTS USE AS MANY LAYERS AS I DO LOL. I GO WILD WITH THEM SOMETIMES. MANY OF MY PROJECTS HAVE WAY MORE THAN 80 OR EVEN 500 LAYERS. people just tend to figure out what works for them. i wouldn't be surprised if i end up using fewer layers in the future. or a lot more. or go either way depending on the project

so, yeah, this is a screenshot edit, so i traced the main part of Lucifer's body. for the background, i used two screenshots. had to cut together and cover some stuff. here's the two screenshots unedited followed by a scribbled version to make things work lol and then the scribbled version that includes some extra touch ups/covers

and some screenshots i took while working on this, when i unexpectedly got some cool-looking versions :3 first one reminded me of Day of the Dead looks (he DOES need to be more colorful to be more accurate) and the second is just rad

ANYWAY probably the most helpful thing to most people would be the colored outline thing talked about at the start lol, the stuff i bolded. that was IMMENSELY useful and i love black outlines more than ever XD

some more angles to answer a question some people might have, like "HOW DID YOU EVEN GET THOSE WINGS TO FIT ON HIS BODY" (a few people asked me that lol. or at least one person did. i think a second person--ANYWAY)

answer: curve the wings out A LOT away from the body and give them tiny bases

BONUS: I HAD TOO MUCH FUN AND FORGOT THE ASSIGNMENT WAS ACTUALLY TO CREATE A BUST (HEAD AND SHOULDERS), NOT A WHOLE BODY, AND I DIDN'T KNOW HOW PEDANTIC MY PROFESSOR WOULD BE, SO I MADE THIS VERSION TOO

i wish i remembered to include his collarbone and some neck muscles. it would have been even more cursed

(more bonus info: i'm new-ish to the program we're using [ZBrush], so i didn't realize there's a torus -- a ring -- object i could have used for the halo. so i squashed a sphere and tried to cut a circle out from the center, but the program didn't cooperate. so i instead gave him a semi-halo thing lol)

an assignment in my 3D modeling class was to create two busts (head and shoulders) and spend two hours on them each.

we were allowed to even make fanart. so i. uh.

i got inspired by this art print

and i made a duck man.

"what if i add hair to the duck man"

I LAUGHED SO HARD. I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO WORK SO WELL

anyway here's the finished version. i hadn't planned on giving him his hair when i started, just the horns, halo, and clothes, but the hair REALLY WORKED, SO--

(this class, we're mainly using a program called ZBrush. highly discounted for students at participating schools, $10 for six months of access)

this class taught by my particular professor, the first few weeks' assignments were incredibly forgiving:

weeks 1 and 2 of getting an assignment was "four busts, spending one hour on each." (so, eight busts total in those two weeks)

weeks 3 and 4 of getting assignments was "two busts, spending two hours on each." (four busts total in those two weeks)

each week had a few different parameters, such as not using subtools or yes using subtools (a subtool is basically a separate "part" or "piece," like the hair, halo, and several other parts on this model), having the model's final resolution set at different levels, or using specific techniques the professor went over in class

but the MAIN GOAL of the assignments was to just get comfortable in the program. spend time in it so it hopefully won't be so scary

the professor EMPHASIZED, MULTIPLE TIMES, that he wanted us to stop at the one or two hour mark and not spend hours and hours making the models perfect. that, YES, the main goal was as said above, just to get comfortable, not to make masterpieces

i've failed multiple 3D modeling classes (i'm much more comfortable animating, which is making things actually move), and this is the first where we had assignments like this. it was such a relief. (this guy is seriously one of the best professors i've had, for any subject)

so yeah, there's a lot of stuff i'd like to change on this model, and it woulda been fun to include a little flame under the halo, but it's also nice to see what i did manage to get done, given the constraints.

(also, again saying that i've failed multiple 3D modeling classes. which means this is NOT my first time in this 3D modeling program lol. i may not have passed some classes, but i did get SOME practice in while taking them, and i did gain SOME understanding of what i'm doing. so, to anyone who may be struggling with this or similar programs, IT'S OKAY)

anyway, sharing what the professor assigned because it's a good mentality that helped me (especially with the assignments being so low stakes), and i hope it'll help other people too: just spend time getting used to new things. just get practice in! :)

I collected lots of fancy suits for reference, but then YouTube reminded me Jacques ze Whipper exists, and his outfits always rock

Day 7: Free day

Ever since shortly after the Hazbin Hotel season 1 finale, I've really wanted to make pancakes 'cause of Lucifer. Made cinnamon apple pancakes!

Some good tips I found: use buttermilk instead of milk and add some malt. :)

reblogging to my main blog because thanks for that commentary on the 'a grotesque romance' part of the title. wish i'd put together some sort of description to your effect :p

for anyone else interested in joining in the Invisible Man reading, we're still early in the book as i make this post in late March!

The Invisible Man, Ch. 1

Before I get into it, I want to make note of the full title of the story, The Invisible Man: A Grotesque Romance, which is a lot more enticing and evocative and leads to much more imagination for what happens. It implies something at least somewhat disturbing and fanciful, which fits well I think.

Anyways, here are random thoughts I had while reading the first chapter.

There's a lot of references to white objects: the snow, the serviette, his bandages, the muslin, it's all very pale. And the obvious connection is to Griffin's albinism, which doesn't get mentioned until much later (along with his name). If I had to analyze, all of these objects are there to obscure Griffin in some way. The snow covers him, he uses the bandages and serviette to hide his face, and the muslin helps block the view through the window. It's sort of taking the pale features that make Griffin stand out and which he now uses to hide himself, doubly so because his albinism was key to his invisibility.

Also, I had to look it up but a muslin is some sort of fabric which here is used as a smaller window curtain. Like so:

Moving on, the conversation between Mrs. Hall and Griffin about his bandages is just the beginning of all the gossip and rumors which will arise in the following chapters. One moment I like was this exchange:

“He was afraid, one time, that he’d have to have an op’ration—he was that bad, sir.” The visitor laughed abruptly, a bark of a laugh that he seemed to bite and kill in his mouth. “Was he?” he said.

Not only is it just a good line, but knowing what Griffin's own "operation" entailed meant that I laughed along with him at how "bad" scythe boy's accident was in comparison. But if you don't know and you're reading this for the first time, then it comes off as very rude. And Griffin is rude, but in this chapter he's also trying to be polite cause he's in need at the moment, so it's interesting to see the efforts he makes to do so and when it comes through.

Also, he pays two sovereigns (or two pounds) for his room, which is £213.93 today according to the Bank of England's inflation calculator.

Overall, the first chapter is very mysterious. If the book wasn't literally titled The Invisible Man, then we the reader would most likely be as curious as Mrs. Hall as to why this strange person was in bandages and acting so peculiar. I don't think we even see his invisibility until a few chapters in, so we're left hanging for a bit.

Finally, having watched the 1933 film before, I want to say that the first scene of that movie is very accurate to this chapter: Griffin continually staring out the window, pulling down the blinds, telling Mrs. Hall to leave the hat, Millie and the mustard, lines taken straight from the book, it's fun to notice! The film's on Internet Archive if people want to watch. Though be warned, it goes off-book in the very next scene.

renamed and redesigned my reverse AU Flug! instead of the Demencia character being the loose cannon of the White Hat Foundation, it's Dr. Gulf who's the chaotic one

hoping to share the designs of the other three characters soon-ish!
