❛ yep. can’t say even coffee makes me a mornin’ person, though. eh, i’ve just been keepin’ to myself lately. i guess i’ve been feelin’ under the weather. ❜
“Being up early’s not too bad. You get to watch the sunrise and it’s pretty. Plus the day feels a lot longer. Makes you feel more productive -- but this is from the person who has a hard time taking naps so I don’t know how true to word you should keep that.
Yeah? What’s up?”

CHRIS:
“I guess so, huh? That’s us, every day fucking heroes.”
Jill has a habit of bringing out the best of him. When the adrenaline and the drugs wear off, it’ll start to set in, but it feels a lot more manageable in her company.
“Next thing I know you’ll be making me breakfast in bed, which - actually - breakfast sounds about great right now.”
“Right up there with the CIA and FBI. Wonder why we don’t bring up promotions more often.”
She already knows the answer -- a combination of stagnation and them being happy where they are. A raise in pay, however, looks awfully tempting.
Chris is a map of dried blood and scraped and bruises. He’ll feel it soon, she knows, but it’s good to bask in him for the time being.
“It does, doesn’t it? There’s a new place that opened on main, couple blocks away from where we are. You could shower and take some stuff for the pain and we could sit down to eat.”

❛ good point. in the mornings you usually look better, it might be the coffee kickin’ in. ❜
“Wouldn’t bet on anything else. Fair to say that that’s the same for you, too?
Speaking of, I haven’t seen you around very much. Been keeping busy?”

looking back is easy for a while, then looking back gets murky.
It’s the curse of a survivor, you think, when Jill says that. You fight, you live, you move on - but you can never look back. The history of you, and the history of her, and the history of your partnership is one that is told through your bodies - the puncture scars on her chest that she’s been learning to come to terms with, the leathery texture of your skin as it grows back thicker each time. Sometimes you compare scars and stories. This one is from falling off your motorbike, this one from that time you got drunk in Arklay woods, and this one is from Wesker’s son (and it still sounds weird) almost shooting you in the face.
Looking back is easy when it’s brief. Conversations that consist of a single ‘remember when’ before the subject changes, and it always changes. Neither of you want to be the one to bring up ghosts, but you live in a house that you’re rarely in, and you both have boxes under the bed from better days.
You find it unfair that you met because of Forest, but he’ll never be there to make fun of you at the wedding (and you know there will never be a wedding, but sometimes you think of a better life where everything is easy, and all your friends are there).
It gets murky on the long nights of silence where you both sit on a side of the bed and don’t look at each other. Your hands shake and hers pick at her nails. You’ve both given your lives to the BSAA, but they never pulled through for you. You’ve never told Jill you were the only one looking for her, the only one who thought she was alive, but you know she’s smart, smarter than you, and she knows it anyway.
There’s three years of her life missing, and you can see it in her eyes when she talks. Thinking about the past means thinking about those three years, and you can’t imagine what horrors she’s been through. Only know of the ones you were beside her for.
Looking back means talking in past tense about people who should be here with you and stepping around the conversation until one of you says i guess we’re the lucky ones. You’re not. You don’t feel it. Your heart, like your home, is filled with ghosts.
You take her hands and kiss each of her fingers and know no matter how hard you try, she’ll always see them stained black.
Looking back hurts.
You can only look forward (but you know how this goes, how history repeats itself, and you know there’s no future for either of you.)
Jill smiles in the dark with her hands against your mouth.
You have to move forward.

CHRIS:
“I’ll go over the details later - it’s all a bit…heavy for now. Guess the point is we saved New York. Might be paying for collateral damage for a while on Nadia’s gun, though.”
It’s nice to be home.
“After this and Australia, I’m thinking maybe we should keep Rebecca a bit closer to home. Keep an eye on her - Oh, god, I’m becoming Barry, aren’t I?”
“Just like the movies -- saving New York means saving the world, right?
I heard. But I think we’re both guilty of that one way or another.”
He’s been away for a while.
“Yeah, for sure.” Then a brief laugh, breathy. “Always said we become like the people we’re close to. Guess you’re no exception to that.”

“Really, a better thing to ask is when I don’t look like that.”

“I will take that as a compliment, Jill.”
Odd to say that name, been too long.
“It has been a couple lifetimes since we last saw each other. What exactly have you been up to?”
“Good-- you should. Meant it to be, anyways.”
Even though she has a tendency for her words to be interpreted otherwise.
God, she looks like she never changed.
“Oh, you know. Trying to plan how to get through my meetings without slamming my face against the wall. And managing to run on coffee and toast with no lunch break. So -- luxury living, all in one go.
How’s your work been treating you?”

“That’s one way of putting it. Went better than it usually does which is…something. I’ll take what I can get.
I wouldn’t put it past you.”
A pause.
“Missed you.”
“I’ll call it a win right there.”
There’s a smile.
“You, too.”

“Been a rough week. Nice to be back. I take it you’ve been holding down the fort?”
“Bet it is. Heard you went through hell, but...I’d honestly gotta ask what level since you do it so often.
Oh yeah...got that moat built and everything. Door-to-door salespeople and Jehovah’s Witnesses? Really gotta think twice before thinking of knocking on the door now.”

Damn, though, how’s it been? Feel like it’s been more than a couple lifetimes since I last saw you.”
