I suppose i could work this into that "what am I here to see" post.
1. Your penwork is phenomenal and you work that into mechanical designs, on top of that you make them fluid instead of rigid which is just *chef's kiss*. In short im here for your machine drawings
2. Peaches the Daemon Engine is precious (I have a newfound love for Daemon Engines since starting a personal project)
Hey there! Didn't mean to forget to respond to this LITERAL MONTHS LATER but I was working on a response drawing, got too detailed with it, and then forgotti. Classic. (gonna give it its own post in a bit pff) But yes glad you enjoy the Machine Friends! Bringing the mechanical "to life" is like my entire schtick, so yes... it can be tough to make mechanical things feel like they are moving and running around in a "natural" way so I try to work a lot of energy into my sketches... I'm super glad when people pick up on that, especially with the less obviously humanoid/animalistic (zoomorphic?) ones where such expression is tougher to work with! Anyway, more Peaches for you, and some more in a wee bit haa:

Ohhh I sure do have some Thoughts about this one! I'll put it under a cut because this is a long stream-of-thought ramble ahead, with lots of pictures:
First, as for why there is so little scifi design/tech sampling the industrial design look of this era, this is just my assumption but the rounded smooth-tech look fits a bit into a funny place culturally: I think "cassette futurism" has a lot of that tech-nerd appeal since it still has a very engineered look, aesthetic covering is minimal and there isn't much exploration in the variety of materials used, which also makes it fit very well into the "gritty" flavor of sci-fi which really seems to dominate a lot of our culture/is what seems to be the bigger interest The smooth, colorful and rounded shapes of that 90s/2000s era has this bubbly optimism about it, which I think is at odds with what the "cultural preference" is in terms of what kinds of stories are usually told in scifi (lots of dystopian stories, and a lot of franchises that have their aesthetics rooted in the 70's and 80s which have stuck around ever since.) So this might be one factor, another is that a lot of the "futurist" stuff from this era is often seen as "objectively bad design" - specifically I'm thinking of concept cars here, there seems to be a lot of hate for the 90s "jellybean era" and the sometimes-awkward futurist look of the 2000s. I think why we give this era a tougher time vs the older, more boxy cars, is because it lives in this odd overlap of sculpting/obscuring a lot of the engineered aspects, so it starts to put it into a different spot in our minds in terms of perceptions: it is now more of a sculpture, a rolling sketch, and the constraints the engineering/packaging of these vehicles can limit a lot in that respect (rules about safety have also kicked in by now, so all the crazy shapes like the tailfins and sharp corners of older car designs are not something that can be explored anymore.) The disconnect of intent and execution probably tainted this era of industrial design aesthetics, at least for automotive, for a very long time. Anyway, I think there are honestly some Vibes to be pulled from that era, so add automotive designs/concept cars to your search list, handled right I think some of the from language could totally work "Jellybean era" cars (90s): Izuzu vehicross (I unironically kind of like these, it's such a rolling sketch. There is Potential here)

Additional mentions and thoughts: sure, the "translucent tech" craze is a very memorable aesthetic from this time, but I think there are more subtleties and common patterns to branch off this one We all think of stuff like this:
Tumblr media
..when I think the "common thread" of a lot of the 90;s tech, toys especially, as well as phones and handheld gadgets, generally had this "overbuilt" look to them. I think that's more the thread to follow, since the translucent thing is just one additional color/material/finish choice that happens to be on top of this underlying trend in the shapes

(Everything very rounded, but also kind of tough-looking. Also, colors!! Maybe super funky graphics are another angle to explore)

Anyway, bit of an early morning infodump haha, but I hope you find this useful or at least interesting! Def made me think about it too, because it's true you don't see a lot of work out there that is inspired from this era, and especially not in any big media that I'm aware of

The lore and story are good I promise

The whole explosion of AI “art” and all the virulent things people who have this weird concept of artists as greedy gatekeepers to be punished are saying on the topic and how they hope artists are replaced by it in all creative industries has really had the unforeseen effect of making me look and interact with my own art and other people’s art in a much more personal way.

Recently developed a liking for Kroma and Macabre thanks to their cool roles and designs (respectively the insanity of the latter).
Felt like drawing them doing their honest daily work.

Currently drawing a bunch of quick fanarts of the Death Drives from the Bravern anime and especially Vanitas. I hope you can excuse the robot goo, the anime inspired me and I like the color scheme :P

Finally got caught up on that funky Bravern show the other day and omg. It's so much fun. Have some scribblin' More yelling under the cut (and also mild spoiler alert if you haven't seen any of it:)
Loved seeing more of the other Deathdrives, even if they were kinda short-lived on-screen and all (guess that's what happens when a buncha story stuff needs to get compressed into just 12 episodes)
I'm enjoying the hell out of this silly show it's fucking BUCKWILD. I can't remember the last show that made me laugh this much I am just constantly chimpanzee screaming at the screen Wasn't super sure at first because I was a bit "???" about where this was going in the first few eps but oh my god. It's def become a fav now. It's for sure meant to be a parody of itself/commentary on the entire mecha anime genre and all the tropes that it's loaded with but then the story actually gets interesting too. The TWISTS. IDK it just seems like they had so much fun making this Also, sentient robot characters yippee! (That stuff just seems to be super rare, I've always kinda wondered why, but it's like the mecha genre is allergic to the concept unless you go full into Transformers territory (which is its own whole thing at that point.) Like idk maybe I'm the weird one for loving that idea, but I do wish more of that existed outside of the context of parody or "for little kids" or whatever. Anyway I'll take whatever I can get on that front. I'm adopting all of these idiots) Cupiridas is my fav, Extremely Silly Guy. Kunus (Cunus?) is completely off her shits but I actually love that super wingy design. Pessimism has some really cool silhouette nonsense going on, can def approve of straying from the usual humanoid look. I could throw in some sketches of the main mechs (Bravern, Superbia) but they already get most of the fan art, so I wanted to doodle some of the others..
