hello tumblr I is back.
I READ WHAT THE RIVER KNOWS AND OMFG.
major spoilers ahead obviously.
okay so firstly the last chapter from whit's pov. AND the epilogue. BOI HE IS GONNA BETRAY HER AND HOPEFULLY THEY'LL BE ALR IN THE END BUT STILL. like. it was a really weird pov to start with. why's his brother coming there? inez fell for it- tf is that supposed to me. who is the person he got his telegram from? WHO IS SHE??? his mother? his English bride to be? WHO? AND why did he propose to her so outta pocket. is it something to do with her inheritance that she can access only when she is married?
Elvira dying was so unexpected. like I did not see that coming. I thought they'll live and like something else would happen NOT THAT. like I thought maybe it'll be Ricardo who'll be really wounded but still alive- which did happen he was wounded but ELVIRA DIED. like that girl was so loyal to Inez and they were such good sisters. i was in shock for solid ten minutes like huh???? what just happened????
the next thing is INEZ'S MOTHER. a lying cheating b-tch I hope she gets what she deserves. and her father is he or is he not alive? will they meet him the next book? or is he truly dead and her mother had killed him with her lover (who is also dead).
on to our main character inez is so naive to believe people- she does this so easily and it's easily justifiable cause she's always been sheltered. she is reckless and curious and naive and has a really good heart. she trusted her mother easily- like not blaming her she didn't even know her own mother cause she never spent much time with her. she was a walking disaster. and she is now paying for consequences for her reckless actions like bad things ARE happening to her and she is realizing why they are. I still don't exactly understand why her uncle, ricardo is the way he is- like yeah he wants his niece to be safe but his niece is just BAM and then he cuts her off FROM HER OWN INHERITANCE cause he's protecting her from herself. and this girl isn't seeing this she wants revenge now which is really fun. she has so much potential for the next book istg I am sitting on edge waiting for it.
the romance was just awwwww istg. the bickering. all the moments where whit is just so done with this girl and amused cause inez is a little clown goblin who gets into trouble and he loves her for it. but but but. the last few chapters from whit's weird pov to when he proposes something is like really off. too may questions that are needed to be answered.
I cannot wait for the next book!!!!!

What The River Knows has me reeling over that ending. Like what???
MAJOR SPOILERS UNDER CUT
First of all, the death shocked me. I did not expect that to happen. I thought everyone was making it out alive and I was in pure shock for about ten minutes, full not processing what I was reading.
I think Whit is pulling a fast one on his family, I think. Per his strange final POV. Heās been cut off by his mother, Iām assuming? Who else would the She be who has finally cut him off completely? So he sends the telegram to Porter and says āhis plan is in motion, it just has to workā. Then he proposes.
But this brings up all sorts of questions - heās spent the entire book telling Inez not to trust him and that he only trusts his brother and sister. Leading me to think thereās some nefariousness with his parents.. perhaps his mother is a bit devious? Heās intentionally very mysterious.
Also, if he marries Inez, and I hope they go through with it, heās obviously going to ruin the betrothal to the secret, unrevealed fiancĆ©.
I am just all sorts of WTF about this but mainly excited for book 2.
Hereās some things were left with:
Porter is coming to see Whit, as planned by Whit? He intended for his brother to sail out with that telegram?
Whit is interested in alchemy, like Inezās mother. They are both looking for the same pamphlet/scroll but neither was able to find it
The mention of Nefertitiās tomb makes me wonder if she will be the next tomb weāre looking for in book 2
The mom is alive and missing, but the lover she had the affair with is dead
Thereās another big boss we donāt know about
That annoying dude still has Cleopatraās ring
Papa is still alive, Iām assuming. And now Inez has to find him
Wondering if there will be some second book romance shenanigans because of a betrayal ? I hope not. I want to see them grow their love, not create even more distance.

Literally all of The Shadowhunter Chronicle romances are completely unhinged itās not even funny (I lied, itās very funny). Hereās just some examples:

Gabriel Lightwood + Cecily Herondale: Look, you made fun of my sister, itās only fair that I marry your sister; thatās the rules.
Gideon Lightwood + Sophia āSophieā Collins: Dad, I have a perfectly valid reason to betray you and go to the other side. What your doing is wrong and ā nO tHiS haS nOThiNG to do wiTh tHeIR mAid wHy wOUlD yoU eVEn sAy tHat?
Jesse Blackthorn + Lucie Herondale: Your request to not be brought back to life has been denied, deal with it.
James āJamieā Herondale + Cordelia Carstairs: He didnāt commit arson we were just having sex ā why are you all looking at me like thatās worse?
Anna Lightwood + Ariadne Bridgestock: Listen, thereās a lot of society going on right now, so weāre going to have to get together in secret. Oh, you donāt want to? Okay, never mind, fuck society, let me win you back real quick.
Christopher Lightwood + Grace Cartwright: Oh good, you broke into my house, now we can talk about science.
Thomas Lightwood + Alastair Carstairs: Iād really like to hate you, but I think the biggest problem with that is that I love you. Once I get over that hurdle, I think weāll be in the clear.
Lucian āLukeā Graymark + Jocelyn Fairchild: Good job on us for breaking away from the genocidal cult run by our best friend/husband; we should hook up, you know, as a reward.
Jonathan āJaceā Herondale + Clarissa āClaryā Fairchild: Ayo the same guy conducted experiments on our blood, thatās crazy; btw so glad weāre not actually siblings.
Alexander āAlecā Lightwood + Magnus Bane: Marrying each other is against the law? Okay, fine, Iām a law biding citizen. Oh oops, I made it legal. I am the law now, and I want a wedding on the beach.
Simon Lovelace + Isabelle Lightwood: It makes sense to have our engagement party on the day of my brotherās death, thatās when we really started bonding.
Helen āAlessaā Blackthorn + Aline Penhallow: Well, I guess weāre going to go in exile together. Yes, I said together; your exile is my exile, whatās mine is yours and whatās yours is mine, thatās how relationships work.
Julian Blackthorn + Emma Carstairs: Yes, itās a technical war crime to love each other, but the law itself is not really our main concern about it.
Kieran Hunter + Mark āMiachā Blackthorn + Cristina Rosales: Weāre really living that cottage core aesthetic, and all we had to do to get here was do a small war and some amnesia. Worth it.
Gwyn ap Nudd + Diana Wrayburn: Iām going to stand by just in case something happens, but it probably wonāt, she knows what sheās doing ā WHY IS SHE JUMPING OUT THE TENTH STORY WINDOW OH MY GOD WAIT
Tiberius āTyā Blackthorn + Christopher āKitā Herondale: We take cosplaying Sherlock and Watson VERY seriously, so of course we needed to go to all the most illegal places, itās only natural.
Ash Morgenstern + Drusilla āDruā Blackthorn: So anyway I saw them in a sort of fever dream like state this one time and theyāve still been on my mind for years.
