how to keep your email inbox manageable!
This is what my inbox looks like right now. I haven’t cleaned it up at all, this is how it looks at 7:24 PM after a long school day.
Tumblr media
That’s right, I have a 4 emails. You may be thinking that I just don’t get any emails, but trust me, that’s far from the truth.
Here’s how I keep my inbox clean and organized. This is mainly for Gmail users.
1. Unsubscribe
Unroll.me is a site that allows you to unsubscribe to mailing lists, or add them to a daily digest. No more receiving daily spam from a site you only ordered from once.
Every morning I receive 1 email with the articles from the blogs I have subscribed to, so that they aren’t distracting me from pressing matters.
2. Archive
Tumblr media
This button is your best friend. It allows you to hide emails that aren’t pressing matters but you want to save in case you need the information later. They won’t show up in your inbox, but if you search for keywords they’ll show up.
3. Star
Tumblr media
In the settings, you can choose which stars you can use.
Tumblr media
Then click the little star outline next to the email to change between stars. I use three, the yellow star (for things to do), the red arrows (for things to reply to), and the blue “I” (for important information). That’s just my example though, I would recommend making your own for your specific needs.
4. Sort
My inbox has four sections (well, I’m only currently using two of them) - unread, starred, drafts, and everything else - all separated and stacked by priority. The way to get from the weird tab inbox to the version I use is pretty easy, just go to Settings>Inbox and select Priority Inbox.
Tumblr media
5. Themes
While you’re in settings, go to the Themes tab and make your inbox look nice! I set mine to a dark purple, you can choose from the theme gallery or upload your own custom image.
My policy for life is that if things look nice you’ll want to look at them, so make important things look nice.
6. Labels
You can even customize those tabs that are on the side of your Gmail! It’s in Settings>Labels
Tumblr media
7. Filters
You can star important things, delete spammy emails, and more, without even having to open your email. Just set filters! For example, I set one where any emails with “annoying thing” are deleted, and anything with “IMPORTANTIANO” is starred to show that it’s important. These aren’t real filters though, wouldn’t recommend using 0/10

15 things I tell myself when I don't want to work/study
1. You are very lucky and privileged to have access to almost unlimited knowledge and you should appreciate that. 2. Be one of those rare people who step over their insecurities and succeed. 3. Only 5 minutes. Only today. (Repeat it 5 minutes later and every day). 4. You will know what to do as soon as you start. Ideas never appear from inactivity. 5. Make yourself proud. 6. One hour every day doesn’t feel much but it’s 365 hours a year. You can’t not succeed after so much work. 7. It’s not supposed to be easy. Nothing good is easy. 8. If you had a child to look after, you’d make them study because you want them to accomplish something. Don’t you love yourself? 9. “Everything you want is on the other side of fear” George Adair 10. Every mistake increases our chance to make progress. 11. If you give up now, you’ll have to return to this later anyway but from the very beginning. 12. Let the process be your result. 13. Every moment you thought your fears would suppress you has become the time you made it. 14. Maybe you think you can never find something to use your skills and mindset for. But if you continue investing in what matters to you, it will find its way out there. 15. I allow you to think globally. You have a right to the boldest dream.

next time someone tells you Muslim countries oppress women, let them know Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, and Senegal have all had female Presidents or Prime Ministers and 1/3rd of Egypt’s parliament is female but the US has yet to even have a female vice president and can’t say “vagina” when discussing female reproductive rights

i was terrified of doing this in undergrad, and now that i’m asked to write them fairly often, i am fondly exasperated when my students don’t know how to ask for them. obviously there’s no single way, but here’s the way i usually do it.
THE FIRST EMAIL
should be short & should mainly be asking whether they’re willing to write you the letter
should provide only the basics - what the professor absolutely needs to know.
the position you’re applying for
when the letter would be due
optional: if you’re afraid they won’t remember you, a quick line identifying yourself & your relation to them
i like to provide an “out,” in case they don’t want to or are unable to write the letter
SAMPLE Dear Professor X, I’m applying for a job as an English tutor at the University Student Resource Center, and was wondering if you’d be willing to write me a letter of recommendation for the position. [optional identification: I really enjoyed taking English 300 with you in Winter 2016, and I’m hoping to develop and pass on those skills to other students through this job.] The letter would be due by September 1st - I know you’re very busy, so I completely understand if you’re not able to write one.  All best, Your Name
THE SECOND EMAIL
they said yes!! amazing.
this one can provide a little more information – a link to the job posting, if there is one, or you can write a quick summary of the position, plus a sentence or two about why you’re excited/interested in the job.
also tell them where to send the letter!!
directly to the recruiter for the job
to you, to add to your application packet
upload to an online LoR service or to an application website
99% of the time folks are fine with receiving electronic copies, but if they need to mail a hard copy, let them know up front.
SAMPLE: Dear Professor X, Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Here’s the link to the job listing; the letter should be sent as a .pdf file to the email address at the bottom of the page, anytime before 9/1. Thanks again – I’m hoping that this job will provide me with some teaching experience and the opportunity to work on my own writing. Please let me know if you need any more information! Best,  Your Name
WHEN TO SEND A FOLLOW-UP
these stress me out real bad but here’s the deal: most professors have a very shaky relationship to deadlines (especially when they have half a dozen more important ones than your piddly LoR).
the upshot: do not be afraid to nudge them.
often they need the nudge and are appreciative of it.
when that nudge happens is up to you and how much room you’ve given them before the deadline, and it’ll look different depending on your relationship with that professor.
GRAD SCHOOL LETTERS
i offered to send my professors essays that i had written for their classes, especially if i had taken those classes more than a year before asking them to write the letter, just so they could refamiliarize themselves with my work. you can also offer to send them your writing sample, if you haven’t already asked them to look it over for you.
honestly i’d recommend asking for these in person bc it’ll give you a chance to talk to them about their grad school experience and your own hopes & aspirations, which will help them write a more personal, fleshed-out letter.
one important note: if this letter is intended for use in grad school applications, do not stress out if it’s a little late. most programs do not care, and pretty much all of them accept late letters without a problem. your professor’s ability to meet deadlines does not reflect on you, and professors are intimately familiar with running late on LoRs. they really honestly don’t care. as long as it gets there before too long, you’ll be fine.
thank-yous are up to you! keep in mind that many departments have policies about gift-giving. i did give thank-yous to my three major letter writers, but they were handwritten cards & homemade cookies, nothing store-bought or expensive.

Might worth the try, since I always lost focus after 1 hour of studying.
8 things to do in 3 minutes to refocus your step studying (or any other kind of studying for that matter)
Walk out and get the mail so you can stand in the sunshine for a bit. (Walk really slowly for maximum sunshine time–bonus points for no shoes in the grass.)
Watch one youtube video (don’t get caught in the youtube vortex). Ideally this should be a video of cute puppies or something silly to make you smile.
Make a cup of tea
Send an email to a friend or family member about how you love them.
Three minute tumblr dash scroll (again, don’t get caught in the vortex).
Three minutes is just long enough to do about two sun salutations!
Say a quick hello to your significant other/roommate/puppy/kitten/ empty apartment/mom/who or whatever else lives with you!
One song dance party–play your favorite song really loud and dance all around your apartment to it.

New goal!
How to GET SHIT DONE
Because it comes up a lot for all of us trying to manage schedules that slam more than 24 hours of work into a day, I thought I would make one giant productivity post for everyone to help us all out (including myself).
10 steps to GET MORE SHIT DONE in a day
JUST START–I think most of us find that sometimes the hardest part to starting a task is overcoming the “ugh–fuck this shit, I don’t want to do this” feeling. So, trick yourself into it. Instead of saying you’re going to work for 8 hours, tell yourself you’ll do an hour… and watch that hour turn into 2 or 3 or 4 magically.
Action fights anxiety–If you’re terrified of a project hanging over your head, just start it!! Instead of waiting till tomorrow or next week when things might be right, just start right now! Do something to help yourself feel better about it. You’ll feel better getting through the rest of your day if you don’t have the fear. If you wake up at 2 am panicked you haven’t replied to an email, get up and do it now so you can go back to sleep in peace!
Make a list–Never underestimate the power of writing it down and crossing it off.
Take care of yourself–It’s hard to work when you’re tired or hungry or haven’t worked out, etc. So, prioritize–make yourself #1! You’re fucking worth it. So work out, eat breakfast, sleep 6 or 8 or 9 hours (whatever you need). Do whatever it takes to make yourself feel ready to take on the day.
Stay organized–I have a slightly OCD-type personality. If the desk is a mess, it’s hard for me to do my work. So put things back where they belong, take the time to keep things tidy so you can do your best work.
Don’t multitask–We all think we’re good at this–but the truth is we’re shit. We’re complete and utter shit at multitasking. Do one thing very well instead of four things poorly.
Shut off–Turning away from the work for just a minute can really decrease your productivity. Unless you are actively waiting on a text to hear the test results from your mother’s biopsy or an emergency call from your best friend that your house is burning down almost anything else can wait another hour until you finish your task. Even an email from your boss can probably wait another 10 minutes for you to finish what you’re working on.
Be competitive–Be a better you than you were yesterday. Do more. Show yesterday-you that they’re a lazy bitch and you can do better!
Refocus–here’s a list of how to do it in 3 minutes or less.
Give a fuck!!–If you actually care about what you’re doing, you’ll be more motivated to do it!
10 very specific ways to get more shit done
Work when you work best–This rule that people work better in the morning is bullshit. Some people work best from 5 am to 7 am, but some of us do our best work from 1 pm to 3 pm or 10 pm to midnight. Work when you do your best work and get things done–whenever that is!!
Localize–Put it all in one place. Stop moving between eight study resources or you’ll fail to focus on one thing well–instead condense all your study materials into one place and then focus on that ONE thing.
Multi-task on the stuff that doesn’t matter–It takes no brain power to clean a counter, so when you have to clean your apartment you can also return the phone calls you’ve put off. When you have to stand in line for coffee you can also answer emails, while your lunch is heating in the microwave you can put away the dishes in the dish washer. Get more done in the spaces between.
Be contrary–Who says you have to buy groceries on the busiest shopping day? Go at a weird time when other people won’t be there and you can get in and out faster. Don’t waste your time waiting in line just because that’s when everyone else does something. Do things when you can do it fastest!! Hit the post office at 3 pm when everyone else is at work, go to the gym late in the evening after the post-work rush is over. Do it when you can get it done fast!
Buy the right shit–Go ahead and buy the best tool for the task. If you don’t set yourself up right, you’ll just spend more time fighting for things to work than actually working!!
In arm’s reach or screw it–When you sit down to work, get all the things you need ready to go so you don’t have to keep getting up for more paper or some water. If it’s not within arm’s reach, move it or screw it!
Bribe yourself–Never underestimate the power of a piece of chocolate, or a night out at the end of the week, or an online shopping spree for that shirt you’ve wanted.
Turn it up (or turn it down)–If you hate the quiet play music, but if the sound is too distracting shut it the fuck off. Work in a space that works for you.
Deep end–welcome to it--Do the hard stuff first. You’ll lose energy as the day goes on, so leave the easy things for when you’re tired and don’t need as much will power.
One touch–You’ve probably heard this one before, but here’s my irreverent version of it. Pick it up–don’t put it the fuck down until you’re done. If you get an email from your professor saying you all have to complete a required form, do the fucking form now and email it back immediately. Why spend more time later having to look at that damn email again? If you realize you’re out of paper towels, check your level of tin foil and tissues while you’re at it so you can go to the store one time. Do it once, do it right, don’t fuck around.
Oh, and don’t forget to give yourself a break when you need it. Not every day can be a day where everything gets done. :)

Day 114
Anxiety hits me early in the morning because I woke up to a text that says "Would you like to have lunch together?" from a very good friend of mine. I did plan to head out to get some stationery but I just couldn't join him for lunch due to the stomachache that causes by the anxiety. When I was driving, he did call and ask where am I. I told him where I'm going. He said okay let's meet there, I couldn't say no. After I done parking my car, I start to feel sick, at that moment it really makes me wanting to get back on the car and go home but I stayed. I know I need to fight over it. I took the lift and walked to the store. That 1 min distance of walk feels like eternity to me. I starting to feel better after I reached. Maybe it's because of the scenes the shop is putting on or maybe because my attention got distract by the stationery corner. I took my time to pick out my favorites and then my friend came. When I say hi to him, my stomach spins a little. But after some chatting I'm back to normal again. He accompanied me to get my shopping list done in the store for the next 20 mins. After that, he suggests that we should go for lunch, I wasn't too concern about it until I'm seated in a Japanese restaurant. I thought I could sit down and have lunch like what I used to do but it turns out another way around. It's okay I'm not going to fuss about it because I know anxiety takes time to heal. After everything is done and when I'm going home, the anxiety stomachaches is complete gone. When I was diagnosed with anxiety. I do feel like my body is trolling me and I will get really angry for myself due to my body condition. Now, I learn to love myself more and more. I know I'm not completely heal yet but at least it's progressing.
