“please leave me alone!” you plead, practically running to get away from that man. “c’mon beautiful, just one date!” he croons continuing his pursuit. panicking at the thought of him catching you, you blindly go up to the first masculine person you see and attach yourself to their side. “there you are dear! see i told you i was taken!” turning around to look at the creepy man, you pause seeing his shock. now that you think of it, the whole street has gone quiet. ‘oh fuck what did i do?’ you think, slowly turning your head to look at the man you are holding onto. you freeze, an icy sweat forming on your skin when you recognize him- ‘c-commissioner ayato!’ you’re about to move away, profuse apologies on the tip of your tongue, when ayato wraps his arm around your shoulders. “i told you i would be here darling, you know how much i wanted some boba. now,” he glances back at the creep who was still frozen behind you, “who is this? he isn’t a new friend is he?” you gulp, sure ayato can feel your anxious shaking. “i don’t-i don’t know who he is, he’s been-been following me asking for a-for a date! he won’t take no f-for an anwser!” you blurt out, too bewildered by ayato’s immediate acceptance of the situation to say anything else. ayato clicks his tongue in disappointment, “tsk, not taking no for an answer? how-“ he pauses looking the creep up and down in disgust, “distasteful. only uncouth swine do that.” the ‘uncouth swine’ as ayato put it unfroze stammering out… something in defence of himself, when he’s interrupted by ayato. “truthfully, i don’t particularly care for what you have to say. leave my partner and i be, thank you.” he says curtly, turning back to you, “now dear, do you want your usual flavor?” you turn your gaze back to ayato and then the boba stand. “oh-oh yes please,” you spit out, afraid of wasting commissioner ayato’s good will. a fleeting thought of what the ‘usual flavor’ could possibly be passes through you mind before you are handed (fav/flavor) boba by ayato. his own boba in hand, he guides you to komori teahouse, hand on the small of your back. once inside, he sighs dramatically, “well, that is going to be difficult to ‘undo’.” you feel a harsh pang of guilt for making his life even harder than it must be already. you look down at the floor in shame, “i’m so sorry. i didn’t realize who you were; i just went to the first person i saw. i’m sorry.” you can feel your eyes sting, both from guilt and fear, finally processing the situation you found yourself in. ayato sips his boba thoughfully for a few moments. “hmm, i guess we’ll have to keep seeing each other then,” he hums. your head shoots up to look at him, a twinkle of mischief in his eye. “why-why would you say that?! you don’t even know who i am!” you blurt out, feeling almost frustrated by how little he seemed to care about this situation. he grins, “oh but i do know you, (y/n).”

“this is painful to watch,” paimon blurted out, watching you and neuvillette awkwardly try to flirt with each other. “it is,” the traveler agrees, shaking their head in disappointment. furina rolls her eyes and huffs, putting her chin on her hand, looking at the two of you in annoyance. “i’ve been trying to get them together for a month now! they still haven’t realized their love is reciprocated!” furina groans, lamenting all her hard work gone to waste.
“maybe we should just tell them up front?” the traveler suggests, only to receive a laugh from furina and a smack from paimon. the traveler glares at them, “well, do you two have a better idea?” furina’s laughter dies down and paimon stuffs her face with more cake. a long silence fills the air as the trio resume looking over to you and neuvillette.
paimon breaks the silence, “…maybe we should just tell them…” the traveler rolls their eyes, leaning back in their chair in contempt. furina clicks her tongue. “tsk, that’s so unromantic though!” she proclaims as though it should be obvious. “well do you have any better ideas?” the traveler arches a brow at furina. she’s silent for a few minutes, seemingly deep in thought. furina sighs, “no i don’t,” she admits, “but i want to be the one to do it!”
paimon jolts and gives furina a look. “no paimon wants to do it!” she whines, stomping her foot. immediately the two argue over who gets to break the news to you and neuvillette. shaking their head the traveler silently gets up and walks over to you two. as they get closer they can hear the two of you stumbling over your words. rolling their eyes, they come to a stop in front of you and neuvillette and clear their throat. at the noise the two of you immediately cease your babbling, faces warm. you look to the traveler, who looks very unimpressed. “…you two do realize you like each other right?”
silence.
a pin drops. your eyes shoot towards neuvillette’s. his face is red and you can feel your own heat up considerably. you shift on your feet. “…so…you like me?” you say, trying (and failing) to come off as unaffected. neuvillette clears his throat, “i do. …you ‘like’ me as well?” you shrug, looking away. “i’ve been trying to tell you i love you for months,” you mutter, rocking on your feet anxiously. neuvillette startles, face burning. “i hadn't-i hadn’t realized, my apologies. i have been trying to court you for a while now, too,” he confesses, grip tightening on his cane. your eyes dart back to his. “i didn’t know either…” you trail off, feeling foolish and dense.
neuvillette clears his throat again. “perhaps we should discuss this over dinner?” he suggests. you crack a smile, “of course; my treat.” neuvillette tries to protest but you just grab his hand and drag him along. walking back to the table where furina and paimon sit dumbfounded, the traveler smirks feeling vindicated. they sit down, ignoring paimon’s whining. they grab another slice of cake and look over to furina. she sits in deep in thought, before snapping her fingers. “alright! now that that’s done, i’m going to spread the news…” she trails off, getting out of her seat and walking towards the steambird hq. the traveler only shakes their head and continues eating, silently wishing you and neuvillette luck.

“i’ve never been good at noticing people flirting with me.” you muse, staring off in the distance. jing yuan’s smile strains for a moment, but you don't seem to notice. he hums in acknowledgement, “i've noticed.” you blink, trance breaking at his words, and look over to him across the table. you raise an eyebrow,”what do you mean, ‘you've noticed’?” you rest your chin in your hand. jing yuan huffs through his nose softly, “i've been trying to flirt with you for years,” he playfully complains, his usual loose, calm smile gracing his lips. you jolt, eyes widening “what?! since when?!” you can’t believe what you’re hearing. “for the past three centuries, (y/n). i've even asked you out on dates, like today,” jing yuan sighs, closing his eyes in mock disappointment. your face warms, “i thought- i thought you meant as friends! you never said it was in a romantic way!” you deny the possibility of you being that oblivious. jing yuan chuckles, “friends don't ask each other on weekly coffee dates at their home, where they sit at a table for two on the back patio for hours.” your face warms even more in embarrassment and you look at your hands. you truly hadn't realized that he meant it romantically; how could someone so beautiful, talented and important like someone like you? you were too boring and plain for someone like him to fall for. jing yuan frowns and reaches across the table to grasp your hand. brushing his thumb across the back of your hand, he softly says, “(y/n), whatever you're thinking-don't. i know you better than anyone and you're not ‘boring’ or ‘plain’, you're you and i love you.” your eyes flicker to meet his before looking away again. “i-“ you start before pausing to take a breath, “i love you too.” you sigh out almost relieved to finally spill those words out to him. jing yuan squeezes your hand, lifting it to his lips and whispering, “i love you more.”
