New Studyblr
I’m starting this blog to document my studying and learning. I work a full-time job that’s not very fulfilling. I’ve always loved science and quarantine is the perfect time to learn something new. I wanted to start with quantum mechanics, because I’ve always wanted to know why electrons can spin around the nucleus without being attracted into it. As I started watching lectures, I realize that I needed to go back to classical mechanics. and to do that, I need calculus. I haven’t studied these since high school (~8 years ago) so I’m starting from scratch, basically. I’m hoping that this blog will help me keep on track and motivated to not give up. These are what I am studying:
Chemistry: MIT OCW 5.111SC Principles of Chemical Science to start with general chemistry topics. It starts with a few lectures on very basic quantum mechanics, so I’m off to a good start already.
Physics: University Physics (Young & Freedman). I’m just working through this book one chapter at a time. First I’ll read each chapter and practice doing basic exercises, then move onto more involved and interesting practice problems.
Calculus: MIT OCW 18.01 Fall 2006 Single-Variable Calculus to start with the Calculus that I’ll need for physics.
Biology: MIT OCW 7.016 Introductory Biology. I was a biochemistry major briefly in college and I’m still interested in it. This is my lowest priority, but I still want to watch these lectures as I go along to understand and reinforce how the chemistry is applicable to so much of life.
I know that it will be slow going as my regular job can have busy periods and it’s quite a few subjects to work on at once, but I tend to get bored with one thing fairly quickly, so I like to have a few options to rotate around. There’s also the benefit of seeing how each branch fits in with the rest of what I’ll be learning, making it easier to get through difficult periods I think.
