a ghost can be anything really. the loosest definition that i can provide right now is that a ghost is an absence with a history. something was here once and now it is gone but it still lingers faintly in the space it left by nature of its very absence. by denying a ghost you only make it stronger and give it more precedence. that's just how they work by nature of what they are

Thinking about the devastating parallel between Buffy finding Joyce’s dead body and Dawn finding Tara’s dead body and how similar their reactions were, how small they seemed in the face of this loss, how unwilling to leave the body all alone.

Even beyond the fact that Willow and Tara lived with Dawn and raised and parented her for months, the way this unfolded really drove home that Tara was a mother-figure to Dawn and it made it all the more painful.
